Rabbit calcium, bladder sludge and why supplements backfire

Rabbits absorb dietary calcium largely in proportion to intake and excrete the surplus through the kidneys, which is why their urine is normally chalky and why calcium blocks, mineral licks and alfalfa pellets in adults cause bladder sludge rather than stronger bone. This guide sets out the diet that actually protects teeth and skeleton, how to read the litter tray, and when straining or staining needs a vet.

Quick answer

Rabbits handle calcium differently from almost every other pet, and the difference matters. Most mammals absorb only as much calcium from food as they need and leave the rest in the gut. A rabbit absorbs a large share of whatever is in front of it, then dumps the surplus into its urine.

That is why healthy rabbit urine is often cloudy or chalky, and it is also why calcium supplements, mineral licks and alfalfa-based food in an adult rabbit are actively harmful. They do not build stronger bone. They thicken the urine, and thickened urine becomes bladder sludge and bladder stones.

Bone and dental health in a rabbit is built by unlimited grass hay, a measured amount of an appropriate pellet, enough space to move, and enough water. There is no supplement that improves on that, and several that make things worse.

Hay first, a small measured pellet portion second, greens third. That order is the whole calcium strategy for an adult rabbit.

  • Cloudy, creamy or chalky rabbit urine is usually normal. Toothpaste-thick urine is not.
  • Do not give calcium supplements, mineral licks, salt wheels or bone meal to an adult rabbit.
  • Alfalfa is correct for growing kits and for pregnant or nursing does, and wrong for healthy adults.
  • Water intake is the single most useful lever you have. Rabbits drink considerably more from an open bowl than from a bottle.
  • Red or orange urine is usually plant pigment, not blood. Blood from the vulva in an unspayed female is a different and more serious problem.

Why rabbit calcium handling is unusual

In most mammals, the intestine controls how much calcium enters the body. Vitamin D and parathyroid hormone regulate the transport proteins, absorption goes up when the animal is short and down when it is replete, and the kidney only fine-tunes the result.

Rabbits do less of that gatekeeping. A substantial proportion of dietary calcium is absorbed passively, roughly tracking how much is present in the gut, whether or not the animal needs it. The regulation happens at the other end, in the kidney, which excretes the excess.

That excreted calcium leaves as calcium carbonate crystals suspended in the urine, which is why normal rabbit urine looks cloudy and dries to a chalky residue on newspaper or on a litter tray. Owners who move to rabbits from other pets often report this as an infection. In a well rabbit it is not.

The problem is one of degree. When intake is high, or urine volume is low, or the bladder is not emptied fully and often, those crystals accumulate at the bottom of the bladder as a thick sediment. That is sludge. It is abrasive, it inflames the bladder lining, it makes urinating painful, and painful urination leads to further retention, which concentrates it further.

Sludge that persists provides a surface for stones to form on. Bladder stones in rabbits cause blood, straining, and in some cases obstruction.

So the practical rule follows directly from the physiology. You cannot fix rabbit calcium by supplementing, because the rabbit will absorb it and then have to get rid of it. You manage it by controlling what goes in and by increasing what dilutes it.

What the diet should actually be

Grass hay, unlimited, always available.

Timothy, meadow, orchard or a similar grass hay should make up the great majority of what the rabbit eats by volume. It provides the long abrasive fibre that wears the continuously growing cheek teeth against each other, and it keeps the gut moving. It is also comparatively moderate in calcium, which matters when it is most of the diet.

Hay quality is a real variable. It should smell sweet, be green rather than yellow or grey, be long-stemmed rather than dusty fragments, and be stored dry. A rabbit that refuses hay is often refusing bad hay, or is in dental pain.

A plain extruded pellet, all the same shape, based on grass hay rather than alfalfa for an adult. Weigh the daily portion rather than scooping it. Pellets are the concentrated part of the diet and the part most likely to be over-fed.

Muesli-style mixes with flakes, peas, seeds and coloured pieces should not be fed at all. Rabbits selectively eat the sweet high-starch pieces and leave the fibre pellet, so the diet the rabbit actually eats is nothing like the one on the label. This is one of the main drivers of dental disease and obesity in pet rabbits.

Fresh leafy greens daily.

A mixed selection rather than one item in quantity. Variety spreads the mineral and oxalate load and mirrors the natural diet better than a large bowl of a single green.

Owners are often told to eliminate every green with any calcium in it. That over-restriction is unnecessary and it reduces water intake, since fresh greens are a meaningful source of water. Variety, in sensible amounts, is the better instruction. If your rabbit has an established sludge or stone problem, get a specific list from your vet rather than guessing.

This single change matters more than most dietary adjustments. Rabbits drink substantially more from a heavy, wide, open bowl than from a sipper bottle, because drinking from a bottle is slow and awkward. More water means more dilute urine and less sediment.

Offer both if you are switching, keep the bowl heavy enough not to tip, and clean it daily.

Alfalfa, in its correct place.

Alfalfa is a legume, not a grass. It is high in calcium and protein, and it is appropriate for growing kits and for pregnant or nursing does, whose requirements are genuinely higher. It becomes a problem when nobody makes the switch at maturity and an adult stays on junior food for years.

If your adult rabbit is still eating alfalfa pellets, change gradually to a grass-hay-based pellet over a couple of weeks, mixing the two, because sudden diet changes cause their own gut problems.

Vitamin D, and why not to supplement it blind

Vitamin D increases calcium absorption. In an animal that already absorbs calcium passively and excretes the surplus through its kidneys, adding vitamin D without a reason increases the load on the system rather than strengthening anything.

Rabbits obtain vitamin D from sun-cured hay and from sunlight on skin. A house rabbit eating good hay is not usually the concern. A rabbit on poor, barn-stored hay, kept entirely indoors away from natural light, is a more reasonable subject for discussion, but that discussion belongs with a rabbit-experienced vet, because over-supplementation of vitamin D is genuinely dangerous.

Access to natural daylight through an open window, or safe supervised outdoor time in a secure run, is a better answer than a bottle of drops. Glass filters most of the relevant wavelengths, so a sunny windowsill indoors is not the same thing.

Where bone problems in rabbits actually come from

Dental disease.

This is the real bone-adjacent problem in pet rabbits, and it dominates everything else. Rabbit teeth grow throughout life and are worn by grinding fibrous material. Without enough long fibre, the cheek teeth develop sharp spurs that lacerate the tongue and cheek, the roots elongate into the jaw and into the tear ducts and eye sockets, and the whole structure remodels.

The signs are subtle at first: dropping food, preferring soft food, eating less hay, wet fur under the chin, a runny eye, a lump along the jaw, or weight loss. By the time a rabbit refuses food entirely the disease is advanced.

Long-stem hay is the treatment and the prevention. No supplement substitutes.

Rabbits housed in small hutches with little opportunity to run, dig and stand up develop poorer bone than rabbits with space. Bone responds to load. A rabbit that gets to sprint, binky and stretch out is building the skeleton that keeps it safe.

Spinal fracture.

Rabbit bone is light relative to the power of the hind limbs. A rabbit that panics while restrained, or that is dropped, can fracture its own lumbar spine with a single kick. This is a handling problem rather than a nutritional one, but it is far more likely in a rabbit with poor bone. Always support the hindquarters, never lift by the scruff alone, and never let a rabbit struggle in mid air.

Kits that cannot get purchase on slippery flooring, and kits with underlying developmental problems, may develop legs that splay outward. Non-slip surfaces from the start make a real difference.

The daily checks that catch problems early

Look in the litter tray every day. You are looking at three things: the amount and size of the droppings, the appearance of the urine, and whether there is any straining evident from the pattern of where the rabbit went.

Feel the rabbit weekly. Run a hand along the spine and over the hips. You should feel bone with a light covering, neither sharp nor buried.

Weigh weekly and write it down. A falling weight in a rabbit that still appears to eat is often dental disease.

Check the fur between the back legs. It should be dry and clean. Any staining, wetness or smell means either urine is not being passed cleanly or the rabbit cannot reach to groom, and both need attention.

Watch how the rabbit sits to urinate. A rabbit that has to strain, that half-lifts, or that leaves several small deposits instead of one is telling you something.

My rabbit's urine is bright orange. Is that blood?
Usually not. Rabbit urine takes on red, orange and brown shades from plant pigments in the diet, and the colour varies day to day. True blood is more often seen as streaks, clots or a wash of colour in a rabbit that is also straining or unwell. If the rabbit is bright, eating and passing normal droppings, watch it. If it is not, get it checked, and take a photograph of the urine on white paper.
The pet shop recommended a calcium block for my rabbit's teeth. Is that wrong?
Yes. Teeth are worn down by grinding long fibrous material, not built up by minerals. A calcium block adds calcium the rabbit will absorb and then have to excrete, and does nothing for dental wear. Hay does the job the block claims to do.
If calcium causes sludge, should I stop feeding greens like kale entirely?
Not usually. The base of the diet, the hay and the pellet, carries far more of the total calcium load than a handful of greens, and greens contribute useful water. Feed a rotating variety rather than a lot of any one item. If your rabbit already has diagnosed sludge or stones, ask your vet for a tailored list.
My rabbit has a wet, stained bottom. Is that a diet problem?
It may be, but it needs examining rather than diagnosing at home. Urine scald from sludge, an inability to posture properly because of arthritis or obesity, dental pain preventing grooming, and soft caecotrophs sticking to the fur all produce a similar look and need different treatment. The skin damage underneath progresses quickly and can attract flystrike in warm weather, so this is a same-day problem.

When to get help

Same day for straining, blood, a wet or scalded bottom, a rabbit that has stopped eating, or a rabbit that is hunched and quiet.

Urgently for blood from the vulva of an unspayed female, which points to uterine disease rather than the bladder, and for any rabbit that appears unable to pass urine at all.

Book a routine appointment for a rabbit that has started leaving hay, dropping food, losing weight on the weekly record, or that has developed a persistently damp chin or a runny eye. Those are dental signs and they are far easier to manage early.

Bring the exact diet including brand and daily pellet weight, what water container is used, the weekly weight record, a photograph of the urine on white paper, whether the rabbit is neutered and when, and a note of whether it has ever been on alfalfa or a muesli mix. In rabbit urinary disease the diet history usually explains the picture before any test is run.
