Why zoning matters more for a reptile than for a mammal
A dog can leave a room. A cat can go up. A lizard in an enclosure has only the hides you provided, and it cannot increase the distance between itself and a predator.
Reptiles respond to a persistent predator presence by shutting down rather than by fleeing. They stop basking, stay in a hide, and stop eating. That looks like calm behaviour and is often mistaken for it.
The knock-on effect is thermal. A lizard that avoids its basking spot because a dog is lying next to the enclosure is not reaching its preferred body temperature. Digestion, immune function, and shedding all depend on that temperature being reached daily.
So the harm from poor zoning is usually not a dramatic attack. It is a slow decline that shows up weeks later as a lizard that will not eat and has a bad shed.
What good zoning looks like
Choose a room the other animals do not need to pass through. A spare room, a home office, or a bedroom works better than a living room or a hallway.
Position the enclosure so at least the back and one side are solid rather than clear glass. A lizard that can see the room from every angle has nowhere that feels visually safe.
Raise the enclosure off the floor. Floor-level enclosures put the lizard at exactly the height a dog investigates, and the vibration from footsteps carries.
Secure the top properly. Screen lids need weights or clips, and sliding glass doors need a lock. A cat's paw can move an unclipped screen far enough to get in.
Keep free-roam time and other pets completely separate. If the lizard comes out, the door is shut and the other animals are on the other side of it. There is no supervised version of this that is reliable.
Changes that mean act today
Refusing food after a household change.
A new cat, a new dog, or the enclosure moving into a busier room are all common triggers. Check temperatures first, then sightlines.
Hiding through the whole basking period.
A lizard that will not come out to bask is losing thermal ground every day. Something in the room is telling it to stay concealed.
Darkened colouration or a persistent flattened, low posture.
Many lizards darken when stressed or cold. Combined with reduced activity, this is a signal rather than a personality trait.

Weight is the most reliable early signal you have. Stress and thermal problems show up on the scale before they show up in behaviour.

Do not rely on supervision alone during free-roam time. Lizards are fast and low to the ground, and the gap between noticing and reaching is longer than you think.
Do not house two species together, even two lizards. Temperature, humidity, and dietary requirements differ, and pathogens carried harmlessly by one species can be serious in another.
Do not treat a bite or scratch at home with human antiseptic. Several are harmful to reptiles, and the wound needs to be assessed rather than sealed.
Do not add a second lizard because the first one looks lonely. Solitary reptiles do not experience loneliness in the way that behaviour suggests.

Book within the week for a lizard that has stopped eating, stopped basking, or lost weight after a household change that you have already corrected.
Bring the enclosure temperature and humidity readings, the weight record, the feeding history, a description of which other animals live in the home, and photographs of the enclosure in the room. The room layout often explains the case faster than examining the lizard does.
