Parrot vomiting versus regurgitation: telling them apart and what each means

Quick answer

Two behaviours look similar and mean opposite things. Where the material lands tells you which one you are watching.

Parrots bring food back up for two completely different reasons. Regurgitation is a deliberate social behaviour: the bird pumps its neck, bobs its head, and places a neat pile of food on a chosen person, mirror or toy. Vomiting is involuntary: the bird flicks its head from side to side and flings material outwards, so it ends up on the cage bars, the walls, and stuck to the feathers of its own head and shoulders.

Seed or food crusted on the top of the head is the single most reliable sign that you are dealing with vomiting rather than regurgitation, and vomiting in a parrot is a medical problem.

  • Watch where the material lands. Neat pile in front of a favourite object means regurgitation. Splattered sideways with debris on the head means vomiting.
  • Vomiting more than once, or vomiting with any change in the droppings, weight, posture or breathing, needs a same-day avian appointment.
  • Whole undigested seeds in the droppings alongside bringing food up is a specific and serious combination. It points at the stomach failing to grind and digest.
  • Check the cage and toys for metal. Zinc and lead poisoning are common causes of vomiting in parrots and come from galvanised wire, clips, weights and cheap jewellery.
  • Hormonal regurgitation is not an illness, but it flags a hormonal state that leads to chronic egg laying and reproductive disease if it is fed by the routine at home.

Where the food actually comes from

A parrot's digestive tract has features no mammal has, and they explain both behaviours.

Food swallowed passes into the crop, a thin-walled storage pouch at the base of the neck that can be seen and gently felt when full. From there it moves into the proventriculus, the glandular stomach that produces acid and enzymes, then into the ventriculus, the muscular grinding stomach that does the work teeth would do in a mammal.

Regurgitation is the deliberate reverse movement of crop contents. Parrots do it to feed a mate or a chick, and companion parrots do it to the human, mirror or toy they have selected as a partner. It is under voluntary control. The bird stretches its neck upward, bobs the head rhythmically, and produces a neat, moist pile of recognisable food. It usually looks pleased with itself, with feathers slightly raised at the neck and pupils rapidly narrowing and widening.

Vomiting is involuntary expulsion of material, often from beyond the crop. The bird shakes its head sharply from side to side, which throws material outwards in an arc. That is why vomit lands on the bars, the wall and the bird itself, and why crusted food on the crown of the head is so diagnostic.

There is a middle case worth naming. A bird can regurgitate involuntarily because something is compressing or irritating the crop, without generalised nausea. The budgerigar with an enlarged thyroid is the classic example.

Once versus repeatedly

Once, in a bright bird with normal droppings.

A single episode can follow a frightening event, travel, a large gulped meal, a new food, or a small amount of something irritant. It can also be the first episode of a serious illness. The correct response is not to relax and not to panic: watch closely for 24 hours, keep the bird warm and quiet, weigh it, keep the droppings on white paper, and film any repeat.

More than once.

Two or more episodes changes the situation entirely. Repeated vomiting in a parrot is a veterinary problem in every case, because the list of causes includes several that are fatal if left and none that resolve reliably on their own.

Chronic, on and off, over weeks.

Usually the most serious presentation, and the one owners bring in latest. Chronic intermittent vomiting with weight loss points strongly at gastrointestinal disease that has been progressing for a long time.

Two of these deserve emphasis because owners can act on them today.

Metal. Parrots chew hardware deliberately. Galvanised mesh, quick-links, cheap clips, curtain weights, stained glass, some paints and costume jewellery all carry zinc or lead. Go over the cage and every toy and remove anything you cannot verify as bird-safe. If a parrot is vomiting with any neurological sign, tell the vet what it has had access to, because heavy metal poisoning is treatable and is missed when nobody mentions the cage.

Diet. An all-seed diet underlies several entries in the table at once: fatty liver disease, thyroid enlargement in budgerigars, and vitamin A deficiency that predisposes to infection in the mouth and crop. Diet change is slow work and is not an emergency treatment, but it is often the underlying answer.

Read the droppings

A parrot dropping has three parts, and separating them is one of the most useful skills an owner can learn. The faeces is the solid coiled portion. The urates are the white or cream part. The urine is clear liquid.

Line the cage floor with white paper and photograph the droppings for the vet. Then look for these.

Whole undigested seeds in the faeces. Food is passing through without being ground. This is a significant finding and always worth reporting.

Green or lime-coloured urates. Suggests liver involvement or reduced food intake.

More liquid than usual. Can be normal after fruit or a stressful event, but persistent polyuria matters.

Very few droppings. A bird that is not eating produces small dark scant droppings. Count them, because the number is easier to judge than the appearance.

Red or black material. Blood, from anywhere in the tract. Same-day.

What to do at home while you arrange the appointment

Keep the bird warm, quiet and low. Remove high perches so it cannot fall, and put food and water within easy reach at floor level if it is weak.

Do not withhold food and water on the assumption that resting the stomach helps. Parrots have small energy reserves and a bird that stops eating for a day is in a different and worse situation than it was.

Do not offer grit. Grit is unnecessary for hookbilled parrots and a bird that is unwell may gorge on it and impact its stomach.

Weigh daily, in grams, at the same time, ideally before the first meal. Write it down.

Save the vomited material if you can, particularly if it is unusual in colour or contains anything you do not recognise.

Take a photograph of the crop area, and gently feel it. A crop that stays full and doughy hours after a meal is not emptying, which is itself a finding.

Film an episode. This is the single most valuable thing you can bring, because it settles the regurgitation question in seconds and no description does.

Managing hormonal regurgitation

If the behaviour is genuinely regurgitation, the bird is not ill. But a companion parrot in a sustained reproductive state is at real risk of chronic egg laying, egg binding, reproductive tract disease and hormonally driven aggression and feather damage. The regurgitation is a signal worth acting on.

Lengthen the night. Photoperiod is the master switch for reproductive hormones. A long, genuinely dark, uninterrupted night in a quiet room reduces the drive more effectively than anything else on this list.

Change how you touch the bird. Stroking the back, the tail base and under the wings is sexual contact in parrot terms. Restrict handling to the head and neck.

Remove nest sites. Cardboard boxes, tents, huts, cupboards, the space behind the sofa, dark drawers. Anything cavity-like invites nesting.

Rethink the abundance. Constant unlimited soft warm food and a high-fat diet signal a good breeding season. Move to measured meals and foraging.

Change the environment. Rearranging the cage furniture and rotating toys works against the settled, secure territory a breeding bird wants.

Do not simply push the bird away when it regurgitates. It is a bonding behaviour, and rejection at the moment it offers food is confusing rather than instructive. Change the conditions that generate the hormonal state instead.

A close look at healthy eyes and plumage
Bright eye, clean nostrils, tight feathering and no crusting on the head. This is the baseline to compare against.

What differs by species

Budgerigars. Iodine deficiency on an all-seed diet enlarges the thyroid, which presses on the oesophagus and crop and produces regurgitation with a squeaking or clicking sound on breathing. Avian gastric yeast is also common in this species and causes chronic vomiting with weight loss.

Cockatiels. Prolific hormonal regurgitators, and prone to chronic egg laying in hens. Also the species most affected by night frights, which produce their own separate emergencies.

Amazons and other seed-fed larger parrots. Fatty liver disease is common, and vomiting with green urates in an overweight Amazon on a seed diet points there.

Macaws and conures. Historically over-represented in proventricular dilatation disease, so weight loss with whole seed in the droppings deserves particular attention.

African greys. Less prone to hormonal regurgitation than cockatiels, but vulnerable to calcium disturbance, so any weakness or fitting alongside vomiting must be reported.

Lories and lorikeets. Nectar feeders with liquid droppings normally, so the usual dropping assessment does not transfer. Judge changes against that bird's own baseline.

Hand-reared chicks of any species. Crop stasis, crop burn from over-hot formula, and crop infections are the dominant causes, and all move quickly. A chick with a slow crop is an emergency.

What the vet will want

Expect the vet to examine the crop, weigh the bird, look in the mouth, and depending on findings take radiographs, a crop or faecal sample, and blood. Radiographs are particularly important where metal ingestion is possible, because metal fragments are visible on an image and the diagnosis is otherwise easy to miss.

Never hold a vomiting bird head down, shake it, or swing it to clear the airway. This is how birds aspirate and die.

Never syringe fluids or food into a bird that is actively vomiting or is weak, unless a vet has shown you how and told you to.

Never assume a bird that is bright and talking is not seriously ill. Hiding illness is what the species does.

Never treat with leftover antibiotics or human medication.

Never dismiss whole seeds in the droppings as normal. It is one of the few findings that points directly at a specific group of diseases.

Never leave galvanised wire, unknown metal clips or costume jewellery within reach while you wait for the appointment.

Never withhold food to settle the stomach.

Never push a hormonal bird away and consider the problem handled. Change the light, the touching and the nest sites instead.

My parrot regurgitates on me every evening. Should I stop it?
Not by rejecting the bird at the moment it offers food, which teaches nothing useful. Reduce the hormonal drive instead: a longer genuinely dark night, head and neck contact only, no cavities or tents, and measured meals rather than constant abundance. If the behaviour continues alongside weight loss or any change in droppings, have it checked, because chronic regurgitation can also be mechanical.
Is it dangerous for a bird to vomit once?
Not necessarily, but it cannot be dismissed. The safe approach is 24 hours of close observation with daily weights and white paper under the cage, and a same-day appointment if it happens again or if anything else changes.
Why does the vet want to X-ray for vomiting?
Because several important causes are visible on an image and invisible on examination: metal fragments in the stomach, a dilated proventriculus, an egg, a foreign body and an enlarged liver. It is one of the highest-yield tests in an unwell parrot.
Can stress alone make a parrot vomit?
A single episode after a genuine fright or a car journey happens. Recurrent vomiting attributed to stress is almost always something else that has not been diagnosed yet, and treating it as behavioural loses time that matters.

When to get help

Go now for vomiting with laboured breathing, tail bobbing, material at the nostrils, collapse, tremors or seizures, a bird that cannot perch, or a hen straining on the cage floor.

Go the same day for a second episode of vomiting, vomiting with whole seeds in the droppings, green or lime urates, blood, a crop that will not empty, or any vomiting in a hand-reared chick.

Go within a few days for chronic intermittent bringing up of food with weight loss, even in a bird that seems otherwise well, because that pattern is the one associated with the slowest and most serious diseases.
