A tail lost this way is a significant injury with a lasting energy cost, and in some species it never regrows properly. Why lighting and diet come before the leg
Reptiles need ultraviolet B light to make vitamin D in the skin, and vitamin D to absorb calcium from the gut. Remove any link in that chain and the body starts taking calcium from the skeleton instead.
The result is bone that bends and breaks under normal loads. Owners see it as a limp, a wobble, bowed legs, or a lizard that has stopped climbing.
This is why the first questions are about the lamp and the food bowl. A fracture caused by weak bone will not be fixed by rest, and it will recur while the underlying deficiency continues.
Three practical failures cause most cases. The UVB bulb is past its useful output even though it still lights up. It sits behind glass or too far away. Or the diet supplies phosphorus without matching calcium, which is common in insect-based diets that are not dusted or gut loaded.
Single-limb problems are different. Falls, cagemate bites, limbs caught in decor, and retained shed all cause local injury in an otherwise healthy animal.
What normal movement looks like

Check every toe after each shed, using good light and magnification if needed
Watch the lizard move across a flat surface without picking it up. Give it time to settle first.
A healthy lizard lifts its body clear of the ground when it walks, rather than dragging the belly, and places all four feet evenly.
Limbs are straight. Bowing of the forelimbs or hind limbs is a classic sign of demineralised bone.
The jaw is firm and symmetrical, and the animal can close its mouth fully.
Toes are complete and the same colour as the surrounding skin, with no rings of old skin at the joints.
Climbing species should still be climbing. A gecko that has stopped using the height in its enclosure is telling you something before any limp appears.
Changes that mean act today
Weakness or wobbliness across several limbs.
This pattern is systemic. Metabolic bone disease is the most common cause in captive lizards, and it is progressive.

Post-shed toe checks and a bulb replacement diary between them prevent a large share of the lameness cases that reach reptile vets.
What never to do

A healthy lizard carries its weight on its legs, with the belly clear of the substrate
Do not flex, pull, or manipulate a limb to locate the injury. Weakened bone fractures easily and the handling causes pain.
Do not restrain by the tail.
Do not give calcium supplements at your own chosen amount to fix a suspected deficiency. Over-supplementation causes its own problems, and the correct correction depends on the diagnosis.
Do not use human painkillers or antiseptics.
Do not assume a lizard that still eats is fine. Reptiles conceal illness and continue feeding well into serious disease.
Do not leave a suspected fracture to heal on its own. Reptile bone heals slowly and badly aligned, which permanently changes how the animal moves.
