Home-prepared lizard diets: calcium, phosphorus and oxalates
Reptiles do not eat cooked food, so the real question is how to balance fresh food at home. Most plants and nearly all feeder insects carry more phosphorus than calcium, and high-oxalate greens lock away the calcium that is there. This guide explains the calcium mechanism, oxalates and goitrogens, how feeding type changes everything from leopard gecko to iguana, why a lizard cannot digest without basking heat, and how to set a supplement schedule without guessing.

Quick answer
Reptiles do not eat cooked food, so the real question is how to put together a balanced fresh diet at home. That is entirely achievable, and for most pet lizards it is what they should be eating. The difficulty is that the two nutrients that most often go wrong, calcium and phosphorus, are invisible on the plate, and the vegetables that owners are most often told to feed are among the worst offenders.
Two mechanisms explain almost every home-diet failure in lizards. The first is that most plants and nearly all feeder insects contain more phosphorus than calcium, which is the wrong way round, and the body pulls calcium from the skeleton to compensate. The second is that some plants contain oxalates that bind calcium into a form the animal cannot absorb, so a diet that looks calcium-rich on paper delivers very little.
A home-prepared salad is only as good as its calcium to phosphorus balance and the heat the animal has to digest it with.
- Aim for a diet that supplies more calcium than phosphorus overall. The commonly recommended target for reptiles is roughly two parts calcium to one part phosphorus.
- Spinach, chard, beet greens and rhubarb are high in oxalates, which lock calcium away. Do not build a diet on them.
- Fruit is a treat, not a food group, for almost every pet lizard.
- Never feed a lizard that does not have proper basking heat available afterwards. Digestion in a reptile is temperature-driven.
- Never feed wild-caught insects, and never feed fireflies to any lizard.

Fireflies are lethal to bearded dragons and other lizards.
Fireflies and their relatives contain defensive steroids called lucibufagins, which are cardiotoxic. A single firefly has been enough to kill a bearded dragon. This is the clearest reason not to feed insects caught in a garden or attracted to a porch light, but it is not the only one: wild insects also carry parasites and may have been exposed to pesticides. Feeder insects should come from a captive-bred source raised on a known diet.

The calcium problem, properly explained
Bone is a calcium store as well as a structure. When the diet supplies less calcium than the body needs, hormonal signals pull calcium out of the skeleton to keep blood levels stable, because blood calcium controls nerve and muscle function and cannot be allowed to fall. Over months the skeleton softens and deforms. That is metabolic bone disease, and it is the commonest nutritional disease of pet lizards.
Phosphorus matters because it competes. A diet high in phosphorus relative to calcium increases the drive to mobilise calcium from bone even when total calcium intake looks adequate. This is why the ratio is quoted rather than a single figure, and why the commonly recommended target across reptile husbandry is roughly two parts calcium to one part phosphorus overall.
Most foods work against you. Crickets, mealworms, waxworms and similar feeders have several times more phosphorus than calcium. Many popular salad greens are close to neutral or phosphorus-favouring. Fruit is strongly phosphorus-favouring and adds sugar.
Two tools correct this. Gut-loading means feeding the insects a calcium-rich diet for a day or more before they are offered, so the insect itself carries a better balance. Dusting means coating the insect or the salad with a calcium supplement immediately before feeding. Both are needed for insectivores.
None of it works without vitamin D3. Calcium absorption from the gut depends on it, and most lizards make D3 in their skin under ultraviolet B light rather than obtaining it from food. A lizard with a perfect diet and no functional UVB source still develops metabolic bone disease. UVB output falls long before a bulb stops emitting visible light, so bulbs need replacing on schedule even when they look fine.
Oxalates, goitrogens and the greens that get recommended anyway
Oxalates.
Oxalic acid binds calcium in the gut to form calcium oxalate, which cannot be absorbed. High-oxalate plants therefore deliver much less usable calcium than their calcium content suggests, and they reduce the availability of calcium from everything eaten at the same time. In some animals oxalate also contributes to urinary tract stones.
The high-oxalate list worth knowing includes spinach, Swiss chard, beet greens, rhubarb, and to a lesser degree parsley and purslane. These are not poisons and an occasional small amount in a varied diet is not a crisis, but they should never be the base of a herbivorous lizard's diet.
Goitrogens.
Brassicas, the cabbage family, contain compounds that can interfere with iodine uptake and thyroid function when they make up a large share of the diet over a long period. Kale, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, bok choy and mustard greens are all in this group. Kale in particular is widely recommended as a calcium-rich green, which is true, and the sensible resolution is that it is a good component of a rotation rather than a staple fed alone every day.
Empty greens.
Iceberg lettuce is mostly water with very little else. It is not toxic and it is not useful. Feeding it fills the animal without feeding it.
Fruit.
High in sugar, usually phosphorus-favouring, and in hindgut-fermenting herbivores it feeds the wrong microbes and produces loose droppings. Treat it as an occasional item, with the exception of genuinely frugivorous species where a properly formulated diet is the better route.
Wild plants.
Weeds such as dandelion, plantain and clover are excellent for herbivorous lizards and are what many of them would eat in the wild, but only if you can identify them confidently and only from ground that has not been treated with herbicide, sprayed, or used by dogs.

Variety is the practical substitute for precision. A rotating base of several appropriate greens is more robust than one green chosen because a chart said it was high in calcium.
Feeding type changes everything
Obligate insectivores.
Leopard geckos and similar species eat whole prey and nothing else. Their calcium comes from gut-loading and dusting, and their diet fails when feeders are fed on bran and offered undusted. Variety of feeder species matters, because a single feeder type produces a single nutrient profile.
Omnivores that change with age.
Bearded dragons are the classic case. Juveniles eat a large proportion of insects to fuel growth, and adults should shift substantially towards plants. An adult bearded dragon still fed like a juvenile becomes overweight, develops fatty liver disease, and is at higher risk of gout. Owners rarely make the shift because the animal prefers insects and will hold out for them.
Herbivores.
Green iguanas, uromastyx and similar species need plant fibre, and they ferment it in a large hindgut. They need coarse leaves, grasses, flowers and weeds rather than soft salad alone. Their specific danger is animal protein: dog food, cat food, monkey biscuit, beans, tofu and insects fed to a herbivorous lizard cause kidney damage and gout over time.
Frugivorous and nectar-feeding species.
Crested geckos and some day geckos do best on a complete formulated diet designed for them, with insects and fruit as extras rather than as the base. Building their diet out of supermarket fruit is a common and avoidable mistake.
Carnivorous lizards.
Monitors and tegus eat whole vertebrate prey and invertebrates. Whole prey is broadly balanced because it includes bone. Muscle meat alone is not, and a lizard fed on mince or chicken breast will develop metabolic bone disease.
Species identification therefore comes before any diet plan. If you are not certain which feeding group your lizard belongs to, that is the first question for a reptile vet, not the diet spreadsheet.
Heat is part of the diet
This is the mechanism most owners have never been told. Reptiles are ectotherms, and every enzyme in the digestive tract works at a rate set by body temperature. A lizard that eats and then cannot reach its preferred body temperature does not digest slowly; it may not digest at all. Food sits in the gut, ferments, and can cause serious illness.
The practical consequences are specific.
Feed during the part of the day when the basking site is fully up to temperature and the animal has hours of heat ahead of it, not last thing before lights out.
Do not feed a lizard whose enclosure has cooled, for example after a heater or thermostat failure, until the heat is restored.
Do not feed a lizard that is about to be transported to the vet or moved house, because the journey will be cool.
Do not feed during brumation in species that brumate, and follow species-specific advice on how to prepare for and come out of it.
If a lizard suddenly stops eating, check the temperature gradient with a reliable thermometer before you change the food. A cool enclosure is a far more common cause of appetite loss than fussiness.
Supplements without guessing
Supplements are where owners either do nothing or do too much, and both cause disease.
Calcium without D3 is used when the animal has good UVB provision, because the D3 comes from the light.
Calcium with D3 is used when UVB is absent or limited, and it needs care because vitamin D3 is fat-soluble and can accumulate to toxic levels.
A reptile multivitamin covers vitamin A and other micronutrients, generally on a much less frequent schedule than calcium.
Frequencies depend on the species, the age, whether the animal is growing or breeding, and the UVB setup. Those variables mean any single schedule quoted in an article will be wrong for a large share of readers. Ask a reptile vet to set the schedule for your animal and your lighting, write it down, and stick to it.
Two specific cautions are worth knowing. Vitamin A given as preformed retinol can be overdosed, producing skin sloughing and other signs, while some species convert plant-derived beta-carotene poorly and can become deficient on a diet that looks orange and healthy. And a lizard receiving both a D3-containing calcium powder and a D3-containing multivitamin at every feed is at real risk of oversupplementation.

Weigh the animal on a schedule and weigh the food. Guessing portions is how insectivores become obese and herbivores become underfed.
Practical preparation
Chop to a size the animal can swallow without difficulty, generally no wider than the space between its eyes for plant material.
Serve in a shallow dish rather than directly on the substrate, so the lizard does not ingest sand, bark or soil with each mouthful.
Offer plant food early in the day so the animal has the whole basking period to work on it, and remove uneaten fresh food before it spoils in a warm enclosure.
Wash all produce thoroughly. Pesticide residue matters more in an animal this small.
Rotate. A base of four or five appropriate greens rotated through the week is more robust than any single green chosen from a chart.
Weigh the lizard on a schedule, at the same point in its feeding cycle, and keep the numbers.
Never store dusted insects, because the powder falls off and the coating is uneven.
Keep a written record of what is fed, what is dusted with, and when. This is the single thing a reptile vet most often wishes an owner had.
What never to do
Do not feed avocado, rhubarb leaves, onion or garlic.
Do not feed wild-caught insects, and never fireflies.
Do not feed dog food, cat food, beans, tofu or other concentrated protein to a herbivorous lizard.
Do not build a diet around spinach, chard or beet greens.
Do not feed a lizard that cannot reach basking temperature.
Do not rely on a UVB bulb past its rated life because it still lights up.
Do not use human calcium tablets or supplements not formulated for reptiles.
Do not feed insects larger than the space between the lizard's eyes.
Do not give both a D3-containing calcium powder and a D3-containing multivitamin at every meal.
Do not assume a lizard eating enthusiastically is well fed. Enthusiastic eating of the wrong food is how metabolic bone disease and obesity happen.

When to get help
Go the same day for tremors, a soft or swollen jaw, a limb that will not bear weight, a lizard that cannot right itself, straining without passing anything, or a complete refusal to eat in an enclosure that is at the correct temperature.
Book within days for weight loss, persistent loose droppings, swollen eyelids or eye discharge, reluctance to climb, or any change in posture or gait.
Book a routine appointment before you commit to a home-prepared diet, particularly for a herbivorous species, a growing animal, or a female that lays eggs, and take the plan with you.

Expect a reptile vet to want to examine the jaw and long bones, and to consider imaging and blood calcium if metabolic bone disease is a possibility.
