Why heat is the resource that matters
Reptiles are ectothermic. They cannot generate body heat internally, so reaching their preferred temperature depends entirely on moving to the right place in the enclosure.
That makes the basking site the single most valuable resource in the habitat, and there is usually only one of them. Adding a second lamp helps less than it seems, because a dominant animal will often defend both.
Everything else follows from thermal access. Digestion, immune response, shed quality, and activity all require the animal to reach its species-appropriate body temperature daily.
So a reptile that is displaced from basking is not simply uncomfortable. It is unable to process food, unable to mount a normal immune response, and progressively less able to compete.
Food and hides matter too, but they are secondary. An animal that has lost thermal access is already declining before food competition becomes relevant.
What competition actually looks like
