The first month with a rehomed reptile: the husbandry audit and the milestones that prove it is working
A second-hand reptile arrives carrying whatever the last setup did to it over months. This guide sets out the audit in the order that matters, starting with measured temperature, then light, hydration, the animal itself and parasites last, and gives week-by-week milestones so that settling can be measured rather than guessed at.

The first three days with a rehomed reptile are about doing almost nothing. Weeks one to four are different work: finding out, in a fixed order, what the previous conditions did to the animal, correcting the causes, and doing it slowly enough that you can tell which change produced which result.
Reptiles run on a slow clock, so none of this is visible day to day. You do not judge the first month by whether the animal seems happier. You judge it by milestones: whether it uses the warm end, whether it passes faeces, whether it takes a voluntary meal, whether it sheds cleanly, and whether the weight has stopped falling.
- Get the temperature right first. Digestion, immune response and drug metabolism are all temperature dependent, so nothing else works until it is.
- Measure everything yourself. Stick-on dial thermometers and colour-strip hygrometers are not evidence.
- Quarantine away from any other reptile for months, not weeks, with separate equipment and a fixed servicing order.
- Change one variable at a time. Change four and you learn nothing.
- Use white paper substrate for the first month so that mites, blood, mucus and unpassed food are visible.

Check what the heat source is plugged into before you plug it in.
Rehomed setups routinely arrive with a heat mat or heat rock running with no thermostat, or with a dimmer that the previous keeper believed was one. A reptile lying on an unregulated contact heat source will often stay there until it is burned through the ventral scales, because ventral heat sensing is poor and the animal is following a thermal gradient it cannot correctly interpret. These burns are deep, become infected, and take months to heal.
Every heat source needs a controller with a probe placed where the animal actually contacts the heat, and every basking surface needs checking with an infrared thermometer rather than assumed from a dial.

Why the first month works differently for a reptile
An ectotherm does not have a fixed internal temperature to fall back on. Enzyme activity, gut motility, wound healing, antibody production and the clearance of medication all sit on a temperature curve, and an animal held below its preferred range operates at a fraction of normal capacity on every one of them.
That has a practical consequence for a rehomed animal. A reptile that has been kept slightly too cool for a year is not just cold; it has been mildly immunosuppressed for a year. Whatever it is carrying has had a year of advantage.
The second consequence is pace. Reptiles lose condition slowly and regain it slowly. There is no version of this month where you see rapid improvement, and anyone who tells you their rescue reptile transformed in a fortnight is describing a change in hiding behaviour, not in health.
Stress in a reptile does not look like stress in a mammal.
It looks like refusing to eat, refusing to bask, pressing into a corner, rubbing the snout raw against glass, or staying in the cool hide even when cold. The remedy is not reassurance or handling. It is cover at both ends of the gradient, a correct thermal choice, reduced traffic past the glass, and time.
What to get from the previous keeper, and what to do without it
Ask for all of this at handover, and note which answers you do not get, because the gaps are themselves information.
If the animal comes with no history at all, treat it as wild-caught, unquarantined and unwell until your own measurements and a veterinary faecal check say otherwise. That is the conservative assumption and it costs nothing.
The audit, in the order that matters
The order is not arbitrary. Each step depends on the one above it.
1. Temperature.

A wall-mounted gauge tells you about the room. What matters is the surface the animal lies on, measured with an infrared thermometer.
Measure the basking surface with an infrared thermometer, and the air at animal level at both ends with digital probes. Confirm the controller is a thermostat with a probe, not a dimmer set by eye, and confirm the probe sits where the animal contacts the heat. Confirm there is a genuine gradient, and that the animal can reach both ends without crossing open ground.
2. Light and photoperiod.
Identify the ultraviolet lamp by type and age. Output falls long before the lamp stops emitting visible light, so a lamp that looks fine can be doing nothing. Note the distance from the basking site and whether mesh sits between them, since mesh removes a substantial part of the output. Provide shade, because a reptile needs to be able to get out of ultraviolet light as much as into it.
3. Humidity and hydration.
Distinguish ambient humidity from the microclimate inside a humid hide, because most species need the second more than the first. Check for the physical signs of dehydration: sunken eyes, skin that stays tented, sticky or stringy mouth secretions, wrinkled skin in snakes, and thick or discoloured urates.
4. The enclosure and its hazards.
Loose particulate substrate under a dehydrated animal, heat rocks, unguarded bulbs, mesh that traps toes, sharp decor, and gaps a small animal can escape through.
5. The animal, head to tail.
Eyes for clarity and symmetry, nostrils for discharge, the mouth for reddening, mucus or plaques, the jaw and limbs for the rubbery softness and asymmetry of metabolic bone disease, the spine and tail base for kinks, the vent for swelling or prolapse, the toes and tail tip for retained shed constricting them, ventral scales for burns and scale rot, and skin folds for mites.
6. Weight and body condition.
Weigh weekly on a gram scale at the same point in the feeding cycle, and write it down. Interpret it alongside body condition rather than alone.
7. Faeces.
Collect a fresh sample for the vet as soon as one appears. This is the single most useful thing you can bring to the first appointment.
8. Parasite treatment, last.
Deliberately last, because a reptile held below its preferred temperature metabolises medication unpredictably and mounts a poor response. Fix the environment, then treat.
The milestones for weeks one to four
Species vary enormously, so read these as questions rather than deadlines. A large boid may eat monthly, a chameleon daily, and a tortoise entering a natural cooling period may legitimately eat nothing at all.

Quarantine, done properly

A quarantine setup is deliberately plain: paper substrate, one hide at each end, and equipment that is never shared.
Separate room if you can, separate airspace at minimum. Service your established animals first and the new one last, every time, without exception. Keep dedicated tongs, bowls, spray bottles and thermometers for the quarantine enclosure, and wash hands and forearms between animals.
Quarantine for a reptile is measured in months rather than weeks, because the infections that matter most, including the viral diseases of boas and pythons, can be carried silently for a long time.
Keep the quarantine enclosure plain. Paper substrate, one hide at each end, a water bowl, a correct gradient, and nothing porous. It is unattractive and it is exactly right, because everything you need to see is visible on white paper.
What owners get wrong
Changing everything in the first week.
New substrate, new lamp, new diet and new enclosure at once means that when the animal improves or declines you have no idea which change did it.
Handling to build trust.
Handling is a cost to a reptile in the first month, not a benefit. Trust is built by a stable environment and a predictable routine, and target training comes later.
Feeding immediately.
A stressed, cool animal that eats often regurgitates, and regurgitation in a snake sets recovery back significantly. Get the heat right and let the animal ask.
Believing the previous keeper's numbers.
Not because they lie. Because dial thermometers and colour strips are inaccurate, probes get moved, and "he has always been a bit wobbly" describes chronic disease as often as it describes character.
Reading hiding as settling.
An animal that never emerges may be cold, may be in pain, or may have no hide at the warm end and be choosing safety over temperature.
Treating for parasites before fixing the environment.
Introducing it to the collection early.
Every keeper who has lost a collection to mites or a viral disease broke quarantine because the new animal looked fine.
What the vet will ask for at the first appointment

The measurable version of settled: using both ends of the gradient, with cover and water reachable from each.
How long should the animal have before I start handling it?
It has not eaten at all. When does that become an emergency?
The previous owner said it was healthy. Do I really need a vet visit and a faecal test?
Can I use the old enclosure and its decor?
When to get help
Contact a reptile-experienced veterinarian the same day for gaping, open-mouth breathing, mucus or bubbles at the mouth or nostrils, a prolapse at the vent, an animal that cannot right itself, or any burn on the ventral scales.
Book within the week for retained eye caps, a mouth that looks red or has plaques in it, mites, a jaw or limbs that feel soft or bend abnormally, or an animal that will not bask despite confirmed correct temperatures.
Book a routine appointment with a fresh faecal sample within the first month for every rehomed reptile, however well it looks. That appointment sets your baseline, and the baseline is what makes every future appointment useful.
Take your written records with you. In reptile medicine the husbandry sheet frequently identifies the cause faster than examining the animal does.
