Parrot attacked by a cat, snake or wild animal: the first response

Quick answer
A bird that has been touched by a cat is an emergency even when you cannot find a mark on it.
If a cat has had a parrot in its mouth or under its claws, the bird needs veterinary antibiotics today, not tomorrow, and not only if you find a wound. Cat saliva and claws carry bacteria that birds handle extremely badly, and the pattern is a bird that looks unhurt for a day and then dies of septicaemia.
The same urgency applies to any predator contact. Feathers hide punctures almost perfectly, birds conceal illness as a survival strategy, and their high metabolic rate means shock and infection move fast. The absence of visible injury is not evidence of safety.

Cat contact is the emergency inside the emergency.
Cat saliva and claws carry Pasteurella and related organisms that cause overwhelming septicaemia in birds, often within a day or two. The puncture made by a canine tooth through feathered skin seals immediately and is invisible without plucking the area. Birds that have been carried in a cat's mouth and released frequently look bright, perch, and even eat, and then die two days later. Every bird that has been in contact with a cat needs systemic antibiotics started as soon as possible, whether or not a wound can be found.

Why a small wound is a large problem in a bird
Infection.
Birds are far more susceptible to the bacteria carried by mammalian predators than mammals are to each other's. Pasteurella multocida, a normal inhabitant of cat mouths and often present on their claws, produces rapid septicaemia in birds. The infection is systemic before it is visible, and by the time a bird looks unwell the window in which treatment works well has usually closed.
That mechanism explains the advice that owners find hardest to accept: treat first, investigate second. A course of appropriate antibiotics started within hours changes outcomes dramatically, and waiting to see whether the bird is really hurt does not.
The air sac system.
Birds do not have simple lungs. Air flows through rigid lungs and into a set of air sacs that extend through the body cavity and into some bones. A puncture over the trunk can open one of these sacs, allowing air to escape into the tissues under the skin. The bird develops a puffy, crackling area that inflates further with each breath, and its breathing efficiency falls.
No diaphragm.
A bird ventilates by swinging the sternum and ribs outwards. There is no diaphragm to help. Anything that holds the chest wall still, including a firm hand, a towel wrapped around the body, or the coils of a constricting snake, prevents breathing entirely rather than merely making it harder.
Metabolic rate and blood loss.
Birds run hot and fast. Shock, blood loss and hypothermia all progress more quickly than in a mammal of similar size, and a small volume of blood is a large proportion of a small bird's total.
Prey species behaviour.
Concealing weakness keeps a wild bird from being singled out. A parrot will sit upright, hold its feathers tight, and behave normally in front of you while seriously injured. Judge the situation by what happened, not by how the bird is presenting.
What to look for, in order
Breathing. Watch the bird from a distance before touching it. Look for an open beak at rest, the tail pumping with each breath, a stretched neck, clicking or wheezing, or an obvious effort. Any of these means go immediately with minimum handling.
Posture and alertness. A bird sitting low, fluffed, with eyes half closed, or unable to stay on a perch, is in trouble.
Bleeding. Look at the wing tips, the tail base and the feet first. Broken blood feathers, which are growing feathers with an active blood supply, bleed persistently and are common after any panic.
Wet or clumped feathers. Saliva marks where a mouth has been, and is often the only clue to where the punctures are.
Wing carriage and weight bearing. A dropped wing, a bird refusing to grip with one foot, or a leg held oddly.
Skin texture. Run a finger very gently over the body. A puffy area that crackles is air under the skin.
Colour inside the beak. The mucous membranes should be pink and moist. Pale or bluish tissue is a circulatory or oxygenation emergency.

Support the head without pressing on the chest. If the bird is fighting hard or breathing poorly, stop and travel instead.
The first ten minutes
1. Secure the predator and the room before you approach the bird.
Shut the cat away, close doors and windows, and make sure the bird cannot escape while you handle it. Chasing a frightened injured bird around a room adds shock and heat load.
2. Do not restrain more than you must.
If the bird is bright and mobile, catching it may cost more than it gains. If you must hold it, use a light towel over the wings and hold across the shoulders, never wrapped tightly around the body.
3. Control obvious bleeding with direct pressure.
Clean gauze or a clean cloth, pressed firmly for a couple of minutes without lifting to check. For a broken blood feather, apply pressure at the base of the feather against the skin. Styptic powder and cornflour are for a bleeding nail or feather shaft only, never packed into an open soft-tissue wound.
4. Warm, dark and quiet.
A shocked bird loses heat quickly. Warm the container rather than the bird directly, keep any heat source outside the box so the bird cannot lie against it, and cover the box to reduce visual stimulation. Overheating is its own emergency, so warmth means comfortable, not hot.
5. Set up the transport container properly.
A solid, ventilated carrier or a cardboard box with air holes, lined with a folded towel. Remove perches, because a weak bird falling from a perch adds injuries. No water bowl to tip or drown in. No loose material that can be inhaled.
6. Do not offer food or water by mouth.
A collapsed or dyspnoeic bird will aspirate it.
7. Phone ahead and go.
Tell them the species, what attacked it, and when. A practice that knows a cat-injured bird is coming can have antibiotics ready.

Keep this set assembled: solid carrier, folded towel, gauze, a light towel for handling, and the number of an avian vet including out of hours.
Predator by predator
Cats.
Infection is the main threat, injury second. Even a claw graze inoculates bacteria. Cats also cause crush injuries to the chest and back with little external sign. Every cat contact goes to a vet the same day.
Dogs.
Crushing rather than puncturing. Expect internal injury, fractures and air sac damage under intact skin. A dog that "just picked it up" can cause fatal internal trauma.
Rats.
Almost always at night, almost always at the feet and legs of a roosting bird, often through the cage or aviary wire. Bites become deeply infected and toes are frequently lost. Rats also contaminate food and water. If you find an unexplained foot injury in the morning, look for rat evidence before you conclude the bird injured itself.
Snakes.
Two separate problems. Constricting species kill by preventing the chest wall from moving, so a bird recovered alive from coils may have severe respiratory compromise and internal injury with no wounds. Venomous species in some regions cause envenomation, and any bird from a region with venomous snakes that is found collapsed near a snake needs urgent veterinary care. Snakes also enter aviaries through gaps far smaller than they look, and a snake in the aviary tends to return.
Birds of prey and corvids.
Strike injuries to the head and back, or toes taken through the mesh from a bird perched on the wire. Corvids will also work at mesh persistently. Both mean the aviary needs a double layer, not a repair.
Wild climbing mammals.
In some regions raccoons, possums, quolls and similar animals reach through wire with dexterous paws. The injuries are to whatever the bird had against the mesh: feet, wings, tail.
Insects.
Ant swarms can overwhelm nestlings, sick birds and any bird that cannot move away. In regions with aggressive stinging ants this is a genuine aviary risk, particularly at ground level.
What happens over the next few days
Hour zero. The bird often looks remarkably normal. Adrenaline and prey-species behaviour both work against you here.
Six to forty-eight hours. If infection is taking hold, the bird becomes quiet, sits fluffed, stops vocalising, eats less, and the droppings change. Green or lime-coloured urates suggest the liver is involved and are a bad sign. Breathing may become faster.
Two to four days. Untreated septicaemia leads to collapse. This is the point at which most owners of an apparently uninjured bird realise something was wrong.
Later. Even treated birds can develop abscesses at puncture sites, infection in the bone of a bitten toe, damage to feather follicles that produces permanently abnormal feathers, and behavioural fallout including night frights and feather damaging behaviour after a severe scare.
Keep a written log through this period: droppings, food eaten, weight if you can, and any change in breathing or posture. It matters as much as the initial visit.
Is it actually an attack?
Not every morning injury has a predator behind it. Two look-alikes are common.
Night fright. Cockatiels are especially prone. A noise or a shadow triggers thrashing in the dark, which breaks blood feathers, splits skin over the keel, and damages wing tips. The clue is feathers and blood inside the cage with no external evidence and no missing bird.
Entrapment. A toe caught in a toy chain, a leg band snagged, or a beak trapped in a gap. This produces a swollen or damaged toe or leg with no other injury.
Both still need veterinary attention, and both change what you fix afterwards: a night light and a redesigned cage rather than a new predator barrier.
Prevention that actually works
What never to do
Never wait to see whether the bird is really hurt after cat contact.
Never wrap a bird's body in a towel or hold it around the chest. Restrain across the shoulders and head, and leave the sternum free to move.
Never apply oily ointments, creams, petroleum jelly or oil-based antiseptics. They wreck the feather structure that keeps the bird warm and dry, and some are toxic when preened off.
Never use hydrogen peroxide, alcohol, or strong disinfectants on a wound. They damage tissue and delay healing.
Never pull a broken blood feather out on impulse. Apply pressure and let a vet decide, because a badly removed feather damages the follicle permanently.
Never give a bird human or leftover animal antibiotics. Dose and drug choice in birds are specific and getting them wrong wastes the only window that matters.
Never put an injured bird back on a perch to recover. Housing goes flat, padded and low until a vet says otherwise.
Never assume the predator will not come back. Fix the enclosure before the next night.

Recovery looks like this: perching easily, breathing quietly with the beak closed, eating, and back to normal vocalising.
What the vet will want
Say what the predator was, because it changes the antibiotic choice and the level of suspicion for internal injury. Say when it happened, to the nearest possible time.
Bring the bird's species, age and weight, whether you saw the bird in the animal's mouth or only nearby, whether any part of the bird was wet, and what you have already done.
Report the droppings since the event, whether the bird has eaten or drunk, and whether it has vocalised normally.
If the encounter happened in an aviary, photograph the enclosure and the point of entry. It tells the vet what kind of injury to look for and it tells you what to fix.

When to get help
Go immediately, phoning on the way, for any contact with a cat or dog, any bleeding you cannot stop with two minutes of pressure, any change in breathing, air under the skin, a bird that cannot stand or perch, pale membranes inside the beak, or a bird found in or near a snake.
Go the same day for a rat bite, a damaged toe or foot, a dropped wing, an unwillingness to bear weight, or feathers wet with saliva even in a bird that seems well.
Go within a day or two for a bird that becomes quiet, fluffed, or off its food after any predator event, or whose droppings change colour, particularly to green or lime.
While you travel, keep the box dark, warm and level, keep the car quiet, and resist the urge to keep checking. Every look costs the bird energy it needs.
