Reptile fractures: the ones that happen without an accident, and why never to splint at home
A large share of pet reptile fractures happen with no accident at all, because the bone was already demineralised. That changes everything about what to do next. This guide covers how to tell a fracture from a dislocation, paralysis or a dropped tail, why a home splint on reptile skin causes pressure necrosis and constriction, how to set up a safe holding container at the right temperature, why reptile bone healing is slow and temperature dependent, and what the vet needs from you.

Quick answer
The most useful first aid for a reptile fracture is a small, warm, boring container and a car journey. Almost everything else an owner is tempted to do makes the outcome worse.
A reptile that suddenly cannot use a limb, holds one at a wrong angle, or has a kink in its body or tail needs veterinary imaging, not a splint. Reptile skin is thin and inelastic and the blood supply to a distal limb is marginal, so tape, bandage and improvised splints cause pressure injury and constriction faster than they provide support.
Before anything else, ask whether there was an accident. In pet reptiles a very large share of fractures happen during ordinary movement, because the bone was already weak from metabolic bone disease. A fracture with no trauma is a metabolic diagnosis until proven otherwise, and it usually means more than one bone is affected.
- Contain the animal in a small, low, padded, escape-proof box with nothing to climb or fall from.
- Keep it warm within its species range, with a gradient, because a cold reptile clots poorly and heals barely at all.
- Do not splint, tape, wrap, glue or straighten anything.
- Do not offer a large calcium dose at home to fix a suspected metabolic fracture.
- Book a reptile-experienced vet the same day, and take the husbandry numbers with you.

Never apply tape, bandage, a lolly stick splint, glue or cable ties to a reptile limb or tail.
Reptile skin does not stretch, distal limb circulation is poor and becomes worse when the animal is cold or stressed, and reptiles do not tell you when something is too tight. Constriction produces a dead limb or tail tip within a day or two, and adhesive removal strips scales and skin. A vet will immobilise the limb correctly, or decide it should not be immobilised at all.

Why so many pet reptile fractures are not accidents
Bone is a calcium reservoir as well as a structure. Maintaining it requires calcium in the diet, vitamin D3 to absorb that calcium, and in most species that means functional UVB exposure so the animal can make its own D3.
When that chain breaks, the body still needs calcium in the blood for muscle and nerve function, so it takes it from the skeleton. Over months the bone loses mineral and gains fibrous tissue.
The result is bone that does not behave the way a broken bone is expected to. It bends, folds and compresses rather than snapping. Owners describe a leg that feels soft or rubbery, a jaw that flexes, a spine that has developed a curve, or a lizard that simply stops climbing.
The practical consequence is that the event you witnessed is often not the cause. A dragon that fractured a femur stepping off a rock did not have a rock accident. It had months of inadequate UVB or calcium, and the rock was the last straw.
This changes the appointment.
If you present it as a fall, the fracture gets treated and the animal comes home to the same enclosure and fractures again. If you take the husbandry information, the vet can look at the whole skeleton and treat the cause.
Who is at particular risk
Fast growing juveniles have a high calcium demand. Females producing eggs, including single females with no male, draw heavily on the skeleton. Animals under an expired UVB lamp are at risk even though the lamp still lights, because ultraviolet output falls long before visible light does. Species kept behind glass or plastic that filters UVB get none of it. And any reptile kept below its preferred temperature range digests and absorbs poorly regardless of what is in the bowl.
Telling a fracture from the things that look like one
Dislocation
The limb is held abnormally and is not used, but the shape change is at a joint rather than along the bone. You cannot reliably distinguish this at home, and you should not try by manipulating the limb.
Paralysis or nerve injury
The limb drags with no attempt to place it, and the toes may be curled under. There may be no pain response. Spinal disease, spinal fracture, and in some cases severe metabolic disease produce this.
Dropped tail in a lizard
Many geckos, skinks and some other lizards can shed the tail at a preformed break point. The tail comes away cleanly, wriggles independently, and bleeding is usually minimal. This is a normal defensive behaviour and needs a clean enclosure and a check for infection, not emergency surgery. It is not a fracture, and the distinction matters because a fractured tail is a very different problem.
Gout
Urate crystals in joints produce painful swelling, reluctance to move, and lameness that can look like an injury. The swelling tends to affect several joints and the animal is systemically unwell.
Abscess
A firm swelling near a joint or along a limb, often after a bite or a burn. Reptile pus is solid, so the swelling does not soften or point the way a mammal's abscess would.
Retained shed constricting a toe or tail tip
A ring of old skin acts as a tourniquet. The digit swells, darkens and dies. It looks like an injury and is one of the few things an owner can and should catch early.
Thermal burn on the underside
A lizard sitting on an unregulated heat mat may be reluctant to walk because the surface it stands on hurts, not because a bone is broken.

A small lined container and a way to keep it warm are the whole first aid kit for a reptile fracture. Nothing that wraps or sticks belongs in it.
What to do, in order
1. Stop the animal from moving much, without restraining it.
Move it to a small, low container with a soft non-particulate lining such as kitchen paper or a smooth towel with no loops that toes can catch in. Remove branches, rocks and anything it can climb and fall from. The goal is to remove opportunity, not to hold the animal still.
2. Get the temperature right.
Provide a warm end within the species range and a cooler end, so the animal can choose. This is not optional comfort. Clotting, immune function, pain processing and bone healing in a reptile all depend on it being able to reach its preferred body temperature.
A holding box with no heat, chosen because it seems calmer, leaves the animal cold, which slows everything you are trying to help.
3. Cover open wounds loosely and cleanly.
If bone is exposed or there is a wound, lay a clean, non-adherent, lightly moistened dressing over it without wrapping around the limb. Do not use cotton wool, do not use antiseptic creams, and do not use anything containing essential oils.
4. Darken the container.
A lid or a towel over the box reduces struggling. A reptile that cannot see movement outside stops trying to escape, and less movement is exactly what you want.
5. Do not attempt to straighten anything.
Manipulating a fractured limb causes pain and can convert a closed fracture into an open one, or damage the vessels and nerves alongside the bone.
6. Do not give a calcium supplement to fix it.
A large oral calcium dose does not repair a demineralised skeleton and can complicate the vet's assessment and treatment. Metabolic bone disease is corrected with a treatment plan and with a corrected enclosure, over months.
7. Transport the whole animal supported.
Carry a snake supported along its entire length so no section hangs. Move a lizard in the box rather than in your hands. Keep the container warm in the car.

A reptile confined for weeks still has to eat, and hand offering at the warm end is often the only way to know whether it is. Refusing food during recovery is a signal, not a phase.
Why reptile fractures take so long, and what that means for the cage
Bone healing is a cellular process, and in an ectotherm the rate of cellular work is set by body temperature. A reptile at the correct temperature heals slowly by mammalian standards. A reptile kept cool heals slower still, or not at all.
Expect a management period measured in months, not weeks. That has consequences you should plan for.
The enclosure has to change for the whole period.
Climbing furniture comes out or comes down. Basking areas need to be reachable without a jump. A ramp is better than a step. Anything the animal can fall from is a repeat fracture waiting to happen, and the second fracture is usually worse.
Substrate has to change too.
Loose particulate substrate gets into wounds and into fixation sites. Kitchen paper or smooth flooring is unglamorous and correct.
Feeding may need help.
An animal that cannot reach the basking spot will not digest properly. An animal that cannot chase live prey needs food presented differently. Weigh weekly, because weight loss during a long recovery is common and is the thing that turns a fixable fracture into a lost animal.
The husbandry cause has to be fixed in parallel.
If the fracture was metabolic, surgery alone changes nothing. The UVB source, its age, its distance from the animal, whether it is behind glass or mesh, the calcium and D3 supplementation, the temperature gradient and the diet all have to be corrected at the same time.

A recovery enclosure should let the animal reach heat and food without climbing or jumping. Low ramps replace steps, and everything it could fall from comes out.
What the vet will want to know
Bring the husbandry data. For a fracture with no obvious accident it usually identifies the cause faster than examining the animal does.
What never to do
Do not splint at home. This is the single most damaging piece of popular advice for reptile injuries, and it costs animals their limbs.
Do not use adhesive tape, including micropore and fabric strapping, anywhere on reptile skin. Removal takes scales with it.
Do not apply superglue or resin to skin or to a shell over a fracture. It traps contamination against bone and prevents drainage.
Do not keep an injured reptile cold to slow it down. A cold reptile is not resting, it is failing to clot, failing to fight infection and failing to heal.
Do not dose calcium powder heavily in the hope of correcting bone weakness quickly. The imbalance took months to create and involves vitamin D3 and phosphorus as well as calcium.
Do not pick a lizard up by the tail, ever, and do not hold a lizard so that its body weight hangs from a limb. Both are direct causes of the injuries in this article.
Do not put an injured animal back with a cage mate. Competition for the warm spot and for food goes badly for the animal that cannot move properly, and cage mate bites are a common fracture mechanism in the first place.
Do not accept a fracture as bad luck if there was no accident. The next one is already being set up.

When to get help
Go immediately for exposed bone or an open wound over a fracture, for a snake with a kink that cannot right itself, for a limb that is cold, dark or swollen below anything you have applied, and for any reptile that is collapsed or unresponsive.
Contact a reptile-experienced vet the same day for a limb held abnormally, a limb not being used, a fracture with no accident behind it, or several limbs affected at once.
Book a routine appointment for reduced climbing, a fine tremor, a widened stance, or a jaw that looks soft or shortened, because these are the signs that come before the fracture and are the ones worth acting on.
