Rabbit food allergies: why that diagnosis is almost always wrong, and what the signs really mean
Rabbits do not get diagnosed with food allergies, and running a dog-style elimination diet on one is dangerous because the fibre you would remove is what keeps the gut moving. This guide explains the caecal fermentation behind most food reactions, the dental and mite causes behind the rest, and how to test a food properly using dose and speed rather than exclusion.

Quick answer
A mixed muesli-style ration invites selective feeding: the rabbit picks out the starchy, sugary pieces and leaves the fibre. The reaction that follows gets called an allergy. It is a carbohydrate load.
True food allergy, meaning an immune response to a dietary protein, is not a diagnosis that gets made in pet rabbits. There is no validated elimination trial for the species, no hydrolysed rabbit diet, and no established clinical picture.
What owners call a food allergy is nearly always one of three other things: a load of rapidly fermentable carbohydrate upsetting the caecal microbes, a dental or mechanical problem that makes eating painful, or a skin condition with a non-dietary cause that happened to start in the same fortnight as a food change.
- The reaction is dose-dependent, not identity-dependent. The same food, given more slowly and in a smaller amount, is usually fine. A real allergy does not behave like that.
- A rabbit must never be fasted or put on a restricted diet to "test" a food. The fibre you would be removing is what keeps the gut moving.
- Sticky, soft material on the bottom is usually uneaten caecotrophs, not diarrhoea, and it points at too much concentrate and not enough hay.
- Itching with scurf along the back is almost always fur mites, and they transmit to people.
- Refusing a food the rabbit previously ate is a dental sign until proven otherwise.

Never fast a rabbit, and never run a restriction diet on one.
The elimination trial used in dogs and cats removes the ordinary diet for weeks. In a rabbit, the ordinary diet is the fibre that drives gut motility, and removing or sharply reducing it causes gut stasis. A rabbit that stops eating stops passing droppings, gas builds, pain suppresses appetite further, and the animal spirals. Hours matter. Whatever the suspected food problem is, hay goes up during the investigation, never down.

Why food allergy is the wrong frame
An allergy is an immune reaction to a specific protein. It is identity-dependent: a tiny amount of the offending protein produces the reaction, and a large amount of a related but different protein does not.
Almost every "rabbit food allergy" fails that test on the first question. The rabbit tolerates the same food in a smaller amount, or tolerates it if it is introduced over three weeks instead of overnight. That is a dose response, and dose responses come from fermentation, not from immunology.
The diagnostic machinery does not exist either. In dogs and cats, a cutaneous adverse food reaction is investigated with a strict elimination trial on a novel or hydrolysed protein for a set period, followed by a rechallenge. There is no equivalent for rabbits. There is no hydrolysed rabbit diet, no validated protocol, and critically no way to remove the ordinary diet from a rabbit without removing the fibre that keeps it alive.
So the useful question is never "which protein is he allergic to". It is "what changed, how fast, and how much".
What is actually happening: the caecum
A rabbit is a hindgut fermenter with a caecum that is large relative to its body. Food passes to the colon, where the gut sorts it: the coarse indigestible fibre is moved on and expelled as the familiar hard round pellets, and the fine, more digestible fraction is pushed backwards into the caecum.
In the caecum, a dense microbial population ferments that fraction and produces volatile fatty acids, protein and vitamins. The product is packaged as a caecotroph, which the rabbit takes directly from the anus, usually at night or early morning, and digests a second time.
That population is adapted to a specific substrate: high fibre, low starch, low sugar. It is stable when fed what it evolved on and unstable when fed something else.
When starch from grain, sugar from fruit or a treat, or simply a large load of concentrated pellets arrives in the caecum, it ferments quickly. The pH drops. The normal population is suppressed, and organisms that were present in small numbers, including clostridia, get room to multiply. Some of them produce toxins.
The clinical spectrum that follows runs from mild to fatal:
Soft caecotrophs. They stop being firm enough for the rabbit to take cleanly, so they end up squashed on the fur. Owners call this diarrhoea. The hard pellets are still being produced normally, which is the tell.
True diarrhoea. No hard pellets at all, only liquid. Serious in an adult and an emergency in a young rabbit.
Enterotoxaemia. Toxin production overwhelms the animal. This kills, and it kills fastest in weanlings and young rabbits whose caecal populations are still establishing.
The timing is what fools people. This appears within a day or two of a food change, which is exactly what an allergic reaction would look like from the outside.
Sticky bottom is not diarrhoea
This distinction decides your next move, so make it before anything else.
Hard round pellets present, plus soft sticky material. The gut is working. What has failed is either the quality of the caecotrophs, which are too soft to be taken cleanly, or the rabbit's ability to reach them. Diet is the usual cause: too many pellets, too many treats, too much fruit, not enough hay. Physical causes matter too, and they are frequently missed: obesity, arthritis, spinal pain, a dental problem that makes the act of taking caecotrophs uncomfortable.
No hard pellets, liquid only. This is real diarrhoea and it is a different problem with a different urgency. Go the same day, and go immediately if the rabbit is young.
No droppings at all. This is gut stasis and it is the most urgent of the three.
The skin signs blamed on food

Weigh the pellets. "A handful" is not a measurement, it varies by hand and by day, and a surprising number of reported food reactions disappear once the portion is actually measured and held constant.
Fur mites. The commonest cause of an itchy rabbit by a wide margin. The picture is flaky scurf along the back and behind the shoulders, sometimes described as walking dandruff because the mites move within it. It spreads between rabbits, and it causes an itchy rash on people who handle them, which is often the clue that finally makes the diagnosis.
Ear mites. Thick, crusted, tan-coloured material building up in the ear canal, and a rabbit in real discomfort. Never pick the crusts off: the skin underneath is raw and it is extremely painful. This needs a prescribed treatment.
Fleas, which arrive from a dog or cat in the household.
Moult. Rabbits moult heavily and sometimes untidily, in patches, with a visible line moving across the body. It looks alarming and it is normal. Crucially, moulting is seasonal, and so is buying a new bag of food in spring, which is how the two get linked.
Barbering. Fur chewed short by a companion, or by the rabbit itself. A doe in a false pregnancy pulls fur from her own dewlap and flanks to build a nest, and that is hormonal, not dietary.
Urine scald. Red, wet, sore skin on the inner thighs and around the vent. The cause is urinary or postural, not something the rabbit ate.
Moist dermatitis under the chin. Usually a deep water bowl the dewlap dips into, or drooling from a dental problem.
Ringworm. Less common but real, producing flaky, often circular areas of hair loss, and transmissible to people.
None of these respond to changing the pellet brand, and all of them have been blamed on it.
The dental explanation for almost everything else
Rabbit teeth grow continuously throughout life, and they are worn down by the grinding, side-to-side chewing that only long-fibre forage produces. A diet low in hay and high in concentrates does not deliver that wear, and the teeth elongate.
What follows gets attributed to food, repeatedly:
Refusing a food they used to eat. Sharp spurs on the cheek teeth cut the tongue and cheek. A rabbit will avoid the food that hurts most and take the one that hurts least, which usually means abandoning hay and hard pellets for soft greens. Owners read this as a developed dislike or a reaction to a formulation change.
Dropping food, or chewing on one side. Watch a meal for two minutes and you will often see it.
A wet chin, chest or front paws. Drooling. Almost always dental.
A runny eye. The upper cheek tooth roots sit close to the tear duct, and an elongated root compresses it. The eye overflows because the drainage is blocked, not because of dust in the hay.
Weight loss and a dirty bottom together. A painful mouth reduces intake and reduces caecotroph consumption at the same time.
If you are considering an elimination diet, examine the mouth first. A proper cheek tooth assessment usually needs sedation and a proper oral speculum, because a torch and a look at the front teeth reveals nothing about the back of the mouth.
How to actually test a food
This is the constructive replacement for an elimination trial, and it works.
Hay is the constant and it never goes down. Unlimited good grass hay, available at all times, is the baseline against which everything else is judged. If anything, increase it during an investigation.
Change one variable at a time. The commonest reason an owner cannot identify a trigger is that the pellet brand, the treat and the greens all changed in the same week. Change one thing, then wait.
Weigh the concentrate. A measured portion on a kitchen scale, the same every day, removes the single largest uncontrolled variable in most rabbit diets.
Transition slowly. Mix the new food into the old in increasing proportions over weeks rather than days. Most reported food reactions are transition-speed problems.

One new green at a time, in a small quantity, with several days between additions. Leafy tops are the useful part; the sweet root is the part that reaches the caecum as sugar.
Introduce greens singly. One new leaf type, a small amount, then several days of watching before the next. This is slow and it is the only way to attribute anything.
Keep a written log. Date of every change, amount, and the state of the droppings each day. Memory is not good enough and the pattern only appears on paper.
Then read the result correctly. If a small amount is tolerated and a larger amount is not, that is a dose response, and the answer is portion control rather than exclusion. If a food causes trouble at every amount while other foods of the same type do not, tell your vet, but expect the explanation to be fibre content, sugar content or something like a high oxalate load rather than an immune reaction.
What else looks dietary and is not
Coccidiosis. A protozoal infection that is common in young rabbits and in poor hygiene conditions. It produces soft stool, poor growth and weight loss, and it is routinely blamed on food because it appears around the time a young rabbit changes diet. It is diagnosed on a faecal examination and treated specifically.
Encephalitozoon cuniculi and other systemic disease. Anything that makes a rabbit feel unwell reduces intake and changes droppings.
Pain from anywhere. Rabbits respond to pain by eating less, which changes the droppings, which then gets attributed to the last food that changed.
Stress. A house move, a new pet, building work or the loss of a companion all reduce intake and slow the gut.
Mouldy or stale hay. A genuine dietary cause, and one worth checking, particularly in humid climates and after a bale has been open for a while. It smells musty and it is a respiratory and gut problem, not an allergy.
Region and season change the picture
Hay type varies enormously by country. Timothy, meadow, orchard and local grass hays differ in fibre and protein, and a rabbit moved between them may need a slower transition than expected. The important quality markers are the same everywhere: it should smell sweet, be green rather than brown or grey, be dry, and be free of dust and mould.
Humidity changes hay storage. In hot, humid regions an open bale spoils faster, and mould is the real variable behind many "sudden intolerance" stories.
Muesli-style mixes are still widely sold in some markets and have largely disappeared from others, where a uniform extruded pellet is the norm. If a mix is what is available locally, understand that the analysis on the pack describes what is in the bag, not what the rabbit eats.
Greens availability is seasonal and regional, and a rabbit whose salad changes completely between seasons is being asked to adapt several times a year. Introduce each seasonal change as slowly as a new food.
Parasite treatment availability differs. The products used for fur mites and ear mites are prescription items in many countries, and the over-the-counter alternatives are frequently ineffective.
The routine that prevents most of this

Hay is the constant. During any dietary investigation it is the one thing that increases, because it is the fibre keeping the gut moving while you change everything else.
What never to do
Never fast a rabbit. Not for a test, not to settle the gut, not before a procedure unless a vet has specifically instructed it.
Never reduce hay.
Never use a novel-protein or hydrolysed diet designed for a dog or cat.
Never change several dietary variables at once.
Never give dairy-based treats. Yoghurt drops are sold for rabbits in many places. A rabbit is not equipped for dairy, and these products are sugar delivered directly to the caecum.
Never treat mites with an over-the-counter product intended for another species. Several are dangerous in rabbits.
Never pick crusts out of an ear.
Never assume a food change caused a skin problem without checking for mites first.
What the vet will ask for and what they will do
- The written log: what changed, when, and how much
- Photographs of the droppings on white paper, ideally over several days
- The weight log
- The actual food packaging, or a photograph of the ingredients and analysis panel
- The hay type, where it is stored and how old the open bale is
- How much of each thing the rabbit eats daily, by weight where possible
- Whether other rabbits in the house are affected
- Whether anyone in the household has developed an itchy rash
Expect a full physical examination with particular attention to the mouth, and expect the vet to say that a proper cheek tooth assessment needs sedation. Skull radiographs may follow if tooth roots or a tear duct problem are suspected.
For skin signs, expect coat brushings, tape strips or a skin scrape looking for mites, and possibly a fungal culture. These are quick, cheap and answer the question that an elimination diet never would.
For gut signs, expect a faecal examination, which covers coccidia and parasites, and body condition scoring. Bloodwork and imaging follow if the rabbit is losing weight.
Bring a fresh dropping sample in a clean container.

When to get help
Go immediately for:
- A rabbit that has stopped eating, or that is hunched and quiet
- No droppings for several hours
- Watery output with no hard pellets, especially in a rabbit under twelve weeks
- A rabbit that feels cold, or will not move
Book a vet appointment within a few days for:
- A persistently messy bottom despite a hay-first diet
- Refusing food it previously ate, dropping food, or a wet chin
- A runny eye
- Itching, scurf, or hair loss of any kind
- Weight loss on your log
- Crusting in the ears
And if you are reading this because you were about to start an exclusion diet, the more useful thing to do this week is weigh the pellets, top up the hay, photograph the droppings daily, and book a proper look at the teeth.
