A parrot recovered after an escape or collision: the first 48 hours
Getting an escaped parrot back is not the end of the emergency. A bird that has been outdoors may be hypothermic, starved, internally injured, bitten by a cat, or carrying inhaled fungal spores, and it will hide all of it. This guide covers containment and warming order, the head-to-tail check, what appears only after day one, impact injuries, safe refeeding, and when to go in.

Quick answer
A bird that has been outdoors is not safe simply because it is back in the house.
Getting the bird back is the hard part emotionally. It is not the dangerous part medically.
A parrot that has been loose outside has been cold, unfed and frightened, and may have been struck by a window or a vehicle, grabbed by a cat, or landed on something toxic. Birds conceal all of that. The quiet, fluffed bird sitting calmly on your hand may be hours from collapse.
- Any contact with a cat is an emergency even with no visible wound. Treat it as one.
- Warm the bird before you offer anything to eat or drink. A cold bird cannot empty its crop and food will sit and ferment.
- Weigh the bird as soon as it is contained, and compare with its normal weight.
- Do not let a recovered bird fly around the room to stretch until it has been examined. A cracked keel or a strained wing gets worse.
- Book a veterinary check even if the bird looks fine. Several of the things that kill recovered birds take one to several days to show.

A bird that has been in a cat's mouth needs veterinary antibiotics urgently, whether or not you can find a wound.
Cat saliva carries Pasteurella and other organisms that cause overwhelming infection in birds. The puncture is often a single hole the width of a pin, hidden completely under feathers, and it may not bleed. Birds that look perfectly well after a cat encounter can deteriorate and die within a day or two. The antibiotic has to start before signs appear, which means the appointment cannot wait for symptoms. The same applies to a dog, a rat, a bird of prey, or any wild bird that fought with yours.

Why a recovered bird looks better than it is
Three separate mechanisms combine to hide the problem.
Concealment is instinct, not stoicism.
In a flock, a bird that looks weak attracts the predator and loses its place. Parrots therefore hold a normal posture and perch grip long past the point where a mammal would be visibly unwell. The bird is not brave. It is running its last reserves to look ordinary.
The energy reserve is the flight muscle.
The large muscle mass either side of the keel bone powers flight and doubles as the emergency fuel store. A bird that has not eaten for a day or two burns into it, and the keel becomes sharper. Small species run this reserve down faster than large ones, so a budgerigar or cockatiel is in trouble much sooner than an Amazon.
Injuries are covered by feathers.
Feathers close neatly over punctures, and blood wicks along them and dries invisibly. Bruising in birds shows as green discolouration of the skin after a day or two rather than as a visible mark on the surface.
The first hour, in order
Contain before you assess.
A single covered carrier or a small box with ventilation, lined with a towel and set on the floor of a quiet room. Not the main cage, and not free flight. Movement is the enemy of a cracked bone and a bruised air sac.
Warm before anything else.
A bird that has spent a night outdoors is cold, and everything downstream depends on fixing that first. Warm the room and keep the carrier out of draughts. Warmth should surround the bird gently rather than shine at it, and the bird must always be able to move away from the source. A bird too weak to move away can overheat against a direct heat source without protesting.
Darken and quiet the space.
Low light reduces stress and lowers the metabolic cost of panic. It also stops the bird trying to climb or fly.
Weigh it.

Carrier, towels and supplies laid out before you handle the bird, so the examination is short and calm.
A digital kitchen scale and a perch or towel is enough. Weight is the single most useful number you can hand the vet, because it converts a vague impression into evidence, and because it becomes the yardstick for the next few days.
Only then, offer food and water.
Once the bird is warm and settled, offer its usual food and water in shallow dishes where it can reach them without climbing. Do not syringe fluid into the beak of a bird that is not fully alert. Birds have their airway opening at the base of the tongue, and fluid put into a semi-conscious bird goes straight into the lungs.
The head-to-tail check
Do this once, calmly, with someone else holding if possible, in good light. Stop if the bird is in respiratory distress and go straight to the vet instead.

Hold around the head and shoulders, never around the chest, and keep the examination brief.
Restraint.
Control the head, support the body, and leave the chest completely free to move. Never wrap or squeeze the body. A bird held around the chest cannot inflate its air sacs and suffocates in under a minute.
Head.
Both eyes the same size and shape, pupils reacting equally to light, no blood in the nostrils or ear openings, no bruising visible on the skin around the eyes, beak intact and aligned, no bleeding inside the mouth.
Breathing.
Watch before you touch. Look for tail bobbing with each breath, an open beak at rest, a clicking or wheezing sound, or a stretched-out neck. Any of these is an emergency in its own right.
Wings.
Compare left and right. Extend each gently and let it fold back on its own. One wing that hangs lower, will not fold, or has a bulge or crackle along a bone is a fracture until proved otherwise.
Keel and body.
Run a finger along the breastbone. It should feel like a ridge with muscle rising either side of it. A sharp, prominent keel means significant weight has already been lost. Feel gently for swelling, wetness or crackling under the skin, which can indicate a ruptured air sac.
Under the wings and around the thighs.
Part the feathers under bright light. This is where cat punctures hide. You are looking for a small dark point, a matted patch, or a spot of dried blood.
Legs and feet.
Both feet gripping with equal strength, all toes moving, no swelling, no hanging leg, no missing nails.
Vent and droppings.
Note the colour and consistency of the first droppings, and photograph them. Green staining of the urates suggests the bird has not eaten for some time or that the liver is under strain. Blood is an emergency.
Feathers.
Look for oil, tar, paint, sap or a chemical smell, for broken shafts that are bleeding, and for a fan of feathers snapped off at the same level, which suggests an impact.
What is still coming after day one
This is the part owners are least prepared for.

The practical consequence is that the veterinary check is not a formality on day one and then finished. If the bird develops a change in voice, an increase in breathing effort, or unexplained weight loss over the following weeks, that history of being outdoors is directly relevant and should be mentioned again.
Impact injuries specifically
A bird struck by a vehicle, a window or a wall takes the force through the chest and head.
Head trauma.
Look for a bird that is dazed, sits with the head tilted, circles, cannot right itself, or has unequal pupils. Blood from the nostrils or ear canals after an impact is significant. Keep such a bird dark, quiet, flat and warm, do not offer food or fluid by mouth, and transport immediately. Handling makes intracranial bleeding worse.
Chest and air sac injuries.
Birds have thin-walled air sacs extending through the body and into some bones. A blow can rupture one, producing a bird that swells with air under the skin, crackles when touched, and breathes with effort. This needs veterinary attention, not home management.
Keel and coracoid fractures.
A bird that hits a window at speed frequently fractures the coracoid, a strut in the shoulder that does not show externally. The bird looks intact but cannot fly or lift the wing normally. Cage rest with everything at floor level, and radiographs, are how this is handled.
Internal bleeding.
Pale, dull-coloured skin around the beak and feet, weakness, and rapid breathing without any external wound. Birds do not have much circulating blood volume, and internal loss becomes critical faster than in a mammal.
Refeeding a bird that has not eaten
A bird that has been out for a day or more is running on nothing.
Warm first. Then offer the food it already knows, in the shape it already knows. This is not the moment to introduce pellets to a seed-eater or to try a new vegetable. Familiarity drives intake.
Offer at floor level in shallow dishes. A weak bird will not climb to a bowl.
Millet, favourite seeds and warmed soft food are all reasonable initial offerings even if they are not the ideal long-term diet, because getting energy in is the priority for the first day.
Watch the crop. It should fill after eating and be noticeably emptier a few hours later. A crop that stays full, feels doughy, or gives off a sour smell means the gut is not moving, and that needs veterinary attention rather than more food.
If the bird will not eat at all, do not force-feed it yourself. Crop feeding a weak bird by an untrained hand is a common cause of aspiration and death. That is a veterinary or experienced-keeper procedure.
What the vet will want
What never to do
Do not hold or wrap a bird around the chest. It cannot breathe if the sternum cannot move.
Do not give human medicines, including painkillers, antihistamines or antiseptic creams. Several are directly toxic to birds and greasy products destroy feather function.
Do not put a cold bird straight in front of a heat source it cannot escape, and never use a heat pad directly under a bird too weak to move.
Do not give food or water to a bird that is cold, dazed or semi-conscious.
Do not decide to watch a cat encounter overnight. That decision is the reason many of these birds die.
Do not let the bird fly or climb until it has been checked, however normal it seems.
Do not delay because the bird "seems fine now". Aspergillosis and bite infections both incubate.

When to get help

Back on the stand, eating and breathing easily, is the endpoint. Getting there safely takes the full 48 hours.
Go immediately for any predator contact, any breathing difficulty, any bleeding, any inability to perch or stand, any head signs, or a bird that is cold and unresponsive.
Go the same day for a bird with significant weight loss, a wing held abnormally, contaminated feathers, or blood in the droppings.
Book within a day or two even for a bird that appears entirely normal, and mention the escape explicitly, because it changes what the vet looks for and what they will want to recheck.
Bring the carrier the bird is already in rather than moving it again, bring the weight, and bring photographs of anything you noticed but could not describe.
