Why temperature comes before diagnosis
A reptile has no internal furnace. It moves between warm and cool zones to set its own body temperature, which is why keepers talk about a thermal gradient rather than a single number.
Almost every body process depends on that temperature. Below the species range, digestion slows or stops, the immune system runs at reduced capacity, and food already eaten can sit and ferment in the gut.
The visible result is a quiet, still animal that does not eat. That looks like illness, and it can turn into illness, but the starting cause is often the equipment.
There is a real phenomenon that resembles fever. Many reptiles respond to infection by seeking a hotter basking spot and holding a higher body temperature than usual, which is called behavioural fever.
That has a practical consequence. If the enclosure has no genuinely hot end, a sick reptile cannot do the one thing that supports its own immune response.
So a good gradient is not just comfort. It is part of the treatment.
What normal energy looks like
Normal varies enormously by species, and that is the main reason owners misread it.
Most diurnal lizards emerge, bask, move around the enclosure, and settle again in a broadly repeatable daily pattern. Nocturnal geckos may look inert all day and be perfectly healthy.
