Lizard Appetite Loss Compared Across Species

"My lizard has gone off its food" means completely different things depending on which lizard you have. The first check is the same for all of them, and it is not the food. It is temperature. A lizard that cannot reach its digestion temperature will not eat, because it cannot process a meal, and this explains more refusals than every dietary factor combined.
Before changing anything about the food, measure the basking surface temperature. It is the answer far more often than the menu is.

The order to check things in
Work down this list. Most owners start at prey type, which is where the answer least often is.
1. Basking surface temperature.
Measure the surface the animal actually lies on with an infrared thermometer, and the cool end too. Do not trust a stick-on dial or a reading taken from the air.
Confirm the thermostat is working and the probe has not moved. Confirm the room has not cooled seasonally. A bulb that has aged, a thermostat probe that slipped behind a rock, or a winter draught all produce this.
2. UVB.
For diurnal species, check the lamp type, its distance, whether anything blocks it, and when it was last replaced. UVB output falls long before the lamp stops emitting visible light, and appetite loss with lethargy is one of the ways metabolic bone disease presents.
3. Shedding.
Dull skin, faded colour, a whitish cast. Most lizards eat little in this window and resume afterwards.
4. Season and photoperiod.
Shorter days and falling temperature reduce appetite in many species. In bearded dragons this may progress into brumation.
5. Recent change.
A new home, a new enclosure, a rearrangement, a substrate change, a new pet, building work, a house move. Any of these produce a refusal lasting days to weeks that resolves if you stop adding to it.
6. Security and enclosure design.
A lizard with no hide, no cover, or an enclosure in a high-traffic room with vibration through the floor will be too alert to feed comfortably.
7. Sexual maturity and reproduction.
Adolescents change appetite. Gravid females typically stop eating before laying and need a lay site. Males may go off food during breeding condition.
8. The food itself.
Only now. Composition wrong for the life stage, item size wrong, presentation wrong, feeder insects the animal has become bored of or fixated on, food offered at the wrong time of day for the species.
9. Health.
If everything above is right and weight is falling, it is medical.

How it differs by species
Bearded dragon.
The classic case, and the one most often misread.
Juveniles are heavily insectivorous and eat frequently because they are growing fast. Adults become substantially herbivorous, and an adult that starts refusing insects while still eating greens is usually just maturing on schedule. That is a diet adjustment, not a problem.
Seasonal slowdown is common as light and temperature fall, and can progress to brumation, where the animal buries itself, becomes inactive and eats nothing for an extended period. A brumating dragon that holds its weight and is otherwise healthy is fine, but brumation should only be allowed in an animal in good condition, and it is worth a veterinary check and a faecal screen beforehand.
Adolescence brings appetite swings and behaviour changes.
Impaction from loose fine substrate is a real risk, particularly in juveniles, and presents as refusal with straining and sometimes hind limb weakness.
Metabolic bone disease from inadequate UVB or calcium presents with appetite loss, trembling, a soft jaw and reluctance to move.
Leopard gecko.
Nocturnal and insectivorous, so refusals are assessed differently.
Pre-shed refusal is very common and obvious, because the animal goes distinctly pale and dull.
A cool enclosure is the commonest fixable cause. Leopard geckos take heat from below and a failed or under-temperature heat mat, or a thermostat probe that has shifted, stops digestion.
They come from arid ground with humid burrows, so an enclosure with no humid hide produces poor sheds and a generally off animal.
Fixation on one feeder is common, particularly on waxworms, which are rich and habit-forming.
The tail is the fat store, so a tail that is thinning is a genuine warning even if the animal appears to be eating. Progressive weight loss with a thinning tail should be investigated for cryptosporidiosis, which is contagious to other geckos and needs proper diagnosis rather than guesswork.
Seasonal slowdown occurs, and adult males may go off food in breeding condition.
Crested gecko and other Rhacodactylus species.
Refusals here are usually temperature in the opposite direction: these are cool-temperate rainforest animals and an enclosure that is too warm is a common cause of appetite loss and of general decline. Overheating is a bigger risk than being too cool.
Humidity matters. A dry enclosure with no proper wet-to-dry cycle produces retained shed and a generally off animal.
Many are fed a prepared complete diet, and a batch change, a flavour change or diet that has been left out too long and started to spoil will be refused. Fresh food, mixed correctly, replaced regularly.
They are nocturnal, so food offered in the morning and cleared at night may simply never have been available when the animal was awake.
They also drink from droplets rather than a dish, and a dehydrated crested gecko eats poorly.
Chameleons.
The most sensitive of the common pet lizards and the least tolerant of error.
Stress is a major driver: visible movement outside the enclosure, another chameleon in sight, an exposed position, or handling. A chameleon that can see a person or a mirror image will not settle.
Hydration is central. They drink moving droplets and often will not use a dish, so a dripper or a proper misting regime is required, and dehydration suppresses appetite quickly.
Gravid females stop eating and need a lay bin, and egg binding in chameleons is a serious and common emergency.
Mouth infection, respiratory infection and parasite burdens all present as appetite loss, and chameleons decline faster than the more robust species. A chameleon off food warrants a vet sooner than a bearded dragon would.
Herbivorous species such as green iguanas and uromastyx.
Diet composition and temperature dominate. These animals need high basking temperatures to digest plant material, and an under-temperature basking site stops them eating.
Food variety, freshness and presentation matter, and iguanas in particular become fixated on favoured items and refuse an otherwise correct salad.

A lizard that uses its basking site normally, holds its weight and sheds cleanly is healthy, whether or not it ate this week.
What a healthy off-food lizard still does
A lizard fasting for a normal reason continues to look like a healthy lizard.
It holds its weight, or loses only very slowly.
It uses the warm end and the cool end, moving between them.
Its eyes are full and round, not sunken.
It sheds completely, with nothing retained on toes, tail tip or over the eyes.
Its urates are soft and pasty rather than hard and chalky.
Its jaw is firm and correctly shaped, its limbs are straight, and it lifts its body clear of the ground when it walks.
It responds normally to approach.
A lizard doing all of these is fine. One that is not has a problem regardless of what it is eating.
What never to do
Do not escalate to richer foods to tempt a refusing lizard.
Do not raise the temperature above the species range to stimulate appetite. Overheating is its own emergency.
Do not force-feed. It is a veterinary procedure.
Do not change five things in one week.
Do not assume a refusing lizard is simply fussy without measuring the basking surface temperature.
Do not let a juvenile refuse for long. Growing animals have little reserve, and the tolerance that applies to an adult does not apply.
Do not feed loose fine substrate species by lunging on the ground if impaction is a risk. Feed in a separate container or change the substrate.
Do not judge a sick lizard by gum colour or capillary refill. Reptiles have neither.
Do not treat, deworm or medicate on a guess. Cryptosporidiosis in particular needs a diagnosis, not a trial.

When to get help
See a reptile-experienced veterinarian the same day for gaping, wheezing, mucus or bubbles at the nose, for straining with a distended abdomen and nothing passed, or for an animal that cannot lift its body off the ground.
Go urgently for trembling, a soft or swollen jaw, bowed limbs or a kinked spine, which are metabolic bone disease and a lighting or supplementation failure.
Book within the week for a downward weight trend, a juvenile refusing repeatedly, a leopard gecko with a thinning tail, retained sheds alongside refusal, or a gravid female that has been straining or restless.
For a weight-stable adult with a plausible normal explanation, no appointment is needed. Keep the log, keep offering, and reassess if the weight moves.
