Birds do not get the gastric torsion that dogs get, and there is no avian equivalent of canine bloat. What owners are usually seeing when a parrot looks swollen and unwell is a crop that has stopped emptying.

The crop is a storage pouch at the base of the neck, not in the abdomen. When it stalls, the contents ferment, the wall stretches and loses tone, and yeast or bacteria overgrow. It is a genuine emergency, and it is almost always a symptom of something else rather than a disease of its own.

  • Find the crop first. It sits at the base of the neck, over the front of the chest, not below the keel.
  • A crop that is still full first thing in the morning has not emptied overnight and needs a vet.
  • Never massage the crop and never tip a bird head-down to empty it. Aspiration kills quickly.

Where the crop is and what it does

The crop is not a stomach. It is a thin-walled, expandable section of the oesophagus that sits at the base of the neck, in front of the chest, at the point where the neck meets the body.

Its job is storage and softening. A parrot fills the crop quickly, which in the wild means less time exposed while feeding, and then passes the contents gradually into the proventriculus, the glandular stomach, and then the ventriculus, the muscular gizzard where the real grinding happens.

This layout explains several things owners notice.

A full crop is visible and normal. After a meal, a bulge at the base of the neck that flattens over the next few hours is exactly what should happen.

Crop emptying is not driven by the crop alone. It depends on body temperature, hydration, and on everything downstream working. A blocked or dilated proventriculus backs up into the crop.

The crop is the only part of the digestive tract an owner can assess directly. You can see it and gently feel it, which makes it the single most useful thing to check in a bird that seems off.

What a normal crop feels like

Feel with a flat, light touch through the feathers at the base of the neck, with the bird settled and preferably restrained by someone experienced.

Empty. Nothing obvious. The area feels like the rest of the neck.

Recently fed and normal. Soft, full, slightly warm, with a texture like a beanbag. It reduces steadily over the following hours.

Stalled and fermenting. Doughy, or full of fluid that moves, sometimes with palpable gas. Often warm to the touch. The bird may have wet or matted feathers over it.

Impacted. Firm and does not change over many hours. Often with a hard, discrete feel rather than a soft mass.

The single most useful observation is the morning check. A parrot that has not eaten overnight should have an empty crop when you uncover the cage. A crop that is still full has not moved for many hours, and that is your answer.

Regurgitation is not vomiting

These look identical in a video clip and mean completely different things.

Regurgitation is a deliberate social behaviour. A hormonally driven parrot bobs its head rhythmically, pins its eyes, and brings up neat, intact food which it offers to a mate, a mirror, a favourite toy or a favourite person. The bird is bright, the feathers are clean, and the weight is stable. It is normal behaviour, though it does tell you the bird is in reproductive condition.

Vomiting is involuntary. The bird shakes its head, flicking material sideways onto its head feathers, the cage bars and the surrounding surfaces. The material is often slimy, discoloured or foul smelling. The bird is usually fluffed, quiet, sitting low, and losing weight.

The reliable discriminators are where the material ends up and how the bird looks. Food placed carefully into a food bowl or a mirror by a bright bird is courtship. Material flicked onto the head and the walls by a subdued bird is vomiting, and vomiting in a parrot needs to be seen.

Causes, and the tell for each

The pattern worth internalising: crop stasis in an adult parrot is almost never a primary crop problem. It is the visible end of something systemic, and treating only the crop treats only the symptom.

Chicks: the specific failure modes

Hand-reared chicks are where most crop emergencies happen, and almost all of them are technique or environment.

Brooder temperature. A chick below its correct temperature cannot move its crop. This is the first thing to check, with a thermometer, before assuming infection.

Formula temperature. Too cold and the crop stalls. Too hot and the crop wall is burned. Microwaved formula develops hot spots that a stir does not always remove, and a burn does not look like anything on the day it happens. Days later a scab forms and then opens as a hole through the skin, with formula leaking out. That needs surgery.

Formula consistency and hygiene. Too thick slows emptying. Equipment that is not properly cleaned between feeds seeds the crop with bacteria and yeast.

Feeding on top of a full crop. Adding a feed to a crop that has not emptied is how a mild slow-down becomes a stretched, atonic crop overnight. If the crop is not empty, the answer is to stop and find out why, not to keep to the schedule.

Bedding ingestion. Chicks pick at substrate. Fibrous bedding in the crop impacts and does not pass.

Bloat below the keel is a different problem

If the swelling you are worried about is below the breastbone rather than at the base of the neck, you are looking at the coelom, which is the avian equivalent of the abdominal cavity, and the list of causes is different.

Fluid accumulation, an egg, a reproductive tract problem, an enlarged liver, a tumour, a hernia and simple obesity all present as a distended lower body. In a bird this compresses the air sacs, so breathing effort increases, and it is why a bird with coelomic distension often sits with its tail bobbing.

Locate the swelling before you act, because the urgency and the causes are different. Both need a vet, but a hen straining with a distended lower body is an egg binding emergency and cannot wait.

Changes that mean act today

Go the same day for a crop that is still full after a night, a sour smell from the beak, vomiting rather than courtship regurgitation, undigested food in the droppings, or a fluffed bird sitting low with its tail bobbing.

Go immediately for gurgling, fluid at the nostrils, or open-mouth breathing after any regurgitation or crop handling, because that is aspiration.

Go immediately for a chick with a crop that has not emptied, particularly if the chick is also cool, quiet or not begging.

Expect a crop swab examined under the microscope for yeast and bacteria, and often a crop wash. Radiographs are important, because they show metal fragments in the gizzard and reveal a dilated proventriculus.

Blood testing may include lead and zinc levels if there is any possibility of metal exposure, and a general panel to look for the systemic disease behind the stasis.

Treatment is usually fluid therapy, warmth, controlled emptying of the crop under anaesthetic if it is severely distended, and then treatment aimed at the underlying cause, such as antifungals, antibiotics, chelation for heavy metal, or motility support.

What never to do

Do not massage the crop. It is the single most common piece of bad advice on this topic and it causes aspiration and crop tears.

Do not tip the bird forward or hold it upside down to drain the crop.

Do not feed a bird whose crop is not emptying. Adding food to a stalled crop makes everything worse.

Do not give apple cider vinegar, probiotics from a shelf, or any home antifungal in place of a diagnosis. Yeast, bacteria, metal and a motility disease need completely different treatments and look identical from the outside.

Do not warm the bird with a heat pad it can sit directly on, or with anything unregulated. Gentle ambient warmth in a covered carrier is what you want, not a hot surface.

Do not assume a bird that is eating is fine. Proventricular disease causes weight loss in birds with a good appetite, because the food passes through undigested.

Do not use galvanised mesh, unbranded chains, cheap quick links or bell clappers of unknown metal in a parrot cage. Zinc toxicity is preventable and common.

My parrot regurgitates for me every evening. Should I be worried?
Not medically, if the bird is bright, eating, holding weight and the food is brought up neatly and offered rather than flicked around. What it does tell you is that the bird is in reproductive condition and treating you as a mate, which over time raises the risk of hormonal behaviour problems and, in hens, reproductive disease. Reducing day length, removing nest-like spaces and restricting petting to the head are the usual responses.
How do I know if the crop is emptying properly?
Check at the same time each morning before feeding. An overnight fast should leave the crop empty. If you want a finer measure, feel the crop just after a meal and again a few hours later; it should be noticeably smaller. What matters is the change over time rather than any single assessment.
Is a slow crop always an infection?
No, and treating it as one is a common mistake. Chilling, dehydration, a foreign body, heavy metal, an obstruction further down and general illness all stall a crop with no infection involved. Yeast and bacteria often appear as a secondary overgrowth in the stalled contents, which is why the crop swab result alone does not tell you why it stopped.
My chick's crop emptied fine yesterday and is slow today. Can I wait until morning?
No. In a chick, slow crop emptying moves quickly to a stretched, non-functional crop, and chicks have very little reserve. Stop feeding, check and correct the brooder temperature, and contact an avian vet the same day.

When to get help

Contact an avian vet the same day for a crop that has not emptied overnight, a sour smell, vomiting, undigested food in the droppings, or a fluffed and quiet bird.

Go immediately after any suspected aspiration, for a chick with a stalled crop, for a hen straining with a distended lower body, or for any bird breathing with effort.

While you arrange it, keep the bird warm, quiet and in a small covered carrier, offer water but not food, and take a sample of the droppings with you.
