Parrot burns and scalds: the first hour and what never to apply
Feathers hide burns and hold heat against the skin, and a small burn is a large area on a small bird. How to cool without causing hypothermia, why nothing should ever be applied, the exceptions for oil and electrical injury, and why burns look worse days later.

Burns in parrots are far more serious than they look, for two reasons. Feathers hide the damage and hold heat against the skin, and a burn covering a small area on a bird is a large proportion of a very small body.
The single most damaging thing owners do is apply something. Creams, butter, oil, aloe and antiseptic sprays all make burns worse in birds, because anything greasy destroys the feather structure and gets swallowed during preening.
- Cool the burned area with cool, not iced, water. Keep the rest of the bird warm and dry.
- Put nothing on the burn. No cream, no oil, no ointment, no spray, no powder.
- Part the feathers and look. Hot liquid soaks through and burns skin that appears untouched.
- Never wrap a bandage around a bird's chest. Birds breathe by moving the sternum, and a chest wrap suffocates them.
- Burns declare their true depth over the following days, so an injury that looks minor today can look far worse by the end of the week.

Birds hide injury, so a parrot with serious burns may still perch, step up and take a treat. Meanwhile it is losing fluid through damaged skin, it is in pain that it cannot show, and burns that involve the feet, the face or a large area of the body are frequently fatal without veterinary treatment. If steam or fumes were involved, or if the bird's voice has changed, the airway may be injured and that is immediately life threatening.

Why burns hit birds harder
Feathers are the problem, not the protection.
A feather coat is excellent insulation, which means that when hot liquid gets into it, the heat stays. The feathers hold the liquid against the skin and prevent it evaporating, so the burn continues after the accident is over.
It also means the injury is invisible. Owners routinely report that the bird was splashed but looked fine, and the extent only becomes apparent days later when feathers fall out and the skin beneath is damaged.
Whenever hot liquid has been involved, part the feathers over the whole affected area and look at the skin directly.
Body size changes the maths.
A burn the size of a coin is trivial on a person and can involve a large fraction of the body surface of a small parrot. Damaged skin loses fluid, and a bird has very little fluid reserve. Shock develops faster than owners expect.
Featherless areas take the worst of it.
The feet, legs, cere, eyelids and the skin around the beak have no feather cover. Foot burns are the most common presentation, because a bird that lands on a hot hob or the rim of a pan takes the whole injury through its feet, and a bird that cannot perch comfortably has a long, difficult recovery.
The respiratory system is exceptionally vulnerable.
Birds move air through a system of air sacs and rigid lungs that extracts oxygen far more efficiently than mammal lungs. That efficiency works against them when the air is hot or contaminated. Steam, smoke and fumes cause damage disproportionate to the exposure, and the effects can develop over hours rather than immediately.
Birds conceal injury.
A prey species that shows weakness is a target. A parrot with significant burns may sit upright, step up, and behave almost normally. Never grade the severity by how the bird is acting.
The first ten minutes

Cool water and clean gauze. Everything else in a first aid kit stays in the box for a burn.
Stop the source. Turn off the hob, unplug the appliance, cut the power before touching a bird that has bitten a cable.
Restrain safely and briefly. Towel the bird if you must, but never wrap or squeeze the chest. Birds have no diaphragm and breathe by moving the sternum, so pressure on the breast prevents them breathing at all. Support the bird with the towel around the neck and shoulders, leaving the chest free.
Cool the burned area. Use cool running water or repeated cool wet compresses on the burned area only. Aim for several minutes rather than seconds, because cooling continues to limit the depth of the injury after the heat source has gone.
Protect the rest of the bird from cooling. This is the balance that makes bird burns different from human ones. A small bird cooled all over becomes hypothermic quickly, and hypothermia will kill it faster than the burn. Cool the injured area, keep the rest dry, and keep the ambient temperature warm.
Do not use ice or iced water. It causes further tissue damage and accelerates hypothermia.
Put nothing on the burn. No butter, cooking oil, petroleum jelly, aloe, nappy cream, antiseptic cream, spray, powder or herbal preparation. Greasy products destroy the feather structure, trap heat in the wound, prevent the vet assessing the depth, and are swallowed when the bird preens.
Leave adhered material alone. Do not peel away anything stuck to the skin, do not pull out damaged feathers, and do not open blisters.
Offer water, do not force it. Put a shallow dish where the bird can reach it. Never syringe fluid into the mouth of a stressed bird, because aspiration is a real risk.
Transport low and warm. A small carrier with a towel base and no high perch, so the bird cannot fall. Keep it warm, dark and quiet on the way, and call the practice before you set off so they are ready.
The exceptions to the cooling rule
Hot oil and fat. Blot the excess with absorbent paper or cloth, pressing gently rather than wiping, which grinds the oil deeper into the feathers. Do not attempt to wash the bird at home. Degreasing a bird is a veterinary procedure because it requires warmth, correct detergent, complete rinsing and controlled drying, and a half-done job leaves a bird that cannot thermoregulate.
Chemical burns. Flush copiously with running water for a prolonged period, take the container with you, and do not try to neutralise an acid with an alkali or the reverse. That reaction generates heat and adds a thermal burn to a chemical one.
Electrical injury. Turn off the power first. The visible injury is usually at the corners of the beak and on the tongue, and it can look small. The danger is what happens next: electrical injury can cause fluid to accumulate in the lungs several hours later, and can disturb heart rhythm. Every electrocuted bird needs veterinary assessment and a period of monitoring even if it appears normal.
Steam and fume exposure. Get the bird into fresh air immediately and go. Do not wait for breathing to change, because by the time it does the damage is established.
Crop burns in hand-fed chicks
This is a specific and preventable injury that owners of baby birds meet.
Formula that is too hot burns the wall of the crop from the inside. The chick may show little at the time. Over the following days to weeks the burned tissue dies and separates, and a hole opens through the crop and the overlying skin.
The sign is food appearing on the outside of the neck, or a wet patch of skin over the crop after a feed. Once that happens the chick is losing part of every feed and needs surgical repair, which is usually delayed until the damaged tissue has fully declared itself.
Prevention is a thermometer. Judging formula temperature by feel is exactly how this happens, and microwave heating produces hot spots even when the average temperature seems correct.
What burns look like as they develop

Dressings and bandages for birds are a veterinary job. A home bandage on a bird usually causes a second problem.
Superficial. Reddened, warm skin, feather loss over the area, and obvious discomfort. These heal with appropriate care.
Partial thickness. The skin looks moist, discoloured or dull, and the area is painful. Feathers pull out easily. These need veterinary wound management and often weeks of care.
Full thickness. The skin looks white, leathery, dark or charred, and it may not be painful at all because the nerve endings have been destroyed. Painlessness is a bad sign, not a reassuring one.
Delayed demarcation is the point owners most need to understand. A burn does not reach its final appearance immediately. Over the following days the damaged tissue declares itself, and an injury that looked like reddening on day one can be visibly dead tissue by day five. This is normal progression, not a failure of treatment, and it is a reason for follow-up appointments rather than a reason to panic.
What the vet will do, and what to bring
Expect pain relief first, because burns are among the most painful injuries and a bird in pain will not eat. Then fluids, wound cleaning, antibiotics if indicated, and a dressing plan.
Foot burns often need repeated bandage changes and a modified perch, and recovery is measured in weeks.
Bring, or be ready to describe: what caused the burn and how hot it was, how long ago, what you applied if anything, whether the bird inhaled steam or fumes, the species and approximate weight, whether it has eaten or drunk since, whether the voice has changed, and whether it has passed droppings.

Can I use a burn cream made for humans if I only use a little?

When to get help
Go now, for every burn. There is no burn in a parrot that is safely managed at home.
Go immediately and call ahead for steam or fume exposure, a change in voice, open-mouth breathing, tail bobbing, any burn to the face or eyes, burns to both feet, hot oil, or a bird that has become quiet and fluffed.
Return promptly if a wound that was healing starts to smell, discharge, or spread, if the bird stops eating, or if food appears on the skin of the neck in a hand-fed chick.

Recovery from a foot burn is measured in weeks of dressings and modified perches, and it is achievable with early treatment.
