Lizard nights: darkness, night heat, and what restlessness after dark means

Whether night activity is normal depends entirely on the species, and for a diurnal lizard it almost always traces back to the enclosure. This guide explains how light reaches a lizard including through the parietal eye, why red and blue night bulbs are light rather than darkness, how to provide night heat safely with a thermostatted non-light source, and how to work through the causes of genuine restlessness from reflections and temperature to a gravid female searching for a lay site.

Quick answer

What happens when this lamp goes off matters as much as what it does while it is on.

The first question is what species you have. A leopard gecko or a crested gecko moving about at night is doing exactly what it evolved to do. A bearded dragon or a uromastyx doing the same thing has a problem.

For a diurnal lizard, night activity almost always traces back to the enclosure: light it can still see, a temperature that is wrong in one direction or the other, or a female looking for somewhere to lay.

  • Coloured night bulbs are visible to reptiles. Red and blue "night" lamps are light, not darkness, and they disrupt sleep.
  • Night heat, where a species needs it, should come from a non-light-emitting source on a thermostat.
  • Most species need a genuine drop in temperature at night. Holding daytime heat around the clock is its own problem.
  • A diurnal female digging and pacing at night is often gravid and looking for a lay site. This is urgent, not behavioural.
  • Sit in the room with the lights off. Anything you can see glowing, the lizard can see too.

Never use a heat rock, and never run a heat mat or heat cable without a thermostat.

Reptiles do not reliably move away from a contact heat source that is too hot, because their heat-seeking behaviour is driven by the surface they are on and by ambient gradient rather than by pain from a small hot spot. Thermal burns from unregulated contact heat are among the most common serious injuries in captive lizards, and they are deep, slow to heal and prone to infection.

Ceramic heat emitters and radiant panels also need a thermostat and, in most setups, a guard, because a lizard that climbs onto an unguarded emitter will be badly burned.

How light actually reaches a lizard

Lizards entrain their internal clock to the light cycle, and they do it through more than the eyes. Many species have a parietal eye, a light-sensitive structure under a translucent scale on top of the head, connected to the pineal region. It does not form images. It measures light, and it feeds directly into the systems that control daily rhythm, seasonal cycling and thermoregulatory behaviour.

That is why covering the front of an enclosure while leaving a lamp overhead does very little, and why a lizard can be affected by light it is not looking at.

It also explains why the marketing category of "night bulbs" is a problem. Red, blue and purple lamps were sold on the premise that reptiles cannot see red. They can. A red lamp running all night is a lit enclosure, and the animal in it is living in a permanent dim day.

The consequences build slowly. Appetite becomes erratic, the animal is active at the wrong times, seasonal behaviours arrive at odd moments or not at all, and over months the immune consequences of chronic sleep disruption show up as an animal that catches everything.

What a lizard needs at night is darkness. If it also needs heat, that heat must come from a source that emits no visible light.

Getting night heat right

Use a non-light-emitting source.
A ceramic heat emitter or a radiant heat panel produces heat without light. These are the correct tools for night heat.

Always run it on a thermostat.
Unregulated heat sources overshoot. A thermostat with the probe positioned where the animal actually contacts or occupies the heat, not dangling in mid air or stuck to the far end of the glass, is what keeps the temperature where you set it.

Allow the drop the species needs.
Most lizards experience a cooler night in the wild, and that cycle is part of normal physiology. Some tropical and montane species need very little drop; desert species tolerate a substantial one. This is a species-specific number, so use a care sheet for your exact species and confirm it with a reptile vet or an experienced keeper rather than applying a general figure.

Measure rather than assume.
Use a probe thermometer or an infrared surface thermometer to check the basking surface, the cool end and the inside of the hides after the lights have been off for a while. Stick-on dial thermometers are not accurate enough to make decisions with.

Guard anything hot.
A lizard that can climb to a ceramic emitter will do so.

Plan for a power cut.
Know what you will do if heating fails overnight in winter. A safe fallback plan matters more for reptiles than for almost any other pet.

Species: the question that changes the answer

Nocturnal and crepuscular species.
Leopard geckos, African fat-tailed geckos, crested geckos, gargoyle geckos, tokay geckos and many others are active in the evening and at night. Movement, hunting, climbing and vocalising after dark are normal. These species also generally need no bright basking lamp, and several are harmed by excessive heat and light.

For these animals, the concerning pattern is the opposite one: an animal that has become active during the day, or that stops being active at night.

Diurnal species.
Bearded dragons, uromastyx, green iguanas, day geckos, many skinks and monitors. These should settle at dusk and stay settled. Night activity is a finding, not a personality trait.

Species with strong seasonal cycles.
Temperate species that brumate become restless as the season turns, and males in breeding condition become restless and less interested in food. Knowing whether your species cycles, and when, prevents a normal seasonal change being treated as a problem.

Juveniles.
Young lizards of diurnal species sleep heavily and settle earlier. A juvenile awake and moving at night is more significant than an adult doing the same.

Why a diurnal lizard is up at night

Work through these roughly in order.

Light it can still see.
A coloured night lamp, a television, a standby LED, a router light, a phone charging on a bedside table, a streetlight through a gap in the curtains, or a hallway light left on. Sit in the room in the dark for a minute and look.

Temperature too high.
No night drop, or a heat source that continues to run because the thermostat probe is in the wrong place. A lizard that cannot cool down moves around trying to.

Temperature too low.
The opposite pattern. The animal moves to look for warmth it cannot find, and may sit where a heat source was during the day.

A photoperiod that has changed abruptly.
Timers moved, clocks changed, lamps left on late. Reptiles adjust to a gradually shifting day length, not to sudden jumps.

A gravid female.
Persistent digging, pacing, restlessness and reduced appetite in an adult female is a lay-site search. Females produce eggs without a male, and a female with nowhere suitable to lay is at risk of becoming egg bound, which is life-threatening. Provide a deep, slightly damp lay box she can dig into, and arrange a veterinary assessment.

No usable hide.
A lizard with nowhere to feel enclosed will not settle. Hides should be tight-fitting and available at both the warm and cool ends.

Reflections.
Glass sides, particularly with a dark room outside, produce a reflection the animal reads as another lizard or as an opening. This drives scratching and pacing at the front.

Vibration and noise.
An enclosure on or near a washing machine, a subwoofer, a boiler or a fridge transmits vibration that reptiles are sensitive to.

Hunger.
Particularly in a growing animal or one on a restricted feeding schedule.

Mites.
Snake mites also affect lizards. They are most active at night, and an infested animal is restless, soaks excessively and rubs against furnishings. Look for small dark moving specks, particularly around the eyes, ears and skin folds, and for tiny white specks of mite waste.

Pain or illness.
Metabolic bone disease, impaction, injury, or respiratory disease. A restless lizard sitting with its head raised, gaping, or making any noise on breathing needs to be seen the same day.

The night audit

Do this once, properly, and it usually answers the question.

  • Species, age, sex and how long you have had the animal.
  • The exact lighting setup: lamp types, wattages, distances, and the on and off times.
  • Whether any lamp runs overnight, and what colour it is.
  • Measured temperatures at the basking site, cool end and hides, both day and night, taken with a probe or infrared thermometer.
  • The UVB lamp type, its distance from the animal, whether it passes through mesh, and the date it was last replaced.
  • Humidity, and whether a humid hide is provided.
  • Feeding schedule and the last few weights.
  • Droppings: frequency and appearance.
  • For females, whether she has been with a male, whether she has laid before, and whether digging is occurring.
  • A night recording if you have one.

What never to do

Do not use red, blue or any coloured night lamp.

Do not leave a basking lamp or UVB lamp on overnight.

Do not use a heat rock at any time.

Do not run a heat mat, cable or ceramic emitter without a thermostat.

Do not leave a ceramic emitter unguarded inside an enclosure a lizard can climb.

Do not hold daytime temperatures through the night for a species that needs a drop.

Do not treat night digging in an adult female as a behaviour problem.

Do not change the photoperiod abruptly. Move it in small steps over days.

Do not assume a nocturnal species is unwell because it is awake at night.

My leopard gecko is awake and hunting at two in the morning. Should I stop that?
No. Leopard geckos are crepuscular to nocturnal and that is their normal active window. What you should check is that the enclosure supports it: hides available, a warm surface to digest on, and no bright lamp running. If anything, a leopard gecko that has become active in the day and inactive at night is the one worth investigating.
Is a moonlight or blue bulb better than a red one?
No. Any bulb producing visible light is producing light. Blue and purple lamps are, if anything, more disruptive. The correct product for night heat is a ceramic heat emitter or a radiant panel that produces no visible light, controlled by a thermostat.
My bearded dragon has started scratching at the glass every evening. What is it?
Look at reflections first, because a dark room behind glass turns the enclosure into a mirror. Then look at temperature, at whether the enclosure is large enough, and at whether there is a tight hide available. In an adult female, add the possibility of a lay-site search. Persistent glass scratching is a message about the enclosure rather than a habit to be broken.
We changed the clocks and now the lizard's schedule seems off. Does that matter?
A sudden one-hour shift is not usually harmful, but reptiles do best on a photoperiod that changes gradually. Move timers in small increments over several days rather than all at once, and consider matching the seasonal photoperiod your species would experience in the wild, which for temperate species is part of what drives normal appetite and breeding cycles.

When to get help

Contact a reptile vet the same day for restlessness with gaping, open-mouth breathing, any noise on breathing, an animal that cannot right itself, tremors, or a female straining.

Book within the week for persistent digging in an adult female, weight loss alongside the night activity, a change in droppings, suspected mites, or restlessness that continues after you have corrected light and temperature.

Bring the measured temperatures, the lighting schedule, the UVB lamp details and replacement date, and any night recording. In a restless lizard, the enclosure data is usually what makes the diagnosis, and it is not something the vet can gather in the consulting room.
