Parasites and Preventive Health for Parrots: What Actually Applies
Parrots have no monthly antiparasitic schedule and, in most regions, no routine vaccination. Risk is driven by exposure: new birds, aviaries, soil and wild birds. This covers the parasites that genuinely occur in parrots, why cage mite protectors are dangerous, the hygiene and quarantine that works, and the real calendar of weighing, inspection and annual examination.

Quick answer
Companion parrots do not have a parasite calendar in the way dogs and cats do. There is no monthly spot-on, no routine worming schedule for a bird living indoors, and in most regions no routine vaccination either.
What replaces the calendar is exposure-based thinking. An indoor parrot that never meets another bird has almost no parasite risk. A bird in an outdoor aviary with earth underfoot, wild birds overhead and rodents nearby has a real one. A newly acquired bird of unknown history is the highest risk of all, and quarantine plus veterinary screening is what actually protects the household.
Preventive health in a parrot is mostly observation, weight records and hygiene, not a monthly product.
- Treat on diagnosis, not on a schedule. Antiparasitic drugs are prescribed after a test, not applied by the calendar.
- Never use cage mite protectors, hanging pest strips, or over-the-counter bird mite sprays. Several are directly toxic to birds.
- Never dose ivermectin or any wormer from an internet recipe. Birds are small, doses are species-specific, and errors kill.
- Quarantine every new bird and get it screened before it meets the birds you already have.
- Outdoor aviaries, ground-feeding species and multi-bird collections are where worming programmes genuinely apply, and they are designed by a vet.

Cage mite protectors and hanging pest strips are not safe for birds.
Products sold to hang on or near a cage work by releasing a volatile insecticide into the air the bird breathes continuously. A parrot's respiratory system extracts far more from each breath than a mammal's, which is exactly why airborne toxins affect birds so severely.
The same applies to household insect sprays, foggers, flea products intended for dogs and cats, and any over-the-counter mite spray applied directly to a bird. Remove these from the home and treat diagnosed parasites with a veterinary prescription instead.

Why a dog schedule does not transfer
Dogs and cats get monthly products because they go outside, eat things off the ground, meet other animals, and carry parasites that reinfect continuously and that also affect people.
A parrot in a house does none of that. Its enclosure is cleaned, its food is prepared, it does not walk on soil, and it does not meet other birds. There is no continuous reinfection cycle to interrupt, so there is nothing for a monthly product to prevent.
Applying one anyway is not neutral. Antiparasitic drugs have effects, birds are small, dosing is species-specific, and treating an uninfected bird provides no benefit against those risks.
The exception is not a species difference; it is an exposure difference. Once a bird has access to soil, insects, rodents, wild bird droppings or other birds of unknown status, real parasite risk appears, and then a programme designed by a vet for that setup makes sense.
The parasites that actually matter in parrots
Giardia.
A protozoal parasite of the gut, reported particularly often in cockatiels and budgerigars. It causes loose or bulky droppings, poor weight gain in young birds, weight loss in adults, and in cockatiels a characteristic itching and feather picking over the chest and under the wings.
It is diagnosed on faecal examination, and because shedding is intermittent, several samples collected on different days are more informative than one. Treatment is prescribed. Prevention is water hygiene: fresh water daily, bowls washed with detergent, and bowls positioned where droppings cannot fall into them.
Knemidocoptes, the scaly face and scaly leg mite.
Mainly a budgerigar problem, though it occurs in other species. It burrows into the skin of the cere, beak, eyelids, legs and vent, producing a crusty honeycomb texture. Birds can carry it without signs and break down when stressed or immunosuppressed, which is why it often appears after a move or an illness.
Untreated, it can permanently deform the beak. It is treated with a prescribed acaricide, and every in-contact bird is treated at the same time.
Roundworms and Capillaria.
These matter in birds with access to soil, in aviary collections, and particularly in ground-feeding species. Heavy burdens cause weight loss, poor condition and sometimes obstruction. Diagnosis is by faecal examination, and worming programmes for aviaries are set up with a vet based on what is actually found.
Red mite.
Lives in cracks and joints in the cage and the surrounding furniture, comes out at night to feed, and hides by day. It causes restlessness at night, irritation, and in heavy infestations anaemia. Look with a torch after dark, and check under perch ends and cage seams. Treating the bird alone never works; the environment has to be treated too.
Trichomonas.
Causes plaques in the mouth and crop, and difficulty swallowing, and it is more often seen where birds have contact with pigeons or doves or share water sources with wild birds.
Coccidia and other aviary parasites.
Relevant to collections and outdoor setups, diagnosed on faecal testing, and managed with hygiene and drainage as much as with drugs.
Macrorhabdus ornithogaster.
Not a parasite but frequently the actual explanation when an owner suspects worms. It is a yeast affecting the stomach, seen particularly in budgerigars, cockatiels and finches, and it produces weight loss, vomiting and whole undigested seeds in the droppings. It needs specific diagnosis and treatment.

A weekly weight record catches gut parasites, yeast and most other chronic disease long before the bird looks unwell.

Quarantine length is a decision to make with your vet, because it depends on what is being screened for and on local disease patterns. What is not negotiable is that quarantine means separate air space, separate equipment, and caring for the new bird last.
Hygiene that actually reduces risk
Water bowls are the main route for the parasites that do occur in indoor birds, so position them where droppings cannot land in them and wash them properly with detergent every day.
Keep food off the floor of an aviary, and use feeders rather than scattering, so that birds are not eating from ground that has been defecated on.
Exclude rodents and wild birds from aviaries and food stores. Wild bird droppings falling into an aviary are the main route by which an outdoor bird acquires a parasite it could never have met indoors.
Wash fresh food thoroughly, and be careful about foraged branches and greens, which should come from somewhere you know has not been sprayed and where wild birds have not been roosting.
Wash your hands between birds, and care for a quarantined bird last, with its own bowls, cleaning cloths and utensils.
What never to do
Never hang a mite protector, pest strip or insecticidal block on or near a cage.
Never use a flea or tick product intended for a dog or cat on a bird.
Never spray a bird with an over-the-counter mite spray of unknown composition.
Never dose ivermectin, fenbendazole or any other antiparasitic from an online dosing chart. Some species are unusually sensitive, and the margin in a small bird is unforgiving.
Never treat only the bird for red mite. The population lives in the environment.
Never skip quarantine because the new bird looks healthy. Looking healthy is what birds do.
Never treat repeated feather plucking as a parasite problem without a veterinary work-up.
Never assume last year's diagnosis explains this year's signs. Retest.

When to get help
Contact an avian veterinarian promptly for weight loss, undigested seed in the droppings, persistently abnormal droppings, itching and feather picking, crusts on the cere, beak or legs, or a bird that is restless at night.
Go the same day for a fluffed, quiet bird, for one that has stopped eating, or for any breathing difficulty. Those are not parasite questions, they are emergencies.

The measure of a good preventive routine is a bird whose weight has not moved and whose droppings look the same as last month.
Book a wellness examination annually even for a bird with no signs, and bring the weight record. In parrots, prevention is mostly early detection, and the record is what makes early detection possible.

Clear eyes, a smooth cere and clean legs are the baseline you are comparing against each month.
