Lizard food labels: what the pack actually tells you, and what it does not
Reptile food carries no regulated definition of 'complete', so the pack is a set of clues rather than an answer. This guide shows how to convert every product to a dry-matter basis before comparing, why crude protein flatters insect products, how to read calcium and phosphorus as a ratio across the whole diet, what the ingredient order hides, why vitamin D3 on a label does not replace UVB, and how storage in a warm reptile room quietly destroys the potency you paid for.

Quick answer
What ends up in the bowl is decided at the shelf. The pack is the only information most owners get, and it is written to sell rather than to inform.
There is no legally defined nutritional standard for reptile food in most of the world. The profiles that govern dog and cat food do not extend to lizards, so a reptile pellet, a tub of canned insects or a supplement can say "complete" without any authority ever having checked.
That does not make commercial products useless. It means the pack is a set of clues rather than an answer, and four numbers on the back are worth more than everything on the front.
- Read the guaranteed analysis, the ingredient order, the moisture figure and the calcium to phosphorus ratio. Ignore the photographs.
- Moisture changes everything. A canned insect at 70 percent water and a dried insect at 5 percent water cannot be compared until you convert both to a dry basis.
- Crude protein is calculated from nitrogen. Chitin in insect shell contains nitrogen and is barely digestible, so an insect product's protein figure flatters it.
- Vitamin D3 printed on a pack does not replace UVB, and oral D3 has a real ceiling above which it causes harm.
- Nothing on a lizard food label tells you digestibility, and no product carries feeding-trial evidence in the way pet food for dogs and cats can.

Why the label is weaker than you think
Pet food labelling for dogs and cats sits on decades of published nutrient requirements. Bodies in North America and Europe publish minimum and maximum levels for dozens of nutrients across life stages, and a product claiming completeness has to be formulated against them or tested in feeding trials.
None of that framework exists for pet reptiles. The published nutrient requirements for a bearded dragon, a leopard gecko or a crested gecko are far less complete than they are for a labrador, and where numbers exist they are largely extrapolated from other species or derived from studying what the animal eats in the wild.
So the manufacturer is not lying when they say complete. They are using a word that has no defined meaning in this category.
The practical consequence is that you cannot outsource the judgement. You have to read the composition yourself and decide whether it is plausible for the animal in front of you.
The second consequence is that the same pack often serves several species. A tub labelled for "reptiles" is designed for a shelf, not for a gecko.
The numbers that actually mean something
Moisture, and the conversion nobody does
Everything else on the panel is meaningless until you know the water content.
To compare two products, convert each to a dry-matter basis. Take the printed percentage, divide it by 100 minus the moisture percentage, and multiply by 100.
A canned insect product listing 10 percent protein at 70 percent moisture is 33 percent protein on a dry basis. A dried insect listing 45 percent protein at 5 percent moisture is 47 percent on a dry basis. The gap is real, but it is nothing like the four-fold difference the front of the packs suggest.
Do this once for the two products you are actually choosing between and it takes a minute.
Crude protein, and what crude means
Crude protein is not measured by finding protein. It is calculated from the nitrogen content of the sample and converted with a fixed factor.
That matters for insect-based products because chitin, the structural material in insect exoskeleton, contains nitrogen and is poorly digestible for most lizards. A dried mealworm product is genuinely high in nitrogen and considerably less high in usable amino acids.
Nothing on the pack corrects for this. It is a reason to prefer a variety of feeder types rather than a single dried insect as a staple, and a reason not to choose between two products on protein percentage alone.
Fat, and why it decides obesity
Fat carries roughly twice the energy of protein or carbohydrate, so the fat figure drives calorie density more than anything else on the panel.
This is where high-fat feeders earn their reputation. Waxworms, butterworms and, to a lesser extent, mealworms are fat-led, which is why animals fed on them gain weight and often refuse leaner food afterwards.
If a product's dry-basis fat figure is high and the animal is already heavy or already selective, that product is a training aid, not a staple.
Calcium and phosphorus, as a ratio
This is the single most useful thing on a reptile food label, and it is only useful when both numbers are printed.
Phosphorus competes with calcium for absorption. A diet that supplies more phosphorus than calcium drives the body to pull calcium out of bone to keep blood levels stable, and that process is the road to metabolic bone disease.
The rule of thumb in common use across reptile husbandry is that the overall diet should never fall below equal calcium and phosphorus, and is usually aimed somewhere around twice as much calcium as phosphorus.
Insects are the problem. Almost every commonly fed feeder insect has more phosphorus than calcium, which is exactly why dusting with a calcium supplement exists as a practice at all.
So when you read a label: if a pack of dried insects prints a ratio the wrong way round, that is expected and does not condemn the product. If a pack sold as a complete staple prints it the wrong way round, that is a contradiction worth walking away from.
Ash
Ash is what is left after everything organic is burned off, so it is a measure of total minerals. A high ash figure in a pellet usually means added calcium carbonate or a bone-derived ingredient.
It is not a bad sign in itself. It is a hint about where the calcium is coming from.

The whole toolkit: a scale, the pack, and the supplement tub. Weighing the food is what turns a label into a portion.
The ingredient list, read properly
Ingredients are listed by weight as they went into the batch, before processing.
That single rule explains most label tricks.
Water counts. An ingredient that arrives wet is heavy, so fresh vegetable or fresh insect at the top of a list may contribute far less dry material than a drier ingredient further down.
Splitting works. Listing several closely related ingredients separately keeps each one lower down the list than the single combined ingredient would have been. Read the list as groups rather than as individual lines.
Category names hide things. Broad terms such as "cereals", "derivatives of vegetable origin" or "vegetable protein extracts" are permitted in some regions and tell you nothing about the actual material or its consistency between batches.
Order is not the whole story. A tiny quantity of a mineral premix at the bottom of the list can matter more to the animal than the third ingredient. Read the additives section too.
For an insectivore, the question to ask is simple: how far down the list does the first insect ingredient appear? For a herbivore or omnivore, the equivalent question is whether the plant material is recognisable or has been reduced to extracts and by-products.
Claims that mean nothing
"Natural." Unregulated here. Chalk is natural.
"No artificial colours." Colour is added to reptile pellets to appeal to the owner, since it makes no difference to a lizard that hunts by movement. Its absence is neutral.
"With added vitamins." All of them have added vitamins. The question is which, how much, and how long they have been sitting in a warm shop.
"Recommended by breeders." Not evidence.
"Formulated by veterinarians." Possibly true and still not a nutrient profile. Ask which nutrient standard was used, and note that for most lizard species there is not one to use.
"High in protein." Meaningless until converted to a dry basis, and misleading for insect products for the chitin reason above.
Species mismatch, the most expensive mistake
Lizards kept as pets span three completely different digestive strategies, and packaging does not always make the distinction clear.
Insectivores such as leopard geckos and most day geckos need whole prey, appropriate dusting, and no plant staple at all. A "reptile salad" product does nothing for them.
Omnivores such as bearded dragons shift across their lives. A juvenile eats mostly insects and an adult eats mostly plants, and feeding an adult on a juvenile's insect-led ration is one of the standard routes to an overweight dragon with a fatty liver.
Herbivores such as green iguanas and uromastyx need plant material with a workable calcium to phosphorus balance and enough fibre for hindgut fermentation. Feeding them insect-based food damages the kidneys over time through excess protein.
Then there are nectar and fruit feeders such as crested geckos, where commercially prepared complete diets are genuinely the mainstream approach and are better validated than most reptile products. Even there, read the label: these are the products where moisture percentage and mixing ratio actually change the delivered nutrition.
The rule is that the species on the front of the pack has to match the species in the enclosure, and where it says only "reptile", assume it was designed for something else.
Supplements are food labels too
The tub of calcium powder is subject to all the same problems and one more.
Calcium with or without D3. Two different products, often in near-identical packaging, and mixing them up is common. Which one you need depends on the UVB provision and the species, and using D3-containing powder at every feed on top of good UVB risks oversupplying it.
D3 has a ceiling. Excess dietary D3 drives calcium absorption beyond what the animal can handle and deposits mineral in soft tissue including the kidneys and blood vessels. This is not a theoretical risk in reptiles and it is not reversible.
Vitamin A comes in two forms. Preformed vitamin A, which is usable directly, and beta-carotene, which the animal must convert. Some lizards convert it well and others convert it poorly, so a supplement listing only beta-carotene may not prevent a deficiency in a species that cannot make the conversion. Read which form is listed.
Multivitamins are not calcium. They are used far less often than calcium and stacking them daily is a real cause of harm.
Potency falls after opening. Buy the pack size you will finish, keep it sealed, cool and dry, and write the opening date on the lid.

Fresh food carries no panel at all, which is why a commercial component is worth reading carefully: it is the only part of the diet whose composition you can actually check.
Storage, which the label assumes and you control
The best-before date on a pack is for an unopened product in a cool, dry place. A reptile room is neither cool nor dry.
Fat in dried insects oxidises and goes rancid, and rancid fat destroys vitamin E in the product as it does so. The smell is the giveaway: a sharp, crayon-like or paint-like note where there should be a nutty one.
Dried insects and pellets left open also attract storage mites, which contaminate the food and can trigger skin problems in the animals eating it.
Decant into an airtight container, keep it out of the reptile room, buy small, and throw away anything that smells wrong regardless of the date.
The routine that turns a label into a diet
What never to do
Do not compare two products on the front-of-pack percentages without converting for moisture.
Do not treat vitamin D3 in a food or supplement as a substitute for UVB. The route matters, and oral D3 carries a toxicity risk that UVB-generated D3 does not, because the skin regulates its own production.
Do not feed a diet aimed at a different dietary group because the pack says reptile.
Do not choose the largest supplement tub for value. You are buying potency, and potency has a clock on it.
Do not add extra supplements on top of a fortified commercial diet without working out the total. Doubling up is how oversupplementation happens.
Do not use a high-fat feeder as a staple because the animal prefers it. Preference in lizards tracks fat and movement, not nutritional need.
Do not assume an expensive product is better formulated. Price in this category tracks branding closely and composition loosely.

When to get help
Talk to a reptile veterinarian if you see any of these, because they are the signs that a diet is failing rather than merely imperfect:
- Weight climbing steadily, fat pads over the head and at the base of the tail, or a tail that has become round in cross-section
- Weight falling despite normal intake
- A soft or rubbery jaw, a swollen lower jaw, tremors, or reluctance to bear weight
- Refusing everything except one high-fat feeder
- Straining, chalky material at the vent, or drinking and urinating more than usual
- Any change in droppings that lasts more than a few days
Bring these to the appointment:
- Photographs of every label you feed, front and back
- The supplement tubs themselves, with their opening dates
- A weight log
- How much of each item goes in, by weight, and how often
- The UVB lamp type, its distance from the basking site, and the date it was installed
That last item belongs in a nutrition conversation because calcium metabolism is a lighting problem as much as a feeding one. A perfect diet under a dead UVB lamp still produces metabolic bone disease, and a vet who is handed both sets of information can usually tell within minutes which side the problem is on.

The outcome you are aiming for: an alert animal at a stable weight, on a diet whose composition you can actually account for.
