Lizard suspected poisoning: the first hours and the myths that waste them
Poisoning advice written for dogs does not transfer to a reptile. An ectotherm absorbs and clears toxins at a rate set by its body temperature, so signs are delayed and recovery is slow, and the popular responses of cooling the animal or making it vomit are actively harmful. This guide covers where lizards actually get poisoned, what exposure looks like by system, the one home action that helps, and what the vet will need.

A lizard exposed to something toxic often looks entirely normal for hours, which is not the same as being unaffected
The advice written for dogs and cats does not transfer to a lizard. A reptile is an ectotherm, so how fast it absorbs, distributes and clears a toxin depends on its body temperature. Signs that would appear in a dog within an hour can take a lizard a day or more, and that delay is routinely mistaken for a lucky escape.
The two things that change the outcome are stopping further exposure, which is almost always something you can do at home, and getting the animal to a reptile-experienced vet while it is still stable. Almost everything else people try makes it worse.
- Do not try to make a lizard vomit. Reptiles cannot be safely induced to regurgitate and the attempt causes aspiration.
- Do not cool the lizard to slow the poison down. A cold reptile cannot metabolise, excrete or recover from anything.
- If the exposure was on the skin, washing it off is the single most useful thing you can do.
- Take the packaging, the plant, or a photo of what was eaten with you. Identification changes the treatment.
- A normal-looking lizard hours after exposure is not evidence of safety. Liver and kidney damage shows up late.

Two things kill lizards after a poisoning that the poison alone might not have.
The first is chilling. Owners are told that cooling slows absorption. In a reptile it also shuts down the liver and kidney function that clears the toxin, stops the gut moving, and removes any capacity to recover. Keep the lizard in its correct thermal gradient throughout, including during transport.
The second is anything given by mouth to an animal that is twitching, unsteady or unresponsive. Reptiles have a glottis they close deliberately rather than a mammalian reflex arc, and a neurologically affected lizard aspirates fluid readily. No water, no milk, no charcoal, no home remedy.

Why the reptile clock runs differently
Temperature sets the speed of everything.
An ectotherm's enzyme systems, including the liver enzymes that break down toxins and the kidney function that excretes them, work at a rate determined by body temperature. A lizard held at the top of its preferred range processes a toxin far faster than the same lizard held cool. That cuts both ways: the cool animal shows signs later, and also stays poisoned longer.
This is why cooling is the wrong instinct.
Slowing absorption sounds appealing, but the same slowdown applies to clearance, to gut motility, to the immune response and to healing. A chilled reptile also cannot be safely anaesthetised or treated. Keeping the animal in its normal gradient is part of the treatment, not a risk.
Reptiles do not vomit on request.
Regurgitation in a lizard is a stress response, not a controlled reflex, and it happens with the animal in whatever position it is in. Attempts to induce it cause aspiration, oesophageal damage and severe stress, and there is no safe household agent for it. Gastric emptying, when it is needed, is done under sedation with the airway protected.
The renal portal system changes drug handling.
Blood returning from the hind limbs, tail and lower body passes through the kidneys before it reaches the general circulation. Vets take this into account when choosing where to inject and which drugs to use, and it is one of several reasons a reptile should not be treated with medication calculated for a mammal.
The skin is not a barrier the way owners assume.
Reptile skin absorbs lipid-soluble compounds. A lizard that has walked across a surface treated with insecticide, or that has been sprayed with a product intended for the environment rather than the animal, is being dosed continuously until it is washed. Absorption increases immediately after a shed, when the new skin is thinner.
Breathing is mechanically different.
Reptiles have no diaphragm and move air with the muscles of the body wall. Their respiratory rate is low and lung clearance is slow, which makes airborne irritants and fumes disproportionately damaging. Because enclosures usually sit in living rooms, aerosols, oven cleaners, paint, diffusers and scented candles reach them routinely.
Where lizards actually get poisoned
Insecticides, by a wide margin.
Household fly and ant sprays, residual surface treatments, flea products intended for dogs or cats, and mite treatments used incorrectly. A common and serious version is a "reptile mite" product designed for the enclosure being applied to the animal, or applied to the enclosure without the animal being removed and without the surfaces being dried and aired.
Disinfectants and cleaners.
Phenolic disinfectants, including pine oil and the familiar antiseptic types, are particularly dangerous to reptiles and absorb through the skin. Bleach used in an enclosure and not rinsed to nothing leaves an irritant residue. Ammonia-based cleaners release fumes into a closed enclosure.
Essential oils, diffusers, plug-ins and scented candles.
Lipid-soluble, inhaled and absorbed. The word natural carries no safety information here. This category is one of the most common and most preventable.
Metals.
Zinc from galvanised mesh, from certain coins, and from hardware; lead from curtain weights, fishing weights, solder and some old paint. A swallowed metal object sits in the acid environment of the stomach and dissolves slowly, so the animal is dosed for as long as it remains. These objects show up clearly on a radiograph, which is why imaging is often the first thing a vet does.
Plants, mainly for the herbivores and omnivores.
Bearded dragons, uromastyx, iguanas and other plant eaters are exposed by what comes into the house. Avocado, rhubarb leaves, daffodil and other bulbs, oleander, foxglove and lily of the valley are all serious. Philodendron, dieffenbachia and similar houseplants contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that cause immediate oral pain, drooling and swelling rather than systemic poisoning, and the swelling itself can threaten the airway.
Wild-caught insects.
Insects collected from a garden may carry pesticide residues from your garden or a neighbour's. Fireflies deserve a separate warning: they contain cardiac toxins and eating even one has killed bearded dragons.
Human items during free-roam time.
Dropped medication, nicotine from cigarette ends or vape liquid, cannabis products, and small metal objects. A lizard exploring a floor investigates with its mouth.
Enclosure construction.
Uncured silicone, adhesives, treated or painted timber, and aromatic softwood shavings such as cedar and pine, which release phenolic compounds. New enclosures need to be fully cured and aired before an animal goes in.
Medication intended for another species.
Worming products bought for horses, dogs or livestock and given by guesswork. Some of these are lethal to reptiles at doses that seem trivial. No reptile should be dosed with anything that was not prescribed for it.

What exposure looks like
Signs are grouped by system, and a lizard may show one group or several.
Neurological.
Tremors, twitching, jerky movements, head tilt, star-gazing, circling, loss of the righting reflex when gently tipped, weakness in the hind limbs, and seizures. This group appears with insecticide exposure, with metals and with nicotine.
Oral and upper gastrointestinal.
Drooling, foamy or stringy saliva, pawing or rubbing at the mouth, visible redness or swelling inside the mouth, regurgitation, refusal to eat. Immediate oral signs after chewing a houseplant point to oxalate crystals.
Lower gastrointestinal.
Diarrhoea, straining, absence of droppings, or a change in the colour of the urate portion. Green-tinged urates suggest bile pigment and point to liver involvement.
Respiratory.
Gaping, open-mouth breathing, exaggerated gular pumping, forced exhalation, or audible effort. In a reptile this is always serious.
Skin.
Redness, blistering or discoloured patches at a contact site, and an animal that is rubbing or restless.
Colour and behaviour.
Many lizards darken when stressed or unwell. A bearded dragon that goes dark and flattens, or that sits away from the basking site, is telling you something even before any specific sign appears.
Delayed signs.
Days later: poor appetite, weight loss, lethargy, swollen joints from gout as kidney function fails, or persistent regurgitation. This is why every exposure is followed up rather than closed out when the animal seems to be fine.
The first response, step by step
1. Stop the exposure.
Move the lizard out of the enclosure into a clean, dry, chemical-free container lined with plain paper towel. If the enclosure is the source, the animal does not go back into it.
2. If it is on the skin, wash it off.
This is the one home action that genuinely changes the outcome. Use lukewarm water. For an oily or greasy product, a small amount of plain washing-up liquid helps lift it. Avoid the head, nostrils and eyes; wipe the head gently with a damp cloth instead. Rinse thoroughly, dry the animal properly, and put it straight back into correct warmth. A wet reptile chills fast.
3. If it is in the air, ventilate and move.
Open windows, move the enclosure to a different room, but do not leave the animal in a cold draught while you do it.
4. Keep the heat right.
Maintain the normal thermal gradient. Warm end, cool end, both available. Do not raise it above the species range and do not lower it.
5. Reduce stimulation.
Dim, quiet and covered. A neurologically affected lizard is far more likely to injure itself thrashing than to benefit from being handled.
6. Collect the evidence.
The packaging with the active ingredient list, the plant with leaves and flowers if possible, a photograph of the whole plant in situ, the object that was swallowed if you have another one like it, and any regurgitated material in a sealed bag.
7. Call a reptile-experienced vet immediately.
Not the nearest practice by default. Say the species, the approximate weight, what was involved, how much, when, and by what route. If your region has an animal poison line that covers exotics, call that as well and bring the case number.
8. Transport safely.
A secure, ventilated container that the lizard cannot climb out of, with paper towel and something to hide under. Provide gentle warmth that cannot burn: a wrapped warm pack under half the container, never in direct contact with the animal. Do not use a heat mat unregulated in a small box.

The myths that waste the time you have
"Reptiles are hardy, I will see how it looks tomorrow."
Delayed onset is a property of reptile physiology, not evidence of a mild exposure. Waiting until signs appear means waiting until organ damage is established.
"Cool it down to slow the poison."
This removes the animal's ability to clear the toxin and to recover, and makes veterinary treatment harder. Keep it warm.
"Make it sick."
There is no safe way to induce vomiting in a reptile. Salt, mustard and hydrogen peroxide are all harmful, and the attempt itself causes aspiration.
"Give milk to line the stomach."
Milk does not neutralise anything, reptiles do not digest lactose, and giving fluid to an impaired animal risks aspiration.
"Activated charcoal from the health food shop will absorb it."
Charcoal has a role in veterinary treatment, given by tube at a calculated dose with the airway protected. Given at home by syringe to a lizard it is an aspiration risk and it delays real care. It also does not bind many of the substances involved, including metals and alcohols.
"It only touched it, it did not eat any."
Skin contact is a route of exposure in reptiles, particularly after a shed.
"It says natural, so it is safe."
Essential oils, pine and cedar products and many botanical insecticides are among the more dangerous things in a reptile room.
"It is a reptile mite spray, so it is safe on the reptile."
Read the label. Many are formulated for the enclosure only, and require the animal to be removed and the surfaces dried before it returns.
"My dragon is big, one firefly will not matter."
Size does not protect against the cardiac toxins in fireflies.
What varies between lizards
Plant eaters versus insect eaters.
Bearded dragons, uromastyx and iguanas are exposed through salads and houseplants. Leopard geckos, crested geckos and other insectivores are exposed through feeder insects, particularly wild-caught ones.
Body size.
Exposure is a matter of dose relative to body mass. A quantity a large monitor shrugs off can kill a small gecko.
Recently shed animals.
New skin is thinner and absorbs more.
Species that soak or drink droplets.
Water dragons, some monitors and chameleons take in water in ways that turn a contaminated bowl or a sprayed enclosure into a whole-body exposure.
Arboreal geckos with adhesive toe pads.
Their entire ventral surface is in contact with the surfaces they sit on, so treated glass or wood matters more for them.
Cool or brumating animals.
Onset is slower, the course is longer, and the animal has less reserve. Brumation is not a reason to postpone veterinary care.
Gravid females and juveniles.
Less metabolic reserve and a poorer outlook from the same exposure.
What the vet will want to know and do
Expect radiographs if there is any chance of metal, blood tests to assess liver and kidney function, fluid support, and warmth. Treatment may include gastric lavage under sedation, specific antidotes where they exist, chelation for metal poisoning, and days to weeks of supportive care because a reptile recovers on a reptile timescale.

When to get help
Contact a reptile-experienced veterinarian immediately, at any hour, for tremors, twitching, inability to right itself, seizures, open-mouth breathing, collapse, or a swollen and painful mouth. Also go immediately for any swallowed metal object, and for a bearded dragon that has eaten a firefly.
Call the same day, even if the lizard looks well, for any known contact with insecticide, disinfectant, essential oil, medication, nicotine or a toxic plant. The absence of signs in the first hours is expected in a reptile and does not mean the exposure was harmless.
Book a follow-up regardless of how quickly the animal appears to recover. Liver and kidney injury declares itself late, and a recheck with bloods is how it gets caught while it is still treatable.
