Parrots and household health: psittacosis, feather dust and the air that goes both ways
A parrot shares your air completely, and the risk runs both ways. Household fumes from non-stick coatings, aerosols and diffusers kill birds at concentrations people do not notice, while dust from dried droppings and feathers causes psittacosis and bird fancier's lung in people, both of which doctors routinely miss. A parrot living in a busy household with children, adults and older relatives creates a two-way health question. Ordinary household air kills birds faster than it harms people, and ordinary bird dust causes human illness that doctors routinely miss.
Both directions are manageable, and both are managed by the same small set of habits: control the air, clean wet rather than dry, wash hands, and tell the professionals on both sides that the other exists.
- Never heat non-stick cookware, and never run a self-cleaning oven cycle, in a home with a bird. The fumes can kill within minutes.
- No aerosols, plug-in fragrances, scented candles, incense, essential oil diffusers or smoking indoors.
- Wipe droppings up damp. Dry sweeping and dry vacuuming turn them into breathable dust, which is the route that infects people.
- Tell your doctor you keep a parrot at the start of any chest or flu-like illness. It changes what they test for and what they prescribe.
- Never kiss a parrot on the beak or share food from your mouth or fork. Human oral bacteria cause serious infections in birds.

Polytetrafluoroethylene and related coatings release fumes when they get hot. Birds have the most efficient respiratory system of any land vertebrate, and it concentrates inhaled toxins with extraordinary speed. A pan left dry on a hob, a self-cleaning oven cycle, a non-stick air fryer, an ironing board cover, a hair straightener or a portable heater with a coated element can be enough. There is no treatment worth relying on and no reliable early sign. Remove the sources; do not try to manage them with ventilation.

Why a parrot is the most vulnerable animal in your house
Birds do not breathe the way mammals do. They have no diaphragm, and their lungs do not inflate and deflate. Instead, a system of air sacs pumps air in one direction through fine tubes in a rigid lung, and gas exchange happens on both the in-breath and the out-breath.
The consequence is a system with no significant reservoir of stale air, a very large exchange surface for the animal's size, and a very high efficiency of extraction. Everything good about that design applies equally to whatever is dissolved in the air.
That is why birds were once carried into mines. A bird registers an airborne toxin at a concentration that a person in the same room has not begun to notice, and it registers it as collapse rather than as a cough.
Two practical rules follow.
Ventilation is not a control for a serious airborne hazard. By the time you have opened a window, a bird in the same air space has already had the exposure.
"It does not smell strong" means nothing. Many of the fumes involved are odourless at lethal concentrations, and the ones you can smell, such as burnt oil, are not the dangerous ones.
The household air audit
Kitchen. Non-stick pans, non-stick bakeware, air fryers with coated baskets, oven drip liners, self-cleaning oven cycles, and burnt oil or scorched food. The bird should not live in or next to the kitchen, and should be in a different room with the door closed while cooking happens.
Cleaning cupboard. Oven cleaner, bleach, ammonia, and any product used as a spray. Never mix bleach with anything. Use unscented products, use them when the bird is out of the air space, and ventilate before it returns.
Fragrance. Plug-in air fresheners, reed diffusers, scented candles, incense, wax melts and essential oil diffusers are all continuous, low-level airborne exposures. Essential oils are a particular problem because owners buy them believing they are natural and therefore safe. Tea tree, eucalyptus and citrus oils are not safe around birds.
Personal care. Hairspray, dry shampoo, deodorant and perfume used as aerosols. Hair straighteners and hairdryers with coated plates.
Smoking and vaping. Not just the smoke. Residue on hands transfers to feathers and feet during handling and is a recognised cause of skin and feather damage as well as respiratory disease.
Building work and new furnishings. Fresh paint, varnish, new carpet, chipboard furniture and foam offgas for weeks. Move the bird out of the room, not just to the other side of it.
Heating. Unvented gas heaters and any appliance producing carbon monoxide. A working carbon monoxide alarm protects the whole household and the bird protects nobody, contrary to the old idea, because by the time the bird reacts the exposure is already substantial.
What a well-meaning household member will do wrong

The bird's own zone, away from the kitchen, with its own bowls and its own toys. Everything the bird eats or chews should come from here.
In a household with several adults, the person who sets the rules is rarely the person who breaks them. It is usually someone who thinks a small kindness is harmless.
Sharing food. Avocado, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, salt, onion, garlic and xylitol all cause harm in parrots, and apple and stone-fruit pips contain cyanogenic compounds. A shared biscuit is not a treat, it is a salt and fat load in an animal whose liver is already the commonest organ to fail in captivity.
Sharing saliva. Human mouth flora contains large numbers of bacteria that parrots are poorly equipped to handle. Kissing a bird on the beak, offering food from your own fork, and letting a bird take food from your mouth are all recognised routes to serious bacterial infection in the bird.
Letting the bird chew household items. Toothbrushes, cutlery, cups and anything else that has been in a human mouth carry the same problem. So do costume jewellery, older painted items, curtain weights and craft materials, because of heavy metals.
Opening windows and doors. In a busy household this is how birds are lost. Agree one rule, and use it every time.
Handing the bird to a child. Bites are not the only issue. A startled bird flies, and a child's instinct is to close their hands.
Psittacosis: what your doctor will not think of
Psittacosis, sometimes called parrot fever or avian chlamydiosis, is caused by the bacterium Chlamydia psittaci. It is the single most important reason a household should tell its doctor that it keeps a parrot.
How it moves. The organism is shed in droppings and respiratory secretions. Those dry, become dust, and are inhaled. Handling and being bitten are minor routes by comparison. The dust route is why cleaning technique matters so much.
Why a healthy bird is not reassuring. Birds carry and shed the organism intermittently, often with no signs at all. Shedding increases under stress: a new home, a house move, breeding, a change in the household, another illness. A bird that has been fine for years can start shedding after a stressful month.
What it looks like in the bird. Fluffed feathers, quiet, reduced appetite, weight loss, respiratory noise or nasal discharge, and diarrhoea. The characteristic clue is green or yellow-green staining of the urate portion of the droppings, which reflects liver involvement. None of this is exclusive to psittacosis, but the combination in a parrot warrants testing.
What it looks like in people. Usually an abrupt flu-like illness: high fever, chills, a notably severe headache, muscle aches and a dry cough. It can progress to an atypical pneumonia. Some infections are mild and some are severe, and severity is higher in older adults, in pregnancy, and in anyone immunosuppressed.
Why it gets missed. The presentation looks like influenza or a community-acquired pneumonia, and standard first-line antibiotics for chest infection are not the ones that treat it. Doctors do not routinely ask about birds. Saying "we keep a parrot" changes the differential and the prescription, and it is the most useful thing an owner can do.
It is a notifiable or reportable condition in many countries, so expect the case to be followed up, and expect your bird to be tested.
Testing the bird. An avian vet can test using swabs and droppings, usually by PCR. Because shedding is intermittent, a single negative result is reassuring rather than conclusive, and your vet may pool samples across several days.
Bird fancier's lung, and why it is the quiet one
Psittacosis announces itself. The other bird-related lung disease does not.
Hypersensitivity pneumonitis, known as bird fancier's lung, is an immune reaction to inhaled proteins from feather dust and droppings. It is not an infection, and antibiotics do nothing for it.
The acute form appears hours after a heavy exposure, such as a long cage clean, with fever, chills, cough and breathlessness that settle over a day or two and are usually blamed on a virus.
The chronic form is the dangerous one. It builds over months to years of continuous low-level exposure and presents as gradually worsening breathlessness on exertion, a dry cough, tiredness and weight loss. Because it comes on slowly and the household adapts around it, it is often attributed to age or fitness. Continued exposure can lead to permanent lung scarring.
Risk tracks dust. Cockatoos, cockatiels and African greys carry powder down feathers that continuously produce fine white powder, and homes with those species are dustier than homes with Amazons, macaws or conures. A room with poor ventilation, a bird sleeping in a bedroom, and dry cleaning methods all raise exposure.
The treatment that matters most is reducing exposure, which is entirely within a household's control.
The controls that actually work
Who in the household needs a different plan
Infants and toddlers. Hand to mouth behaviour is constant, and floor level is where dropped dust and food ends up. Keep the cage in a room with a door, keep floor time supervised, and clean damp.
Pregnancy. Psittacosis in pregnancy can be severe. This does not mean rehoming the bird. It means someone else does the cage cleaning, the bird stays out of the bedroom, and the pregnancy team is told about the bird.
Older adults. Thinner skin means a bite or a scratch that would be trivial in an adult becomes a significant wound. Existing lung disease means dust matters more. Hearing aids amplify a cockatoo scream to a genuinely painful level.
Anyone immunosuppressed. Chemotherapy, transplant medication, long-term steroids or an immune condition all raise the stakes for every organism in this article. The plan is written with their medical team, not guessed at, and it usually consists of separation of duties rather than removal of the bird.
Anyone with asthma. Feather dust is a potent trigger. A powder-down species in a small flat with an asthmatic occupant is a combination worth thinking hard about before acquiring the bird.
What never to do
Never rehome or euthanise a bird because a household member has become ill, before the bird has been tested. Both psittacosis and hypersensitivity pneumonitis are managed, not solved by removal, and a wrong assumption costs the bird its home for nothing.
Never dry-sweep or dry-vacuum a cage tray. It is the single most efficient way to inhale what you are cleaning up.
Never use an aerosol, a diffuser or a scented product in the bird's air space.
Never treat a bird bite as a scratch. Parrot beaks crush and tear, wounds are deeper than they look, and they become infected. Face and eye injuries in children are the reason large parrots and unsupervised children do not mix.
Never assume a quiet bird is a well bird. Parrots conceal illness because in the wild an obviously sick bird is a target. By the time a parrot looks ill to a casual observer, it has usually been ill for a while.
Never skip quarantine for a new bird because it "came from a good breeder". Quarantine protects the bird you already have and the people you already live with.

When to get help

A workable arrangement: the bird has its own zone with its own things, the kitchen is a separate air space, and the household knows the rules.
For the bird. Contact an avian vet the same day for fluffed, quiet behaviour, weight loss, any change in the droppings including green or yellow staining of the urates, tail bobbing or open-mouth breathing, or any known exposure to fumes. Treat any exposure to overheated non-stick coating as an emergency and move the bird to fresh air immediately.
For people. Seek medical advice promptly for a sudden high fever with a severe headache and a dry cough, and say that there is a parrot in the household. Seek advice for breathlessness that has developed gradually over months, and say how long you have kept birds and which species.
Before a new arrival. Book an avian vet check and ask about chlamydia testing before any new bird joins a household containing an infant, a pregnancy, an older adult with lung disease, or anyone immunosuppressed.

What not to allow. Anything that has been in a human mouth carries bacteria that parrots handle badly, and household plastics are not chew toys.
None of this makes a parrot an unreasonable pet for a shared household. It makes it a pet whose household needs a written set of rules that everyone follows, including the people who only visit.
