Parrots in a Hot Climate: Cage Placement, Shade and Cooling That Works
Birds have no sweat glands and run hotter than mammals, so the gap between the bird and hot air closes early and evaporation becomes the only route left. This guide covers why cooling the room beats cooling the bird, how humidity changes everything, sun tracking and cage placement, bathing and misting, the limits of fans and air conditioning, outdoor aviaries, and a plan for when the power fails.

A hot weather plan is mostly furniture and timing: where the cage sits, where the sun falls at three in the afternoon, and what happens if the power goes off.
Birds have no sweat glands. A parrot loses heat by breathing it out, by holding its wings away from its body, and by radiating from its bare legs and feet. Every one of those routes works less well as the air gets closer to the bird's own body temperature, which is higher than yours.
That is why cooling the room beats cooling the bird, and why a caged bird is in a fundamentally different position from a free one: it cannot move when the sun does.
- Direct sun through glass is the single biggest indoor hazard. A cage in shade at breakfast can be in full sun by mid afternoon.
- Humidity decides whether evaporative cooling works at all. The same temperature is far more dangerous in humid air than in dry air.
- Bathing and misting do more for a hot parrot than a fan does, because wet feathers give the bird an evaporative surface it does not otherwise have.
- Species matter. Birds from arid Australia handle dry heat better than birds from humid forest, and neither handles being trapped in a hot room.
- Sustained open beak breathing in a bird is not the equivalent of a dog panting comfortably. It means the bird is already working to cool itself.

Never leave a parrot in a conservatory, a sunroom, a glazed balcony, a parked vehicle or a cage in direct sun, even briefly.
Glass admits solar radiation and traps the heat behind it, so the air inside rises far above the outdoor temperature. A caged bird cannot leave, cannot find shade, and cannot get to water once the water is hot. Birds die in these spaces in a timescale measured in minutes to a small number of hours, and the bird is often found in the bottom of the cage having tried to get away from the heat.

Why heat is different for a bird
No sweat glands.
A parrot cannot lose heat through its skin the way a person does. Its main cooling route is respiratory: moving air across moist surfaces in the airway, sometimes with a rapid flutter of the throat.
That works only if the air can accept more water vapour. In humid conditions it cannot, which is why a humid hot day is far more dangerous than a dry one at the same temperature.
A small gradient to start with.
Birds run hotter than mammals. As the air temperature climbs, the difference between the bird and its surroundings narrows earlier, and once the air is close to body temperature the bird can only lose heat by evaporation.
Feathers work both ways.
The plumage that keeps a bird warm also slows heat loss. A bird holds its wings away from its body and raises its feathers slightly to open that insulation up. A bird with damaged plumage from feather destructive behaviour has less insulation in both directions and can heat up faster.
Bare skin is the radiator.
Legs, feet and the area around the eyes and beak are where heat is dumped. A bird standing tall on a perch with its feet exposed is cooling. A bird sitting fluffed on its feet is conserving heat, which in a hot room is a sign something else is wrong.
Caged means committed.
The single most important difference from a wild bird is choice. A wild parrot moves into shade, moves down to cooler ground, and bathes. A caged bird gets whatever the cage position gives it, all day.
What changes by species and by bird
Origin matters, but not as much as people assume, because captivity removes the behaviour that made the origin survivable.
Arid country species.
Cockatiels, budgerigars, galahs and other Australian species evolved with high dry heat and cope with it better than forest species, provided they have shade, water and airflow. They are less tolerant of high humidity.
Humid forest species.
African greys, eclectus, amazons and many South American species are adapted to warm humid conditions, but that adaptation depends on shade and abundant water. They dehydrate quickly in dry heat.
Large versus small.
Large birds have a smaller surface area relative to their volume, so they shed heat more slowly. Macaws and large cockatoos heat up steadily and cool down slowly.
The individual matters more than the species.
Overweight birds, older birds, birds with respiratory disease such as aspergillosis, birds with heart disease, and birds recovering from illness all tolerate heat poorly. So does any bird that has just been through a stressful event, because stress itself generates heat.
Acclimatisation is real and it takes time.
A bird that has lived in air conditioning all summer is less prepared for a sudden hot day than one that has lived with moderate warmth. That is an argument for stable, moderate conditions rather than for extremes in either direction.
The room, not the bird
Almost all of the useful work is environmental, and most of it is done before the hot weather arrives.
Track the sun, not the shade.
Sit in the room at three in the afternoon in summer and see where the light falls. Owners place cages using the light at the time they are usually home, which is rarely the hottest hour.
Get the cage away from glass.
Not just out of direct sun. Glass radiates heat inward for hours after the sun has moved on, and a cage against a sunlit window is receiving that heat.
Use blinds, curtains, external shade or reflective film.
Shading the outside of the glass is more effective than shading the inside, because it stops the heat before it enters.
Think about the floor level.
Hot air rises. Within a room, the lower part of a tall cage is usually cooler, so a bird with a full height cage has somewhere to go. A cage on a stand near the ceiling of a warm room does not.
Measure at the bird's height.
A thermometer at the cage, at perch level, tells you what the bird experiences. A room thermostat on the wall does not.
Avoid appliance heat.
Refrigerator exhausts, televisions, computers and the back of a fish tank all warm their surroundings continuously.
Keep the kitchen out of the equation.
Overheated non stick cookware releases fumes that kill birds quickly, and hot weather is exactly when people cook with windows shut and fans blowing air around the flat. The bird should not be in or next to the kitchen at any time of year, and least of all when air is being circulated.
Water is the tool that actually cools

Airflow helps, but wet feathers help more. Note where the sunlight reaches: that patch of floor moves through the day.
Bathing and misting.
Wetting the feathers gives a bird an evaporative surface it does not naturally have. A shallow dish, a spray bottle set to a fine mist, or a shower perch all work. Mist above the bird and let it fall, rather than spraying into the face.
Use plain water at room temperature or a little cooler. Nothing else goes in it.
Offer more water sources than usual.
Two or three bowls in different positions, so a bird that is uncomfortable does not have to cross a hot patch of cage to drink.
Change water more often.
Warm water plus food debris plus a bird that bathes in its bowl grows bacteria fast. In hot weather, change and rinse bowls at least twice a day.
Watch intake.
Increased drinking in hot weather is expected. Increased drinking that continues after the weather cools is a medical sign and needs investigating.
Wet fruit and vegetables help.
Cucumber, melon and leafy greens contribute water and are usually taken readily by birds that will not drink more.
Fans, air conditioning and their failure modes
Fans.
A fan lowers the effective temperature by moving air past the bird and by preventing a pocket of warm air building around the cage. It works far better on a bird that is wet than on a dry one.
Direct the airflow across the room rather than straight at the cage, and never leave a fan blowing continuously onto one perch. A bird cannot move away from a fixed draught.
Any fan a bird can reach must have a guard fine enough that a beak or toe cannot pass through it.
Air conditioning.
Effective and generally safe if the outlet is not blowing directly onto the bird and if the room does not swing between extremes. Air conditioning also dries the air, which most parrots do not love and which matters more for species from humid regions.
The bigger risk with air conditioning is dependence: a bird that has known nothing else is unprepared when it fails.
Evaporative coolers.
They cool by adding water to the air, so they help in dry climates and make matters worse in humid ones.
Ice and frozen bottles.
A frozen water bottle wrapped in a towel and placed against the outside of the cage gives a cool surface without wetting the bird or chilling it abruptly. Do not put ice in drinking water in quantities that make it uncomfortably cold, and do not put a bird into cold water.
Outdoor aviaries and balconies
An outdoor aviary is the best enrichment most parrots ever get and the most dangerous place they can be in a heatwave.
Shade must exist at every hour.
Check the aviary at mid morning, midday, mid afternoon and early evening. A roof that shades at noon can leave the whole flight in low sun at five o'clock.
Provide a cool retreat.
Ground level, in deep shade, with a solid surface that stays cooler than the air, and if possible a section of solid roof with insulation rather than bare metal or clear plastic.
Water, twice checked.
Shallow bathing water and drinking water, both checked at least twice a day. Water in a metal dish in the sun becomes too hot to drink.
Misting.
A garden misting line on a timer transforms an aviary in dry heat. In humid climates it helps much less.
Never leave a bird outside unattended in a heatwave.
The margin between a warm afternoon and a fatal one is small, and it changes with cloud cover.
When it is going wrong
The signs progress in a fairly consistent order: wings held slightly away from the body, then open beak breathing, then throat fluttering, then wings held wide with the bird leaning forward, then unsteadiness, then collapse.
Two things owners get wrong.
The first is treating early open beak breathing as normal because dogs pant. In a bird it means the passive routes are no longer enough.
The second is reading the quiet phase as improvement. A bird that stops working at breathing and becomes still and unresponsive is deteriorating, not settling.
First response.
Move the bird to the coolest room in the house, ideally one with a tiled or stone floor. Mist with cool water. Offer water but never pour it into the beak. Increase airflow across the room. Contact an avian veterinarian, because a bird that has overheated can deteriorate afterwards from organ damage even when it looks better.
The plan for a power cut
The failure modes of the usual advice
"Put the cage by the window so the bird gets sunlight."
Sunlight through glass provides little of the ultraviolet benefit people expect, because ordinary window glass blocks most of it, and it provides all of the heat. Use a proper avian ultraviolet lamp for the light and keep the cage out of the sun for the heat.
"Point a fan at the cage."
A continuous draught on a bird that cannot move away is its own problem, and a dry bird gains less from airflow than a damp one. Move the air in the room, and wet the bird.
"Give it ice water to cool down."
A bird cools from the outside and through its airway, not by drinking cold water. Very cold water can put a compromised bird off drinking at the moment hydration matters most.
"It is fine, it is a tropical bird."
Tropical forest is shaded, humid and full of water. It is not a closed room with a metal cage in the afternoon sun.
"Mist it with a cooling spray."
Only water. Aloe products marketed for birds are used by some keepers, but scented sprays, insecticidal sprays and anything containing alcohol or essential oils have no place near a bird's respiratory system.
"Open all the windows."
Cross ventilation helps when the outside air is cooler than the inside air, and makes things worse when it is not. It also introduces the escape risk that kills more parrots than heat does. Any open window near a bird needs a screen.
What never to do
Do not leave a bird unattended outdoors, in a car, on a balcony or in a conservatory in warm weather.
Do not wrap, towel or restrain an overheating bird.
Do not submerge a bird in water, or use ice water on a collapsing bird.
Do not use fans without guards where a bird can reach them.
Do not cook with non stick pans, self cleaning ovens or overheated oil in a home with a bird, and least of all with the air being circulated.
Do not assume a bird that has recovered from overheating is fine. Have it checked.

When to get help
Contact an avian veterinarian immediately for a bird that is unsteady, collapsed, found on the cage floor, or breathing with an open beak and drooped wings after you have cooled the environment.
Contact them the same day for a bird that has been in a hot car, conservatory or sunlit room, even if it now seems normal, because heat injury can declare itself hours later.
Contact them promptly for a bird whose water intake has increased and stayed high after the weather cooled, or one that has become quiet and fluffed rather than active in warm conditions, because in a bird those changes are more often illness than weather.
