Lizards: claw care, retained shed on toes, and how digits are lost
Claw care applies to lizards, not to snakes, and overgrown claws are rarely what costs a lizard a toe. Retained shed forming a constricting ring around a digit is. This guide covers post-shed toe checks, safe softening and removal, species-by-species differences from leopard geckos to iguanas, safe trimming technique in a warm animal, and why repeated bad sheds are a husbandry problem rather than a grooming one.

Quick answer
Lizards are the only commonly kept reptiles for which claw care is a real subject. Snakes have no claws at all beyond the vestigial spurs on some boas and pythons, and tortoise and turtle nails are a different job. This guide is about lizards.
The bigger point is that overgrown claws are rarely what costs a lizard a toe. Retained shed is. A ring of old skin left around a digit tightens as the toe grows, cuts off the blood supply, and the toe dies. It happens quietly, it is very common in geckos, and it is entirely preventable.
A soft brush after a warm soak is the correct tool for loosening stuck shed. Fingers and tweezers are not.
- Check toes at every shed. A whitish constricting band around a digit is an emergency in slow motion.
- Never pull retained shed off a toe. Soak, soften and let it release.
- Never restrain a lizard by its tail. Many species drop the tail, and some never grow it back properly.
- A cold reptile clots poorly, so trim claws on a warm animal, not one just out of a cool room.
- If claws are overgrowing, the enclosure has no abrasive surfaces, and fixing that is better than trimming.

A toe that is swollen, discoloured, dry or shrivelled beyond a constricting ring of old skin is losing its blood supply.
Once the tissue has died, the digit will be lost, and the dead tissue is a route for infection into the foot. Do not soak it repeatedly at home hoping it will resolve, and do not pull. This needs a vet who sees reptiles, the same day if the toe is already dark.

Why captive lizards need claw help at all
In the wild, claws are worn down constantly. A bearded dragon digs. An iguana climbs bark. A skink pushes through leaf litter and soil. Every one of those surfaces is abrasive, and the wear roughly matches the growth.
A glass enclosure lined with paper towel, smooth tile or reptile carpet provides none of that. Growth continues and wear does not, and within months the claws are longer than the animal's gait was designed for.
Long claws create three problems. They catch, most dangerously in the loops of reptile carpet, in mesh, and in fabric hammocks and hides, and a lizard that panics and pulls can tear a claw out with the bone attached. They change the stance, so the toe is loaded at the wrong angle and the pads take pressure they were not built for. And they make handling worse for the keeper, which reduces how often the animal is handled and checked.
The right first response is not clippers. It is to give the animal something to wear them down on: slate or textured stone under the basking spot, cork bark, natural rough branches sized for the species, and for diggers a substrate deep enough to dig in. Many lizards stop needing trims entirely once the enclosure gives them work to do.
Retained shed, the problem that actually takes toes
Lizards shed in patches rather than in one piece. Most of the body sheds easily because the animal rubs against surfaces. The extremities do not, because there is very little to rub a toe against.
Old skin left around a digit forms a ring. It dries, contracts, and does not grow with the toe. Circulation past the ring is progressively cut off, the tissue beyond it dies, and the toe is lost. In leopard geckos this is one of the most frequent causes of missing digits, and most affected animals have had several previous sheds where a little was left behind each time and it accumulated.
What to look for. After every shed, look at each foot under a bright light. Compare toes to each other. You are looking for a toe that is fatter than its neighbours, a whitish or greyish band right around a digit, a toe that looks dull where others look glossy, or a tip that is discoloured.
What to do. Give the animal a shallow warm soak in plain water, deep enough to cover the feet but never deep enough to threaten the head, in a container it can climb out of or that you supervise continuously. Put it in a humid hide with damp moss afterwards. Then, with the skin softened, roll the ring gently off with a damp cotton bud or work at it with a soft brush.
What not to do. Do not pull with fingers or tweezers. The old skin is often more firmly attached than the living skin under it, and pulling degloves the toe. Do not use oil on the digits routinely, because oil traps debris and does not solve the underlying humidity problem. Do not wrap the toe.
When to stop and call. If the band does not release after one or two gentle sessions, if the toe is swollen, or if any part of it is dark, cold, dry or shrivelled, stop and get it seen. A vet can remove the constriction under magnification and assess whether the toe is viable, and if it is not, remove it cleanly rather than letting it necrose and become infected.
Why it happened. Retained shed is a husbandry symptom, not bad luck. Look at ambient humidity, whether a humid hide with damp substrate exists and is being used, whether the animal is drinking and hydrated, whether there is a proper temperature gradient, and whether the UVB provision is appropriate and the bulb is still within its useful life. A single bad shed happens. A pattern of them means something in the enclosure is wrong.

A shallow warm soak, a soft brush, a towel and good light. That is the whole kit for toes, and it is more useful than clippers.
What differs by species
Bearded dragons. Claws grow steadily and most captive dragons on smooth surfaces need occasional trimming. They tolerate handling well, which makes it manageable. Give them slate under the basking area and a dig box, and the interval lengthens considerably.
Leopard geckos. Tiny claws that rarely need cutting. Toes are the problem, every shed, for life. A humid hide is not optional for this species.
Crested geckos and other pad-climbing geckos. They climb with adhesive lamellae rather than claws, and the claws are small and functional. They also drop their tails readily and, unlike leopard geckos, do not regenerate them in a normal form. Handle with the whole body supported and never near the tail.
Chameleons. The toes are fused into opposed bundles built for gripping branches, and the claws are part of that grip. Trimming compromises their ability to hold on, which matters enormously for an arboreal animal. Do not trim unless a reptile vet advises it.
Iguanas. Large, sharp, fast-growing claws that genuinely need routine attention, both for the animal's foot health and for the safety of anyone handling it. Adult iguanas are strong and can injure a handler, so this is often a two-person job.
Monitors and other large lizards. Powerful claws that mostly wear on appropriate substrate. Trimming a large monitor is a job for a vet, frequently under sedation, and attempting it at home risks injury to both parties.
Skinks. Wear their claws well if given a substrate deep enough to dig in. If a blue-tongue's claws are overgrowing, the substrate is the thing to change.
Trimming safely, when it is genuinely needed
Warm the animal first. A reptile at the cool end of its range has slower circulation and slower clotting. Let it bask, or do it after its normal warm period, not first thing on a cold morning.
Do not trim during a shed cycle. The skin is loose, the animal is irritable, and you cannot see the digit properly.
Support the whole body. Sit the lizard on a towel on a lap or a table, with a hand supporting the chest and body. Never hold or restrain by the tail. Many species will autotomise, and a dropped tail is a serious event that costs the animal its fat store as well as the tail.
Cover the eyes if it helps. A light cloth over the head calms many lizards and reduces struggling.
Use small clippers. Cat nail scissors, small-animal clippers or clean human nail clippers all cut cleanly. Do not use a rotary grinding tool: the heat, vibration and noise are poorly tolerated and the digits are small.
Take the tip only. Hold the claw against a bright light. In pale claws you can see where the darker core ends. Cut clearly beyond it. In dark claws, take a very small amount and stop.
Do one or two claws and stop if the animal has had enough. There is no requirement to finish in one session and a lizard that comes to dread handling is a lizard that gets checked less often.
Have styptic powder or plain cornflour ready. If a claw bleeds, press the powder onto the tip and hold steady pressure. Keep the animal warm afterwards, because clotting is temperature dependent, and keep it on clean paper towel rather than loose substrate for a few hours.

The same shed check applies to the whole animal. Toes, tail tip and the skin over the eyes are where old skin is left behind.
Where the usual advice goes wrong
"Soak it and pull the stuck shed off."
Soaking is right. Pulling is how toes get degloved. Softened old skin should be rolled or brushed off with almost no force, and if force is needed, it is not ready.
"Use tweezers to get the last bit."
Tweezers concentrate force onto a structure the width of a matchstick with living tissue inside it. Use a damp cotton bud or a soft brush.
"Reptile carpet is safer than loose substrate."
Loop-pile reptile carpet is one of the most common causes of torn claws and trapped toes, and it harbours bacteria in the fibres. Textured tile, slate, or an appropriate loose substrate for the species is generally better.
"Trim them right back so it lasts longer."
Cutting into the quick is painful, bleeds, and risks infection into the bone of the toe. Take the tip, more often.
"Put a bandage on the constricted toe."
A bandage on a digit that is already being constricted adds a second constriction. Leave it open and get it seen.
"It will fall off on its own."
The retained skin will. So, frequently, will the toe.
"Oil the toes to help the shed come off."
Oil is a work-around for a humidity problem and it traps substrate against the skin. Fix the humid hide and the hydration instead.
The routine that catches problems early
Check every foot after every shed, under a bright light, comparing toes to each other. This is the single highest-value habit in lizard keeping and it takes under a minute.
Look at the tail tip and the skin over the eyes at the same time.
Photograph the feet monthly. Digits change shape slowly and photographs settle arguments about whether one toe has always looked like that.
Record shed dates. A lengthening interval, or a run of incomplete sheds, is telling you about the enclosure.
Check the enclosure for hazards quarterly: frayed carpet, exposed mesh at lizard height, fabric hammocks with loose threads, and gaps a claw can hook into.
Track humidity and temperature with instruments rather than by feel, and note when the UVB bulb was installed, because output falls long before the light stops working.
What never to do
Do not pull retained shed off a toe.
Do not restrain a lizard by its tail.
Do not trim during a shed.
Do not trim a cold animal.
Do not use a rotary grinder on a lizard's claws.
Do not bandage or tie anything around a digit.
Do not use human antiseptic creams, disinfectants or essential oils on a reptile's foot.
Do not trim a chameleon's claws unless a reptile vet has told you to.
Do not treat a repeated bad shed as a grooming problem. It is a husbandry problem and it will keep happening until the enclosure changes.

When to get help
See a reptile vet the same day for a toe that is swollen, dark, cold, dry or shrivelled, for a claw torn out at the base, for bleeding that does not stop with a few minutes of pressure, and for any lizard that is not using a limb.
Book promptly for repeated incomplete sheds, for claws that keep overgrowing despite abrasive surfaces, for a lizard that has become reluctant to climb, and for any lizard with splayed limbs, a rubbery jaw or tremors, which point toward metabolic bone disease.
Book a routine appointment before attempting to trim a large iguana or monitor for the first time, and ask to be shown how.

A short handling session that ends calmly is what makes the next toe check possible.
Bring photographs of the affected toe from two angles, the species and age, the exact enclosure setup including substrate and furnishings, measured ambient and hot-end temperatures and humidity, the UVB bulb type and how long it has been installed, the shed history over the last few cycles, the diet and what supplements are dusted on and how often, and whether the animal has had any previous digit loss. If several toes have been lost over time, expect the vet to want to look at the whole husbandry picture rather than only the toe in front of them.
