Lizard sounds: which species actually vocalise, and why a clicking noise is not communication
Lizards do not call for their owners, and separation-related vocalising does not exist in this group. This guide maps which lizards genuinely vocalise, explains the hiss and the visual display that precedes it, and gives the one discriminator that matters: whether the sound repeats in time with breathing.

Quick answer
An open mouth on a calm, warm, quiet lizard is usually heat management, not a sound and not distress. An open mouth on a cool lizard, or one making a noise, is a different matter entirely.
Lizards do not call for you when you leave the room. There is no separation-related vocalising in this group, because the behaviour requires a social species that maintains group bonds with contact calls, and almost every lizard kept as a pet is solitary or territorial.
The genuinely useful skill is a different one: telling the small number of real lizard sounds apart from the much more important category, which is noise coming from the airway. In a lizard, an audible breathing noise is a late sign of respiratory disease, and it is a same-day problem.
- Geckos are the group that truly vocalises. Chirps, squeaks, clicks and barks from a gecko are usually normal communication.
- Everything else mostly hisses, and a hiss is a warning that precedes a bite.
- A click, pop, wheeze or bubble that repeats in time with breathing is medical, not behavioural.
- Open-mouth gaping on a hot basking lizard is thermoregulation. The same posture at the cool end, or with noise, is not.
- A noise that only happens when you leave has a trigger you have not found yet, most often a reflection, another pet, or a piece of equipment.

Any noise that repeats in time with each breath needs a vet the same day.
Lizards have no diaphragm, limited respiratory reserve, and very poor ability to clear material from the lungs. Their pus is firm and cheese-like rather than liquid, so infection forms solid plugs that cannot be coughed up. By the time a lizard's breathing is audible from outside the enclosure, the disease is usually well established. Noise is a late sign in this group, which is exactly why it cannot be watched for a week.

Why there is no lonely lizard
Separation distress is a specific behavioural syndrome and it has prerequisites. The animal must be socially bonded, must maintain contact with group members using calls, and must find the absence of those members aversive. That describes parrots very well, dogs reasonably well, and lizards not at all.
Almost every lizard kept as a pet is solitary or actively territorial as an adult. Their social signalling exists to say "this is my basking site", "I am larger than you", or "I am ready to breed". There is no affiliative contact call in the repertoire because there is no group to keep in contact with.
The physical machinery is mostly absent too. Most lizards do not have the vocal structures that produce controlled sound. Where genuine vocalisation exists, it is a specialised feature of particular families rather than a general lizard capability.
What lizards do have is learning. A lizard learns that a person at the glass predicts food, that a lamp coming on predicts warmth, and that a particular handling routine ends without harm. It habituates. It may approach the front of the enclosure when you enter the room. None of that is attachment, and none of it produces calling when you go out.
So if you are hearing a noise that seems tied to your leaving, the connection is coincidental and the trigger is something else. The most common culprits are your reflection or the room's reflection appearing in the glass once the room light changes, another pet approaching the enclosure once you are out of the way, a piece of equipment cycling on a timer that happens to match your routine, and vibration through the floor.
Which lizards actually make sounds

Handling, carriers and being lifted are the contexts that produce most lizard sound. A squeak or a hiss here is the animal telling you it has had enough, not greeting you.
Geckos are the real vocalisers. Many gecko species produce sound with a genuine communicative function, which is unusual among lizards. Tokay geckos give a loud, repeated territorial call, usually at night, that is unmistakable once heard and startling to a new keeper. Leopard geckos squeak and chirp, most often as juveniles, and most often when startled, crowded by another animal, or handled beyond their tolerance. Crested geckos chirp, squeak and sometimes produce a low growl, typically when disturbed or during breeding interactions. In these species, sound is part of normal behaviour.
Chameleons do not produce a communicative sound you can hear, but they generate low-frequency vibrations that travel through the branch or your hand. Keepers describe it as a buzz they feel rather than a noise. It usually accompanies handling or a defensive state.
Agamids, including bearded dragons, Chinese water dragons and uromastyx, hiss. That is the repertoire. A bearded dragon has no chirp, no call and no greeting sound.
Monitors hiss loudly, and in a large monitor the hiss comes with an inflated throat, a gaping mouth and often a tail whip. It is an unambiguous warning and it should be taken at face value.
Iguanas hiss, and also snort, which is different and covered below.
Skinks, including blue-tongues, hiss with the mouth open and the tongue displayed, which is a visual and acoustic threat combined.
The practical rule that comes out of this is short. If you keep a gecko, sound may be normal communication and the context tells you which. If you keep anything else, a sound is either a hiss, which is behaviour, or a breathing noise, which is medicine.
The hiss, and what to do with it
A hiss is air driven rapidly out through the glottis. It is a warning, and it usually sits near the end of a sequence of visual signals that the owner did not notice.
Look for what came first: the body flattened laterally and turned side-on to look larger, the beard or dewlap extended and often darkened, the mouth gaping, the back arched, the tail raised or lashing, and a fixed stare.
The correct response is to stop and withdraw. Not to hold on and prove you are safe. Continuing to handle through a display, sometimes described as showing the animal there is nothing to fear, teaches only that the display does not work, and the next thing in the sequence is the bite.
Then ask what changed, because a lizard that has become defensive usually has a reason:
- Temperature. A lizard that is too cold is slow, poorly coordinated and defensive. One that is overheated is also intolerant. Check the gradient before assuming a behaviour problem.
- A reflection. A bearded dragon that can see itself in the glass may spend its day displaying at a rival that never leaves. This is a common and entirely fixable cause of chronic stress.
- Another animal in the sightline. A cat sitting outside the enclosure changes everything about how a lizard experiences its home.
- Season and hormones. Breeding condition raises aggression in many species, in both sexes.
- Pain. A lizard that suddenly begins hissing when touched in a way it previously accepted may have an injury, a gravid abdomen, or bone disease that makes being lifted painful. A change in tolerance is a clinical sign, not a personality change.

Displays and hissing are directed at something. Another lizard, a reflection in the glass, or a pet on the other side of the room. Find the target before treating the behaviour.
The noises that are medical
These share one feature: they repeat in time with breathing. That is the discriminator, and it is the only one you need.
A click or pop, often at the end of each breath, as air moves past secretions.
A wheeze or whistle, as air passes a narrowed airway.
A bubbling or gurgling sound, frequently with mucus visible at the nostrils or in the mouth.
Open-mouth breathing when the animal is not basking and not hot, especially with the neck extended forward and upward.
Any of these means the airway has enough material in it to be audible from outside a glass enclosure, which in a lizard means the process is not early. Reptile respiratory infection develops quietly, the animal compensates until it cannot, and the noise arrives late.
The underlying cause is very often husbandry rather than an infectious agent arriving from outside. A gradient that has failed, a hot end that stopped working, a cool room, a damp substrate in a species that needs it dry, or a dry setup in a species that needs humidity, all set the conditions. That is why the first questions at the appointment will be about your temperatures.
Gaping is usually heat
A basking lizard with its mouth open is often just dumping heat. The picture is a calm animal, positioned under or beside the lamp, body flattened toward the heat source, still, silent, with normal posture and no discharge.
The same open mouth means something different when:
- It happens at the cool end, or away from any heat source
- It comes with a sound
- The neck is stretched forward and upward
- There is mucus, bubbling or discharge at the nostrils or mouth
- The animal is also lethargic, off food, or holding an abnormal posture
- It comes with a darkened beard, a flattened body and a hiss, in which case it is a threat display rather than either
If your lizard gapes constantly while basking, also check the hot end is not simply too hot. Persistent gaping under the lamp can mean the basking surface has crept above what the species needs.
The sounds that are not sounds
The iguana salt snort. Green iguanas and some other lizards excrete excess sodium and potassium through nasal salt glands and expel it with a sharp, forceful snort, leaving dry white crystalline deposits on the snout, the glass and nearby surfaces. This is normal physiology and it alarms new keepers constantly. The deposits should be white and dry. Coloured, wet or persistent discharge is a different thing.
Scratching and scrabbling at the glass. Not a vocalisation and not loneliness. It is a signal about the enclosure: an inadequate gradient, too few hides, a reflection, a sightline that makes the animal feel exposed, or a gravid female looking for somewhere to dig.
Digging noises at night. In a female of breeding age, this can mean she is searching for a lay site, and if it goes on without result it needs attention.
Crunching during a meal. Normal in insectivores, and loud in a large lizard eating a hard-bodied insect.
Equipment. Thermostat relays click, lamp fans whine, timers snap, and pumps hum. More than one lizard has been taken to a vet for a clicking noise that turned out to be a thermostat on the shelf above the enclosure. Before you record the animal, stand quietly with the equipment switched off and listen again.
How to work out what a noise means
Film it. Video, not audio, with the whole animal in frame, in its enclosure, close enough to see the flanks moving. This single step answers the question faster than any description, because a vet can see whether the sound falls in time with the breath.
Note the context. What was happening, where in the enclosure the animal was, what the temperature was at that spot, what time of day, and whether anyone or anything was near the glass.
Test whether it is rhythmic. Does it occur on every breath, at the same point in the breath. Rhythmic means airway. Occasional and tied to an event means behaviour.
Check the temperatures at the moment it happened, not later. Use a probe or an infrared thermometer at the surface where the animal was sitting.
Look for the target. Get down to the animal's eye level and look outward. You will often find the reflection, the cat, or the window that you cannot see from standing height.
The routine that keeps this readable
What never to do
Never assume a noise is your lizard talking to you. In everything except geckos, that interpretation is wrong and it delays a diagnosis.
Never handle through a hiss.
Never wait a week to see whether a breathing noise settles.
Never raise the temperature on your own to "sweat out" a respiratory infection. Reptile treatment does involve keeping the animal at the correct end of its preferred range, but that is a specific instruction from a vet, and overheating a sick lizard makes things worse.
Never use a human or veterinary product left over from another animal. Reptile drug dosing depends on species and on the temperature the animal is kept at, because metabolism is temperature-dependent.
Never dismiss a change in handling tolerance as the lizard becoming grumpy. Sudden defensiveness is frequently pain.
What the vet will ask for
- Species, age, sex, and how long you have had the animal
- Video of the sound with the animal in frame
- Hot end and cool end surface temperatures, how they are measured, and where the probe sits
- Humidity, substrate, and whether it is damp
- UVB lamp type, distance, whether there is mesh in between, and when it was last replaced
- Appetite, weight, shedding history and droppings
- When the sound started, how often it occurs, and in what context
- Whether anything changed in the setup, the room or the household beforehand
Expect an examination that includes listening to the chest, looking in the mouth and at the glottis, and a careful look at the nostrils. Radiographs are the main imaging step for lung disease, and a wash or swab from the airway may be taken for culture, which is what makes antibiotic choice sensible rather than a guess.
Expect a treatment course measured in weeks rather than days if a respiratory infection is confirmed, and expect the husbandry conversation to be a major part of the plan rather than an afterthought.

When to get help

Quiet, mouth closed, even flank movement, normal posture. This is the baseline worth filming while it is true, because every judgement you make later is a comparison against it.
Go immediately for:
- Breathing with the mouth open and the neck stretched forward, away from a heat source
- Any bubbling, gurgling, or mucus at the nostrils or mouth
- Visible effort with each breath, or a lizard that cannot settle
- Collapse, or a lizard that cannot right itself
Go the same day for:
- Any click, pop, wheeze or whistle that repeats with breathing
- A new noise in an animal that has also gone off food
- A female straining or digging repeatedly without laying
Book an appointment within a few days for a change in handling tolerance, new defensiveness, or hissing that has appeared without an obvious trigger, because in a lizard a change in temperament is frequently a change in how the animal feels.
And if the noise turns out to be the thermostat, that is a good outcome. Check it before you book.
