Parrot electrocution and cord chewing: the first hour and the injuries that appear later
A parrot's beak strips cable easily and a wet mouth conducts well, which is why cords kill companion parrots. The dangerous part is the timing: birds that survive the first minute often look normal and then develop fluid in the lungs hours later, or lose tongue tissue as burns demarcate over a week. The most important thing to understand is the timing. Birds that survive the initial shock frequently look almost normal, and then deteriorate later from fluid in the lungs, or lose the tip of the tongue over the following week as burned tissue demarcates. Every electrical contact needs an avian vet the same day, regardless of how well the bird seems.
- Cut the power before you touch the bird. Never handle a bird still in contact with a live cable.
- Do not throw water on the bird or the cable.
- Handle as little as possible. Stress alone can kill a bird in shock.
- Go to an avian vet even if the bird appears fine. Delayed lung injury is the reason.
- Watch the mouth for the next two weeks. Burns to the tongue declare themselves slowly.

A bird gripping a live cable is part of an electrical circuit, and a person who grabs it becomes part of the same circuit. Turn the power off at the wall or at the fuse box, or unplug the appliance if you can reach the plug safely without touching the cable or the bird.
If you genuinely cannot cut the power, move the bird away using a dry, non-conducting object such as a wooden broom handle. Never use anything damp or metal, and never use your hands.
Water conducts. Do not throw water on the bird, the cable or the appliance, and be aware that a soaked carpet or a water bowl nearby extends the hazard.

What an electric shock does to a bird
Three separate injuries happen at once, and they run on different clocks.
The burn.
Current passing through tissue generates heat, and the damage concentrates at the contact points. In a parrot that is usually the tongue, the inside of the beak or the commissure at the corner of the mouth, and sometimes a foot. The visible mark immediately afterwards is often small and unimpressive. Over the following days the injured tissue demarcates: it turns pale, then dark, then separates. The final defect is frequently much larger than what you saw on day one, and tongue tips are commonly lost.
The cardiac effect.
Current crossing the chest can disrupt the heart's rhythm. This is what causes immediate death or immediate collapse, and it is decided in the first seconds. A bird that is upright and alert has usually passed this risk.
The lung effect.
This is the one that catches owners out. Electrical injury triggers a massive surge of sympathetic nervous activity, and one consequence is fluid accumulating in the lungs. It does not always happen straight away. A bird can look almost normal for several hours and then develop severe breathing difficulty.
Bird respiratory anatomy makes this worse than it would be in a mammal. Air moves through the avian lung in one direction, driven by a system of air sacs, and there is no diaphragm and no effective cough. Fluid that a dog would clear stays put.
That single fact is why the correct advice after any electrical contact is a same-day veterinary assessment for a bird that seems perfectly well.
The first ten minutes
Power off first.
As above. This is not negotiable and it is not the step to rush past.
Look, do not grab.
A conscious bird that is alert and moving should be allowed to settle. Chasing a bird in shock around a room can be what kills it.
Contain rather than restrain.
Get the bird into its cage or a small dark carrier lined with a towel. If you must pick it up, use a towel and keep the chest free to move. Never wrap the body tightly.
Warm, dark, quiet.
A bird in shock loses heat. A carrier with a towel, in a warm quiet room, with the light low, is the correct holding environment. Do not put the bird against a direct heat source it cannot move away from.
Do not offer food or water by force.
A bird with a burned mouth or in shock can aspirate. Leave water available if the bird is bright and can reach it; do not syringe anything.
Do not apply anything to a burn.
No cream, no ointment, no oil, no antiseptic, no ice. Creams trap heat and contaminate feathers, and many products are toxic to birds.
Note the details now, while you remember them.
The time, the appliance, whether it was mains or a low-voltage cable, whether the bird lost consciousness, whether it fell, whether it had a seizure, and how long the contact lasted. These change the veterinary plan.
Travel with the bird stable and covered.
Small carrier, low perch or a towel on the floor of it, covered to keep it dark, and kept warm in the car. Do not use a large cage with high perches, because a bird that falls in transit adds an injury.

A small covered carrier with a towel on the floor is the correct transport. High perches in a moving car add a second injury.
The two weeks afterwards
The initial appointment is not the end of it. Electrical burns evolve.
Days one to three.
Watch breathing closely. Increased effort, tail bobbing with each breath, open-mouth breathing, a clicking sound, or sitting with the wings held slightly away from the body all mean go back immediately.
Days three to ten.
The mouth changes. Injured tongue tissue turns pale or white, then dark, then firm, then separates. The bird may start eating more slowly, dropping food, favouring softer items, or taking food and then abandoning it.
Weight is the measurement.
Weigh daily on the same gram scale at the same time. A bird with a painful mouth reduces intake before it stops eating, and the weight falls before the behaviour is obvious.
Feeding support is often needed.
A parrot uses its tongue to position food against the beak. Losing part of it changes how, and whether, the bird can eat. Softened food, different presentation, and in some cases assisted feeding under veterinary direction may be required for a period.
Infection risk.
Burned tissue in a mouth full of bacteria is a setup for infection. Bad smell, swelling, discharge, or a bird that becomes dull again after seeming to improve are all reasons to return.
Crop function.
Pain, stress and reduced intake can slow crop emptying. A crop that still feels full many hours after a meal needs veterinary attention.

Look inside the mouth daily for two weeks, briefly and gently. This is where the injury declares itself.
What else looks like an electrocution
A parrot found on the floor near a cable has not necessarily been shocked. Getting this wrong sends the appointment in the wrong direction.
Hypocalcaemic seizure.
African greys in particular are prone to low blood calcium, which causes seizures, collapse and disorientation. The bird may have fallen near a cable coincidentally. Diet history, especially a seed-based diet and no ultraviolet light exposure, is the clue.
Heavy metal toxicity.
Zinc and lead from cage parts, cheap toys, curtain weights, stained glass and old paint. A parrot that chews cables also chews metal. Signs include weakness, seizures, vomiting, and passing unusually coloured droppings.
Collision or night fright.
A window strike or a panic in the dark produces head trauma, a stunned bird and sometimes bleeding.
Inhaled toxin.
Fumes from overheated non-stick cookware, aerosols, self-cleaning ovens and some heaters cause sudden respiratory collapse with no external mark at all.
Poisoning.
Ingested houseplants, alcohol, chocolate, avocado, or a household chemical.
The practical consequence is that the vet needs the whole picture rather than the conclusion. Report exactly what you found and what the room contained, not just that the bird was near a wire.
Proofing a room that a parrot flies in
Unplug what is not in use.
The simplest and most reliable measure. A dead cable is a chewing problem, not an electrical one.
Route cables out of reach, then cover them.
Rigid conduit, trunking or split tubing rated for the job, fixed to the skirting or run behind furniture. Soft spiral wrap is easily removed by a large parrot.
Assume the bird can reach anything it can see.
Parrots climb, walk and fly. Height is not protection.
Treat low-voltage cables as a hazard too.
Phone chargers, USB leads and speaker wires are less likely to electrocute, but the plastic insulation and the fine internal wires are ingestion and injury risks, and the plug ends contain metals.
Look at the whole room at bird height and at floor level.
Cables behind and under furniture, extension leads, lamp flexes, appliance cords at the back of a desk, and the cable running to the bird's own cage lights and heaters.
Supervise flight time in any room with live cables.
Supervision means watching, not being in the room.
Give the chewing somewhere to go.
A parrot needs to destroy things. Untreated soft wood, palm and vine, paper, cardboard, leather offcuts and shreddable foraging toys satisfy the same drive. A bird with nothing to chew will find your wiring.
Check daily.
Look for nicked insulation, tooth marks and exposed copper. A partially chewed cable is a fire risk to the household as well as a hazard to the bird.
What changes by size and species
Small parrots.
Budgerigars, parrotlets, lovebirds and cockatiels have less body mass, and a given current is proportionally far more damaging. They are more likely to die at the moment of contact.
Large parrots.
Macaws, cockatoos and large amazons have the beak force to bite straight through cables that a smaller bird cannot damage, including some that owners assume are protected. Their survival rate at the moment of contact may be better, and their tongue and beak injuries are correspondingly significant because of how much they rely on both.
Young birds.
Explore everything with the beak and have the least judgement. The highest-risk period is the first year in a new home.
Hormonal birds.
A parrot in breeding condition chews far more, seeks out cavities and dark spaces behind furniture where cables run, and takes more risks. Seasonal spikes in cable damage are common.
Cockatoos specifically.
Persistent, methodical and strong. Enclosures, conduit and locks that work for other species frequently do not work for a cockatoo.
What never to do
Do not touch a bird that is in contact with a live cable.
Do not use water on the bird, the cable or the appliance.
Do not wrap or hold a bird tightly around the chest.
Do not apply cream, ointment, oil, butter or ice to a burn.
Do not force food or water into a bird after a shock.
Do not wait overnight because the bird seems fine.
Do not put a shocked bird on a high perch or in a large cage to travel.
Do not rely on bitter spray as your safety measure.

When to get help
Go to an emergency avian vet immediately for a collapsed or unresponsive bird, any difficulty breathing, tail bobbing, open-mouth breathing, seizures, or bleeding.
Go the same day for any electrical contact at all, including one where the bird appears entirely unaffected, and for any visible mark inside the mouth or on a foot.
Return promptly during recovery for breathing changes, a bird that becomes dull again after improving, a bad smell from the mouth, dropping food, a crop that is not emptying, or weight loss over consecutive days.
Bring the chewed cable or a photograph of it, the appliance details, the timeline, your daily weights and your mouth photographs. In electrical injury the history determines how aggressively the bird is monitored, and monitoring is most of the treatment.
