Lizard portion size and feeding frequency: how much, how often, and the growth-rate trap
Feeding frequency in lizards is set by digestion speed, which is set by basking temperature, and portion size is set by feeding guild and life stage rather than by a fixed table. This guide explains how to read body condition in different lizard groups, why power-feeding juveniles causes bone and reproductive disease, and how a weekly weight log answers the question that care sheets cannot.

Quick answer
A measured bowl, offered at a known time on a clean surface, is the only way to know what your lizard actually ate.
There is no single feeding schedule for lizards, because "lizard" covers insect eaters, plant eaters, omnivores that change guild as they grow, and predators that eat whole vertebrates. The right question is never "how often do I feed a lizard", it is "what does this species eat, at what stage of life, and at what body temperature".
Feed to a body condition and a weight trend, not to a table. A kitchen scale and a written weight log will tell you more in a month than any care sheet, because it measures your animal in your room at your temperatures.

Never feed animal protein to an obligate herbivore.
Uromastyx, green iguanas, chuckwallas and other plant-eating lizards have a hindgut fermentation system and a uric acid excretion system built around a low-protein, high-fibre diet. Insects, dog food, cat food and boiled egg given "as a treat" push uric acid production past what the kidneys can clear.
The result is visceral and articular gout: crystal deposits in the joints and around the organs. It is painful, it is largely irreversible, and it is one of the commonest causes of premature death in captive iguanas. There is no safe occasional amount.

Why temperature sets the feeding interval, not the calendar
A lizard does not generate its own body heat. Every enzyme in its digestive tract works at a rate set by the temperature of the animal, which is set by the temperature of the surfaces and air you provide.
At the correct basking temperature for the species, a meal moves through the gut, is broken down, and the residue is passed. Below that temperature the same meal sits in the gut. Bacteria continue to work on it, gas accumulates, and the animal becomes bloated, lethargic and sometimes regurgitates food days after eating it.
This is why the single most common cause of "my lizard has stopped eating" is not disease and not food preference. It is a failed heat source, a thermostat drifting out of calibration, a lamp that has aged, or an enclosure moved to a colder wall.
It also explains the seasonal pattern. Many species reduce intake as day length shortens and ambient temperature falls, even indoors, because the same photoperiod and temperature cues that drive brumation in the wild still operate in a living room.
Before you change a single thing about the food, measure the basking surface with an infrared thermometer and confirm the UVB lamp is within its usable life. Feeding advice applied to a cold animal does nothing.
What the feeding guild changes
Guild is the first fork in every decision, and it is not always obvious from the animal's appearance.
Insectivores.
Leopard geckos, most day geckos, many small skinks and geckos take whole invertebrates only. Their calcium comes almost entirely from what you dust onto the insect, because insect exoskeleton is chitin and the body of a feeder insect is phosphorus-heavy and calcium-poor.
Omnivores that shift with age.
Bearded dragons and blue-tongue skinks eat mostly invertebrates as hatchlings and mostly plants as adults. Owners who keep feeding the juvenile ratio into adulthood produce the classic overweight adult dragon with fat pads and a fatty liver.
Obligate herbivores.
Uromastyx, green iguanas and chuckwallas ferment plant fibre in a large hindgut. They need volume and fibre, not protein density, and they are the group harmed by well-meant protein "treats".
Carnivores.
Monitors and tegus take whole vertebrate prey and larger invertebrates. Feeding these species processed meat or muscle-only cuts removes the bone, organ and gut content that make whole prey nutritionally complete.
Prepared-diet specialists.
Crested geckos and several related species are maintained on complete powdered fruit-and-insect diets mixed with water. For these animals the meal is the diet, and insects are a supplement rather than the base.
If you are not certain which guild your animal belongs to, that is the question to settle before any portion question, because the answers point in opposite directions.
What a correctly fed lizard looks like

Chopped small enough to swallow without tearing, varied within the meal, and offered in a shallow dish rather than scattered on substrate.
Body condition in lizards is read from the skeleton and from the species' own fat depot, not from overall size.
In a bearded dragon or similar agamid, the hip bones and the spine should be palpable but not sharp, the tail base should taper smoothly from the body, and the armpit should not bulge when the animal is standing. Fat pads sitting proud on the top of the head and a tail base as thick as the body are overweight signs.
In a leopard gecko the tail is the fat store, and a plump tail is the goal, not the problem. A leopard gecko with a thin, pencil-like tail is in negative energy balance and needs investigation. Applying bearded dragon standards to a leopard gecko leads owners to underfeed a healthy animal.
In a chameleon the casque and the ribs should not stand out, the eye turrets should be full rather than sunken, and the base of the tail should be rounded rather than showing the vertebral spines.
Behaviour is the second half of the picture. A well-fed, correctly heated lizard basks with purpose, moves around the enclosure, and takes offered food within a minute or two without needing to be tempted.
Droppings tell you whether digestion is completing. A formed dark portion with a distinct white or cream urate portion is what you want. Persistently loose stool, undigested insect parts in the faeces, or hard yellow-orange urates all point back to temperature, hydration or parasites.
Portions: the rules that work, and the one that ruins adults

The scale is the instrument. Weigh the food and weigh the animal, and the guesswork disappears.
Item size before item count.
The widely used keeper rule is that no prey item should be wider than the space between the lizard's eyes. Oversized prey is the mechanism behind regurgitation, and in small geckos it is a genuine cause of neurological injury, because a hard-bodied insect lodged in the throat presses on the spine at the base of the skull.
Chop plant matter to a size the animal can take in one bite. Long strands and whole leaves get torn, and torn food ends up on substrate and gets eaten with it.
The ten-minute rule is a juvenile rule.
"Offer as many insects as the animal will eat in ten to fifteen minutes" is a reasonable frame for a growing hatchling with a high metabolic demand. Applied to an adult it produces a heavier animal every month, because an adult lizard in a warm enclosure with no predators and no seasonal scarcity will keep eating well past its requirement.
For adults, work the other way around. Set a portion, feed it, and let the weekly weight tell you whether it was right.
Weigh food where a small error matters.
Portion accuracy matters most for small species and for prepared diets, where a spoon estimate is a large proportion of the meal. It matters least for a herbivore's salad, which is intentionally offered in excess so the animal can select.
Feed in a dish, not on substrate.
A shallow dish keeps food off loose substrate, keeps insects from scattering, and gives you a way to see what came back uneaten. Substrate ingested along with food is a recognised route to impaction in several species.
Frequency by life stage
Hatchlings and juveniles.
Growing lizards have a real, continuous protein and calcium demand and are fed daily, often more than once a day in insectivorous species. Calcium supplementation matters more at this stage than at any other, because bone is being laid down fast.
Subadults.
This is the stage owners miss. The animal still looks young and still begs, but the growth demand is tapering. Frequency should come down gradually rather than at a single cut-off date.
Adults.
Most adult pet lizards eat considerably less often than their juvenile selves. Insect feeds drop to a few times a week in omnivores, plant matter is offered daily, and prepared-diet species move to an every-other-day or similar pattern.
Older animals.
Appetite often reduces with age, and a mild reduction alongside a stable weight is not an emergency. Weight loss with reduced appetite in an older lizard is a different matter, and kidney disease is high on the list.
Gravid and breeding animals.
A female building a clutch eats heavily, then stops entirely close to laying. A male in breeding condition may refuse food for weeks. Both are normal, both cause weight change, and neither is fixed by offering more food.
The growth-rate trap
Reptile growth is often described as if faster is better. It is not.
Under captive conditions a lizard can be pushed to grow far faster than it would in the wild, because food is unlimited, temperature is optimal every day, and nothing is hunting it. The skeleton and the organs do not scale at the same rate as soft tissue when this happens.
Push a juvenile hard and the predictable results are metabolic bone disease when calcium and usable UVB cannot keep up with the rate of bone deposition, and a shortened lifespan from renal and hepatic disease later.
In female veiled chameleons and several other species, heavy feeding in the first year drives large and repeated clutches of infertile eggs. Each clutch costs calcium and body condition, and dystocia is a common consequence. Moderating intake in young females is one of the few interventions that measurably reduces that risk.
Slow, steady growth with a stable body condition is the target. A lizard that reaches adult size later and lives longer has been better kept than one that reached it early.
Changes that mean act today
Weight loss with a normal or increased appetite.
This is the pattern that most often means disease rather than diet. Internal parasites, kidney disease, and chronic gut infection all allow the animal to keep eating while it loses condition. It needs a faecal test and a vet exam, not more food.
Sudden refusal in an animal that was eating well, outside the cooling season.
Check the heat first, then the mouth. Retained shed, mouth infection, an abscess along the jaw, or a foreign body will all stop a lizard eating.
Regurgitation.
Bringing food back up hours or days after a meal points to the animal being too cool to digest, a prey item that was too large, or a gut infection. Regurgitation twice in a row is a same-week veterinary problem, not a feeding adjustment.
Straining with no output.
An animal pushing without producing droppings, particularly with a firm palpable swelling in the lower body, may be impacted or egg bound. Stop feeding and get advice the same day. Feeding into a blockage makes it worse.
Swollen joints, stiff gait, or a reluctance to move in a herbivorous species.
Suspect gout, and think about whether any animal protein has entered the diet.
The routine that catches problems early
A month of weekly weights turns an argument about whether the animal looks thinner into a line on a page.

A correctly fed adult finishes the meal, moves off, and settles to bask. Continued frantic searching after a full meal usually means the portion or the guild is wrong.
What never to do
Do not feed wild-caught insects to a pet lizard. They carry parasites, and in regions with intensive agriculture or mosquito control programmes they carry pesticide residues that a small animal cannot clear.
Do not switch supplements or diet and feeding schedule at the same time. If something goes wrong you will not know which change caused it.
Do not feed a lizard that is too cool to digest. Warm the animal properly first, then feed.
Do not use fruit as a routine base for a herbivorous or omnivorous lizard. High sugar, low calcium and high water content displace the fibre these animals actually run on and disrupt hindgut fermentation.
Do not assume a care sheet written in another country applies to your feeder options. Locusts are a standard feeder in the United Kingdom and much of Europe and are restricted in the United States. Some roach species are restricted in parts of North America. Availability of specific greens varies enormously by climate and season, and the right answer is to match the nutritional profile locally rather than to import a shopping list.
Do not force-feed a refusing lizard without a diagnosis. Assist feeding into an obstructed or infected gut causes harm.

Contact a reptile-experienced veterinarian the same day for straining with no droppings, a firm abdominal swelling, repeated regurgitation, swollen joints in a plant-eating species, or collapse.
Book within the week for weight loss with a normal appetite, a refusal that falls outside the animal's normal seasonal pattern, persistently loose droppings, or any change in the shape of the tail base or the hips that you can see in your monthly photographs.

Most feeding consultations are solved by that history rather than by examining the animal, because the answer is usually in the interaction between temperature, light and portion rather than in the lizard itself.
