Rabbit near-drowning: the first hour, and the pneumonia that follows
A rabbit pulled from water is a veterinary case even if it hops away looking normal. The drowning itself rarely kills. - Rabbits breathe almost entirely through the nose, so water in the nasal passages is an airway emergency in a way it is not for a dog.
- A rabbit's undercoat waterlogs fast and holds the water against the skin, so heat loss continues long after the animal is out.
- Never swing, shake or hold a rabbit upside down to drain water. Rabbit skeletons are light relative to their muscle, and a panicking rabbit can fracture its own spine.
- Rabbits have a weak cough reflex and cannot vomit, so aspirated water and debris stay where they land.
- Any rabbit that goes off food or produces no droppings in the twenty-four hours after a soaking is in gut stasis until proven otherwise.

Never hold a rabbit upside down, swing it, or shake it to get water out.
This is old advice that has been carried across from human and canine first aid and it is actively dangerous here. A rabbit's spine is supported by powerful hind-limb musculature acting on a comparatively light skeleton, and the classic rabbit spinal fracture happens when the animal kicks against restraint. Inverting a frightened, wet, slippery rabbit invites exactly that kick.
Support the whole body, keep the spine in line, and let gravity do a small amount of work by tilting the head slightly below the chest. Nothing more.

Why a soaked rabbit is in more trouble than a soaked dog
Four pieces of rabbit anatomy make water far more dangerous for them, and none of them are obvious.
They are effectively obligate nasal breathers.
In a rabbit the soft palate and the epiglottis sit in a locked arrangement that keeps the nasal airway and the oral cavity functionally separate. It is a superb adaptation for an animal that needs to breathe while its mouth is full of grass and its eyes are on the sky. It is a very poor adaptation for having water in the nose. A rabbit with blocked nasal passages struggles to switch to mouth breathing at all, and open-mouth breathing in a rabbit is therefore a late and grave sign rather than a mild one.
Their coat is a sponge, not a raincoat.
Rabbit fur is a dense undercoat with relatively little of the oily, water-shedding guard hair that a dog or an otter relies on. It takes on water quickly, holds it against the skin, and then takes hours to dry. The outer fur can feel merely damp while the animal is still sitting in a cold wet layer next to its own skin. That is why towel drying has to go down to skin level and not just across the top.
They cannot clear what they inhale.
Rabbits cannot vomit, and their cough reflex is weak. Water, silt, algae and hutch bedding that reach the lower airway are not going to be brought back up. They stay there, and the lung deals with them by inflaming.
Their skeleton is built for acceleration, not for handling.
A rabbit's bones are light for the size of the muscle attached to them. Combined with a powerful startle kick, this makes lumbar fracture a real and common injury during any panicked handling, and never more likely than when someone is trying to grip a soaking, thrashing animal at the edge of a pond.
The myths, and what is actually true
Myth: rabbits can swim, so a pond is not a hazard.
Some wild rabbits in wetland habitats genuinely swim. Domestic rabbits are not those animals. They can paddle briefly, then the coat waterlogs, the head drops, and they cannot climb a vertical pond liner or a smooth pool wall. A pond with steep sides is a trap, not a hazard.
Myth: it shook itself off, so it is fine.
Shaking removes surface water from the guard hairs. It does nothing about the undercoat, and it does nothing at all about what has been inhaled. The two things that kill happen inside.
Myth: warm it up quickly with a hairdryer or a hot water bottle against the skin.
Fast external heat on a cold rabbit causes peripheral blood vessels to open before the core has recovered, dropping blood pressure and returning cold blood to the heart. Direct heat also burns skin that is chilled and numb, and a rabbit will not move away from a burn it cannot feel. Warm the room, warm the towels, and use your own body heat through a barrier.
Myth: give it a drink to help it recover.
Do not put anything into the mouth of a rabbit that is not fully alert. It has already inhaled once.
Myth: a bath is a safe way to clean or to warm a rabbit.
Bathing is one of the commonest routes to this emergency in the first place. Rabbits panic in water, thrash in a slippery sink, and the same shock and hypothermia cascade follows. A dirty bottom is cleaned dry or with a shallow, supported bottom-only rinse, and the real job is finding the dental, arthritic or dietary reason the rabbit cannot clean itself.
The first fifteen minutes

Towels, an open carrier lined with dry bedding, and a route to the vet. Set these out while someone else dries the rabbit.
Lift with the spine supported.
One hand under the chest, the other under the hindquarters, hindquarters supported at all times. Hold the rabbit against your body. If the rabbit is struggling hard, wrap it in a towel first and lift the bundle.
Clear the airway.
Wipe water, weed, silt and bedding from the mouth and the nostrils with your fingers or a corner of towel. Tilt the head a little below the level of the chest for a few seconds, with the body fully supported and level. Do not invert, swing or compress the chest.
Dry to the skin.
Blot and squeeze with towels rather than rubbing. Rubbing damages chilled skin and does less. Work through the coat in sections, change to a dry towel as soon as the first is wet, and keep going for longer than feels necessary. Long-coated breeds may need twenty minutes and several towels.
Warm gradually.
A warm room, warm dry towels, and the rabbit held against your chest. If you use a heat source, put it beside the rabbit through a thick barrier and leave an unheated area it can move to. Never a hairdryer on hot, never a hot water bottle in direct contact.
Get in the car.
Line a carrier with dry towels or fleece. Do not use hay or shavings on a wet rabbit. Take a spare dry towel. Ring ahead and say the words near-drowning, because it changes how quickly you are seen and what is prepared.
What to check in the first hour

Lift the lip and look at the gum. Healthy rabbit gums are pink. White, grey, or blue-tinged means go now.
Gum colour.
Lift the lip gently and look at the gum above the incisors. Pink is what you want. Pale or white means poor perfusion from shock or cold. Grey or blue means oxygen is not getting where it should, and that is an immediate emergency.
Breathing pattern.
Watch the flanks from the side. Look for effort, for the nostrils flaring, for the head and neck stretching forward and upward, and for any noise. Rabbits are quiet breathers, so audible breathing is abnormal.
Body temperature by feel.
Ears and feet are the honest places. Cold ears and cold feet in a rabbit that is also quiet and unresponsive point to a falling core temperature. Do not take a rectal temperature yourself in a shocked rabbit.
Posture.
A rabbit in trouble sits hunched, tight, with the eyes half closed and the ears held flat and still. A rabbit that is genuinely settling will start to groom, and grooming is a good sign.
Anything that suggests injury.
Rescue and panic produce fractures, dislocated hocks and torn claws. Check that both hind legs move symmetrically and that the rabbit is not dragging anything.
The delayed killers: twelve to seventy-two hours
This is the part that turns a survivable accident into a death, because everyone relaxes.
Aspiration pneumonia.
Inhaled water strips surfactant from the alveoli, so the smallest air sacs stop reinflating properly. Add the bacteria of pond or floodwater, or the chemical irritation of chlorinated pool water, and inflammation builds over hours. The rabbit that was bright at bedtime is breathing with its whole abdomen by morning.
Early signs are subtle: a slightly faster resting breathing rate, reluctance to lie stretched out, a nose that will not stop being damp, and a rabbit that sits with its elbows turned out. A cough may never appear at all.
Gut stasis.
Cold, pain and fear all suppress gut motility in a rabbit, and a rabbit gut that stops does not simply restart. Gas builds, the animal becomes more painful, it eats less, and the cycle tightens. Watch the litter tray obsessively. Fewer droppings, smaller droppings, or none in eight hours after a soaking is a reason to ring the vet, not to wait.
Hypothermia that has not finished.
A rabbit can look dry, be sitting up, and still have a core temperature that is drifting down because the undercoat is wet. Recheck the skin under the fur on the belly and behind the shoulders two hours later.
Ear infection.
Water that has sat in the ear canal, particularly in a lop with its folded canal anatomy, seeds an otitis externa that shows up as head shaking, scratching, or a tilt three to ten days later. Mention any water exposure if you present a rabbit with a head tilt in the following fortnight.
Moist dermatitis and flystrike.
Fur that stays damp against skin macerates it. In warm weather a damp, dirty rabbit is a flystrike candidate within a day. Check the back end and the skin folds twice daily for the rest of the week.
Breed, age and season change the answer
Lops.
The folded ear canal holds water. Lops have a much higher baseline rate of ear disease, and a soaking adds to it. Dry inside the ear flap, never poke anything into the canal, and watch for head shaking.
Rex coats.
Rex fur lacks the normal length of guard hair, so it soaks through almost immediately and offers little protection. Assume a Rex is wet to the skin from the moment it goes in.
Angora and other long coats.
These hold enormous amounts of water, take hours to dry, and mat as they dry. The mats then trap moisture against skin. Long-coated rabbits often need clipping after a soaking, and that decision belongs with the vet.
Dwarf breeds and young kits.
Small body mass means fast heat loss. A dwarf rabbit reaches a dangerous core temperature far sooner than a giant breed does in the same water.
Giant breeds.
The rescue itself is the risk. A soaked giant rabbit is heavy, slippery and strong, and this is where spinal injuries happen. Use a towel and a second pair of hands.
Seniors and arthritic rabbits.
They fall into water more often, they cannot climb out, they lose heat faster, and they are the group least likely to restart eating promptly afterwards.
Season and region.
Winter pond water is a double insult of drowning and cold. Summer soaking is a flystrike risk. In climates with a heavy wet season, ground-level hutches and runs flood, and rabbits drown in their own accommodation rather than in ponds. Rain-filled water butts and uncovered garden drums are a specific and frequently overlooked hazard.
The seventy-two hours after

Getting the gut moving again is the priority once the rabbit is warm and dry. Familiar greens and unlimited hay in front of the rabbit, all day.
What never to do
Do not swing, invert or shake the rabbit. It causes spinal injury and it does not clear the lungs.
Do not perform chest compressions on a breathing rabbit. Rabbit ribs break easily and a broken rib punctures lung.
Do not use a hairdryer on a hot setting, a heat lamp at close range, or a hot water bottle against the skin.
Do not put the rabbit back outside to dry off, whatever the weather looks like.
Do not syringe water or food into a rabbit that is not fully alert and swallowing normally.
Do not decide on the evening of the accident that no vet visit is needed. The delayed presentations are the reason this article exists.
Do not bathe a rabbit, ever, as a routine. If the rabbit needs cleaning that badly, the real problem is why it stopped cleaning itself.
Do not assume that because the water was clean, the lungs are safe. Chlorinated pool water is chemically irritant, and clean tap water still removes surfactant.
Preventing the next one
Fence, net or securely cover any garden pond that a rabbit can reach, and remember that a run panel laid over a pond is a platform, not a barrier.
Put a firm sloping exit ramp into any water feature, pool or trough on the property. It will not save a waterlogged rabbit, but it saves other animals and children.
Lid every water butt, drum, bucket and trough. A rabbit that climbs onto the rim of an open butt has no way back out.
Raise hutches and runs off the ground, and check that the ground under a run drains. Look at where the water goes in the heaviest rain your region gets, not the average rain.
Never leave a rabbit unattended near an uncovered swimming pool. Pool covers are not a floor, and a rabbit that walks onto one is under it within seconds.
Stop bathing rabbits. Use dry cleaning for a soiled bottom, treat the reason it is soiled, and ask the vet to look at teeth, weight, arthritis and diet.

The rabbit is eating but has produced no droppings since it happened. Is that reassuring?
When to get help
Go immediately, without phoning first if the practice is close, for any rabbit that was submerged, that lost consciousness, that gasped, that has pale, grey or blue gums, or that is breathing with visible effort.
Go the same day for any rabbit that was soaked to the skin, even a bright one, and for any rabbit that stops eating or stops producing droppings.
Go in the following days for a change in breathing, a head tilt, ear scratching, or damp or soiled fur that you cannot get dry.
Bring these to the appointment: what the water was, which tells the vet whether to expect chemical irritation or bacterial contamination, how long the rabbit was in it, whether it went under, whether it was ever unresponsive, what it has eaten since, how many droppings it has passed, and your resting-breathing video.
Expect the vet to check temperature and gum perfusion, listen to the chest, consider oxygen, give warmed fluids, provide pain relief, and think about prokinetics and syringe feeding for the gut. Chest radiographs are often taken and often repeated at twenty-four to forty-eight hours because early images can look normal. Antibiotics are a judgement call driven by the water source rather than a routine, and steroids are generally avoided.
Ask, before you leave, what specific breathing rate or droppings count should bring you straight back. A number you have written down beats a general instruction to monitor.
