Why the elimination diet does not transfer
In dogs and cats, adverse food reactions produce a recognisable picture, usually chronic itching with a characteristic distribution, sometimes with gut signs, and there is an accepted diagnostic method using a strictly controlled diet followed by challenge.
Three things make that possible: a well-described disease, a defined set of signs the clinician can measure, and complete diets that let a single protein source be isolated.
Reptiles have none of the three. Dietary hypersensitivity is not an established clinical entity in pet lizards. There is no defined presentation to look for. And a lizard's diet is not a single formulated food but a mixture of live insects, greens, supplements and a lighting regime that determines what the animal can absorb from any of it.
More importantly, the signs that prompt owners to suspect an allergy have far more likely explanations in a reptile, and those explanations are checkable.
Itching and skin change. Reptiles do not scratch the way an allergic mammal does. Flaky, patchy or dull skin in a lizard is shedding, humidity, hydration, thermal burns, mites or a bacterial or fungal skin infection.
Digestive upset. Parasites, protozoa, temperature too low for digestion, prey too large, ingested substrate, or a diet composition that is wrong for the species.
Appetite loss. Temperature, shedding, season, sexual maturity, mouth disease, respiratory infection, metabolic bone disease.
Swollen face or eyes. Hypovitaminosis A, an infection, an abscess, or in some species an aural abscess.
Each of those has a diagnostic path. None of them are addressed by removing a food.
What actually goes wrong with a lizard's diet
Calcium, phosphorus and metabolic bone disease.
The biggest one by a wide margin. Most feeder insects contain far more phosphorus than calcium, which is the reverse of what the animal needs, and calcium cannot be absorbed properly without vitamin D3, which most diurnal lizards make in their skin under UVB.
So metabolic bone disease is a three-part failure: insufficient dietary calcium, inadequate supplementation, and inadequate or expired UVB. Trembling, a rubbery or swollen jaw, bowed limbs, a kinked spine, an inability to lift the body and, in advanced cases, fractures and seizures.
This is what a lizard with a diet problem usually has, and it is preventable and treatable if caught early.
Oxalates.
Some greens contain oxalates that bind calcium and reduce its availability. Spinach is the standard example. This is a reason to keep such items occasional rather than staple, and to build a herbivorous diet from greens with favourable calcium to phosphorus ratios.
Goitrogens.
Brassicas and some other vegetables can interfere with thyroid function when they dominate a diet over a long period. Again, a variety argument, not an exclusion one.
Vitamin A.
Deficiency is common in insectivorous lizards fed unsupplemented feeders, and it damages the secretory tissues, producing swollen eyelids, blocked ducts and increased susceptibility to infection. It is also possible to over-supplement, and preformed vitamin A toxicity has its own presentation, which is why the choice of supplement and the schedule should follow veterinary or species-specific guidance rather than guesswork.
Fat, obesity and hepatic lipidosis.
Fatty feeder insects as a staple, an adult still eating a juvenile's diet, and free feeding produce obese lizards, and obesity leads to liver disease that is difficult to reverse.
Protein excess and gout.
Feeding a herbivorous species such as a green iguana or a uromastyx on animal protein, particularly alongside chronic dehydration, is associated with gout, where urate crystals deposit in joints and organs. It causes painful swollen joints and organ damage, and it is largely irreversible.
Impaction.
Mechanical rather than nutritional. Prey items too large for the animal, loose fine substrate taken in with food, or an enclosure too cool for the gut to move contents along. It presents as appetite loss, straining, a distended abdomen and sometimes hind limb weakness, and in a small lizard it is an emergency.
Parasites and protozoa.
Often mistaken for a food intolerance because the sign is loose droppings after eating. A faecal screen answers it, and cryptosporidiosis in leopard geckos in particular needs proper diagnosis rather than a diet trial.
Dehydration.
Underlies gout, urate problems, poor shedding and appetite loss, and is frequently blamed on food.

A weight log and a written record of what is actually eaten is more diagnostically useful than any elimination trial.
What to do instead
This is the sequence that actually finds the answer.
1. Check the lighting.
UVB lamp type, strength, distance, whether anything blocks it, and the date it was last replaced. Output falls long before the lamp stops emitting visible light.
2. Check the temperatures.
Basking surface temperature and cool end temperature with an infrared thermometer. Digestion, immune function and appetite all depend on this.
3. Check hydration.
Humidity for the species, water provided in the form the animal recognises, urate consistency, eye fullness, skin creasing.
4. Check supplementation.
What calcium product, what multivitamin, how often, and whether it matches the species and the UVB provision. Dusting insects immediately before feeding, and gut-loading feeders beforehand, both matter.
5. Check diet composition against the life stage.
Adult bearded dragons need a mostly plant diet. Juveniles do not. Herbivorous species must not be given animal protein. Insectivores need a varied feeder base, not one rich species.
6. Check the mechanics.
Prey item size against the animal, substrate against feeding method, and whether the animal is taking substrate in with its food.
7. Get a faecal parasite screen.
Cheap, quick, and it answers most digestive questions that get blamed on food.
8. See a reptile vet.
With the weight log, the temperature readings, the UVB date, the supplement schedule and the exact diet.

Offering food by tongs or in a dish rather than loose on substrate removes one of the commonest mechanical causes of gut trouble.

Body tapering with hip bones covered but palpable, a tail base that narrows smoothly, and no fat pads at the armpits.

Droppings formed, consistent, and passed on a predictable pattern.
Full round eyes, clear eyelids with no swelling or crusting.
Firm correctly shaped jaw, straight limbs, body lifted clear of the ground when walking.
Quiet breathing with the mouth closed, except when thermoregulating on the basking site.
Normal use of both ends of the temperature gradient.
There is no gum colour to check and no capillary refill time to count. Lizards do not have gums in the mammalian sense and reptiles have no usable capillary refill.
