Lizard mites and ticks: where they hide, and clearing the whole enclosure
Reptile mites live in the enclosure and only visit the lizard to feed, which is why treating the animal alone always fails. How to find them on the eyelids, ear openings and gular fold, tell them from retained shed and fungal disease, judge when blood loss has become dangerous, remove ticks safely, and clear the whole vivarium without poisoning the animal.

Quick answer
Mites are found by looking, in bright light, at the folds where they shelter. A quick glance at the back of a lizard finds nothing.
Reptile mites are tiny blood-feeding parasites that live in the enclosure and visit the lizard to feed. That single fact decides everything about how you get rid of them: treating the animal without stripping and treating the enclosure always fails.
The earliest sign is usually behavioural rather than visible. A lizard that suddenly starts sitting in its water bowl, rubbing its face on decor, or shedding in ragged patches is telling you to look closely at its eyelids, ear openings and gular fold.
- The common reptile mite is a dark, poppy-seed-sized speck that moves. If it does not move, it is dirt, shed skin or substrate.
- Mites shelter in the enclosure, not on the animal, between meals. Most of the population is in the substrate, the silicone seams and the porous decor.
- Heavy infestations cause anaemia, and mites carry bacteria between animals, so this is a health problem and not just a nuisance.
- Ticks are a separate problem, larger and firmly attached, and they arrive almost exclusively on wild-caught or recently imported animals.

Why the enclosure is the real patient
The reptile mite passes through egg, larva, two nymphal stages and adult. Only two of those stages take blood. Everything else, including egg laying, happens away from the lizard.
That is the whole reason mite infestations feel impossible to shift. You spray or bathe the lizard, the mites on it die, and three days later there are more. They were never on the animal in the first place.
Mites lay in dry, dark, protected places. In a vivarium that means the substrate, the seam of silicone where the glass meets the base, the gap behind a rock background, the pores of cork bark and driftwood, the underside of a hide, and the joint where a lamp fitting meets the ceiling.
They also walk. A mite will cross a shelf between two enclosures, which is why a collection tends to go from one infested animal to all of them within weeks unless the room is treated as a unit.
Adults are dark and, when engorged with blood, red-brown. They are about the size of a poppy seed. Larvae are pale, six-legged and much harder to see, and they are the stage most often missed when a keeper decides the problem is solved.
Warm, humid enclosures speed the whole cycle up. A tropical setup at high humidity turns a small population into a visible one faster than a dry desert setup, but no setup is safe.

Woven hides, cork, driftwood and food bowls all offer sheltered surfaces. During an eradication these come out, and porous items are either discarded or heat or freeze treated.
What healthy skin and behaviour look like
Know the baseline before you need it. A settled lizard basks under its heat source for long, still periods, then moves to cooler areas, then returns. It uses the water bowl to drink and, in some species, to soak briefly around a shed.
Healthy scales are even in colour, with no white powdery deposits between them and no dark specks in the crevices. Look particularly at the pale skin of the gular fold under the chin, where a dark mite is obvious against pale tissue.
Eyes are clear and fully open, with a clean rim. The ear opening, which on most lizards is a visible depression on the side of the head, is clean and dry.
Shedding comes off in reasonably large pieces on most species, over a few days, with the toes and tail tip clearing last. Ragged, patchy, repeated shedding is a change worth investigating.
A normal soak is occasional and brief. A lizard that sits in water for hours, day after day, has a reason, and mites are one of the common ones.
Where mites hide on a lizard
Mites choose sites where the skin is thin, the scales are small, and a feeding parasite is sheltered from rubbing.
The eye.
Look at the rim of the eyelid and the fold of skin at the corner. On species with eyelids this is a favourite site, and a ring of dark specks around the eye is close to diagnostic.
The ear opening.
The tympanic membrane sits in a recess with a lip of skin around it. Mites gather at the edge of that recess.
The gular fold and neck folds.
The loose skin under the chin and along the neck gives shelter and thin skin together. This is the highest-yield place to look on a bearded dragon or similar bodied lizard.
Axillae and groin.
Where the limbs meet the body, the skin folds and stays humid.
The vent.
The margin of the cloaca, and the folds just in front of it.
Between the toes and under the dorsal crest.
Both are missed on a quick look because they need the animal turned or the crest lifted gently with a fingertip.

The pale skin of the gular fold, the eyelid rim and the ear opening are the three places worth checking every single time you handle the animal.
Changes that mean act today
Constant soaking or rubbing.
A lizard trying to drown or scrape off parasites will sit in water, rub its head along a branch, or press its body against rough decor repeatedly.
Dark specks in the water bowl.
Mites that fall in cannot swim well. A film of black specks on the surface, or a scatter of them on the bottom, is one of the most reliable early findings.
White speckling on dark scales.
The dust of mite droppings and shed skins collects between scales and reads as a fine white or grey powder. It looks like the lizard has been dusted with something.
Patchy, retained shed.
Mites feeding under the old skin disrupt the shedding process. Retained shed then traps more mites, and the loop tightens.
Pale mouth and gums, lethargy, reluctance to bask.
This is anaemia from blood loss and it is the point where the problem has become dangerous. It matters far more in a hatchling or a small gecko than in a large adult, because the same number of mites represents a far larger fraction of total blood volume.
A new animal, a new piece of decor, or a visit to a show.
Mites travel on second-hand vivaria, on wood and rock, on feeder insect containers, and on your sleeve. If any of these happened recently and the signs started afterwards, the connection is real.
The look-alikes, and what separates them
Several conditions produce the same complaint of a dull, itchy, badly shedding lizard.
Retained shed alone.
Dull, adherent, papery skin, often worst on toes and tail. No moving specks. Improves with a correct humidity gradient and a humid hide. If mites are also present, the shed problem returns each cycle.
Fungal skin disease.
Discoloured, crusted, adherent lesions that spread and deepen, often yellow or brown, and that get worse over weeks despite good husbandry. Fungal disease damages tissue. Mites do not create crusts, they create irritation and specks.
Scale rot and bacterial dermatitis.
Usually starts on the belly scales in contact with damp substrate. Reddened, blistered or ulcerated scales. Wet, dirty substrate is the giveaway in the history.
Thermal burns.
Localised, sharply defined damage on the surface that touched a heat source. History of a heat mat or heat rock, and no parasites.
Normal pre-shed dullness and soaking.
Cyclical, brief, resolves with the shed. If the same behaviour is continuous for weeks, it is not the shed cycle.
The separating test is simple: put the animal on a sheet of white paper in bright light for a few minutes, then look at the paper. Moving specks mean mites. Nothing moving means look at the other four causes.
Ticks, and why they mean something different
Ticks are much larger than mites, visible as a grey, brown or bluish lump, and firmly attached with mouthparts embedded in the skin. They favour the same sheltered sites: around the ear, the eyelid, the vent, and the skin folds at the limbs.
A tick on a captive-bred lizard that has never been outdoors is unusual and points to contact with another animal or with imported stock. On a wild-caught or recently imported lizard, ticks are common and expected.
That matters for two reasons. Ticks can transmit blood-borne parasites and cause a local area of tissue death at the attachment site. And in several countries, exotic tick species arriving on imported reptiles are a regulated concern, because some of them can establish and affect livestock.
Removal technique matters. Grip the tick as close to the skin as possible with fine-tipped forceps and pull with slow, steady, straight traction. Do not twist, and do not apply heat, oil, alcohol or petroleum jelly first. Those methods make the tick regurgitate into the wound, which increases the chance of transmitting anything it carries.
If you are not confident, a vet will remove it in seconds and can check whether the mouthparts came away cleanly. Retained mouthparts cause a persistent inflammatory lump that is frequently mistaken for a tumour months later.
Keep the tick in a sealed container. Identification changes the advice, and in some regions the finding is reportable.
Getting rid of them
Treatment has two halves that must happen at the same time. Treating one and not the other is the reason this problem drags on for months in so many collections.
The animal.
Product choice belongs with a vet who treats reptiles. Very few acaricides are licensed for reptiles anywhere, availability differs enormously by country, and the safe products in one region are unobtainable in another. What a vet needs from you is the species, an accurate current weight, the number of animals involved, and an honest list of everything already applied.
That last point is not a formality. Owners frequently present an animal that has already been sprayed with a dog product, dipped in a household solution, or housed with an insecticidal strip, and the resulting toxicity is a separate emergency layered on top of the mites.
One rule is absolute. Ivermectin is used by exotics vets for mites in some species, and it is fatal to tortoises and turtles. If you keep chelonians as well as lizards, tell the vet, and never let treated equipment, tongs, water bowls or hands move from one to the other without cleaning.
The enclosure.
Strip it completely. Substrate goes in a sealed bag and out of the house, not in an indoor bin.
Move the lizard to a clean, simple quarantine setup: a smooth-sided container, paper towel or plain paper substrate, a paper-based hide that can be thrown away daily, a shallow water bowl, and the correct heat gradient and UVB maintained. Paper is not enrichment, and this is not permanent, but during eradication you need to be able to see a mite the moment it appears and to replace every surface daily.
Porous decor is the hard decision. Cork bark, driftwood, woven hides and rock backgrounds hold eggs in pores you cannot reach. Either discard them, or heat treat or freeze treat them thoroughly and quarantine them away from animals for long enough to be sure. Anything soft or woven is usually cheaper to replace than to salvage.
Silicone seams need direct attention. Run a treatment along every joint, and along the runners of sliding glass doors, which are a classic reservoir.
Treat the room, not just the box. Wipe down shelving, vacuum the floor and discard the bag, and wash any fabric near the enclosure on a hot cycle.
Repeat, and keep repeating.
Most treatments do not kill eggs. This is the single point that decides success or failure. A treatment that appears to work, followed by a return two weeks later, is not a failed product. It is eggs hatching on schedule.
The rule of thumb in common use among keepers and exotics practices is to keep the quarantine setup and the treatment cycle going until you have seen no mites at all across several consecutive inspection intervals, and through at least one complete shed, before rebuilding the decorated enclosure.
Treat every animal in the room at once.
An untreated animal two shelves away reseeds everything. If you keep a collection, they are one epidemiological unit.
The routine that catches problems early
Mites are far easier to catch in the first week than in the fourth. The weekly white-paper wipe takes under a minute and finds them before the animal is anaemic.
What never to do
Do not put an insecticidal pest strip in or near a vivarium. It was once common advice and it has poisoned a great many reptiles in a closed, heated space they cannot escape.
Do not use dog or cat flea products, collars or spot-ons on a lizard or in its enclosure. Dosing and safety data do not transfer between a mammal and an ectotherm, and several of these products are dangerous to reptiles at any dose.
Do not drown mites by keeping the lizard submerged. Mites can survive submersion, the lizard cannot, and prolonged forced soaking causes its own problems including skin maceration and, in some species, dangerous water intake.
Do not treat only the visible animal and put it straight back into the same decorated enclosure. This is the most common mistake and it guarantees a relapse.
Do not skip the second and third treatment rounds because the lizard looks better. It looks better because the feeding adults are gone. The eggs are not.
Do not assume a mite-free look after a single inspection means clear. Larvae are pale and small, and an early population is easy to miss.

During eradication the lizard lives on disposable substrate in a simple setup with the correct heat and UVB maintained. It is temporary, and it makes a single mite visible immediately.

When to get help
Contact a veterinarian experienced with reptiles for any of these:
- A lizard that is lethargic, reluctant to bask, or has pale gums and mouth tissue
- A hatchling or small species with a visible mite burden, where blood loss is proportionally far greater
- Any tick, especially on a wild-caught or imported animal
- Skin that is crusted, ulcerated or discoloured rather than simply irritated, which points to a fungal or bacterial problem alongside or instead of mites
- Any animal that has already been treated with a product not intended for reptiles
- An infestation that returns after a full course of treatment, which usually means an untreated reservoir somewhere in the room
Bring these to the appointment: the species and an accurate weight, how long the signs have been present, what the enclosure is made of and what substrate and decor it contains, what was added to the collection recently and from where, everything already applied to the animal or the enclosure with the packaging if you still have it, a sealed sample of the parasite if you can collect one on clear tape, and whether any chelonians live in the same house.
That last item changes the drug choice, and it is the piece owners most often forget to mention.
