Heated homes in cold climates are dry, but dryness is rarely what harms a parrot. Bathing does more than any humidifier, over-humidifying a cold house grows mould, and the real winter killers are coated heating appliances, unflued heaters and carbon monoxide. Winter air indoors is dry for a simple reason. Cold outside air holds very little water, and when it comes into the house and is heated, the relative humidity falls further. A heated home in a cold climate can be drier than most of the places companion parrots evolved in.
The practical response is not to turn the living room into a rainforest. It is to bathe the bird regularly, ventilate sensibly, keep the cage away from radiators, vents and window draughts, and be careful about the appliances and products that come out when the weather turns cold. Most winter emergencies in pet birds are caused by heating and by air quality, not by dryness itself.

- Do not chase a tropical humidity figure in a cold house. Condensation and mould are their own hazard, and Aspergillus is a real avian disease.

Overheated non-stick coatings kill birds within minutes, and winter is when they appear.
Space heaters, portable radiators, oil-filled heaters, hair dryers, irons, air fryers, slow cookers, drying racks placed over heat sources and self-cleaning oven cycles can all carry coatings that release fumes when overheated. Those fumes are odourless to people and rapidly fatal to birds, and the bird does not need to be in the same room.
Solid fuel and paraffin heaters add smoke, particulates and carbon monoxide to the same list. Fit a carbon monoxide alarm, do not run unflued heaters in a room with a bird, and check any new heating appliance for coated surfaces before it is switched on.

Why heated air goes dry
Air holds water in proportion to how warm it is. Cold winter air outside is already carrying very little, and when the same air is drawn indoors and warmed to living temperature, its capacity rises while the amount of water in it does not. Relative humidity drops.
That is why homes get dry in the cold months even without any change in habits, and why the effect is strongest in cold, dry climates with continuous heating.
For a parrot, that means a change in environment over weeks: drier air, less ventilation because the windows are shut, more dust circulating, and more time indoors for everyone.
None of that is an emergency on its own. What it does is take a bird that was coping and remove the margin, so that the actual problems, poor air quality, poor diet, disrupted sleep, become visible.
Bathing is the intervention that works
A room humidifier changes the air. A bath changes the bird.
Regular wetting supports preening, helps loosen and remove feather sheaths and dust, and is normal behaviour for species that experience rain. Most parrots that dislike bathing have simply never been given a form of it they accept.
Offer more than one option.
A shallow dish of tepid water on the cage floor, a fine spray from a plain unscented spray bottle, a shower perch, a running tap, or a spray of water over wet leaves all suit different individuals. Try several and let the bird choose.
Use plain tepid water and nothing else.
No soap, no shampoo, no conditioner, no aloe product unless a vet has specifically recommended one, and never anything scented.
Let the bird dry naturally in a warm draught-free room.
Do not use a hair dryer. Many carry coated parts, they blow far hotter than a bird can tolerate, and the noise frightens most birds.
Bathe in the morning.
That gives the bird the day to dry and preen, rather than sitting damp through a cool night.
Do not force it.
Holding a frightened bird under water is counterproductive and dangerous. Frequency matters less than the bird accepting it willingly, and a bird that enjoys a spray will ask for it.
Humidity, and why more is not better
If you want to measure, use a hygrometer, and treat it as information about the house rather than a target to hit.
The instinct to push humidity up because a species originates in a humid climate is understandable and it goes wrong in a cold house. Warm moist air meeting cold window glass and cold external walls condenses, and persistent condensation grows mould.
Mould matters for birds specifically. Aspergillus is an environmental fungus that causes serious respiratory disease in parrots, and damp, poorly ventilated, dusty conditions are exactly where exposure rises.
Ventilate anyway. Opening a window briefly, with the bird safely caged and out of the direct draught, exchanges stale dusty air without meaningfully cooling the room. In winter, the temptation is to seal the house up, and that is what concentrates cooking fumes, aerosols, smoke and feather dust.
Where the cage should sit in winter
Away from radiators and heating vents.
Direct hot airflow dries a bird's immediate environment far more than the room average suggests, and radiant heat from a nearby radiator creates a temperature the thermostat never sees.
Away from windows and outside doors.
Window glass is cold at night, and the draught that comes off it is a genuine temperature swing. A window that gets direct winter sun creates the opposite problem in the afternoon.
Away from the kitchen.
This holds all year, and it matters more in winter when the kitchen door stays shut and the extractor is used less.
Somewhere with a stable temperature.
Healthy, fully feathered, acclimated parrots tolerate ordinary household temperatures well. What they tolerate poorly is a room that swings, and a bird that is unwell, very young, elderly or in heavy moult has less reserve than a healthy adult.
The signs that are not about humidity
This is where owners lose time, and occasionally lose birds.
Feather destructive behaviour.
Plucking, chewing and barbering are commonly blamed on dry air. Skin disease, pain, liver disease, nutritional deficiency, parasites, hormonal drivers and airway irritation are all far more likely explanations, and they need excluding before any environmental theory is acted on. A bird that starts plucking in November needs a veterinary work-up, not a humidifier.
Persistent sneezing and nasal discharge.
Chronic sinus disease in parrots is common and is often linked to long-term vitamin A deficiency on a seed-based diet. It does not clear up by itself and it does not respond to steam.
Flaky skin and dull plumage.
Diet is usually a bigger factor than air. Poor plumage in a seed-fed bird is a nutritional finding until proven otherwise.
Fluffed, quiet, sitting low on the perch.
That is a sick bird, and in winter people mistake it for feeling the cold. Birds conceal illness until late, so treat it as a same-day veterinary sign rather than a heating problem.
What never to do
Never use essential oils, diffusers, scented candles, incense, air fresheners or aerosol sprays in a home with a bird. This is not a moderation issue.
Never run an unflued paraffin or gas heater in a room with a bird, and never use a barbecue or camping stove indoors during a power cut.
Never use a hair dryer to dry a bird.
Never put a heat lamp, heat pad or covered heat source in a cage without veterinary advice. Birds burn, and an ill bird may not move away from heat.
Never leave a humidifier running with old water in the reservoir.
Never assume a plucking bird has an environmental problem. Get it examined.
Never cover a cage completely with an impermeable material to keep the heat in. Ventilation matters more than insulation, and a bird in a sealed covered cage rebreathes its own air.

When to get help
Go to an avian veterinarian immediately for any change in breathing, including tail bobbing, open-beak breathing, clicking, wheezing or visible effort, and for sudden weakness, wobbling or collapse after any possible fume exposure. Get the bird into fresh air on the way.
Book an appointment promptly for persistent sneezing, wet or crusted nostrils, staining of the feathers above the beak, a change in voice, feather plucking or chewing, or a bird that has lost weight over the winter.
Take the details with you: what heating you use, whether anything new has been running in the house, whether anyone smokes or vapes indoors, what the bird actually eats, its weight record, and when the change started. In winter cases the history usually identifies the cause faster than the examination does.
