Rehoming a fish that outgrew the tank, and why never to release it
Fish do not grow to the size of the tank; a small tank produces a stunted, deformed, shorter-lived animal. Fish do not grow to the size of the tank. That single piece of folklore is behind most of the fish that need rehoming, and it is false in a way that matters: a fish in too small a space suffers restricted skeletal growth while its internal organs keep developing, which shortens its life.
If a fish has outgrown its tank, the honest options are a bigger tank, a good rehoming, or, for a fish nobody can house, a humane end supervised by someone competent. Releasing it into a river, a lake or a park pond is not on that list.
Adult size is set by the species, not the tank. Find out what your fish will become before deciding what to do about it.
- Never release an aquarium fish into any natural or public water. It is unlawful in most places, it introduces disease, and released fish have established damaging populations worldwide.
- Never flush a live fish, and never freeze one or leave it out of water as a way of ending its life.
- Identify the fish properly before you rehome it. Shop labels routinely disguise species that reach very large sizes.
- Stop feeding a day or two before transport so the bag does not fill with ammonia.
- Tell the new keeper everything, including aggression history and any disease treatment.

Aquarium species released into ponds, canals, rivers and lakes have established self-sustaining populations in many countries, where they compete with native species, disturb sediment, damage plants and introduce parasites and diseases that native fish have no resistance to.
In most jurisdictions it is a criminal offence. It is also usually fatal to the fish, which is unlikely to survive local temperatures, water chemistry or predation. This applies to plants and snails from the tank as well as to the fish.

Why fish do not grow to fit the tank
Growth in fish is controlled by genetics, by food, by temperature and by time. It is not controlled by the walls of the container.
What a small tank does is different, and worse. Poor water quality and confinement restrict skeletal and muscular growth, but the internal organs continue to develop on their own trajectory. The result is a fish with a body too small for its own organs, often with a visibly deformed spine or head, and with a substantially shortened life.
A fish that has been kept small is therefore not a compact healthy fish. It is a damaged one. Owners who see a plec that has stayed small for a couple of years frequently conclude the myth is true, and the fish's later decline is put down to bad luck.
Water quality is the other half of it. A fish producing waste proportional to its adult size, in a volume chosen for its juvenile size, lives in permanently elevated nitrogenous waste even with good filtration. That drives gill damage, chronic stress and susceptibility to disease.
The fish that grow far beyond the tank they are sold in
Adult size is the single question nobody asks in a shop, and the names in use actively hide it.
Common plecs are sold at a few centimetres and become very large heavy-bodied fish. Iridescent sharks, red-tail catfish and pacus grow to sizes appropriate to public aquaria. Oscars and many other large cichlids reach a size and a temperament that outgrows most community setups. Silver arowanas are surface fish that need enormous length. Tinfoil barbs and bala sharks are sold as small shoaling fish and become large active ones. Goldfish, particularly single-tailed varieties, are pond fish sold as ornaments for bowls.
Before buying any fish, look up the species name rather than the shop label, and look up the adult size and the minimum footprint recommended for it. Footprint matters more than volume for most species, because fish swim horizontally.
If you already have one, the same research tells you how urgent the rehoming is. A fish that is going to double in size in a year needs a plan now, not when it stops fitting.
Upgrade, rehome, or something else
Upgrading the tank.
The best outcome where it is realistic. Plan for the adult size and the adult temperament, not the current one, and remember that a much larger tank brings its own placement, weight and maintenance implications.
Rehoming to another keeper.
The usual answer. Aim at people who already keep the species or the type, because they will have the space and will know what they are taking on.
Start with the retailer who sold the fish. Many independent aquatic shops will take back a fish they sold, particularly if it is a species they can rehome onward. Local aquarium societies and fishkeeping clubs are the next best route, because they are full of people with large tanks and specific interests. Species-specific online groups work well provided there is some screening.
Public aquaria very occasionally take large fish, but they are usually oversubscribed and cannot become a disposal route. Ask politely, expect no.
Rehoming to a pond.
Appropriate only for species that genuinely belong in a pond in your climate, in a private pond, with the owner's consent, and with quarantine. Goldfish and koi in a suitable private pond are a legitimate outcome. Tropical species are not, and no ornamental fish should go into any water that connects to a natural watercourse.
Humane euthanasia.
A real option, not a failure, for a fish that cannot be housed adequately and that nobody can take, and for a fish that is suffering. It has to be done properly.
Accepted humane methods use an overdose of anaesthetic, and clove oil is the agent most commonly used by keepers, followed by a confirmatory step to ensure death. The technique and the sequence matter, and it is worth asking a veterinary practice that sees fish, or an experienced aquatic keeper, to talk you through it rather than following an unsourced description.
Flushing a live fish, freezing it, leaving it out of water, or putting it in boiling or iced water are not humane and should never be used.
Preparing a fish to be rehomed
Identify it properly. Give the recipient the actual species where you can, not the trade name. If you are unsure, a clear photograph from the side posted to a species identification group usually settles it.
Be honest about health. If the fish has been treated for anything, say what, when and with which product. If it currently has any sign of disease, treat it before rehoming or make the recipient fully aware, because a fish moved into an established tank takes its pathogens with it.
Record the water it is used to. Temperature, and hardness and pH if you know them. A fish acclimated to hard alkaline water moved abruptly into soft acidic water has a genuinely difficult time, and the receiving keeper can plan for it if told.
Note the diet. What it eats, what it refuses, and how often.
Note the behaviour. Whether it has fought with tankmates, what it killed if anything, whether it jumps, and whether it is territorial around a particular object. Aggression history is the piece most often omitted and the piece that most often causes a problem in the new home.
Stop feeding one to two days before transport. A fasted fish produces far less ammonia in the bag. This is the most useful single preparation step.

Catch calmly, into a container of the fish's own water rather than into air. A net is for guiding, and a large fish is better caught in a rigid container than lifted in mesh.
Moving the fish
Use the fish's own tank water in the bag or container, not fresh water, so the chemistry does not change during the journey.
Give more air than water. The exchange happens at the surface, and a bag that is mostly air keeps oxygen available. For journeys of more than an hour or two, a battery air pump into a rigid container is far better than a bag.
Double bag, or use a rigid container with a secure lid, and put it inside a polystyrene box or an insulated bag. Temperature stability matters more than temperature perfection.
Keep it dark. A covered container calms the fish and reduces oxygen demand.
Do not use a net to lift a large or spiny fish out of the water. Spines and gill covers catch in mesh, and a struggling large fish injures itself. Guide it into a rigid container underwater instead.
Handle catfish and other spined species carefully, both for the fish's sake and yours, because some have spines that lock and some can inflict a painful wound.
At the destination, acclimate to the new water gradually. Float the sealed bag to equalise temperature, then introduce new water slowly over a period, either by adding small amounts repeatedly or by using a drip line. The larger the difference in chemistry, the longer this should take.
Quarantine the new arrival in the receiving home rather than putting it straight into an established tank.

Do not net a large spined fish out of the water if you can guide it into a container instead.
Do not put a rehomed fish straight into an established display tank without quarantine.
Do not keep a fish in a tank you know is too small on the basis that it seems all right. Stunting is not visible until the damage is done.

The measure of a good outcome is the fish reaching its adult size in a tank that was chosen for that size.
Have ready the species if known, a clear side-on photograph, the current length, how long you have had it, the tank dimensions it is in now, the water temperature and chemistry it is used to, the diet, any treatments given and when, and its history with tankmates. That is the information a receiving keeper needs, and it is also what a vet needs if the fish turns out to have a health problem rather than a housing one.
