Lizard Digging and Burrowing: What a Sudden Increase Means

Digging is thermoregulation, humidity seeking, security and nesting all at once, so a change in it points at something the enclosure is not providing. This guide covers the gravid female searching for a lay site, the temperature gradient problems that drive corner digging, humid hides, and the decor arrangements that turn a dug-out enclosure into a crush risk.

Quick answer

Digging is normal for most pet lizards. It is how they reach a cooler layer, a damper layer, or somewhere they cannot be seen, and a lizard that never digs is often one that has nothing worth digging in.

What matters is a change. A lizard that has started digging far more than usual, or that digs frantically in corners and cannot settle, is looking for something the enclosure is not providing. In a female, the thing she is looking for is very often somewhere to lay eggs.

Calm, purposeful digging that ends with the lizard settling into the hollow it made is normal. Frantic digging that never resolves is a search.

Many pet lizards, including bearded dragons, leopard geckos and chameleons, produce eggs without ever meeting a male. If a gravid female cannot find an acceptable nest site she may hold the eggs, and retained eggs lead to a life-threatening obstruction. Why lizards dig at all

Soil buffers. A few centimetres down, temperature swings less, humidity is higher, and nothing can see you. For a small ectotherm in an open landscape, that combination is worth the effort of digging.

Every function a lizard uses digging for is a version of that.

Thermoregulation.

A lizard too hot at the surface digs down into cooler substrate. A lizard too cold may dig into a spot warmed from above, or excavate a shallow scrape to press its belly against a warmer surface. Digging is a thermal tool before it is anything else.

Humidity.

Deeper substrate holds moisture. Species from arid environments still need a humid microclimate, particularly around a shed, and they get it underground rather than from ambient air.

Security.

Being under something is safer than being on top of it. A lizard with too few hides will make its own.

Foraging.

Insects burrow. A lizard digging after a feeding session is often hunting an escaped cricket, which is normal and is a good argument for feeding in a way you can supervise.

Nesting.

Females dig test holes, assess them, abandon them and dig again, sometimes for days, until they find a site with the right depth, moisture and firmness.

Knowing which of these you are looking at is most of the diagnosis, and the position, timing and quality of the digging tell you.

Nest seeking, and the lay box that prevents an emergency

This is the cause with the highest stakes and the one most often missed, because owners assume a female kept alone cannot be carrying eggs.

Many lizard species ovulate on a seasonal cycle regardless of whether a male is present. The eggs are infertile, but they are real, and the female's drive to lay them is identical.

What it looks like.

Restlessness that builds over days. Repeated digging in corners, under decor, and in any damp spot. Test holes that are dug and abandoned. Reduced appetite or complete refusal. A body that has become wider through the sides, sometimes with individual egg shapes visible or palpable low in the abdomen. Pacing and glass rubbing between digging bouts.

What she needs.

A lay box, offered as soon as you suspect it rather than after she is exhausted. In practice that is a container large enough for her to turn around in, filled deep enough that she can dig a chamber and cover herself, with a substrate that holds a tunnel without collapsing. Slightly damp is the usual requirement, since dry sand collapses and soaking wet substrate is rejected. A lid with an entrance hole makes it darker and more acceptable to many species.

Place it in the warm half but not directly under the basking lamp, and then leave her alone. A female repeatedly disturbed mid-dig will often abandon the site.

What to watch for.

Progress. A female who digs, lays and then emerges thinner and hungry has done what she needed. A female who digs for days, becomes lethargic, strains without producing, or suddenly stops trying is in trouble and needs a reptile vet the same day.

Afterwards.

Egg laying costs a great deal of calcium and body condition. Expect a thinner, hungry lizard, and expect to discuss calcium and diet with a vet, because repeated clutches are what drain a female over time.

Temperature: the most common husbandry cause

A lizard digging into the coolest available substrate, flattening itself into the hollow, and staying there is telling you the enclosure is too warm or the gradient is too shallow.

The only way to know is to measure. Use an infrared thermometer to map the actual surface temperatures at the basking spot, the middle, the cool end and inside each hide, and check the substrate temperature as well as the air. A digital probe placed at the animal's level gives the ambient figure. Stick-on dial thermometers are not accurate enough to make decisions with.

The opposite pattern also exists. A lizard that is too cool digs to find warmth, presses itself against warm surfaces, and becomes less active overall. In a species that brumates, digging plus reduced appetite as autumn arrives may be the start of a seasonal shutdown rather than a problem, and that needs a proper assessment of the animal's condition before it is allowed to proceed.

One specific hazard belongs here. A lizard that can dig down to a heat mat under the enclosure floor removes the substrate that was insulating it. Reptiles sense heat poorly on their bellies and thermal burns from under-tank heating are a recognised injury. Heat sources under an enclosure with loose substrate need a thermostat and enough depth that the animal cannot reach the hot surface.

Humidity, shedding and the humid hide

Digging that increases in the days before a shed is a search for moisture. The skin needs to be hydrated to separate cleanly, and a lizard in a dry enclosure will look for a damp layer to lie in.

A humid hide solves this directly. It is a closed container with an entrance, holding a moisture-retaining substrate such as damp sphagnum moss or coir, placed on the warm side. It stays damp rather than wet, and it needs checking and refreshing because a mouldy humid hide causes its own problems.

Leopard geckos in particular depend on this, and retained shed around the toes and over the eyes in this species is very often traced back to a missing or dried-out humid hide.

The reverse also occurs. A lizard from an arid environment kept in constantly damp substrate may dig to find somewhere dry, and prolonged contact with damp bedding causes skin problems.

Security, space and the substrate itself

A lizard with too few hiding places builds its own. Two hides is the usual minimum, one at each end of the temperature gradient, so the animal never has to choose between being warm and being hidden.

Enclosures placed in busy rooms, at floor level where people loom over them, or with clear glass on all four sides, produce animals that spend more time trying to get under something. Backing and siding the enclosure with an opaque covering usually helps more than adding another ornament.

Substrate depth matters as much as substrate type. A shallow scattering over a bare floor gives a digging species nowhere to go, and the result is digging at the corners, scratching at glass and, over time, damage to the nose and chin. Deep enough to make and hold a burrow, in a substrate appropriate to the species, is what stops that.

Choose the substrate for the species you actually keep. Arid species need something that holds a tunnel without being dusty. Tropical species need something that holds moisture without going sour. Loose particles are not automatically dangerous, but a lizard that is eating substrate rather than digging in it is showing a different problem and needs investigating.

Making the enclosure safe for a digger

Put heavy decor on the base, not on the substrate.

Rocks, slate, logs and ornaments should sit on the floor of the enclosure with the substrate filled in around them. A lizard that excavates under a heavy item can be crushed by it, and this is one of the more preventable causes of death in dug-out enclosures.

Secure anything stacked.

Vertical arrangements need fixing together or bracing against the wall of the enclosure.

Check the corners for gaps.

A digging lizard will find the seam under a false back or a gap behind a hide, and either get stuck or escape.

Watch the nose and chin.

Rostral abrasion is caused by repeated contact with surfaces that do not yield. Persistent redness, flattening or scabbing on the nose means the animal has been trying to get through something for a long time, and it needs both treatment and a change to the enclosure.

Supervise feeding.

Escaped insects in the substrate keep a lizard digging and, in the case of crickets left in overnight, can nibble a sleeping lizard.

What varies by species

Bearded dragons.

Dig readily and often. Gravid females dig with striking intensity and will excavate an entire enclosure. Also dig as part of the seasonal slowdown, which in this species is a common source of worry in autumn.

Leopard geckos.

Dig for humidity and for security. Digging in this species should send you to the humid hide first.

Uromastyx and other obligate burrowers.

Need substantial substrate depth as a basic requirement, not as enrichment. Digging in these species is not a problem to be solved.

Skinks.

Many are fossorial and spend most of their time under the surface. Not seeing the animal is normal.

Crested geckos and other arboreal species.

Spend their lives off the ground, so a crested gecko digging in the floor substrate is unusual and usually means a female looking for a lay site.

Chameleons.

Strictly arboreal, so a female descending to the floor and digging is a strong nesting signal and needs a lay bin provided immediately.

Do not remove the substrate to stop the digging. You remove the behaviour and keep the cause, and you create nose and chin injuries.

Do not disturb a female repeatedly while she is digging test holes. She may abandon the site and hold the eggs.

Do not stack rocks on top of substrate.

Do not assume a solitary female cannot be carrying eggs.

Do not treat a lizard that has dug itself under the substrate and stayed there as simply hiding, if it is also refusing food and losing weight.

My lizard digs the same corner every evening. Is that a problem?
Usually not, if it settles there and behaves normally otherwise. Many lizards choose a favourite retreat and re-excavate it daily. Look at what makes that corner attractive, because it is often the coolest or the most humid part of the enclosure, and if the rest of the enclosure had similar options the animal would use those too.
Do I need to provide a lay box even though my female has never met a male?
Yes, for any adult female of a species that reliably produces infertile eggs, and certainly as soon as nesting behaviour appears. The box costs very little and the alternative is a female who cannot find an acceptable site and holds the eggs, which is a genuine emergency. Providing it does not encourage egg laying, and its absence does not prevent it.
How deep should the substrate be?
Deep enough that the species can make a burrow that holds its shape, which varies enormously between an arboreal gecko and a uromastyx. The practical test is whether a hole the lizard digs stays open rather than collapsing, and whether the animal can get fully under the surface if it wants to. If the lizard is digging at the glass rather than into the substrate, it is not deep enough.
Is digging a sign of stress?
It can be, but it is not by default. Stress-related digging is repetitive, does not resolve into settling, often happens alongside glass rubbing and pacing, and tends to occur near the enclosure walls rather than in a chosen spot. Purposeful digging that ends with a resting lizard is the species doing what it is designed to do.

When to get help

Contact a reptile-experienced vet the same day for a female that is straining, that has been digging without producing eggs and has become lethargic, or that has abruptly stopped trying after days of nesting behaviour.

Book an appointment for digging alongside weight loss, abnormal droppings, refusal to eat outside the normal seasonal pattern, or damage to the nose and chin.

The goal is a lizard that digs when it wants to, settles when it is done, and basks and eats normally in between.

Bring the species, the sex if known, the age, a full temperature map including the basking surface and the substrate, the humidity, the substrate type and depth, whether a lay box has been offered, the recent weight and feeding record, and the video. With digging cases the enclosure data usually gives the answer, and a female's reproductive history changes the urgency of everything else.
