Why the cool end is the thing that fails
A lizard controls its temperature behaviourally. It moves into the heat to warm up and out of it to cool down, and this shuttling continues all day.
That system works only if the enclosure offers a real range. If the whole vivarium sits at the basking temperature, the animal can shuttle all it likes and nothing changes.
This is why heat stress cases so often trace back to an enclosure that is too small, a room that has warmed up, or a thermostat probe in the wrong position rather than a lamp being too powerful.
The absence of an effective cooling mechanism is what makes it dangerous. Lizards have no sweat glands. Gaping helps a little by evaporating moisture from the mouth, and some species flatten against cool surfaces, but neither can keep pace with a rising ambient temperature.
Dehydration makes all of this worse, because evaporative losses from the mouth and skin cannot be replaced.
What normal thermoregulation looks like

When to get help
Contact a reptile-experienced veterinarian immediately for a lizard that is unresponsive, twitching, unable to right itself, or flat and unmoving after a hot spell.
Contact them the same day for persistent gaping away from the basking site, marked colour change with lethargy, or refusal to eat following an overheating episode.
Book a check after any known overheating event, even if the animal appears to have recovered, because internal damage is not always visible.
