Lizard burns: heat mats, heat rocks and the first 24 hours
A lizard does not reliably move off a surface that is burning it, because its avoidance response is tuned to radiant heat from above rather than contact heat on the belly. This guide explains why burns look mild for days and only reveal their depth at the next shed, separates a burn from scale rot, retained shed and fungal disease, sets out the first hour including why cold water and creams do harm, and explains why a burned lizard still needs full warmth to survive the infection that follows.

Quick answer
Most lizard burns come from equipment inside the enclosure, not from the enclosure being too hot overall.
A lizard does not reliably move off a surface that is burning it. Reptiles judge temperature by whole-body warmth and by the heat arriving from above, so a belly resting on an overheating mat, or a foot on a heat rock, can cook while the animal stays put and looks comfortable.
Burns also look far milder than they are for the first few days. Reptile skin is thick and slow to react, and the true depth is often only visible weeks later when the dead tissue sloughs at the next shed.
- Unplug the heat source first, before you touch the lizard.
- Cool with room-temperature water, never cold water and never ice.
- Put nothing on the wound: no cream, no oil, no aloe, no honey, no human burn gel.
- The lizard still needs correct warmth. A cold reptile cannot fight the infection that follows a burn.
- See a reptile vet within 24 hours, sooner for a large area or a lizard that is dull.

Heat rocks and unguarded bulbs inside an enclosure cause the burns that kill lizards.
A heat rock has a small surface, an element inside it, uneven hot spots and usually no thermostat. A bulb or ceramic emitter mounted inside the enclosure is a surface a climbing lizard will grip, and it will hold on long enough to destroy the skin of its feet and belly.
Every heat source needs a thermostat and a physical guard the lizard cannot reach through. There is no exception for a mat sold as low wattage or self-limiting.

Why a lizard does not move off a burning surface
In the wild, heat comes from the sun and from rock that the sun has warmed. A lizard leaves a warm rock when its own core temperature rises far enough, and the rock cools once the animal shades it. Both parts of that loop are missing in a vivarium with an electric mat under the glass.
The avoidance response is driven mainly by overall body temperature and by radiant heat received across the back, which is where basking behaviour evolved. Contact heat on the ventral surface is a much weaker signal. A cool lizard that has just settled on an overheating mat is receiving exactly the input it is looking for, and it stays.
Two more factors make it worse. A cold reptile is slow, so even if it does decide to move, it moves slowly. And a lizard settled in a hide has usually chosen that spot for security, so it will tolerate a great deal before giving up cover.
The result is a characteristic injury: sharply bounded, on the surface that faced the heat source, and deeper than it looks. Skin thick enough to be waterproof is also thick enough to conduct heat into the tissue below before the surface shows much damage.
The final piece is why burns kill. The scaled skin is the main barrier between the lizard and the bacteria that live in every enclosure, and once it is breached those organisms enter tissue with a poor blood supply. Infection at a burn site is the usual cause of death, not the heat injury.
What a burn looks like, stage by stage
Hours.
Often almost nothing. The area may look slightly pale, yellowed, faintly wrinkled, or shinier and smoother than the surrounding scales, as though it has been glazed. Some lizards show no behavioural change at all. Owners very commonly do not notice a burn on the day it happens.
Days one to seven.
The margin becomes clear. The area darkens, dries and separates visibly from healthy skin. Some lizards develop fluid-filled swelling under the scales. The lizard may go off food, spend more time in one place, or sit with the affected area lifted off the substrate.
Week two onward.
A dry, dark, leathery crust forms over the site. This is dead tissue, not a healing scab, and it can hide a much larger cavity beneath it. Discharge, a smell, or reddened swollen skin around the edge means infection has taken hold.
At the next shed.
This is when owners find out how bad it was. Healthy skin lifts and comes away, and the dead area either sheds in a sheet leaving raw tissue beneath, or fails to shed at all and stays stuck as a hard patch. Burns commonly need several shed cycles to resolve, and a full-thickness burn leaves permanent scale loss and scarring.
The systemic stage.
A lizard with an infected burn goes quiet, stops eating, stops moving to the warm end, and may sit with its eyes closed. A large burn also loses fluid across the damaged surface, and dehydration compounds everything. By this point the problem is septicaemia, and the outlook is much worse than it was in week one.
What else looks like a burn
Scale rot, or ventral dermatitis.
Also on the belly, which is why it gets confused. The separators are the history and the pattern: scale rot follows damp, dirty or unventilated substrate, tends to start as pitted or discoloured individual scales scattered across the ventral surface, spreads irregularly, and often smells. A burn matches the shape and position of a heat source and has a sharp edge.
Retained shed.
Dull, papery, lifting at the edges, and typically encircling a toe, the tail tip or around the eye. It appears on the shed cycle rather than after a heating change, and it constricts rather than destroys. It is still an emergency for a digit, because the tissue beyond it dies.
Normal pre-shed dullness.
Whole-body, symmetrical, milky, and it resolves in days. A burn is local and does not resolve.
Bite and scratch wounds.
From a cagemate or from live feeder insects left in the enclosure overnight, which will chew on a resting lizard. These are irregular, punctate, and often around the toes, eyelids and tail tip rather than in a patch.
Fungal skin disease.
Crusty yellow to brown plaques that spread over weeks, do not correspond to any heat source, and often start at the head or limbs. These need a vet and a different treatment entirely.
Colour change from mood or temperature.
Bearded dragons darken their beard and body, and many lizards darken to absorb heat. This shifts within minutes and is not confined to one patch.
Bruising after a fall or a trapped limb.
Diffuse, often over a bony area, and with a trauma history.
The first hour
Unplug the heat source before anything else.
Not turn down, not moved: disconnected. If it failed once it will fail again, and a lizard put back into the same enclosure gets burned twice.
Cool the area with room-temperature water.
Gently running water, or repeatedly wetted gauze, for several minutes. The purpose is to stop heat continuing to move into deeper tissue.
Never use cold water or ice.
This is the single most damaging piece of transplanted human first aid in reptile keeping. A reptile cannot generate its own heat, so cold immersion drops its core temperature quickly, and a cold lizard cannot mount an immune response, cannot heal and cannot digest. Cold also constricts vessels in tissue that already has a marginal blood supply, which deepens the injury.
Put nothing on it.
No antiseptic cream, no antibiotic ointment from the cupboard, no petroleum jelly, no oil, no butter, no aloe, no honey, no human burn gel or burn dressing. Greasy products trap heat and bacteria and make the wound harder for the vet to assess. Some human antiseptics are directly toxic to reptiles.
Do not open blisters or peel the skin.
Whatever is still covering the wound is doing more good than harm until a vet can clean it properly.
Change the substrate to plain paper towel.
Loose particulate substrate, bark, sand and soil all stick to a burn and inoculate it. Paper towel, changed daily, for as long as the wound is open.
Restore correct warmth from a safe source.
This is the part that feels wrong and matters most. The lizard still needs its normal thermal gradient, from a guarded and thermostatted heat source, because everything about healing and fighting infection in a reptile depends on it reaching its preferred body temperature. A burned lizard kept cool because heat "caused the problem" does much worse.
Offer water.
A burn loses fluid. Provide clean drinking water in the form your species actually uses, whether that is a bowl, droplets on decor, or misting, and tell the vet if the lizard has not drunk.

Clean towel or paper substrate while a burn is open. Anything loose and particulate ends up in the wound.
Which lizards burn, and how
Ground-dwelling nocturnal geckos.
Leopard geckos and similar species rest on the floor and are usually given belly heat, which is the exact combination that produces ventral burns. They are also active when the household is asleep and nobody is watching the mat.
Climbing and arboreal species.
Crested geckos, day geckos and chameleons move toward light and warmth and will sit against a bulb or ceramic emitter. Their burns are on the back, the head and the feet, and a bulb guard is not optional for them.
Basking agamids.
Bearded dragons and similar lizards flatten out under a lamp and stay there. In a shallow vivarium the lamp ends up close enough to burn the back, and a heat rock burns the belly and feet.
Any lizard that cannot move properly.
A lizard with metabolic bone disease, a neurological problem, an injury, or recovering from illness may be physically unable to leave a hot surface. So may a very heavy gravid female that has settled to lay.
Lizards in cool torpor or brumation.
Slow, unresponsive, and least able to react to a surface heating up under them.
Juveniles.
Thinner skin, less mass, and faster heating overall.
Winter.
Burns cluster in cold months, when owners add a second heat source, buy a mat in a hurry, or push a lamp closer because the room is cold. Every new heat source is a new failure point.
The routine that catches it early

Feeding time is the natural moment to check the belly, the feet and the underside of the tail.
Look at the underside. Almost all mat and rock burns are on surfaces the owner never sees during normal husbandry, and the lizard will not tell you. Once a week, lift the lizard and look at the belly, the throat, the feet, the underside of the tail and between the toes.
Feel the surfaces the lizard actually lies on with the back of your hand, every time you do a check, including inside the hide. A mat that has been fine for a year fails without warning when its thermostat does.
Check the thermostat probe every time you clean. A probe that has been knocked out of position, is dangling in the air when it should be on the heated surface, or has been nudged under a hide, is the commonest reason a working thermostat allows a burn.
Watch where the lizard chooses to sit. A lizard that suddenly stops using its favourite basking spot, or that starts holding a foot or the belly off the surface, is telling you something about that surface.
Note the shed. Burned skin sheds badly. A patch that stays stuck while everything else comes away cleanly should be examined rather than picked at.
What never to do
Do not use a heat rock. There is no version of this product that is safe, and the burns it causes are usually on the belly and feet where they take longest to be noticed.
Do not run any heat source without a thermostat, including a mat labelled as low wattage. Thermostats are the difference between a device that maintains a temperature and a device that keeps heating.
Do not apply ice or cold water. A reptile has no way to warm itself again, and hypothermia after a burn kills lizards that would have survived the burn.
Do not keep the lizard cool while it heals. Correct warmth is a treatment, not the cause.
Do not put any cream, ointment, oil or household remedy on the wound before a vet has seen it.
Do not peel, pick or pull at burned skin or at a shed that will not come off a burn site. The tissue underneath is often not intact.
Do not leave the lizard on loose substrate while the wound is open.
Do not assume a lizard that is eating and behaving normally has not been burned. Reptiles hide pain almost completely, and the absence of a reaction means nothing.

When to get help

The aim of the whole process is a lizard back on its own basking spot, from a heat source that cannot burn it.
Contact a reptile-experienced vet within 24 hours of finding any suspected burn, even a small one, and even in a lizard that seems entirely well.
Go the same day if the area is larger than a few scales, is weeping, smells, has reddened swollen skin around it, or if the lizard is dull, is not moving between warm and cool ends, or has stopped eating.
Treat it as an emergency if the lizard is unresponsive, if a large area of skin is involved, or if the burn came with a whole-enclosure overheating event, because in that case the lizard has a heat injury as well as a skin injury.
Bring with you: the wound photographs, the make and type of every heat source, whether each is thermostatted and where the probe sits, surface temperature readings taken with an infrared thermometer at the basking spot, the mat surface and the cool end, the substrate in use, the species and the lizard's weight, and the date the lizard was last certainly normal.
