Reading a reptile food label: what the pack does and does not guarantee
Reptile foods are not covered by the complete-and-balanced standards written for dogs and cats, so the front of the pack proves nothing. This guide explains how to read the guaranteed analysis, correct for moisture, find the calcium to phosphorus ratio, and spot a product sold for two species with opposite diets.

Quick answer
A reptile food label tells you far less than a dog or cat food label does, and the reason is regulatory. The nutrient profiles that let a pet food claim to be complete and balanced were written for dogs and cats. No equivalent published profile exists for reptiles.
That means "complete", "balanced" and "scientifically formulated" on a reptile product are marketing language rather than a claim anyone has verified against a standard. What you can actually check is the guaranteed analysis, the ingredient list, and whether the product admits which species it is for.
For most pet reptiles, the commercial product is part of the diet. Very few of them are the whole diet.

Why reptile labels are weaker than you expect
Pet food labelling rules were built around the two species that dominate the market. The published nutrient profiles that a manufacturer must meet to call a food complete and balanced cover dogs and cats.
Reptiles were never included, largely because the group is so diverse. A grazing tortoise, an insect-eating gecko, a fish-eating water snake and an omnivorous skink have less nutritional common ground than a cow and a cat do. There is no single profile to write.
The practical consequence is that nobody has checked the claim on the front of the bag against an agreed standard. The back of the bag, where the guaranteed analysis and the ingredient list sit, is where the checkable information lives.
That is not an argument against commercial diets. Some are genuinely well formulated, and some species are far better off with one than without. It is an argument for reading the back rather than the front.
The guaranteed analysis, line by line
Moisture.
Read this first, because it changes the meaning of everything below it. A canned or gel product is mostly water, so its protein figure looks low next to a dry pellet even when the actual food is richer.
To compare fairly, convert to a dry-matter basis: take the nutrient percentage, divide it by the result of one hundred minus the moisture percentage, and multiply by one hundred. Do that for both products and then compare.
Crude protein.
Almost always stated as a minimum, meaning the product contains at least that much and may contain more. "Crude" refers to the analytical method; it says nothing about whether the protein is digestible or whether the amino acids suit your species.
For herbivorous tortoises, excess protein is the concern rather than deficiency, and it has been associated with kidney disease and gout.
Crude fat.
A minimum. Relevant mostly for animals prone to obesity and hepatic lipidosis, which includes several commonly kept lizards.
Crude fibre.
Usually stated as a maximum, which is unhelpful for herbivores where you want a high figure. A grazing tortoise depends on fibre for normal gut function, and a low-fibre pellet fed as a staple works against that regardless of what else is in it.
Ash.
Total mineral content. Not harmful in itself and not very informative, but a very high figure on a product that also lists little calcium is worth a question.
Calcium and phosphorus.
The two figures that matter most, and the two most often missing. The commonly cited dietary target for reptiles is roughly two parts calcium to one part phosphorus. If the label gives neither, you cannot assess the product on the point that causes the most disease.

Weigh what you actually serve. Feeding guidelines printed on a pack are written for an average animal that does not exist.
The ingredient list
Ingredients are listed in descending order by weight as they went into the mixer, before any water was removed.
That produces two predictable distortions.
Wet ingredients ride high.
A fresh vegetable listed first was mostly water at the point of weighing. After drying, far less of it remains in the finished pellet than its position suggests.
Splitting pushes things down.
If a single cheap base ingredient is listed as three separate fractions, each fraction weighs less than the whole would have, so all three sit lower down the list while collectively dominating the food.
Read the first several ingredients together rather than fixating on the first one, and look for whether the base of the food matches the species. A herbivore diet built on grasses and hay reads very differently from one built on cereal.
For insect-based products, check whether the named insect appears as a real ingredient or only in the product name.
The vitamin and mineral panel
Vitamin D3.
Listed as cholecalciferol. If it is absent, the product contributes nothing toward the animal's D3 status and the UVB setup has to do all the work. If it is present, it counts toward the animal's total intake, and it has to be added to whatever else you are dusting with. Oral D3 from several sources at once is the route to excess.
Vitamin A.
Preformed vitamin A appears as retinyl acetate, retinyl palmitate or retinol. Beta-carotene is a precursor the body converts as needed. They are not interchangeable: preformed vitamin A accumulates and can be over-supplied, and hypervitaminosis A is a recognised problem in reptiles. Which form suits your species is a question for a reptile vet rather than a rule you can apply from the pack.
Everything else.
Vitamins are added at manufacture in amounts intended to survive an expected shelf life. They degrade with heat, light, humidity and time. A bag that has been open on a warm shelf for months no longer matches its own label, particularly for vitamins A, D3, E and C.
Buy a quantity you will finish. Store it sealed, cool and dark. Write the opening date on the bag.

For most herbivores the pellet supports the fresh diet. It is rarely a replacement for it.
Feeding guidelines and what they are worth
The feeding table on the pack is a starting point produced for a hypothetical animal, and it cannot account for your species, your enclosure temperatures, the animal's age, its activity level, or what else it eats.
Temperature alone makes a large difference to a reptile's intake, because digestion and appetite both track body temperature. The same animal in a correctly heated enclosure and a cool one will need different amounts of the same food.
Use the pack as an opening estimate, weigh what you serve, and then adjust based on the animal's weight trend and body condition rather than on the table.
What never to do
Do not treat "complete" on a reptile label as a verified claim. Nobody has checked it against a published standard, because for reptiles there is not one.
Do not switch a tortoise or any long-established animal onto a new staple abruptly. Gut flora and gut motility adapt slowly in reptiles, and an overnight change can produce days of poor digestion.
Do not compare an as-fed protein figure on a wet food with one on a dry food. Correct both to dry matter first or the comparison is meaningless.
Do not assume that "with added calcium" on dried insects removes the need to dust live feeders or to gut load them. Those are separate interventions.
Do not buy the large economy bag for a single small animal. It will lose vitamin potency long before it is finished, and the saving is spent on a diet that quietly deteriorates.
Do not feed a product intended for another species because the animal likes it. Palatability and suitability are unrelated, and many reptiles will readily eat things that harm them over time.

When to get help
Book a reptile vet before making a commercial product the staple diet of a tortoise, an iguana, or any animal with a history of kidney, liver or bone disease.
Book sooner if an animal on a commercial staple is losing weight, developing abnormal shell or bone growth, passing abnormal droppings, or refusing food it previously ate.
Bring the actual packaging with you rather than the name of the product. The guaranteed analysis and the ingredient panel are the parts that answer the question.

The measure of a diet is a steady weight, good body condition and normal droppings over months, not what the front of the bag claims.
