Hedgehog eyes sit prominently on the side of the head with very little bony protection around them. That shape is why eye injuries are one of the most common reasons a pet hedgehog sees a vet.
Wetness or crusting around an eye is not a staining problem to be wiped away. It is a symptom, and the useful skill is telling the causes apart.

Why hedgehog eyes are vulnerable
Most mammals kept as pets have eyes recessed into a bony socket. A hedgehog's eye sits forward, on a rounded head, positioned for a wide field of view rather than for protection.
The animal also spends its time with its face down, pushing through substrate, foraging under objects and squeezing into gaps. The cornea is the leading surface for much of that.
Add fine dust and the mechanism is obvious. Particles land on an exposed cornea, the hedgehog rubs its face, and a scratch becomes an ulcer.
Their eyesight is poor to begin with. A hedgehog navigating by nose and ear will not obviously change behaviour when one eye is painful, which is why owners so often find these problems late.

Wiping is not on that list for a reason. Cleaning away discharge changes the appearance without touching the cause, and it delays the appointment.
What healthy eyes look like
Both eyes should be equally open, evenly sized, and equally prominent. Asymmetry is the most useful single observation.
The surface should be glossy and clear, so that the light in the room reflects as a sharp point rather than a diffuse glow.
The skin and short fur around the eye should be dry. Damp fur under one eye is a tear overflow, and it means the eye is producing more tears than normal.
Blinking should be normal and equal. A hedgehog that blinks one eye more, or holds it half closed, is protecting it.
Set the baseline while the hedgehog is healthy. A photograph of both eyes in good light gives you something to compare against when you are worried later.
Reducing the causes you control
Substrate.
Fine dusty bedding, sawdust and small wood shavings are the most common avoidable cause of eye irritation. Fleece liners, paper-based bedding and dust-extracted options reduce the exposure.
Ventilation and cleaning.
Ammonia builds up in soiled corners and irritates eyes and airways together. Spot clean daily and change bedding on a regular schedule.
Enclosure hardware.
Check for sharp edges, protruding wire, mesh and gaps a head can push into. Injuries often come from furniture rather than accidents.
Hay and rough plant material.
Stiff stems poke exposed eyes. If you use hay, use it as a stuffing inside a hide rather than as loose bedding.
Wheel and hide surfaces.
Rough plastic seams and split edges scratch. Replace worn items.
The routine that catches problems early
What never to do
Never use human eye drops, contact lens solution, or leftover medication prescribed for another animal. Some contain steroids, which make a corneal ulcer dramatically worse.
Never try to push a protruding eye back into place.
Never hold a hedgehog by the head or apply pressure around the face while examining it.
Never keep wiping a discharging eye instead of getting it seen. Repeated wiping abrades an already damaged surface.
Never assume a hedgehog with one eye closed is simply sleepy. In a nocturnal animal awake at night, a closed eye is a pain sign.
