Almost everything that goes wrong in a lizard's first year is an equipment failure: no thermostat, an expired UVB lamp, an enclosure outgrown by month six. This is the month by month setup, check and replacement calendar, with the lizard health checks that actually exist in a reptile.

Quick answer

Nearly everything that goes wrong in a lizard's first year is an equipment problem, not a lizard problem. The animal is cheap and the enclosure is not, and the failures that produce metabolic bone disease, thermal burns and impaction all trace back to a piece of kit that was skipped, undersized or never replaced.

This is a calendar of what the equipment has to do and when it needs attention. Prices vary far too much between countries, species and enclosure sizes for any figure here to be useful, so this deals in what you need and when, and you price it locally.

The enclosure is the purchase. The lizard is the cheap part, and buying the animal before the enclosure is running is the classic first-year mistake.

  • Build and run the enclosure before the lizard arrives, and confirm the temperatures hold for several days first.
  • Every heat source needs a thermostat. This is not optional equipment and it is the difference between a warm lizard and a burnt one.
  • UVB lamps lose output long before they stop producing visible light, so they are a scheduled replacement item, not a replace-when-it-dies item.
  • Budget for a first-year veterinary examination and a faecal parasite screen, and for an emergency fund.
  • The expensive part of year one is usually the enclosure upgrade, because juveniles are sold in setups that an adult of that species outgrows.

Never run a heat lamp, ceramic emitter, heat mat or heat cable without a thermostat.

An unregulated heat source runs at whatever the room lets it, and a lizard that is cold will sit on a burning surface because its heat-seeking behaviour overrides the pain. Thermal burns to the belly and to the underside of the tail are among the most common serious injuries in captive lizards, they are extremely slow to heal, and they are entirely preventable by a device that costs a fraction of the enclosure.

Before the animal arrives

This is the part people compress and it is the part that matters most.

The enclosure, sized for the adult where possible.

Find out what your species reaches as an adult and what enclosure it needs then. Buying twice is normal for some species and avoidable for others, but a plan beats a surprise.

A heat source appropriate to the species, and a thermostat to control it. Basking species need an overhead source producing a genuine basking surface; nocturnal species and some geckos are managed differently.

A UVB lamp of the correct type and strength for the species, at the correct distance, with the correct fitting and reflector. This is a specification, not a purchase: the wrong strength at the wrong distance behind the wrong mesh delivers nothing useful.

Measuring equipment. An infrared thermometer for surface temperatures, at least one digital probe thermometer for air temperature at each end, and a digital hygrometer for humid species. These are cheap and they are the only way to know anything.

Substrate appropriate to the species, chosen against impaction risk rather than appearance.

Hides at both ends of the gradient, so the animal never has to choose between feeling safe and being at the right temperature.

Furnishing: basking surface, climbing structure for arboreal and semi-arboreal species, a water dish, and cover.

Feeding equipment, including a way to keep and gut-load feeder insects for insectivores.

Supplements: a calcium powder and a multivitamin appropriate to the species and the UVB provision, used on the schedule your vet or species guide sets.

Then run it empty. Set it up, switch it on, and measure both ends across several days including overnight. Adjust until it holds. Only then bring the animal home.

The first-year calendar

Week one.

Do not handle beyond what is necessary. Confirm temperatures daily with the infrared thermometer. Log whether the animal eats, drinks, uses the basking site and passes droppings.

Book the first veterinary examination with a reptile-experienced vet, and bring a faecal sample for a parasite screen. Newly acquired lizards, particularly wild-caught or imported ones, commonly carry parasite burdens that are far easier to address early.

Month one.

Establish the weight record on a gram scale. Establish the shed record. Confirm the animal is using both ends of the gradient.

Review the substrate against how the animal actually feeds. If it is taking mouthfuls of loose substrate with its food, change the feeding method or the substrate before impaction becomes the lesson.

Months two and three.

Growth check. Juveniles of many species grow fast, and an enclosure or a basking arrangement that suited a hatchling may already be wrong.

Review supplement schedule against actual growth and against UVB provision.

Around month six.

Replace the UVB lamp, or on whatever schedule the manufacturer specifies for that lamp type. Write the replacement date directly on the fitting. This is the single most commonly missed item in reptile keeping, and metabolic bone disease is the result.

Check the enclosure size against the animal's current length. For fast-growing species this is often the point where the upgrade happens.

Months six to twelve.

Reassess diet composition. Several species shift as they mature: bearded dragons move from a heavily insectivorous juvenile diet toward a much more plant-based adult one, and continuing to feed a juvenile diet into adulthood contributes directly to obesity and hepatic lipidosis.

Watch for the first signs of sexual maturity, which brings behaviour changes, appetite changes and, in females, the possibility of egg laying whether or not a male is present. Egg laying requires a lay site, which is a piece of equipment most first-year keepers have not provided.

Month twelve.

Annual veterinary examination, with a repeat faecal screen.

Full equipment audit: thermostat still calibrated and probe still positioned correctly, UVB lamp date, thermometer batteries, enclosure seals and locks, worn or damaged furniture, and whether the enclosure is still the right size.

The ongoing items

These recur through the year and are the ones people forget when planning.

Electricity to run heating and lighting continuously. For a large enclosure this is a real and continuous cost.

Feeder insects, or fresh greens and vegetables, weekly.

Substrate replacement.

Calcium and multivitamin supplements.

UVB lamp replacements on schedule.

Bulb replacements when they fail.

Veterinary care, routine and unexpected.

Health checks that actually apply to a lizard

Included here because a first-year owner needs to know what to look at, and because most general pet advice gives the wrong list.

Body condition at the tail base and hips: a healthy lizard has a filled but not bulging tail base, and hip bones that are covered but palpable.

Complete sheds, coming away without retained rings on toes, tail tip or over the eyes.

Urates soft and pasty rather than hard and chalky.

Jaw and limbs firm and correctly shaped. A rubbery jaw, a swollen jawline, bowed limbs, a kinked spine or trembling are the signs of metabolic bone disease, and they mean the UVB, the calcium supplementation or both have failed.

Full round eyes, alert posture, normal use of the basking site.

Breathing quiet, mouth closed except when thermoregulating on the basking spot.

There is no gum colour check and no capillary refill time in a lizard. Lizards do not have gums in the mammalian sense and no reptile has a usable capillary refill. Any advice telling you to check either has been copied from dog and cat first aid and will not tell you anything about your animal.

What never to do

Do not run any heat source without a thermostat.

Do not rely on a stick-on dial thermometer or an analogue hygrometer.

Do not use a heat rock. They produce uncontrolled hot spots and cause burns.

Do not buy the lizard before the enclosure is running and verified.

Do not assume the UVB lamp is working because it is lit.

Do not put UVB behind glass or dense mesh unless the lamp was specified for it, because glass blocks the relevant wavelengths.

Do not feed a fast-growing juvenile diet to an adult of a species that becomes herbivorous.

Do not skip the initial veterinary check and parasite screen.

Do not use loose fine substrate with a species that feeds by lunging at prey on the ground, unless you feed in a separate container.

Do not judge a sick lizard by gum colour. There is nothing to see and you will lose time.

What does a lizard's first year actually cost?
It varies too widely by country, species and enclosure size for any number here to be honest. What is consistent is the shape of the spending: the enclosure, heating, thermostat, lighting and measuring equipment dominate the start, an enclosure upgrade is likely partway through for fast-growing species, and the recurring items are electricity, food, substrate, supplements and UVB replacements. Price the full adult setup locally before buying the animal, and add a veterinary reserve.
Can I skip UVB if I supplement with vitamin D3?
For most diurnal lizards this is a bad trade. Oral D3 can support some species, but it is easy to under-dose and possible to over-dose, and species differ substantially in how well they use it. UVB also has effects on behaviour and wellbeing beyond vitamin D synthesis. Discuss the specific species with a reptile vet rather than assuming a supplement replaces lighting.
How do I check whether my new lizard is healthy?
Use reptile measures: weight trend on a gram scale, body condition at the tail base and hips, complete sheds with nothing retained on toes or eye caps, soft pasty urates, a firm correctly shaped jaw and limbs, full round eyes, quiet breathing, and normal use of the basking site. There is no gum colour or capillary refill check in a reptile, so ignore any list that includes them. A veterinary examination with a faecal screen in the first weeks is the reliable answer.
My starter kit came with everything. Is that enough?
Check three things specifically. Whether there is a thermostat, since many kits do not include one. Whether the UVB lamp is the correct type and strength for your species rather than a generic low-output tube. And whether the enclosure matches the adult size of the animal. Those three are the common gaps, and each of them causes a preventable disease.

When to get help

Book a reptile-experienced veterinarian in the first weeks for an initial examination and a faecal parasite screen, and again at twelve months.

Go urgently for trembling, a soft or swollen jaw, bowed limbs, a kinked spine, an inability to lift the body off the ground, or seizures. These are metabolic bone disease and they are an equipment failure that has become a medical one.

Go urgently for a burn on the belly or the underside of the tail, for an animal that has stopped using the basking site, for straining with nothing passed, or for open-mouth breathing with noise or bubbles.
