Swollen or Discharging Eyes in Reptiles: What Differs Between Snakes, Lizards and Turtles
There is no single reptile eye and no useful colour chart for reptile eye discharge, because reptiles produce firm caseous material rather than runny pus. Snakes see through a fused transparent spectacle shed with the skin, most lizards have working eyelids that trap shed and debris, and aquatic turtles get swollen eyes from vitamin A deficiency and water quality. This guide separates the groups and gives the right response for each.

Quick answer
The first question with a reptile eye problem is which kind of eye you are looking at. A snake, a leopard gecko and a turtle have three different structures.
There is no single reptile eye guide, and there is no useful colour chart for reptile eye discharge. Reptiles concentrate infection into firm, cheesy material rather than producing the runny discharge that mammals do, so judging clear against yellow against green tells you almost nothing.
What does tell you something is which species you keep, because the eye itself is built differently in each group. Snakes have no eyelids at all and see through a transparent scale. Most lizards have working eyelids. Turtles get swollen eyes from vitamin A deficiency and from water quality far more often than from anything else.
- Snakes: the eye is covered by a clear scale called the spectacle, shed with each slough. A cloudy blue eye before a shed is normal. A bulging or wrinkled spectacle is not.
- Leopard geckos and other eyelidded lizards: retained shed inside the eyelid and vitamin A deficiency are the two dominant causes of a closed, crusted eye.
- Bearded dragons bulge their eyes deliberately to loosen shedding skin. That is normal behaviour, not swelling.
- Aquatic turtles: swollen shut eyes point at hypovitaminosis A or at water quality, and both need testing rather than guessing.
- Sunken eyes in any reptile mean dehydration until proven otherwise.

Never use human eye drops, contact lens solution, leftover antibiotic ointment or any home flush on a reptile eye without veterinary direction.
Several products used routinely in people are toxic to reptiles or damage a cornea that is already ulcerated. In snakes, drops applied over the spectacle do not reach the tissue you are trying to treat at all, and attempting to peel or lift a retained eye cap can tear the spectacle off and blind the animal.

Why a colour guide does not work for reptiles
Reptile pus is solid.
The main inflammatory cell in reptiles produces a firm, dry, cheesy material rather than the liquid pus mammals form. That is why a reptile abscess is excised rather than lanced and drained, and why the runny yellow-to-green spectrum that a dog owner might grade is largely absent.
What looks like discharge is often shed skin.
Across the reptile groups, a very large share of eye complaints turn out to be retained shed: a cap over a snake's eye, a rim of skin inside a gecko's eyelid, debris trapped in a conjunctival sac. Its colour is the colour of the animal's skin and tells you nothing about infection.
The same appearance has different meanings in different species.
A blue-grey eye in a snake in the days before shedding is completely normal. A blue-grey eye in a leopard gecko is not. Any advice that treats them as one finding is wrong for one of them.
Local signs are often systemic disease.
Respiratory infection, septicaemia, kidney disease and severe dehydration all show at the eye. This is why the useful home questions are about temperature, humidity, UVB, diet and water quality rather than about the shade of the discharge.
Snakes: an eye you cannot touch

A healthy reptile eye: clear, evenly shaped, fully open, with no swelling of the surrounding tissue and no crust at the margins.
Snakes have no eyelids. The eyelids fused during development into a single transparent scale, the spectacle or brille, which covers and protects the eye and is shed with the rest of the skin.
Normal shedding appearance.
In the days before a slough the eye turns cloudy and blue as fluid gathers behind the spectacle, then clears again shortly before the skin comes off. The snake often hides, refuses food and is more defensive. All of that is normal.
Retained eye caps.
If the spectacle does not come away with the shed, a layer of old skin stays over the eye. It may look wrinkled, dull or slightly raised. Repeated retention stacks layers and can damage the eye. This is a vet job, and the underlying cause is nearly always enclosure humidity or a rough surface the snake needs for shedding.
Bulging spectacle.
The space under the spectacle drains into the mouth through a small duct. If that duct blocks, or if infection ascends it from the mouth, fluid collects and the spectacle domes outward. This needs veterinary assessment, and it is often connected to oral disease.
Trauma.
Because the spectacle is a scale, it can be scratched or torn by rough decor, by a live prey animal, or by handling accidents. Damage to it exposes the eye underneath.

Lizards: eyelids change everything
Most lizards have functional, movable eyelids, and that gives them a conjunctival sac where material can lodge.
Leopard geckos and other eyelidded geckos.
These are the species most often presented with eye disease. Two causes dominate. Retained shed forms a ring inside the lid that abrades the cornea. Vitamin A deficiency changes the cells lining the lids and glands so that they produce sheets of keratin, which build into thick plugs of debris and make the eyes stick shut. The two often occur together, because a deficient gecko sheds badly.
Signs to act on: an eye held shut, a gecko rubbing its face on decor, visible white or grey material at the lid margin, reduced appetite because a gecko that cannot see does not hunt.
Geckos without eyelids.
Crested geckos, day geckos and many other species have a spectacle like a snake's and clean it by licking. They can retain shed over the eye in the same way a snake does, and the same rule applies: no picking, no peeling.
Chameleons.
The turret-shaped eye is highly mobile and chameleons clean the cornea by bulging and rubbing the eye. Sunken eyes are one of the earliest reliable signs of dehydration in this group, and dehydration in chameleons is common because many will not drink from a standing bowl. Persistent closing of one eye, or repeated rubbing, warrants a vet.
Bearded dragons.
Deliberate eye bulging during a shed cycle is normal and helps loosen the skin around the head. Judge it against the rest of the animal: dull skin and an approaching shed make it normal, while swelling with crust, discharge or lethargy does not.
Turtles and tortoises: the group where diet and water dominate
Swollen, closed eyes in an aquatic turtle are one of the most recognisable presentations in reptile keeping, and there are two main drivers.
Hypovitaminosis A.
Vitamin A deficiency, typically from a long-term diet of a single commercial pellet or of items low in vitamin A, changes the epithelium of the eyelids and the glands behind them. The lids thicken and swell, debris accumulates, and the turtle stops eating because it cannot see. Deficiency also affects the respiratory lining, which is why these animals frequently arrive with respiratory signs at the same time.
Correcting this is a veterinary matter. Vitamin A is fat soluble and stored in the body, and injectable or oral supplementation given without direction can push an animal into vitamin A toxicity, which causes skin sloughing and serious illness. Diet correction is the durable fix; the initial treatment is a vet's decision.
Water quality.
Ammonia and nitrite from an under-filtered or overstocked tank irritate the conjunctiva directly. Turtles are messy and many enclosures carry a filter rated for a much smaller bioload. If the eyes are the only sign, water is the first thing to test.
Take readings before you change the water, so the vet sees the conditions the turtle has been living in rather than the ones you created an hour ago.
Other causes in this group.
Respiratory infection with ocular signs. Aural abscess presenting as a swelling behind the eye on the side of the head, which is a surgical problem. Trauma from tank mates. In tortoises, dry conditions and dusty substrate causing irritation, and dehydration causing sunken eyes.
UVB.
Chelonians need appropriate ultraviolet provision and the lamp output falls long before the bulb stops emitting visible light. Bulb age is worth checking whenever anything about a turtle's health is in question.
What to do at home before the appointment
1. Identify what you are looking at.
Photograph the eye in good light, straight on and from the side. Photograph the whole animal too, because posture and body condition change the interpretation.
2. Check the husbandry numbers, not the discharge.
Temperature at both ends with a probe. Humidity against the range for your species. UVB bulb type and age. Substrate. For aquatic turtles, water temperature and test results for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate.
3. Reduce further damage.
Remove sharp or rough decor. Separate the animal from cage mates if there is any chance of a bite or a scratch. For a snake or gecko in shed, correct humidity and provide a humid hide and a rough shedding surface rather than intervening on the eye.
4. Support hydration.
For chelonians and many lizards, a shallow warm soak is appropriate for most species and helps a dehydrated animal. Check that soaking suits your species first, and never leave an animal unattended in water.
5. Keep offering food, but do not force it.
A reptile that cannot see may need food placed directly in front of it or offered by hand. Note down what it will and will not take, because that history is useful.
6. Leave the eye alone otherwise.
No drops, no ointments, no flushing, no wiping the surface of a snake's spectacle, no attempt to lift retained skin.
The routine that catches eye problems early

Written records of weight, shed dates, bulb changes and water tests are what turn an eye complaint into a diagnosable problem.
What never to do
Do not peel, lift or pick a retained eye cap off a snake or a spectacled gecko. The spectacle can come away with it.
Do not put human eye drops, contact lens fluid, saline of unknown composition, or old prescription ointment into a reptile eye.
Do not flush a snake's eye. There is a scale in the way and nothing you apply reaches the surface of the cornea.
Do not dose vitamin A yourself.
Do not treat the eye and ignore the enclosure. In most of these cases the eye is the visible end of a husbandry problem.
Do not wait to see if it opens on its own. An eye held closed for more than a day is a vet visit in every reptile group.
Do not assume both eyes must be affected for it to be serious. A single closed eye in a gecko is a very common presentation of a genuine problem.

When to get help
See a reptile-experienced veterinarian this week for any eye that is held closed, crusted, swollen or asymmetric, and for a retained eye cap after a shed.
Go the same day for a sunken eye in a lethargic animal, an eye that has changed rapidly, blood in or around the eye, an eye that protrudes abnormally, or any eye sign combined with open-mouth breathing, bubbling from the nose or refusal to eat.
Go the same day for a swelling behind the eye on the side of a turtle's head, which suggests an aural abscess and needs surgical treatment rather than medication alone.
Bring the species and approximate age, photographs of the eye and of the whole animal, probe temperature readings from both ends, humidity, UVB bulb type and installation date, the full diet including supplements and how they are given, the shed history, and for aquatic species the water test results and the filter details. Reptile eye disease is usually the visible end of a husbandry or nutrition problem, so the vet will want that information before examining the animal.
