Why the myth spreads
The idea travels because it is written for dogs and then copied across species by templates and content mills.
Dogs form attachment bonds with people, and separation distress in dogs is a genuine, well described welfare problem with a real training protocol behind it.
None of that transfers. A fish's brain and social life are organised around shoal mates, territory, food and predator avoidance. There is no mechanism by which your departure for the office registers as loss.
The second reason the myth spreads is that fish do react visibly to people. Many will rush to the front of the tank when someone walks past.
That is classical association, the same reason a fish learns to surface when a lid opens. It is learning, not attachment, and it says nothing about how the fish feels when nobody is home.
What fish actually need company for
Species differ, and this is where real welfare advice sits.
Shoaling species need numbers.
Tetras, rasboras, danios, corydoras and many barbs are built to live in groups. Alone or in twos and threes they show the exact signs owners call anxiety: hiding, faded colour, refusing food, and darting.

Territorial species need space and sightline breaks.

A predictable light cycle and a stable temperature do more for a fish while you are away than any amount of interaction.
What never to do
Do not leave a holiday feeding block in a small tank without testing it first. Many dissolve unevenly and foul the water.
Do not ask a helper to feed daily by eye. Pre-portion the food into small containers, one per feed, so there is nothing to judge.
Do not add a mirror, a floating toy, or a tank mate as company. Mirrors trigger repeated aggressive displays in bettas and other territorial species, which is a stressor rather than enrichment.
Do not interpret a fish coming to the glass as needing you. Feeding it every time it does so leads to overfeeding.

- A fish has refused food for more than a couple of days

- Water tests are normal but the behaviour continues to worsen
Bring your test numbers, the tank volume and how long it has been running, the full stocking list, and the date anything was last added. When several fish are affected together, the cause is nearly always the water or a recent addition, not the animals themselves.
