Parrot obesity: scoring the keel and losing weight without harming the liver
Obesity in a parrot is felt at the keel, not seen through the feathers, and it must never be corrected by cutting food sharply, because birds mobilise fat to the liver. This guide covers keel scoring, the swellings that are not fat, the four stages, the order the plan has to run in, and why restoring flight matters more than smaller portions.

Amazon parrots are one of the groups in which obesity and its consequences are best documented, and one of the easiest to feed too well.
Obesity in a parrot is not an emergency on the day you notice it, and it must not be treated like one. Birds mobilise fat to the liver when they go into negative energy balance, so a fat bird that is suddenly fed less can develop liver failure faster than it loses weight.
The work is done in a different order: measure first, change what is offered before you change how much, restore flight and foraging, then reduce quantity slowly under weekly weights.
- Buy a kitchen scale that reads in single grams. Without one you are guessing, and a parrot can lose a tenth of its body mass before it looks different.
- Score the keel with your fingers. Feathers hide everything, so obesity is felt rather than seen.
- Never impose a sudden restriction, a fast, or a "diet day" on a bird.
- A wing-clipped bird cannot burn what it eats. Restoring flight does more than cutting portions.
- Some swellings that owners call fat are hernias, tumours, fluid or an egg. Check what you are actually looking at before you diet a bird.

Never starve a parrot thin.
Birds run a high metabolic rate on small energy reserves. When intake drops sharply, fat is mobilised faster than the liver can process it and accumulates inside liver cells. In an already fat bird, which usually has some degree of fatty change to start with, this can tip into liver failure.
The signs are not dramatic at first: a quiet bird, fluffed, sitting low, eating less, then green or yellow staining in the droppings. Any parrot that stops eating for a day is an emergency, and an overweight parrot that stops eating is a greater one.
Weight loss in a bird is a supervised, weighed, gradual process, and the target and pace should come from a vet who has examined it.

Why a fat parrot is a breathless parrot
Birds do not have a diaphragm and they do not have lungs that inflate and deflate like a mammal's. Air is moved by the sternum and ribs swinging outward, driving it through a system of air sacs that extend into the abdomen, around the organs and even into some bones.
Fat deposited in the abdomen occupies the space those air sacs need. The bird then has less capacity in reserve, so it reaches its limit sooner during flight, restraint or a hot day, and it pants where a lean bird would not.
The same fat surrounds and infiltrates the liver, which in birds sits directly against the caudal air sacs. A liver enlarged by fat pushes forward into the same space.
Blood vessels take the third hit. Atherosclerotic disease, in which artery walls thicken and stiffen, is well described in captive parrots and is one reason an apparently healthy middle-aged Amazon or grey can die suddenly. Diet and inactivity drive it, and by the time it matters there are no outward signs at all.
That is why obesity in birds is not a cosmetic problem, and also why it cannot be corrected quickly. The organs that are damaged by carrying the fat are the same organs that are stressed by losing it too fast.
Reading the keel, which is the only measurement that matters
Run a finger down the centre of the bird's chest. The sharp ridge you feel is the keel, the extension of the breastbone that the flight muscles attach to.
In a bird in good condition the keel is palpable as a firm ridge, with well filled muscle rising on either side of it that curves gently away. The ridge is present but not prominent.
In a thin bird the keel stands out like a blade and the muscle either side is concave. In a fat bird the muscle is convex and the keel becomes a shallow groove between two bulges, or cannot be felt at all through the fat.
Feel with the flat of your fingertip rather than pressing hard, and do this on a bird that is calm and restrained comfortably, ideally as part of a routine you already have.
Two things confuse this. First, muscle and fat both fill out the chest, and a strongly flighted bird has genuine pectoral muscle. Second, a fat layer under the skin of the abdomen and inner thighs is often visible as pale cream or yellow tissue through the sparse feathering on the belly of light-coloured species.
Weight alone cannot answer the question either, because a normal weight for one African grey is not normal for another, and species ranges overlap. Weight is what you track over time. The keel is what tells you where the bird sits today.
What is not fat
A distended body is not always a fat body, and dieting a bird with one of these will do nothing except make it worse.

The practical rule: a swelling that appeared over days is not fat. Fat takes months.
Staging: where your bird actually is
Stage one, over-conditioned. Keel palpable but the muscle either side is full and convex. The bird flies but tires sooner than it used to. Nothing else is abnormal. This is where correction is easy and where almost nobody acts.
Stage two, obese. Keel difficult to feel. Fat visible through the skin of the abdomen and thighs. Flight is short and heavy, landings are clumsy, and the bird pants after exertion. There may already be a lipoma.
Stage three, complicated. Exercise intolerance at rest or on handling, tail bobbing with each breath, foot problems from constant weight on hard perches, feather quality falling away, and in females a history of chronic egg laying. Liver disease is likely to be present and detectable on blood tests.
Stage four, decompensated. Breathlessness at rest, a swollen abdomen, weakness, collapse or sudden death. This is a critical patient, not a diet case.
Every stage before the last is reversible. The reversal is slow, and the earlier stages reverse without the bird ever being at risk.
The plan, in the order that works

Weigh the bird, and weigh the food. A parrot eats a small mass of food a day, so a difference of a few grams of seed is a large difference in energy.
First, measure and keep measuring.
Weigh the bird every morning before the first food of the day, on the same scale, and write it down. Morning weights before feeding are comparable to each other. Weights taken at random times are not, because crop contents and droppings move the number.
Weigh what you put in the bowl and what is left, for a week, before changing anything. Most owners discover the bird is eating something quite different from what they thought they were feeding.
Second, change what is offered, not how much.
The first gains come from replacing high energy items with bulkier, lower energy ones at the same volume: vegetables and greens in place of a proportion of the seed, a formulated diet in place of a free choice mix, and the high fat seeds removed from the bowl and kept aside as training rewards.
Conversion has to be gradual and weighed, because parrots will refuse unfamiliar food for long enough to harm themselves. Never remove a familiar food entirely and wait for hunger to win.
Third, move the calories into work.
Nothing that arrives free in a bowl helps a bird that is already sedentary. Put the ration inside foraging devices, wrapped in paper, threaded onto skewers, hidden across several stations, so that eating takes time and movement.
Fourth, only then reduce quantity.
If weight is still not moving after diet quality and foraging are established, a measured reduction can be made, in small steps, with weekly weights and with an agreed floor below which you stop and reassess. This step belongs with your vet, because the bird's target weight and safe pace depend on species, age, and what its liver is already doing.

A bowl of nuts left available is an unlimited energy supply. The same nuts, given one at a time for training or hidden in a foraging toy, become the tool that changes the bird's behaviour.
Flight is the half that gets left out
A parrot's principal form of exercise is flight, and flight is metabolically expensive in a way that climbing around a cage is not.
Wing clipping removes that. A clipped bird cannot generate lift, cannot exercise itself, and typically becomes less active in every other way as well. Owners then attempt to solve the resulting weight problem with food restriction alone, which is the hard way to do it and the risky way.
If the bird is clipped, the flight feathers will regrow at the next moult. Plan for a safe flight space in advance: windows covered, ceiling fans off, other pets excluded, water containers covered, and a bird that has been taught to come back before it is given the freedom of a room.
If flight is genuinely not possible, build activity another way: a wide play stand it must travel around, food stations at opposite ends of the cage, ladders and swinging perches that require effort, targeted step-up and recall sessions, and daily out-of-cage time with something to do.

Where species genuinely differ
Macaws of the larger species, hyacinths in particular, evolved on palm nuts and have a genuinely high fat requirement. Applying a low fat plan designed for an Amazon to a hyacinth macaw is a mistake in the opposite direction.
Amazon parrots, African greys and galahs are the groups most often reported with obesity related vascular disease and fatty lumps, and they are the ones to watch hardest.
Budgerigars and cockatiels show the problem as lipomas and xanthomas, and in females as chronic egg laying, which shares a cause with obesity in the form of an over-rich diet and long day length.
Lories and lorikeets are specialist nectar feeders whose diets are not comparable to any of the above, and a conversion plan built for a seed-eating parrot does not apply to them.
Cockatoos and macaws that live long lives with long-term owners accumulate the problem slowly enough that nobody notices, which is why the annual weight record matters more than any single reading.
The routine that catches problems early
What the vet will ask for
The daily weight record, which is the single most valuable document you can bring.
The species, age, sex and, if known, where the bird came from and what it has been fed for its whole life.
What is actually offered each day, by weight, and what is actually eaten.
Whether the bird flies, whether it is clipped, and how much time it spends out of the cage.
For females, the laying history: how many clutches, how recently, and whether eggs are laid without a mate.
Breathing after mild exertion, which the vet may want to see rather than hear described.
Photographs of any lump over time, and whether it has grown.
Expect blood tests looking at the liver and at fats in the blood, and expect imaging if the abdomen is enlarged, since the answer to that question is not obtainable by touch alone.
What never to do
Do not fast a bird or impose a diet day. Birds do not tolerate fasting the way mammals do.
Do not remove a familiar food abruptly to force acceptance of a better one. Parrots will starve beside a full bowl of something they do not recognise as food.
Do not treat visible abdominal swelling as fat. Fluid, a hernia, a tumour and an egg all live in that space.
Do not give supplements or human weight loss products to a bird.
Do not judge progress by appearance. Feathers conceal the change in both directions.
Do not use a scale that reads in ounces or in ten gram steps. A parrot's meaningful weight changes are smaller than that.
Do not diet a bird that has begun to eat less on its own. Falling intake in an overweight bird is a medical event.

Book an appointment for a bird whose keel cannot be felt, for any new lump, for exercise intolerance, and before starting any quantity restriction so that a target and a floor are agreed in advance.
Get advice sooner rather than later if the bird is a species with a high fat requirement, if it is a chronically laying female, or if it has any existing liver, heart or foot problem, because in those birds the plan is different and getting it wrong costs more.
Bring the weight record. A month of morning weights tells a vet more about what is happening than any description of the bird's appearance.
