The word parrot covers birds whose wild diets have nothing in common, and mismatches produce specific diseases rather than vague poor condition. "Parrot food" is a shop category, not a nutritional one. A lorikeet, an eclectus and a macaw need three different diets.

The word parrot covers birds whose wild diets have almost nothing in common. Lorikeets drink nectar. Eclectus eat fruit and leaves through an unusually long gut. Hyacinth macaws live on hard, oily palm nuts. Cockatiels eat the seeds of arid grassland plants.

A single bag labelled for parrots cannot serve all of them, and the mismatches produce specific, predictable diseases rather than vague poor condition.

Feeding types, and why they matter

Wild parrots fall into broad feeding categories, and captive disease follows from ignoring them.

Nectarivores.
Lorikeets and lories. Their tongue ends in a brush of papillae for lapping nectar and gathering pollen, and their gut is short and simple because liquid food needs little processing. Feeding them like a granivorous parrot causes serious disease.

Frugivores and folivores.
Eclectus most notably. Adapted to a high-volume, high-fibre, low-fat diet of fruit, flowers, leaf buds and seeds, processed through a long gut.

Granivores.
Cockatiels, budgerigars and many Australian parakeets. Seed eaters in the wild, but eating a broad range of grass and herb seeds at different stages of ripeness, alongside green plant material, not a bowl of sunflower and millet.

Generalists with a high-fat niche.
Large macaws. Palm nuts and other hard oily fruits are a genuine part of the natural diet, and hyacinth macaws are specialists on them.

Generalists with a low-fat requirement.
Amazons, galahs and many cockatoos. These species do badly on rich food and are the ones most likely to present with obesity, fatty tumours and arterial disease.

The base diet for most parrots

For everything except lorikeets, the workable structure is a formulated pellet as the foundation, fresh vegetables daily, fruit in smaller quantity, and seed and nuts as a limited component rather than the bulk.

Why pellets.
Every mouthful has the same composition, so the bird cannot select the fatty items and leave the rest. That single property fixes most of what is wrong with seed mixes.

Why vegetables still matter.
Dark leafy greens, orange-fleshed vegetables and a variety of fresh produce provide vitamin A precursors, calcium and fibre, and they give the bird something to work at. They also provide the variety that keeps a bird willing to accept new foods, which matters enormously later in life.

Why fruit is limited.
Fruit is largely sugar and water. It is useful for variety and as a reward, and it is not a base.

Where seed fits.
As a small, deliberate component or as a training reward. Sprouted seed is a useful middle ground for birds transitioning from a seed diet.

Nuts.
High value to the bird, high fat. For most species they are training currency. For large macaws they are part of the diet, in a measured allowance.

Species by species

Lorikeets and lories.
Feed a commercial nectar diet formulated for lorikeets, wet or dry according to the product, plus fresh fruit, edible flowers and some vegetables. Do not feed a standard parrot seed mix or a standard parrot pellet.

Two specific risks. First, these species are prone to iron storage disease, so foods with a high iron content should be limited, and large amounts of vitamin C alongside iron-rich food increase iron absorption. Second, sugary liquid diets left standing ferment and grow yeast quickly, so bowls need changing at least twice daily and washing thoroughly, and thrush-like infections of the crop and mouth are common where hygiene slips.

Expect liquid droppings. That is normal for the species and a husbandry consideration rather than a health problem.

Eclectus.
Feed a large volume of fresh vegetables and fruit with a modest pellet component, keeping fat low. This species has a longer gut than other parrots and does well on bulky, fibrous food.

Eclectus are the species most associated with adverse reactions to over-supplementation. Owners report episodes described as toe tapping and wing flipping, and these are widely linked to heavily fortified diets and added vitamin and mineral supplements. The practical approach is whole foods first, minimal added supplementation, and any change discussed with an avian vet rather than layered on.

Large macaws.
A pellet base with a measured nut allowance. Hyacinth macaws in particular have a natural diet built on palm nuts and need a higher fat proportion than other parrots. Green-winged and scarlet macaws also tolerate more fat than an amazon.

The mistake in the other direction is feeding a caged, largely sedentary macaw the fat load of a wild flying one. Fat allowance should track activity and weight, not species alone.

African greys.
Pellet base, calcium-containing greens, and attention to vitamin D3, either dietary or through appropriate ultraviolet lighting, since D3 is required to use dietary calcium.

Greys are the species most reported with hypocalcaemic seizures, and the classic history is a seed-fed bird with no ultraviolet exposure. Any grey that has a seizure needs blood calcium checked as a priority.

Amazons, galahs and cockatoos.
Keep fat low. These species reliably become overweight, develop fatty tumours and are prone to arterial disease. Nuts and seed should be training rewards only. Weigh weekly, because obesity in a feathered animal is easy to miss by eye.

Cockatiels and budgerigars.
Pellet base with a small seed allowance and a wide vegetable range. Cockatiels are prone to chronic egg laying, which drains calcium, so calcium provision and light management both matter in hens. Budgerigars develop fatty tumours and fatty liver on all-seed diets, and iodine deficiency causing thyroid enlargement has historically been a problem in seed-fed budgies.

Conures and small parakeets.
Pellet base, vegetables, limited seed, and a strong emphasis on foraging, because these are busy birds that do poorly with food simply sitting in a bowl.

Weigh the bird, not just the food. Weekly weights in grams are the only reliable way to know whether a diet is working.

Foods that harm, regardless of species

Avocado, in all parts, is toxic to birds.

Chocolate and cocoa, caffeine in any form, and alcohol.

Salty foods and heavily processed human snacks.

Onion and garlic in more than trace amounts.

Fruit pits and stones, and apple seeds.

Anything mouldy, including damp seed and stale nectar.

Xylitol and other sugar substitutes in human products.

Non-stick cookware is not a food, but it belongs on this list: overheated non-stick coatings release fumes that kill birds quickly, and the kitchen is where most parrot poisonings happen.

Grit, supplements and the myths

Grit.
Psittacine parrots remove the husk from a seed with the beak and swallow only the kernel, so they have no need for grit to grind food. Offering it can lead to overconsumption and impaction, particularly in a bird that is unwell and eating grit compulsively. This differs from pigeons and some softbills, which swallow seed whole, and the pet shop advice is often carried across incorrectly.

Cuttlebone and mineral blocks.
A reasonable calcium source and something to work the beak on, but not a substitute for a balanced diet and not a reliable way to correct a deficiency.

Vitamin supplements in water.
Poor practice for several reasons. The dose received is unknown, vitamins degrade in water and light, the water becomes a bacterial culture medium, and many birds drink less when the taste changes.

Blanket supplementation.
A bird on a good formulated diet is already receiving added vitamins and minerals. Adding more on top is where over-supplementation problems begin, and eclectus are the species where this shows most clearly.

Presentation matters as much as content

Wild parrots feed heavily at dawn and again in the late afternoon, and they spend the intervening hours searching, manipulating and processing.

A full bowl available all day removes that work and produces a bird that eats too much of the easiest item and has nothing to do with the rest of its day. Much of what is diagnosed as behavioural in captive parrots begins here.

Practical changes that work: offer the main meal in the morning and a second in the late afternoon, put part of the day's food into foraging toys, wrap food in paper or hide it in cardboard, and skewer vegetables so they take effort. Offer new foods next to familiar ones, at the time of day the bird is hungriest, and expect repeated exposures before a parrot accepts something unfamiliar.

What never to do

Do not feed a lorikeet a standard parrot seed or pellet mix.

Do not layer vitamin and mineral supplements onto a formulated diet without veterinary advice, particularly in eclectus.

Do not offer grit to a psittacine parrot.

Do not put vitamins or medication in the drinking water unless a vet has directed it.

Do not free-feed nuts and seed to amazons, galahs, cockatoos or budgerigars.

Do not convert a seed-dependent bird abruptly. Sudden conversion causes birds to starve rather than eat.

Do not judge intake by whether the bowl is empty. Birds throw and shell food.

Do not treat a bird that has refused food for a day as a diet problem. That is a medical emergency.

My bird only eats seed and refuses everything else. How do I change that?
Slowly and with weights recorded. Sudden removal of seed causes birds to starve rather than switch. The approaches that work are offering the new food at the hungriest time of day, mixing gradually, eating in front of the bird, using sprouted seed as an intermediate step, and accepting many repeated exposures. Weigh daily during a conversion and stop and take advice if the weight falls.
Is a pellet diet alone enough?
A good formulated pellet is a sound base but a poor whole diet on its own. Fresh vegetables add variety, moisture, fibre and behavioural value, and they keep the bird willing to try new things, which matters if it ever needs a prescription diet or medication in food. Pellets should be the foundation, not the entirety.
How much nut can I give a macaw?
It depends on the species, the individual and how much it moves. Large macaws, and hyacinth macaws in particular, need a higher fat proportion than other parrots, but a sedentary cage-kept macaw needs far less than a wild one. Set the amount with an avian vet against the bird's weight and body condition, and recheck it as the bird ages.
My parrot has not eaten anything today. Should I change its food?
No. A parrot refusing food for a day is a medical emergency, not a preference. Birds have a high metabolic rate and small reserves, and appetite loss is one of the earliest signs of serious illness in a species that hides everything else. See an avian vet the same day and bring the weight.

See an avian vet the same day for any bird that has stopped eating, is fluffed and quiet, has laboured breathing, has had a seizure, or is losing weight.

Book an appointment to plan a diet conversion, particularly for an adult bird that has eaten seed for years, for any eclectus showing toe tapping or wing flipping, for an African grey on a seed diet, and for any bird that is overweight.

Bring the weight record, the actual pellet packaging, a list of what is offered and what is eaten, and details of any supplement. In parrot nutrition the gap between what is offered and what is consumed is where most of the problem lives, and only the owner can describe it.
