Lizard gut loading and dusting feeder insects

Feeder insects carry far more phosphorus than calcium, which is the wrong way round for a reptile skeleton. This covers what to feed the insects and for how long, why gut loading and calcium dusting are two separate jobs, which feeders to rotate, and the early signs of metabolic bone disease.

Quick answer

Gut loading is feeding the insects before you feed them to the lizard. An insect that has spent a day or two eating a calcium-rich, vitamin-rich diet arrives in the lizard carrying that diet inside it. An insect straight out of a shop tub arrives carrying bran, cardboard and very little else.

It is one of two separate jobs, and owners routinely do one and think they have done both. Gut loading changes what is inside the insect. Dusting changes what is on the outside of it. Insectivorous lizards need both, because no commonly used feeder insect has an acceptable calcium to phosphorus ratio on its own.

The same dark leafy greens that go in the lizard's bowl are the core of a good gut-load bin. Nothing here is exotic or expensive.

  • Almost every feeder insect contains far more phosphorus than calcium, which is the wrong way round for a reptile.
  • Excess phosphorus blocks calcium use, which is the road to metabolic bone disease.
  • Gut load for a day or two before feeding, then use the insects promptly. An insect empties its gut quickly.

Never feed wild-caught fireflies, or any insect that glows, to a bearded dragon or other lizard.

Fireflies contain defensive compounds that are toxic to reptiles, and deaths have followed the ingestion of a single insect. This is not a dose-dependent caution to manage carefully. It is an absolute exclusion.

Wild-caught insects in general carry pesticide residue, parasites and unknown identity. Nothing they add is worth the risk when captive-bred feeders are available.

Why the ratio is the whole problem

A reptile builds and maintains bone from calcium, and it cannot use calcium properly when phosphorus is in excess. The two minerals are absorbed and regulated together, and a diet weighted toward phosphorus effectively withholds calcium regardless of how much calcium is present in total.

Insects are built the wrong way round for this. Their structure is chitin rather than bone, so they carry very little calcium and comparatively a lot of phosphorus. A cricket, a mealworm, a superworm and a waxworm are all inverted relative to what a lizard needs.

When the ratio stays wrong for long enough, the body takes calcium from the only large store it has, which is the skeleton. That is nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism, and the visible end of it is metabolic bone disease: a rubbery jaw, bowed and swollen limbs, a kinked spine, spontaneous fractures, tremors and eventually an animal that cannot lift itself off the substrate.

Vitamin D3 sits on top of this. Without it, dietary calcium is not absorbed at all, so a perfectly balanced diet still fails. Most diurnal basking lizards make D3 in the skin from UVB light, which is why UVB provision and calcium nutrition are the same conversation rather than two separate ones. Species differ enormously in how much UVB they need, and getting more D3 into an animal is not automatically better, because excess D3 causes calcium to be deposited in soft tissue including the kidneys.

Gut loading fixes part of the ratio by putting calcium-rich plant material inside the insect. Dusting fixes the rest by coating the outside. Neither is sufficient alone, which is why the routine has two halves.

What a good gut load bin contains

Dark leafy greens with a favourable calcium content.

Collard greens, mustard greens, turnip greens, dandelion greens and kale are the workhorses. They are cheap, they are what you are probably already buying for an omnivorous lizard, and they are what makes gut loading worth doing.

Squash, sweet potato and carrot in smaller amounts.

These add moisture and carotenoids. Keep them a minority of the bin so the calcium-rich greens stay dominant.

A commercial gut-load formulation if you prefer.

Products designed for the purpose are formulated to raise calcium in the insect. They work, they save time, and they are a reasonable choice. Read what they are for, because insect maintenance diets and gut-load diets are different products.

A safe water source that insects cannot drown in.

Water gel, water crystals, or moisture from the vegetables. An open dish of water in a cricket tub becomes a dish of dead crickets.

Nothing high in oxalate.

Spinach, beet greens, chard and rhubarb bind calcium and work directly against the point of the exercise. Leave them out.

The schedule that actually works

Buy insects and move them straight into the gut-load bin.

Do not feed from the shop tub. Transfer them on arrival into a ventilated container with the gut-load food, a hide of egg carton or cardboard, and a moisture source.

Give them 24 to 48 hours to eat.

That is long enough to fill the gut and short enough that you are not maintaining a colony. Keep the bin at a sensible room temperature and out of direct sun.

Feed the lizard from the loaded bin, not from storage.

Insects that have been sitting in a plain tub for several days after loading have already passed the gut contents you paid for. If you are keeping insects for a week or more, top up the gut-load food continuously rather than loading once.

Dust at the point of feeding.

Put the insects you are about to offer into a small container or bag, add a light amount of calcium powder, and shake gently until they are lightly coated. The aim is a dusting, not a snowball. Heavy coating is refused, wiped off by the insect within minutes, and can irritate the eyes and mouth.

Which supplement, and how often, is a species question.

Calcium without D3, calcium with D3, and a broader multivitamin are three different products with three different frequencies, and the correct pattern depends on the species, the age, whether the animal is breeding, and above all whether it has adequate UVB. Ask a vet experienced with reptiles to set the schedule for your specific animal rather than copying one from a forum. Getting this wrong in either direction causes disease.

Offer, watch, and remove what is not eaten.

Loose crickets in an enclosure overnight will chew on a resting lizard. Remove uneaten insects after the feed. Mealworms and roaches burrow, so a feeding dish the lizard can reach into makes both offering and removal easier.

Choosing feeder insects

Crickets and dubia roaches are the practical staples for most insectivorous lizards. They gut load well, they are active enough to trigger a feeding response, and they are widely available.

Black soldier fly larvae, sold as calciworms or phoenix worms, are the one common feeder with a naturally favourable calcium to phosphorus ratio. They are a useful part of a varied diet, and they do not gut load in the same way because they are usually fed as-is.

Silkworms and hornworms are soft-bodied and high in moisture, which makes them useful for a dehydrated or convalescent animal, and both are typically low in fat.

Mealworms and superworms are convenient and heavily chitinous, and superworms in particular are high in fat. They work as part of a varied diet rather than as the whole of one.

Waxworms and butterworms are fat. Treat them as an occasional item, not a staple, for the same reason you would not build a diet around cream.

Variety is not decoration. Different feeders differ in fat, moisture, chitin and mineral content, and rotating them evens out the gaps that any single feeder leaves.

Changes that mean act today

Fine tremors, twitching, or jerky, uncoordinated movement.

This can be low blood calcium and it needs a reptile vet the same day.

A soft, rubbery, swollen or shortened lower jaw, or a mouth that will not close properly.

The jaw is often where metabolic bone disease shows first, because it is thin bone under constant use.

Bowed limbs, swelling along the long bones, a kinked spine or tail.

Structural changes mean the disease is established. Handle the animal as little as possible, because affected bone fractures under normal handling.

Reluctance or inability to lift the body off the substrate.

An animal dragging itself rather than walking with the body raised is weak, painful, or both.

Sudden refusal of insects it previously ate.

Not always nutritional, but always worth investigating, because mouth pain, gut problems and incorrect enclosure temperatures all present this way.

The routine that catches problems early

Weigh the lizard on a gram scale at a regular interval and record it. Weight change is visible in numbers long before it is visible in the enclosure.

Watch it move across the enclosure once a week with the specific question: is it lifting its body clear of the floor, and are all four limbs working evenly.

Look at the jaw line and the limbs in good light. You are checking for symmetry and for any swelling that was not there before.

Check the UVB source and its age. Fluorescent UVB output falls long before the lamp stops emitting visible light, so lamps are replaced on a schedule, not when they die. Follow the manufacturer's replacement interval for the exact lamp you have.

Keep the insect bin clean. Dead insects, mould and a damp bottom make the whole feeding chain a hygiene risk, and reptiles and their feeders both carry salmonella.

What never to do

Never feed wild-caught insects, and never feed fireflies to any lizard.

Never rely on gut loading alone and skip the calcium supplement. The ratio is too far off to fix from the inside only.

Never rely on dusting alone either. An insect that has eaten nothing useful is a container of chitin and phosphorus with powder on it.

Do not add D3 or multivitamin supplements on your own initiative on top of a schedule your vet has set. Hypervitaminosis D causes mineral deposits in soft tissue and is difficult to reverse.

Do not leave crickets loose in the enclosure overnight.

Do not use a dish of open water in the insect bin.

Do not feed insects to a herbivorous lizard such as a green iguana or uromastyx because they will eat them. They should not be part of that diet.

Do not treat a suspected metabolic bone disease case at home with extra calcium powder. It needs diagnosis, imaging in many cases, and often injectable treatment and pain relief.

Is gut loading the same as dusting?
No, and they do different jobs. Gut loading changes the insect's internal contents by feeding it well for a day or two beforehand. Dusting coats the outside of the insect with a calcium or vitamin powder immediately before it is offered. Insectivorous lizards need both, because the insect's own body composition is phosphorus-heavy in a way neither method fully fixes alone.
How long does a gut load last inside the insect?
Not long. Insects pass gut contents quickly, so the benefit fades over days rather than weeks. Feed from the loaded bin, and if you keep insects for longer, keep the gut-load food in front of them continuously instead of loading once and storing.
My lizard refuses dusted insects. What now?
Use less powder rather than none. A light dusting is usually accepted where a thick coating is not. You can also dust in a bag, which distributes the powder more evenly than a dish. If refusal continues, raise it with a reptile vet rather than quietly dropping supplementation, because that is how metabolic bone disease starts.
Do I still need to supplement if the lizard has UVB?
Usually yes, but differently. Adequate UVB lets the animal make its own vitamin D3, which changes how much dietary D3 is appropriate, and it does not change the need for calcium itself. The exact combination depends on species, age, UVB output and lamp age, so it is a question for a vet experienced with reptiles rather than a general rule.

When to get help

See a veterinarian experienced with reptiles promptly for tremors, jaw changes, limb swelling, spinal or tail deformity, weakness, or an inability to lift the body off the ground. Metabolic bone disease is treatable and it is far more treatable early.

Book a routine appointment to have the supplement schedule and UVB setup reviewed when you get a new animal, when it changes life stage, and after any change of enclosure or lighting.
