Parrot suspected fracture: first response and safe transport

Quick answer
The useful things in the first ten minutes are a dark, warm, padded container and a phone call. Everything else can make the injury worse.
A parrot with a suspected fracture needs three things from you: containment, warmth and darkness, and a fast journey to an avian vet. It does not need a splint, a bandage, a painkiller or an examination.
Speed matters here for a reason owners are rarely told. Bird bone heals quickly, and a fracture left unaligned for a week or two can knit in the wrong position permanently. A wing that has healed crooked cannot simply be rebroken and fixed later without a much bigger operation.
- Contain the bird in a small, dark, ventilated box with a flat, padded, non-slip floor and no perches.
- Never wrap anything around a bird's body. Birds breathe by moving the sternum, and a body wrap suffocates them.
- Never give human painkillers. Paracetamol and ibuprofen are dangerous in birds.
- Keep the bird warm, quiet and unhandled, and phone the practice while someone else prepares the box.
- Take a short video and a photograph before you box the bird, because it will not repeat the behaviour in a consulting room.

Do not bandage, tape or wrap a bird's body, and do not hold it around the chest.
Birds have no diaphragm. Air is moved through the lungs and air sacs by the ribs and sternum swinging outwards and back with every breath. Anything that grips the chest, including a firm hand, a towel wrapped around the trunk or a home-made bandage, prevents that movement and the bird asphyxiates. This happens in minutes and it happens quietly.
Restrain a bird by controlling the head, with the body supported from underneath and the chest completely free.
Do not give any human medicine. Paracetamol, ibuprofen and aspirin all cause serious harm in birds, and pain relief that is safe in birds exists and is available from a vet within the hour.

Why bird bones break the way they do
Bird skeletons are built for flight, which means light, stiff and thin. The cortex of a long bone is dense and hard but the wall is thin, and the bone has very little flex in it.
The practical consequence is that avian fractures tend to be comminuted, meaning the bone breaks into several sharp pieces rather than into two clean ends. Those fragments cut soft tissue, and because a bird's wing has almost no muscle covering over much of its length, the skin is easily broken from the inside. Open fractures are therefore far more common in birds than in mammals.
Several bones are pneumatic, connected directly to the air sac system rather than filled with marrow. The humerus is the important one. An open fracture of a pneumatic bone creates a direct route from the outside world into the respiratory system, which is why these injuries carry a real risk of air sac infection and why nothing should ever be flushed, sprayed or poured into such a wound.
Healing is fast. That sounds like good news and is the main reason for urgency: the bird will begin building bone across whatever position the fragments are lying in. Left for a week or two, that position becomes permanent. A wing that heals with a rotational twist may never open properly again, and a leg that heals short changes how the bird bears weight for life, which in turn causes pressure sores on the good foot.
What you will actually see
A drooping wing.
A bird holds a healthy wing folded neatly against the body with the tip resting above the tail base. A fractured wing hangs lower than the other, sits away from the body, or slips down repeatedly when the bird tries to tuck it.
Refusal to use a leg.
Standing on one leg is normal in a relaxed bird, but a bird that will not put a foot down when it moves, or that hangs by its beak to get around, is not resting.
Asymmetry at rest.
Look at the bird from behind and from directly in front. Wing tips, shoulders and the angle of the tail should be symmetrical.
Swelling and bruising.
Bruising in birds often looks green rather than purple as it ages, which surprises owners who think they are seeing infection.
A bird on the floor of the cage.
Any parrot that chooses the floor and stays there needs to be seen the same day, whatever the reason.
Silence and stillness.
Birds in pain go quiet, stop preening, sit low and fluffed, and close their eyes. A parrot that has stopped talking and stopped moving is showing you a great deal.
Look-alikes worth separating
A drooping wing can also be a broken blood feather still in growth, which bleeds and makes the bird carry the wing low, a dislocated shoulder or elbow, a soft tissue tear of the elastic membrane at the front of the wing, or a nerve injury from a collision, in which case the wing is limp but painless. It can also be a sign of general illness, but illness usually affects both wings and comes with fluffed feathers and tail bobbing.
A leg that is not being used can be a fracture, a dislocation, a constricting leg ring, a toe or foot caught and injured in cage bars or a toy chain, chronic pododermatitis, or gout with swollen painful joints.
Progressive lameness with no injury deserves particular attention in budgerigars and cockatiels. An internal mass in the abdomen can press on the nerve supply to one leg, producing a limp that develops over days or weeks without any trauma. The bird gradually loses grip strength on one side. This is not a first-aid problem and it will not respond to cage rest, but it is frequently mistaken for one.
Fractures with no real accident are a nutrition problem until proved otherwise. Birds on all-seed diets and hens that lay repeatedly deplete calcium from bone, and the skeleton becomes weak enough to break during a normal landing. If your bird fractured a bone doing something it does every day, ask your vet about calcium status and diet as part of the same visit.

Prepare the container before you pick the bird up. A calm capture into a ready box is far less damaging than a chase.
The first ten minutes
Stop and lower the stimulation.
Turn off televisions, remove other pets and children from the room, and dim the lights. A frightened injured bird will try to fly, and a second impact is a real risk.
Prepare the container before you touch the bird.
A small cardboard box or a solid pet carrier is ideal. Ventilation holes, a flat floor lined with a folded towel or plain kitchen paper for grip, no perches, no toys, no water bowl. A rolled towel around the bird gives it something to lean against without any pressure on the chest.
Capture calmly and correctly.
For a bird that steps up, use the hand it trusts and let it walk into the box. For a bird that will not, use a towel to control the head and gather the bird with the body supported from beneath. Fingers must never close around the chest.
Warmth matters more than owners expect.
An injured bird loses heat fast and shock kills. Keep the room warm, and if the box is cold, warm the room rather than putting a heat source against the bird. Never place a heat pad inside a box with a bird that cannot move away from it.
Darkness is a drug.
A covered box calms a bird more effectively than anything you can give it at home, and calm reduces oxygen demand in an animal that may already be struggling.
Do not offer food or water during transport.
A bird can go for a short journey without either, and both are inhalation risks in a stressed bird lying against the floor of a box.
Handle bleeding, and nothing else.
Apply gentle direct pressure with clean, dry gauze. Styptic powder is appropriate for a bleeding nail or beak tip, not for skin or an open fracture. If a blood feather is bleeding, apply pressure to the base of the feather rather than pulling it out, because pulling in an unrestrained, shocked bird causes more bleeding and can damage the follicle permanently.
Cover an open fracture lightly.
A single layer of clean, dry, non-adherent gauze, no pressure, no flushing, no antiseptic, no ointment. Anything liquid can be drawn into a pneumatic bone. Do not attempt to push exposed bone back under the skin.

If you must look closely, control the head and support the body from below. The chest stays completely free at all times.
Why home splinting fails
The instinct to immobilise is right in principle and wrong in practice, because the technique is unforgiving.
The wing bandage used by vets holds the wing folded in its natural position against the body. Applied slightly wrong, it holds the elbow at the wrong angle, and within days the elastic membrane at the front of the wing tightens permanently. The bird then cannot fully extend the wing again even after the bone has healed. This complication is common enough that avian vets remove and reapply these bandages on a schedule to prevent it.
A leg splint has to include the joint above and below the break to work at all. Getting that wrong produces a splint that pivots on the fracture with every step, which is worse than no splint.
A bandage also removes the bird's ability to balance. A parrot with one wing strapped and no way to counterweight will fall from a perch and land badly, adding a second injury to the first.
Tape sticks to feathers. Removing it takes the feathers with it, and a bird missing flight feathers cannot fly again until the next moult, which may be many months away.
None of that means immobilisation is wrong. It means it is a veterinary procedure done after radiographs have shown which bone is broken and in what direction.
What happens at the clinic
Expect the vet to stabilise before investigating. A bird in shock is not safe to anaesthetise, so warmth, fluids, oxygen and pain relief usually come first, and radiographs may wait some hours. This is not delay, it is the sequence that keeps the bird alive.
Radiographs are essential. A fracture cannot be managed on appearance, because location determines the method entirely.
Treatment options range from an external bandage or splint for stable fractures in small birds, through pins placed inside the bone, to external fixators where pins pass through the skin into the bone and are joined by an external bar. Larger parrots and complex fractures usually need surgical fixation.
Ask directly about the expected outcome for flight and for perching. Some fractures heal to full function, some heal to a bird that can climb and live well but not fly, and a small number, particularly badly contaminated open fractures of the wing tip, end in amputation. Birds adapt to a great deal, and a bird that cannot fly can still have a full life with a rebuilt cage.
Ask what pain relief is going home and for how long. Undertreated pain is a real problem in birds because they hide it so well.
The recovery cage
Rebuild the environment before the bird comes home.
Take out all high perches, ropes, ladders and swings, and put food and water at floor level. Line the floor with soft, non-slip material such as folded towelling that has no loops for toes to catch in.
Lower the cage height, or use a smaller hospital cage, so that a fall is short.
Separate cage mates. A companion bird will investigate a bandage and can remove it in minutes, and birds sometimes attack an obviously injured flock member.
Keep the room warm and quiet, keep the light cycle regular so the bird sleeps properly, and weigh the bird daily on a gram scale. Weight is the most reliable indication of whether a recovering bird is really eating.
Check the bandage or fixator daily for the things your vet tells you to look for, usually swelling of the toes or wing tip, a bad smell, a change in colour, or the bird chewing at it.
Expect the appointments to be frequent. Bandages are changed regularly, and physiotherapy to restore joint movement often starts before the bone has finished healing.
Preventing the next one
What never to do
Do not wrap, tape or bandage the body or the chest.
Do not give human painkillers, and do not give anything left over from a dog or a cat.
Do not apply oil, cream, ointment, antiseptic or spirit to a wound or an open fracture.
Do not pull out a broken blood feather at home in a shocked bird.
Do not offer water in a bowl inside a transport box. A weak bird can drown in very little water and a wet bird chills fast.
Do not test the wing or leg to see how bad it is. Manipulating a fracture drives sharp fragments through soft tissue and can turn a closed fracture into an open one.
Do not wait to see whether it improves overnight. This is the single decision that turns a repairable fracture into a permanent deformity.

When to get help
Go to an avian veterinarian immediately for a hanging wing, a leg that will not bear weight, visible bone, a wound over a swollen limb, bleeding that will not stop, or a bird that has collapsed.
Go the same day after any collision, any fall from height, any contact with a cat or dog, and any incident where the bird was caught in a cage or toy, even if it appears to have recovered.
Call ahead. Say that you have a bird with a suspected fracture so that the practice can tell you whether they see birds and, if not, direct you immediately to somewhere that does. Ask what to do on arrival, because many clinics will take the box straight through rather than have a bird wait in a room with dogs.
While travelling, keep the box covered, keep the car warm and quiet, avoid loud music and hard braking, and resist the urge to keep checking. Every look costs the bird something.
