Parrot droppings: urates, urine and the changes that matter
Every parrot dropping is three things at once: faeces, white urates and clear urine. Learning to read them separately is what separates polyuria from diarrhoea, which point at different organs. Normal by species, what urate colour means, the changes that need an avian vet today, and the plain white paper routine that makes any of it visible.

Quick answer
A parrot does not urinate separately from defecating. Every dropping is three things arriving together: a coiled solid faecal portion, a white or cream paste of urates, and a small amount of clear urine. Reading a bird's health from its droppings means reading those three parts separately.
The single most useful distinction an owner can learn is between polyuria and diarrhoea. Polyuria is more clear liquid around a normally formed stool. Diarrhoea is a stool that is no longer formed. Owners report them as the same thing, and they point at different organs.
- Look at the dropping, not the puddle. Formed faeces plus a lot of water is not diarrhoea.
- Urates are the colour indicator. White or cream is normal; yellow, green, red or brown is not.
- Fewer droppings than usual means the bird is eating less, and a bird eating less is an urgent problem.
- Undigested seed passing through whole is always abnormal and always worth investigating.
- No droppings at all for several hours in a bird that is straining is an emergency.

Get to an avian vet immediately if the bird is straining and producing nothing, if droppings are black and tarry, if there is frank blood, or if the bird is fluffed and quiet with bright lime-green urates.
Straining with no output can mean egg binding or a cloacal obstruction, and both kill quickly. Black tarry droppings mean digested blood from higher in the gut. Green urates with a sick bird raise the possibility of liver involvement or chlamydiosis, which is also transmissible to people.

Why a bird's dropping has three parts
Mammals dissolve their nitrogenous waste in water as urea and flush it out. Birds cannot afford that. Water is heavy, flight is expensive, and an egg is a sealed box in which a developing embryo has to store its own waste without poisoning itself.
The evolutionary answer was uric acid. It is nearly insoluble, so it can be concentrated into a paste and excreted with very little water, and it can be stockpiled safely inside an egg.
That single chemical decision produces the anatomy an owner sees every day. There is no bladder, because there is nothing much to store. The ureters run to the cloaca and empty into it. Faeces from the intestine arrive at the same chamber. Everything leaves together.
So a bird's dropping is a combined report from two separate systems, and they can fail independently. The white part tells you about the kidneys, the liver and the bloodstream. The coiled part tells you about the gut and the diet. The puddle tells you about water balance.
This is why the polyuria and diarrhoea distinction matters so much. A bird with kidney disease and a bird with an intestinal infection produce messes that look similar on a cage floor and are nothing alike on white paper.
What normal looks like, and why it differs by species
Normal is defined by your bird, on its diet, on a surface you can actually see.
The faecal portion. A tidy coil or comma. Colour follows food. A pellet-fed parrot typically produces mid to dark brown. A seed-fed bird produces darker, greener droppings. Heavy fresh food shifts it towards green. Beetroot, berries and strongly coloured vegetables can produce alarming reds and purples that are entirely dietary, which is worth remembering before a panic.
The urate portion. White to cream, opaque, sitting on or beside the faeces. It should have no strong colour of its own.
The urine. A small clear halo. How much is normal depends enormously on diet.
Species variation that changes the answer.
Lorikeets and lories are nectar feeders with a specialised brush tongue and a liquid diet. Their droppings are naturally loose and squirted, and judging a lorikeet against a cockatoo's standard produces false alarms constantly.
Eclectus parrots and other birds fed large quantities of fruit and vegetables produce visibly wetter droppings than a bird on mostly pellets, without being ill.
Small birds such as budgerigars and cockatiels produce many small droppings through the day, so the change you will notice first is in number rather than in appearance.
Larger parrots hold overnight, so the first dropping of the morning is normally the biggest and often the wettest of the day. Do not use it as your baseline.
Hens in lay produce large, malodorous droppings, and a hen that has been sitting will produce a very large one when she leaves the nest.
Reading each part
Polyuria: more clear water, formed stool.
Work through the ordinary causes before the frightening ones. A big increase in fruit or vegetables, a move to a wetter formulated diet, hot weather, and a recent stress or car journey all produce transient polyuria. So does a bird that has just been given a bath or has been drinking heavily from a bowl.
If none of those apply, or it persists, the differential list includes kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, egg laying, heavy metal poisoning from ingested zinc or lead, systemic infection including chlamydiosis, and some medications, notably courses of antibiotics or corticosteroids.
Heavy metal exposure deserves a specific mention because the sources are so ordinary: galvanised mesh and clips, cheap costume jewellery, curtain weights, stained-glass solder, old paint, and some zips and toy fittings. A bird that has recently had access to a new cage, a new toy or an old window frame, and is now polyuric, should be assessed for it.
Diarrhoea: the stool loses its shape.
Genuine diarrhoea is less common in parrots than owners think, and when present it usually reflects an intestinal problem: bacterial or fungal overgrowth, parasites, a sudden diet change, spoiled or mouldy food, or a systemic disease with gut involvement.
Collect a sample. Fresh droppings on clean white paper, taken to the appointment in a sealed container, are far more useful than a description.
Urate colour.
This is the part most owners never look at and the part that carries the most specific information.
Yellow or green urates suggest bile pigment appearing where it should not, which points at the liver or at destruction of red blood cells. Bright lime-green droppings in a sick, fluffed bird are a classic presentation of chlamydiosis and warrant urgent attention, partly because that organism also infects people.
Red or pink urates suggest blood, which may come from the kidneys or from the reproductive tract in a hen.
Brown urates can appear with lead poisoning or severe illness.
Any urate colour change in a bird that is otherwise well still deserves a phone call, because the bird's ability to look well while being ill is the whole problem with the species.
Volume and count.
The number of droppings in a day is a proxy for how much the bird is eating. Fewer, smaller, darker droppings means reduced intake. A bird's metabolic rate is high and its reserves are small, so a parrot that stops eating deteriorates far faster than a dog or cat would.
A bird that produces almost no droppings overnight and looks fluffed in the morning is not sleeping in. That is an emergency.
Undigested food.
Whole seeds or recognisable food particles passing through mean the food is not being processed. Causes include proventricular dilatation disease, which is associated with avian bornavirus and typically produces weight loss alongside undigested seed, and infection with the yeast-like organism sometimes called avian gastric yeast or megabacteria, which is common in budgerigars. Neither is diagnosed by looking at the dropping alone, but the dropping is what sends you.
Blood.
Fresh red blood mixed with or coating a dropping can come from the cloaca, from a papilloma, from straining, or from a hen after laying. Black, tarry, sticky droppings mean blood that has been digested on its way through, which places the bleeding higher up and makes it more urgent.
Changes that mean act today
No droppings, with straining. Egg binding, a cloacal mass, or an obstruction. Do not wait for the morning.
Fluffed, quiet, sitting low on the perch, with any dropping change. In a prey species that conceals illness until it cannot, visible sickness plus a dropping change means the illness is already established.
Lime-green urates. Urgent, and mention to the practice that you are concerned about chlamydiosis so they can take appropriate precautions.
A sudden drop in dropping count. Weigh the bird. A weight loss confirms reduced intake and turns a worry into a measurement.
Blood in any form.
Polyuria persisting more than a day or two with no dietary explanation.
The routine that catches problems early
The whole method is one sheet of plain white paper.
Newsprint hides colour under grey and ink. Corn cob, wood shavings, sand and grit absorb the urine and destroy exactly the information you need, and loose particulate substrates carry their own risks of ingestion and fungal growth. A grate above the tray keeps the bird out of the droppings but also keeps you from seeing them properly, so many owners lift it for a spot check.
The reason for dampening is specific. Dried droppings crumble into dust, and that dust can carry the organism responsible for chlamydiosis as well as fungal spores. Wetting first keeps it out of the air. Household air quality around birds is worth reading about separately, but this one habit does most of the work.
What never to do
Do not treat a dropping change with an over-the-counter avian remedy from a pet shop. Products sold for "bowel health" or as general tonics do not address kidney disease, heavy metal poisoning or a bacterial infection, and they delay the diagnosis while the bird gets thinner.
Do not withhold food from a bird with loose droppings. Fasting is a reasonable first step in some mammals; in a small bird with a fast metabolism it is dangerous.
Do not use grit routinely in the hope of firming things up. Parrots hull their seed and do not need grit, and impaction from overeating it is a recognised problem.
Do not dismiss polyuria because the bird seems bright. Kidney and liver disease both produce a bird that looks well for a long time.
Do not clean the whole cage immediately before an appointment. The vet wants to see the droppings, and an owner who has scrubbed the tray has thrown away the evidence.
Do not dry-sweep or vacuum dried droppings without dampening them first.

When to get help
Contact an avian or exotics vet the same day for:
- Straining with nothing produced
- Black tarry droppings, or any frank blood
- Yellow, green, red or brown urates
- A clear reduction in the number of droppings
- Whole undigested seed in the droppings
- Any dropping change in a bird that is also fluffed, quiet, or sitting on the cage floor

Bring to the appointment: a photograph of the abnormal dropping on white paper, a fresh sample on clean paper in a sealed container, your weight record, a full and honest description of the diet including treats and anything shared from your plate, details of any new cage, toy, mesh or metal object the bird has had access to, whether the bird is a hen and whether she has laid recently, and whether any new bird has joined the household.
Expect the vet to weigh the bird, examine the vent, and consider blood tests, a faecal examination, radiographs looking for metal density in the gut, and specific testing for chlamydiosis. The dropping is the signal; those tests are the answer.
