Lizard skin infections: scale rot, fungal disease and burns told apart
Damaged lizard skin gets colonised before it gets repaired. How reptile skin and temperature-dependent immunity work, how to tell bacterial dermatitis, burns, fungal disease and retained shed apart, how each progresses, and why daily bathing and ointments make it worse.

Quick answer
A lizard's skin does not heal the way a mammal's does, and a small skin lesion is not a small problem. Reptile skin has a thin, poorly vascularised outer layer, it repairs on a shed cycle rather than continuously, and the immune response behind it only works properly when the animal can reach its preferred body temperature.
That combination means damaged skin gets colonised before it gets repaired. Most cases are bacterial, usually by organisms that were already living harmlessly in the enclosure, and most of those trace back to something wet, something dirty, something too cold, or a burn.
- Look at the belly. Ventral scales sit against the substrate and show damage first.
- Sharply outlined damage over the back or belly, in the shape of a heat source, is a burn until proved otherwise.
- Yellow to brown crusts that survive a shed and keep spreading suggest fungal disease, not dirt.
- Tight rings on toes and tail tip after a shed are retained skin, a different problem with a different fix.
- A pink or red flush across the belly, with pinpoint red marks in the scales, means the infection may already be in the blood. Same-day veterinary help.

A red or bruised looking underside in a lizard is an emergency sign, not a cosmetic one.
Pinpoint red marks in the ventral scales, or a diffuse pink to purple flush across the belly, suggest bacteria in the bloodstream. Reptiles decline slowly and then collapse, and by the time the flush appears the animal is usually already anorexic and weak.
Do not wait for a routine appointment slot, do not soak the animal, and do not start any home treatment that will make a sample useless. Raise the enclosure to the upper part of the correct range for the species so the immune system can function, and get to a reptile-experienced vet the same day.

Why lizard skin fails the way it does
Reptile skin is built for water conservation, not for rapid repair. The outer layer is heavily keratinised and largely without blood supply, and it is replaced in periodic sheds rather than continuously renewed. A break in that layer stays open longer than it would in a mammal.
Underneath, the response to infection is different in a way that changes the whole treatment plan. Reptile white cells produce a firm, caseous inflammatory mass rather than liquid pus. That mass is walled off, poorly penetrated by antibiotics carried in the blood, and often has to be removed surgically. This is why a lizard abscess or a deep skin infection is a surgical problem far more often than owners expect.
All of it runs on temperature. A reptile at the cool end of its range has a suppressed immune response continuously, and the same course of medication that would clear an infection in a properly heated animal can fail entirely in a cold one. Every skin case is therefore also a husbandry case.
The organisms involved are rarely exotic. Species of Pseudomonas, Aeromonas, Citrobacter and similar bacteria live in damp substrate, in stagnant water bowls and in faeces. They cause no problem on intact skin. Give them a scrape, a burn, a shed injury or continuously wet ventral scales and they become pathogens.
What healthy skin looks like
Set your baseline before you need it, because the earliest changes are subtle and the memory of "normal" drifts.
Healthy scales sit flat and interlock evenly, with no raised or lifted edges. Colour is uniform for the species and pattern, and the ventral scales are usually paler, dry, and matte or faintly glossy.
The belly of a healthy lizard is dry to look at. If the underside is habitually damp when you pick the animal up, the enclosure floor is the problem regardless of what the hygrometer on the wall says.
A normal shed cycle looks alarming to new owners. Colour goes dull and greyish, the eyes may look cloudy in some species, and the skin lifts in patches over a few days. Geckos shed in a shorter, more complete event and usually eat the skin. The key feature of a normal shed is that it resolves. Anything still present after the shed has finished is not shed.

Bacterial dermatitis, often called scale rot, is a floor problem.
The classic recipe is a substrate that stays wet, a water bowl that overflows or gets sat in, faeces that are not spot-cleaned daily, poor ventilation, and a temperature at or below the bottom of the species range. Arid species kept on misted or soaked substrate get it fastest, because their scales are not built for continuous contact with moisture.
Thermal burns are underestimated on day one.
A burn keeps declaring itself for days as damaged tissue dies back, so the lesion you see on the first evening is usually smaller than the final one. Heat rocks, unthermostatted mats and lamps a lizard can climb to reach are the recurring causes. A lizard will lie on a surface that is burning it, because reptiles sense heat gradients well but respond poorly to a contact surface that is dangerously hot in one spot.
Fungal disease behaves differently from everything else.
The organisms in the Nannizziopsis group, best known in bearded dragons as yellow fungus disease, invade living skin rather than sitting on top of it. The lesions are dry and crusted rather than wet, they persist through sheds, and they enlarge steadily. It can spread to other reptiles and it can become systemic. A lizard with this pattern should be housed separately, handled last, and its equipment kept separate until a diagnosis is made.
Retained shed is mechanical, not infectious, until it is not.
A ring of retained skin on a toe acts as a tourniquet. Left in place across two or three shed cycles it can cost the toe. The distinction that matters is whether you are looking at skin sitting on top of a normal digit or at a swollen, discoloured digit underneath.
How it progresses
Owners catch this early only if they know what early looks like.
Stage one, discolouration.
Ventral scales change colour, usually to yellow, tan or brown. Nothing is open. The lizard behaves normally. This is the point at which correcting the enclosure alone often resolves it.
Stage two, erosion and blistering.
Scale edges lift, small fluid-filled blisters appear, the surface becomes soft or pitted. The lizard may start basking more, which is a reptile's version of running a fever.
Stage three, ulceration.
The skin is open, tissue is exposed, there may be an odour, and margins are irregular and dark. Appetite usually drops here.
Stage four, deep and systemic.
Infection reaches muscle, joint or bone, or enters the bloodstream. The belly flushes pink or red, pinpoint haemorrhages appear between scales, and the lizard becomes lethargic and stops eating. This stage has a poor outcome even with intensive treatment, which is the whole argument for acting at stage one.
What changes by species, age and season
Arid species suffer from well-meant misting.
Uromastyx, many agamas and desert-adapted geckos are built for dry ground and low ambient humidity. Advice written for a crested gecko applied to a uromastyx produces scale rot. Match the humidity to the species, not to the shop's general reptile advice.
Humidity-dependent species suffer from the opposite error.
Crested geckos, day geckos and chameleons kept too dry get incomplete sheds, and repeated retained shed damages the skin it leaves behind. Ambient humidity with good ventilation is what these animals need. A stagnant wet tank is not the same thing as a humid one, and it is far more dangerous.
Leopard geckos have particularly delicate skin.
It tears easily under restraint, and the toes are the classic site for constricting retained shed. A humid hide is the correct tool here rather than handling the shed off.
Bearded dragons are the species where fungal disease is most often seen.
Any dry, spreading, crusted lesion on a bearded dragon deserves fungal disease to be actively ruled out rather than treated as a burn or as dirt.
Juveniles shed far more often than adults, so shed-related problems cluster in young animals, and any period of poor growth or poor husbandry shows up as a run of bad sheds.
Older animals and animals with any chronic disease have less reserve and are the ones in whom a minor skin lesion turns into a systemic infection.
Winter is the high-risk season in most homes.
Central heating dries the air, owners compensate by misting or adding damp substrate, and at the same time ambient temperatures drop overnight when the heating goes off. A cool, wet enclosure is the exact combination that produces bacterial dermatitis, and it is why these cases cluster in the colder months.
Where the usual advice goes wrong
"Bathe it every day."
Daily soaking is the standard internet answer to almost every reptile problem and it is actively harmful here. Prolonged wetting softens and macerates already damaged ventral scales, and it is the same moisture that caused the problem. Soaking also carries a real drowning and aspiration risk in a weak animal.
"Put an antiseptic ointment on it."
Thick occlusive ointments seal a keratinised surface and can trap bacteria underneath. Some human preparations contain topical anaesthetic or steroid ingredients that are not appropriate for a reptile. Beyond that, any topical you apply before the appointment reduces the chance of getting a useful sample, and the treatment for a bacterial infection, a fungal infection and a burn are not the same.
"Raise the humidity."
Correct only if the problem is a dry-shed problem. If the problem is a wet floor, raising humidity makes it worse. Ambient humidity and substrate wetness are different measurements and need to be judged separately.
"Peel the stuck shed off."
Pulling skin that is not ready tears the new epidermis underneath and creates the entry point you were trying to avoid. Restore the correct humidity, offer a humid hide, and let the animal do it.
"The vet gave antibiotics, so the enclosure is not the issue."
It is always the issue. Medication addresses the current organisms. Temperature decides whether the animal can mount its own response, and hygiene decides whether it gets reinfected the week after the course ends.
The routine that catches it early
What the vet will want
Bring the numbers, not impressions. Basking surface temperature, cool end temperature, the overnight low, ambient humidity, and how each was measured.
Bring the husbandry history: substrate type and when it was last fully changed, water bowl size and placement, how heat is provided and whether it is thermostatted, UVB lamp type and its replacement date, and the ventilation arrangement.
Bring the timeline: when the lesion first appeared, whether it has survived a shed, when the last complete shed was, and whether appetite, activity or weight have changed.
Say whether there are other reptiles in the house, whether they share equipment, and whether any new animal has arrived recently and how it was quarantined.
Expect the vet to take samples. Skin cytology, bacterial culture with sensitivity testing, fungal culture or PCR, and sometimes a biopsy are how these four look-alikes are actually separated. Expect treatment to be measured in weeks to months, because a reptile's healing runs on a reptile's clock and the skin has to be rebuilt across shed cycles.
What never to do
Do not burst a blister. The intact roof is the best dressing that lesion will have until a vet is looking at it.
Do not apply human antibiotic or antifungal creams, essential oils, tea tree preparations, honey preparations or disinfectants intended for surfaces.
Do not house a lizard with active skin disease with other reptiles, and do not share tongs, bowls, thermometers or hands between enclosures until a diagnosis is made.
Do not drop the temperature to slow an infection down. The opposite is true. Keeping the animal in the upper part of its correct range is part of the treatment.
Do not use a heat rock, and do not run a heat mat without a thermostat. These remain the single most common cause of avoidable burns in pet lizards.
Do not stop treatment when the lesion looks better. Reptile skin looks better before it is better, and relapse after an early stop is one of the commonest reasons a case becomes chronic.

When to get help
Contact a reptile-experienced veterinarian the same day for a red or flushed belly, pinpoint red marks between scales, open ulcers, blisters, a suspected burn, swelling, a foul smell, or any skin problem in a lizard that has also stopped eating.
Book within the week for discoloured or softened ventral scales without ulceration, for crusts that have survived a shed, and for retained shed on a toe that you cannot resolve by correcting humidity.
While you wait, dry the enclosure out, remove any substrate that holds moisture, replace it temporarily with plain paper towel that you change daily, disconnect any heat source the animal can touch directly, and bring the enclosure into the upper part of the correct temperature range for the species so the immune system can do its part.
