Teaching words is shaping like any other behaviour: mark the approximation you want, reinforce it immediately, and keep the sessions short.

How the sound is made

The syrinx sits at the bottom of the trachea, where it divides into the two bronchi. Air driven from the air sacs passes over membranes that vibrate, and muscles around the structure change the tension and the airflow to alter pitch and volume.

Songbirds have a syrinx with two independently controllable halves and a large number of small muscles, which is why some can sing two notes at once. Parrots have a simpler arrangement with fewer intrinsic muscles, sitting higher up on the trachea.

What parrots have instead is exceptional control of the tongue. Human speech sounds are shaped mainly by the tongue and lips changing the resonance of the vocal tract, and parrots do something functionally similar with a thick muscular tongue and a beak they can open and close precisely. That is the reason parrot speech is intelligible in a way that, for instance, a dog's vocalisation never could be, despite the underlying sound production being completely different from ours.

It also explains a practical point. A parrot learning a word is learning a motor pattern of airflow, syringeal tension and tongue position. Like any motor skill it improves with practice, which is why a new word usually starts as an unrecognisable mumble and sharpens over days or weeks. Rewarding the early rough version is how you get the polished one.

Why they imitate, and what that means for what they learn

Wild parrots live in flocks with a social structure that depends on knowing who is who over distance and through dense vegetation. They do that with learned contact calls. Flocks develop local dialects, pairs develop shared signatures, and individuals adjust their calls to match the birds they are close to.

Vocal imitation is therefore a social bonding behaviour, not a party trick. The bird is trying to sound like its flock.

For a pet parrot, the flock is your household. It will preferentially learn:

Sounds that are repeated often. The microwave, the doorbell, the phone, the kettle, a particular ringtone.

Sounds made with emotion. Laughter, exclamations, arguments, and the word people say when they drop something.

Sounds that produce a reaction. If a noise reliably makes a human appear, the bird will use it. This is the mechanism behind most screaming problems.

Sounds directed at the bird by the person it is bonded to.

The practical consequence is that you are always teaching, and most of what you teach is accidental. If you want control over the vocabulary, the way to get it is to make the words you want more frequent, more emotionally salient and more consistently rewarded than the ones you do not.

Context labelling: the method that works

The approach that produces meaningful, well-used vocabulary is to attach the word to the event rather than to repeat it in a vacuum.

Pick one word and one event.

Short, distinct, and tied to something that happens several times a day. Handing over a favourite food, uncovering the cage in the morning, stepping onto your hand, leaving the room.

Say it at the moment, every time.

The same word, the same inflection, at the same point in the sequence. Consistency of inflection matters more than people expect, because the bird is copying a sound pattern, not a dictionary entry.

Reinforce any approximation immediately.

The first attempt will not sound like the word. Mark it, with a clicker or a consistent short verbal marker, and deliver something the bird wants within a second or two. Attention, a favoured food, or the object itself if the word names it.

Raise the criterion slowly.

Once the rough version is reliable, reinforce only the closer attempts. This is ordinary shaping and it works the same way it does for step-up or station training.

Keep sessions short and frequent.

A minute or two, several times a day, beats a long session. Parrots disengage quickly and a session that continues past the bird's interest teaches it that training is boring.

Use the bird's own motivation.

Train before a meal rather than after, use the food the bird actually loves rather than the one you think is healthiest for a reward, and stop while it still wants more.

Consider the model and rival approach.

Two people take turns: one asks for the word and the other answers correctly and receives the reward. Birds are social learners and watching another individual be rewarded for a sound is a powerful demonstration. It is more work than solo training and it is often far more effective, particularly for object labels.

What does not work

Playing recordings on a loop.

A recording cannot respond, cannot reward, and cannot vary. Birds habituate to it, and a repeating audio track in a room the bird cannot leave is closer to noise pollution than to teaching. Some birds become frustrated and vocalise more as a result.

Leaving the television or radio on for company.

It provides sound but not interaction, and it competes with you for the bird's attention.

Repeating a word at the bird dozens of times in a row.

Without a context and without reinforcement, this is just noise.

Withholding food to increase motivation.

Reducing a parrot's food to make it work harder is unnecessary and risky. Use timing and reward value instead, and never manipulate a bird's weight for training without veterinary supervision.

Punishing the wrong sound.

Shouting at a screaming bird gives it exactly what screaming is for: a reaction from the flock. It is one of the most reliable ways to make screaming worse.

Variation you should expect

Species differences are real but unreliable as a prediction. African greys, amazons, budgerigars, Indian ringnecks and quaker parakeets are all commonly good talkers, and budgerigars in particular can build very large vocabularies despite their size. Cockatiels are usually better at whistles than words. Macaws often speak with a smaller vocabulary but great volume. Cockatoos are variable and often poor. Every one of these has exceptions in both directions.

Individuals vary enormously within a species. Two African greys from the same clutch can differ completely.

Sex has less influence than folklore suggests in most species, though there are species where males are the more prolific mimics.

Age matters at the start but not for long. Young birds pick up sounds readily, and most parrots continue to learn new sounds throughout life. A bird acquired as an adult can start talking years later.

Settling matters more than age. A rehomed or newly acquired bird often says nothing for months, then begins once it is genuinely settled. Silence in a new bird is not a personality assessment.

Some birds never talk, and that has no bearing on their intelligence, their bond with you, or their welfare. Buying a parrot because you want a talking bird is one of the more common reasons parrots end up needing rehoming.

Unwanted words, and the honest position on them

You cannot delete a word from a parrot. Once it is learned it is in the repertoire, potentially for decades, and parrots have long lives and are frequently rehomed. A word taught for a laugh follows the bird to its next home, and to the one after that.

What you can do is reduce how often it is used, by removing everything that reinforces it.

Give absolutely no reaction. Not laughter, not a look, not leaving the room, not saying no. Any response is attention, and attention is the reward.

Tell everyone in the household. One person laughing once maintains the behaviour indefinitely, because intermittent reinforcement is the most durable kind.

Reinforce an alternative. Pick a sound you like and reward it generously. Behaviour that gets reinforced increases; behaviour that never pays off declines.

Expect it to take a long time, and expect a temporary increase before it decreases. When a previously rewarded behaviour stops working, animals try harder before they give up.

Accept some permanence. Many long-lived parrots keep a word in reserve and produce it occasionally for the rest of their lives.

The practical conclusion is preventive. Decide before you teach anything whether you would be comfortable with a stranger hearing it in twenty years.

What never to do

Do not teach words or sounds you would not want repeated forever.

Do not shout at a screaming bird.

Do not leave a recording playing on a loop.

Do not restrict food to increase training motivation.

Do not punish a bird for vocalising. Vocalising is normal parrot behaviour and suppressing it causes other problems.

Do not imitate a scream back at the bird, even in frustration. It is a contact call and you have just answered it.

Do not assume a silent bird is unhappy, or a talkative one is happy. Speech is not a welfare measure.

Do not ignore a change in voice quality.

Do not use a mirror as a substitute for interaction in a bird with hormonal or contact-calling problems.

How long does it take to teach a parrot to talk?
There is no reliable answer, because the range runs from a bird that picks up a word in a day to a bird that never speaks at all. What you can control is the rate of opportunity: a word tied to an event that happens six times a day gets six trials a day, and one practised in a five-minute session gets far fewer. If several weeks of consistent context labelling produce nothing, the useful move is to change the word or the event rather than to try harder with the same one.
My parrot only talks when I leave the room. Why?
Because that is what contact calls are for. In a flock, a bird that loses sight of its partner calls to locate them, and your parrot has learned that a particular sound is the right one to use when you disappear. It is a sign of a normal bond rather than a problem. If it escalates into persistent screaming, the answer is to answer the acceptable call reliably from wherever you are, so the bird does not need to escalate to get a reply.
Is it cruel to teach a parrot to swear?
It is not physically harmful, but it is a genuine welfare risk over a long life. Parrots outlive many households and are rehomed often, and a bird with a vocabulary that makes it unsuitable for a family home or a sanctuary is harder to place. You also cannot take a word back once it is learned. The reasonable test is whether you would be comfortable with the bird saying it in front of anyone, in any home, for the next several decades.
My parrot has stopped talking. Should I be worried?
Possibly, and it is worth taking seriously. Birds hide illness, and a reduction in vocalising is one of the earliest and most easily overlooked signs. Look at the whole animal: appetite, droppings, weight, whether it is fluffed or sitting low, and whether the voice sounds different rather than simply absent. A hoarse or effortful voice points at the airway and needs an avian vet appointment. Silence in a settled adult bird that is otherwise entirely normal can also follow a change in routine or a moult, but it is worth ruling out illness first.

When to get help

Book an avian vet appointment the same week for a change in voice quality, a hoarse or breathy sound, visible effort when vocalising, tail bobbing with breathing, or a talkative bird that has gone quiet.

Go the same day if reduced vocalising comes with a fluffed posture, sitting on the cage floor, appetite loss, or any change in droppings, since these together indicate an unwell bird.

Ask for behavioural help from an experienced force-free parrot trainer or a veterinary behaviourist if screaming has become established, if the bird is self-injuring, or if contact calling has escalated to the point that it is affecting the household. Those are solvable problems and they are much easier to address early.

Bring the dated voice recordings, the bird's weight history, the species and age, the diet, and a note of when the change was first noticed. For a vocal change specifically, an avian vet will usually want to examine the airway and may recommend imaging and testing for fungal disease, because the syrinx cannot be assessed from outside.
