Boarding a parrot: disease risk, diet continuity and the handover pack

Boarding a parrot goes wrong in three ways: disease picked up from shared airspace, household fumes in a home that was never bird-proofed, and a bird that quietly stops eating. This guide covers the questions that actually screen a facility, the weight baseline and food continuity that prevent the third, the written handover pack, and why a returning bird should be quarantined.

Quick answer

The bird's own food, pre-portioned, travels with it. A parrot that refuses an unfamiliar pellet under stress is the commonest reason a boarded bird loses weight.

The three things that actually go wrong when a parrot is boarded are infectious disease picked up from birds of unknown status, a household toxin in a home that was never bird-proofed, and a bird that quietly stops eating and is not weighed until it is too late.

None of those are solved by choosing a nice-looking facility. They are solved by asking about airspace and quarantine, by sending the exact food the bird already eats, and by insisting that somebody puts the bird on a scale every day.

  • Ask how the airspace is arranged, not how big the cages are. Shared air is the disease risk.
  • Send the bird's own food, pre-portioned, and do not change the diet before or during boarding.
  • Insist on a daily weight, taken on the same scale, and ask for the numbers.
  • A wellness exam before boarding catches the subclinical illness that boarding stress would otherwise unmask.
  • Treat a returning bird as exposed, and keep it separate from any birds at home while you watch it.

The single most common way a parrot dies at a friend's house is fumes from overheated non-stick cookware.

Birds have a flow-through respiratory system with air sacs, which extracts gases far more efficiently than a mammal lung. Polytetrafluoroethylene fumes from a pan left on a hot hob, a self-cleaning oven cycle, or a new appliance with a coated element can kill a parrot in minutes, with no warning and often before anyone notices the smell.

Why this is different from boarding a dog

Parrots hide illness, and boarding is exactly when they get ill.

Concealing weakness is a survival behaviour in a prey species that lives in a flock. A parrot will sit upright and bright while an infection or a period of not eating is well advanced, and will only look unwell when compensation fails. In a familiar home an attentive owner notices small changes. In a boarding facility, with an unfamiliar bird, nobody has the baseline. Weighing is the substitute for that baseline, which is why it is the one thing worth being firm about.

Their respiratory system is unusually exposed.

Air moves through a parrot's lungs in one direction, driven by air sacs that occupy much of the body cavity, so a bird extracts oxygen from air far more thoroughly than a mammal does. The same efficiency applies to anything else in the air. Cooking fumes, aerosols, scented products, smoke and cleaning chemicals reach the bloodstream at concentrations that would be trivial to a dog in the same room.

Several of their infectious diseases travel in dust.

Feather dust and dried droppings become airborne every time a bird flaps. That is the transmission route for psittacosis, and dust is also how circovirus spreads. A facility with individual cages in one large room is a single shared airspace, whatever the cages look like.

Food refusal escalates quickly.

Small parrots have little reserve. A cockatiel or a conure that eats nothing for a day is a genuine problem, and a bird that will not touch an unfamiliar food is common rather than unusual.

The diseases that make shared airspace matter

Psittacosis, caused by Chlamydia psittaci.

Shed intermittently, often by birds that appear perfectly well, and spread by inhalation of dried droppings and feather dust. It is transmissible to people, which makes it a household issue as well as a bird one. A bird that has been in shared airspace with an unknown carrier can bring it home.

Exceptionally stable outside the host and not reliably destroyed by routine cleaning. Young birds are most susceptible, and infection can be silent for a long time before feather and beak changes appear.

Avian bornavirus and proventricular dilatation disease.

Shed intermittently, with a long and variable interval before disease appears, so a carrier at a facility is invisible.

Polyomavirus.

Primarily a disease of young birds, capable of causing sudden death, and a specific reason not to board an unweaned or recently weaned bird in a mixed setting.

Aspergillosis.

Not passed bird to bird, but a facility with damp substrate, poor ventilation or stored seed can be full of spores, and a stressed bird is precisely the bird whose immune system lets them establish.

The practical conclusion is not that boarding is unsafe. It is that the questions worth asking are about air, arrivals and screening, and almost nobody asks them.

The questions that actually screen a facility

Ask these on the phone, before you visit.

How is the air arranged? Separate rooms with separate ventilation is meaningfully safer than one bird room. If it is one room, ask how far apart birds are and how the room is ventilated.

What do you require from new arrivals? A facility that asks for a recent avian veterinary examination, and ideally screening for psittacosis, is a facility that is thinking about this. One that takes any bird on the day is not.

Where is the kitchen, and what is your policy on non-stick cookware, aerosols, scented candles and plug-in air fresheners? The answer tells you a great deal about how experienced they are.

Who is on site overnight, and what is the plan for a power cut or a heatwave? Ask specifically what happens to temperature and to the light cycle.

Which avian vet do you use, and will you take a bird there without reaching me first? Get the answer in writing along with a spending limit.

Do birds come out of their cages, and if so, alone or together? Mixed out-time is how small birds lose toes and upper beaks to larger ones. A single unsupervised second is enough. The correct answer is that birds come out individually.

Are there cats or dogs on the premises, and can they access the bird room? Cat saliva carries bacteria that are rapidly fatal to birds, so any cat contact at all, even a scratch that barely breaks skin, is an emergency requiring immediate antibiotics rather than a wait-and-see.

How are cages cleaned between birds, and with what?

What to prepare, and when

Well ahead: carrier training.

If the only time the carrier appears is when something bad is about to happen, the journey starts the stay badly. Leave the carrier out as furniture, feed in it, and let the bird choose to go in.

Well ahead: a weight baseline.

Weigh on the same scale at the same time of day for several weeks and write the numbers down. Hand the boarder the range, not a single figure, and if you can, send the same scale so the readings are comparable.

Well ahead: a wellness examination.

An avian vet check before a stay does two jobs. It finds the subclinical problem that boarding stress would otherwise convert into a crisis, and it produces the recent health record that a good facility will ask for anyway.

Do not do these in the weeks before boarding.

No diet conversion. No wing trim. No new cage. No introduction of a second bird. Each of these is a stressor on its own, and stacking them onto a boarding stay is how a bird ends up plucking.

Portion the food.

Small labelled bags, one per day, of exactly what the bird eats, plus the fresh food it is used to and instructions on preparing it. This removes both the guesswork and the temptation to substitute.

Pick two or three familiar objects.

A favourite perch, a chewed toy, the usual cage cover. Familiar smell and texture help. Sending an entire new toy collection does not, because a neophobic parrot will simply avoid them.

The handover pack

If the bird is on medication, demonstrate the technique in person and leave a video of yourself doing it. A written dose without a demonstration is how a course gets half given.

Written, not verbal. Somebody tired at nine in the evening should be able to find the answer without calling you.

The daily routine. Light and dark hours, when the cover goes on, feeding times, when fresh food is removed, out-of-cage times.

Exact quantities. How much of what, and what the bird actually eats rather than what is offered.

Normal for this bird. What the droppings look like, the weight range, how much it talks, whether it sleeps on one foot, what its normal chatter sounds like.

Handling rules. Who it steps up for, what it bites over, whether it can be towelled, what frightens it.

Medication. Drug, dose, how it is given, at what times, with a video of you doing it and the vet's written instructions attached.

Emergency authorisation. The avian vet's name, address and phone number, written consent to treat, a spending limit, and a named backup decision-maker who can be reached if you are in another time zone.

Identification. Ring number, microchip number if fitted, and photographs from several angles including any distinguishing marks. If the bird escapes, this is what recovers it.

Paperwork. Depending on the species and where you live, there may be registration, licensing or CITES-related documentation attached to the bird. Requirements vary substantially between countries and sometimes between states or provinces, so check what applies to your species and take copies with the bird rather than assuming none apply.

The first week back

Weigh daily for the first week and compare with your pre-boarding range. A bird that lost weight while away needs a vet appointment even if it looks well, because parrots recover appetite slowly and the loss may still be continuing.

Look at the droppings on white paper before you clean the cage. Changes in the volume of urine, the colour of the urates or the consistency of the faeces are all worth photographing.

Check the feathers for chewing or barbering that was not there before. Boarding-related feather damage usually starts in the areas the bird can reach easily, and catching it early matters because the behaviour becomes self-sustaining.

Quarantine the returning bird if you have others. This is the step almost nobody takes. A bird that has shared airspace with birds of unknown status has been exposed, and incubation periods for the important parrot diseases are measured in weeks. Keep it in a separate room, ideally with separate air, handle your resident birds first and the returner last, and wash and change clothing in between. Watch weight and droppings throughout.

Expect a few days of behavioural adjustment. Increased contact calling, clinginess, or a sulky refusal to step up are normal after a separation and usually resolve. What is not normal is a quiet, fluffed bird sitting low on the perch, and that needs a vet the same day.

What never to do

Do not change the diet in the run-up to boarding, or ask the boarder to continue a conversion. Under stress a parrot will simply not eat the new food.

Do not let the bird go to a home where nobody has been asked about non-stick cookware, self-cleaning ovens, aerosols, scented candles or smoking. This conversation feels awkward and it is the single highest-value thing you will do.

Do not accept a facility that lets multiple birds out together. Beak and toe injuries from a larger bird happen instantly and are permanently disfiguring.

Do not board a bird that is already off its food or losing weight. Boarding stress will not improve it, and the facility has no baseline against which to judge.

Do not skip the emergency authorisation. Without written permission and a spending limit, a facility may hesitate at exactly the moment hesitation costs the most.

Do not assume a bird that behaves normally on the day it comes home is in the clear. The diseases worth worrying about have incubation periods, which is exactly why the quarantine period on return exists.

Is a sitter in my home always safer than a facility?
For disease exposure, yes, because there is no shared airspace. For everything else it depends on the sitter. A bird alone for twenty-three hours a day with a visitor who does not know what a fluffed bird looks like is not obviously safer than an experienced facility. Weight the choice by the bird: a young, recently acquired or immunosuppressed bird belongs at home, while a robust adult with an inexperienced sitter may do better with people who handle parrots daily.
How long before travelling should the vet check happen?
Far enough ahead that there is time to act on the findings, which in practice means weeks rather than days. A check done two days before you fly finds problems at the moment you can do least about them, and many facilities specify their own window for how recent the examination must be.
My parrot plucked while it was boarded. Will it stop now it is home?
Sometimes, but do not wait to find out. Feather destructive behaviour becomes self-reinforcing quickly, and there is almost always a medical component worth excluding, particularly skin disease and pain. Book an avian appointment rather than assuming it was purely situational.
Should I visit the bird during a long stay?
Ask the facility. Some birds settle better with no interruption, and a visit that ends in the owner leaving again can reset the adjustment. For a very long stay, or a bird known to stop eating when stressed, a visit that is mainly about checking on it in person can be worth the disruption.

When to get help

Call the boarder's avian vet, or your own, the same day if you are told any of these:

  • The bird has not eaten for a day
  • The bird is sitting fluffed and low on the perch, or on the cage floor
  • Breathing effort, tail bobbing with each breath, or an open beak at rest
  • Any contact with a cat, however minor the injury looks
  • A fall, a fright with a heavy landing, or bleeding

After the bird comes home, book an appointment if:

  • The weight is below its pre-boarding range and not recovering within a few days
  • The droppings have changed and stayed changed
  • New feather chewing has appeared
  • The bird is quieter than usual for more than a few days

Bring these to the appointment: the dates away, the name of the facility, whether other birds were present and how the rooms were arranged, the daily weights, what the bird actually ate, any medication given, and photographs of the droppings.

A vet who knows the bird shared airspace with unknown birds will test differently from one who thinks it stayed at home, so say it explicitly.
