Lizard hydration: the species that ignore a water bowl, and how to read the urates
Many dehydrated lizards live in enclosures with a full water bowl, because chameleons and arboreal geckos do not drink standing water. Quick answer
Most dehydrated pet lizards live in enclosures that contain a full water bowl. The bowl is not the problem. The problem is that a large number of lizard species do not recognise still water as something to drink, and their owners never find out.
The second half of the answer is that hydration in reptiles is read from the urates, not from whether you saw the animal drink. Firm, chalky, yellow urates are the earliest reliable sign that a lizard is running dry.
For many lizards, most of the day's water arrives in food rather than from a bowl.

How lizards actually get and lose water
Water arrives by three routes. The animal drinks. It eats food containing water, which for an insectivore or a leaf-eater is most of the meal. And it produces a small amount of metabolic water as a by-product of using food for energy.
Water leaves by three routes as well. Evaporation from the respiratory tract, which is the largest loss and rises steeply with a hot basking zone and dry air. Loss across the skin, which is much lower than in a mammal but varies enormously between a desert lizard and a rainforest gecko. And excretion.
Excretion is where reptiles differ most from mammals, and it is worth understanding because it gives you the diagnostic tool.
A mammal converts waste nitrogen to urea, dissolves it in water, and urinates it away. That costs water. A reptile converts waste nitrogen to uric acid, which is almost insoluble, and excretes it as a paste. That costs very little water.
The consequence is that the urate portion of a lizard's droppings is a direct readout of hydration status. A well hydrated animal passes a soft, moist, white or off-white urate. As the animal dries out, the urate becomes firmer, chalkier, then yellow, then orange and gritty.
There is a limit to this system. If uric acid production outruns the ability to excrete it, usually because there is not enough water or because the kidneys are damaged, crystals deposit in joints and around internal organs. That is gout, it is painful, and it is not reversible. This is the reason chronic mild dehydration matters even when the animal seems fine.
Which lizards drink from what
This is the section that decides whether your husbandry works, and it is entirely species dependent.
Chameleons.
Veiled, panther and related species drink moving droplets from leaves and branches. They generally ignore a bowl of standing water completely, and a chameleon can dehydrate to the point of kidney damage in an enclosure with a full bowl in it.
They need water delivered as droplets, for long enough for the animal to notice, orient, and drink. A brief spray is not enough. A dripper running onto foliage, or a misting session that lasts several minutes, gives the animal time to respond. Watch for the animal actively licking droplets, because that is your confirmation the system is working.
Arboreal geckos.
Crested, gargoyle, day geckos and similar species lick droplets from glass and from leaves. They may use a small dish, but droplets are what they reliably respond to.
Leopard geckos and other terrestrial desert geckos.
These do use a water bowl, and it should always be available. The mistake with these species runs the other way: owners mist heavily to help with shedding, raise the enclosure humidity across the board, and cause respiratory disease. What these animals need instead is a humid hide, a small enclosed box with damp substrate that the animal enters by choice, leaving the rest of the enclosure dry.
Bearded dragons and similar terrestrial agamids.
Variable. Many will drink from a shallow dish, especially if the water moves. Many take most of their water from greens, which are largely water by weight. Some never appear to drink at all, and are perfectly hydrated because of what they eat.
Skinks.
Most use a bowl readily, and many will soak in one if it is large enough.
Monitors and tegus.
Large, active, and generally happy to drink and soak. They need a water container big enough to get into, which brings its own humidity and hygiene management.
Herbivorous desert species such as uromastyx.
These obtain water largely from plant material and are adapted to very dry air. Persistent high humidity is a genuine hazard for them, and heavy misting is the wrong intervention.

Greens are mostly water. For a bearded dragon, a well-eaten salad does more for hydration than a bowl the animal never approaches.
Reading dehydration on the animal
Skin turgor.
Gently pinch a fold of skin over the flank or the side of the body and release it. In a hydrated lizard it flattens immediately. In a dehydrated one it stays tented for a moment or longer. This is easier to judge in species with looser skin and harder in heavily scaled or very small animals, so it is one input rather than the whole answer.
Eyes.
Sunken eyes are a reliable and fairly late sign. In geckos with large eyes it is obvious. Compare against photographs of the same animal when it was well, which is why it is worth keeping some.
Skin folds.
Loose, wrinkled skin around the neck, in front of the hips and at the base of the tail. Distinguish this from the normal loose skin of a recently thin animal, and from the fat pad changes of weight loss.
Mouth.
Saliva should be thin and clear. Thick, stringy or tacky mucus in the mouth is a dehydration sign, and it is one a reptile vet will check.
Shedding.
Repeated retained shed, particularly rings of stuck skin on toes and around the tail tip, points to a combined humidity and hydration problem. In geckos this can cost toes.
Behaviour.
Reduced appetite, lethargy, and a lizard spending unusual amounts of time in the cool end. None of these are specific, but combined with urate changes they build the picture.
Weight.
A digital scale used weekly picks up water loss that the eye does not. Sudden weight change over days is fluid, not tissue.
Getting water into a lizard that needs it
Match the delivery to the species first. Adding a bigger bowl for a chameleon does nothing. Adding a long dripper session does.
Increase water content in food. Well-hydrated insects, offered soon after being gut loaded on moisture-rich vegetables, deliver water inside the meal. For omnivores and herbivores, offering greens rinsed and still damp adds water without raising ambient humidity for long.
Shallow warm soaks, when indicated.
For a lizard showing dehydration signs, a shallow soak in a container of comfortably warm water can help, and many lizards will drink during one. The rules are firm: water no deeper than the point where the animal can hold its head clear without effort, water warm rather than hot, the container escape-proof, and the animal never left unattended. Some lizards will also defecate during a soak, which is useful and normal, and the container should be cleaned properly afterwards.
Soaking is a response to a problem, not a routine to impose on every species. Repeated forced soaking of an animal that finds it stressful is counterproductive.
Humid hides rather than blanket humidity.
For any species where you are tempted to raise humidity for shedding, use a humid hide instead. It gives the animal the moist microclimate it needs and leaves the rest of the enclosure at the humidity the species requires.
Check the heat before you blame the water.
A basking surface that is too hot, or an enclosure with no proper cool end, drives respiratory water loss and pushes an animal toward dehydration no matter how much water is available. Measure both ends of the enclosure with an infrared thermometer for surfaces and a probe for air, and confirm the correct ranges for your species with a reptile veterinarian.

A weekly weight taken on the same scale is the cheapest early warning system for a hydration problem there is.
What changes by species, age and season
Hatchlings and juveniles have a larger surface area relative to their volume and much smaller reserves, so they dehydrate faster and show it later. They are also the animals most at risk of drowning in a water container that is too deep.
Gravid females have higher water demands and are more prone to problems if hydration is marginal.
Animals in shed need appropriate humidity for the species, delivered locally rather than globally.
Winter indoor heating is the most reliably missed factor. Central heating drops indoor humidity substantially, and an enclosure that was correct in summer can be far too dry in January without anything in the setup changing.
Brumating species have different needs again, and hydration during brumation should be planned with a reptile vet rather than improvised.
Sick or recovering animals cannot be assumed to drink. An animal that has stopped eating has also stopped taking in the water that came with its food.
What never to do
Do not syringe water into the mouth of a lizard that is resisting. Reptiles aspirate readily, and aspiration pneumonia is far harder to treat than dehydration.
Do not assume a full water bowl means a hydrated animal. For several common pet species it means almost nothing.
Do not mist heavily as a general practice. Sustained raised humidity in a desert species causes respiratory infection and skin disease.
Do not soak a lizard in deep water, in water that is hot rather than warm, or without watching it.
Do not use a heat rock as a substitute for a proper basking arrangement. It burns, and a burned animal loses fluid through the damaged skin.
Do not treat repeated retained shed as a cosmetic problem. Rings of stuck shed around toes and tail tips cut off blood supply.
Do not add electrolyte or sports drinks, or salt solutions, on your own judgement. If a lizard needs fluids beyond drinking and soaking, it needs veterinary fluids given properly.
Do not keep soaking an animal that is not improving. Two days without change means the problem is not simple water shortage.

When to get help
Contact a reptile veterinarian the same day for a lizard with sunken eyes, skin that stays tented, thick tacky mouth mucus, or that has stopped eating and drinking.
Contact one promptly for repeatedly yellow or gritty urates, swollen or painful joints, lameness in more than one limb, or an animal that is not improving after two days of appropriate water support.
Book an appointment for any lizard with recurrent retained shed, ongoing weight loss, or a history of chronic dehydration, because kidney damage and early gout are diagnosed on blood work and imaging rather than on appearance.

A hydrated lizard eats well, sheds cleanly and passes soft white urates. Those three things together are the whole test.
Bring photographs of recent droppings, the weekly weight record, your measured temperatures at the basking surface and the cool end, your measured enclosure humidity, an exact description of how water is offered and whether the animal has been seen using it, the diet including how the insects are kept, and the date and quality of the last shed. That is the history that separates a husbandry problem from kidney disease, and the two are treated very differently.
