Hamster parasites: what they actually get, and what they do not need
Hamsters do not need a monthly parasite calendar, and dog and cat products poison them. What they do get is a short list: Demodex, which appears when the animal is ill with something else, mange mites, the environment-dwelling tropical rat mite that bites owners at night, and a dwarf tapeworm that passes directly to children. This guide covers what each looks like, why a diagnosis must come before treatment, and the weekly checks that replace a dosing schedule.

Quick answer
Hamsters do not need a monthly parasite calendar. The routine flea, tick and worm schedule that suits a dog or a cat is built around outdoor exposure and hunting, and a hamster in a cage indoors has neither. Dosing a hamster on a schedule with products designed for larger animals is one of the more common ways owners poison their own pet.
What hamsters do get is a short, specific list, and almost all of it is diagnosed rather than prevented. The two that matter most are Demodex mites, which usually appear because the hamster is ill with something else, and a small tapeworm that passes to people, particularly to children.
The real hamster parasite programme is a weekly look at the coat and skin, not a calendar of doses.

Do not use dog or cat parasite products on a hamster.
Permethrin, found in many dog flea treatments and household sprays, is highly toxic to small rodents. Even products that are used in hamsters by vets, such as certain avermectins, are given at doses calculated on an accurate weight, and the margin for error in an animal weighing tens of grams is very small. A single drop from a pipette designed for a cat can be a large overdose. Signs of poisoning include tremors, twitching, incoordination, seizures and death. Never apply anything topical to a hamster that has not been prescribed for that hamster.

Why the standard prevention calendar does not apply
Preventive parasite schedules exist because dogs and cats are repeatedly re-exposed. They walk through grass where ticks wait, they eat prey animals carrying tapeworm larvae, they meet other animals with fleas, and they pick up worm eggs from contaminated ground. Monthly dosing interrupts a cycle that would otherwise restart continuously.
A hamster in a cage indoors is not in that cycle. It does not hunt, it does not walk outdoors, and unless there is a flea infestation in the household or another infested rodent in the home, it has no route of exposure.
More importantly, the parasites that do affect hamsters are not prevented by these products anyway. Demodex is not an infestation you catch; the mites are already there, and disease reflects the hamster's immune status. Pinworms are usually harmless. Dwarf tapeworm needs a specific treatment and a hygiene programme, not a routine dose.
So the useful programme is not a calendar of medication. It is a calendar of looking, plus strict quarantine for new animals and attention to where bedding and hay come from.
The parasites hamsters actually get
Demodex.
Two species live in hamster hair follicles and skin glands. In a healthy hamster they cause nothing. Disease appears when immunity falls, and the picture is dry, scaly, thickened skin with hair loss, typically starting over the back and rump and spreading, often with surprisingly little itching.
The clinical insight is that Demodex disease in a hamster is a symptom. Look for the reason. Common underlying causes are simply being old, an internal tumour such as lymphoma, kidney disease, a hormonal disease producing thin skin and hair loss, poor diet, chronic stress from overcrowding or an inadequate enclosure, or another chronic illness. Treating the mites without finding the reason produces a temporary improvement and a relapse.
Diagnosis is by deep skin scrape, which needs to reach follicle depth, and sometimes hair plucks. It is not something you can confirm by eye.
Mange mites.
Notoedres and related mites burrow and cause intense irritation. The signs are crusty, thickened skin at the edges of the ears, on the nose, on the feet and around the genitals, with hard scratching and often self-inflicted wounds. These are contagious between hamsters, and they can cause a temporary itchy rash on people handling an affected animal.
Tropical rat mite.
This one behaves differently and is regularly missed. It lives in the environment, in cracks in the cage, in bedding and in the surrounding room, and feeds on the animal at night before retreating. Because it is not on the hamster during the day, skin scrapes come back negative and the hamster may look almost normal. The clue is often the owner: itchy bite marks on arms, waist and ankles, worse at night, in a household with rodents. Treating this means treating the environment as thoroughly as the animal.
Fleas.
Uncommon in hamsters, but possible where there is a household flea infestation from a dog or cat. The treatment is the household, and any product used on the hamster itself must be prescribed.
Lice.
Uncommon, host-specific, visible with magnification as slow-moving specks attached near the skin.
Pinworms.
Common in rodents and usually silent. Occasionally associated with irritation around the anus, poor coat or, in heavy infestations in a young or debilitated animal, weight loss. Diagnosed by examining faeces or with tape applied to the perianal skin.
Dwarf tapeworm.
Rodentolepis nana is the one that matters for the household. Its eggs are infective as soon as they are passed, so it does not need an intermediate host and it can pass directly from hamster to hamster, and from hamster to person. Children are the usual human cases because of hand-to-mouth contact. Most infected hamsters show nothing; heavy infestations cause weight loss and poor condition, and rarely intestinal obstruction. It is treated with a specific prescription drug alongside thorough environmental cleaning.
Protozoa.
Giardia and related organisms are frequently present without causing signs, and are diagnosed on faecal examination. They become relevant in a hamster with persistent soft stools.
Ringworm.
Not a parasite but the main differential for the skin picture, and it passes to people. It needs fungal culture or specific testing rather than a guess.

Part the coat down to the skin over the back, rump and shoulders. You are checking for scale, thinning, crust and redness rather than for the parasite itself.
What changes by species, age and setup
Age is the biggest factor. Demodex disease is overwhelmingly a problem of older hamsters, and hamsters age quickly. A skin problem in a hamster in the second half of its life should prompt a search for an internal cause.
Syrian and dwarf species differ in housing. Dwarf species are often housed in groups, which raises the transmission risk for contagious mites and for tapeworm, and raises the stress load if the enclosure is too small. Syrians must be housed alone after maturity, and a Syrian kept with another Syrian is under chronic stress even if you never see a fight.
Overcrowding and small enclosures contribute directly. Chronic stress suppresses immunity, and immune suppression is exactly what turns commensal Demodex into disease.
Diet matters. A hamster eating a seed mix and selecting only the fatty bits is undernourished in ways that show in the skin and the immune system.
Bedding source matters. Mites and their eggs arrive in hay, straw and bedding, particularly from agricultural sources rather than pet-grade suppliers. Some keepers freeze hay and bedding before use to kill mites, which is a reasonable precaution.
A household with rodent problems changes the picture completely. Wild rats and mice carry the tropical rat mite and the dwarf tapeworm into homes.
What to do instead of a dosing calendar
Weekly skin and coat check.
Part the fur down to the skin over the back, rump, shoulders, belly and around the ears and genitals. You are looking for scale, redness, crusting, thinning and lumps. Do it in good light and, if your eyes need it, with a magnifier.
Weekly weight.
A gram scale is the earliest warning of nearly every hamster illness including the internal diseases that let Demodex take hold.
Quarantine every new hamster.
Keep a new animal in a separate room, with separate equipment and hands washed between, for a proper quarantine period before it goes anywhere near an existing hamster. Ask your vet how long they recommend.
Buy bedding and hay from pet-grade suppliers, store it sealed and dry, and consider freezing before use.
Do not collect wild plant material, hay or moss for bedding or enrichment.
Control household rodents, and take an owner's unexplained night-time bites seriously as a sign.
Wash hands before and after handling, and do not eat while handling or cleaning. Supervise children and make handwashing non-negotiable.
Clean the enclosure properly, with full bedding changes and the substrate replaced rather than topped up, and wash out cracks and corners where mites hide.
Have a senior health check. Once a hamster is past the midpoint of its expected life, a check-up gives you a chance to find the internal disease before the skin announces it.

A gram scale and a written record replace the dosing calendar. Weight is the most sensitive early signal a hamster gives.
What never to do
Do not apply flea spot-ons, sprays, powders, collars or shampoos intended for dogs, cats, rabbits or birds.
Do not use household insecticide sprays or foggers in a room containing a hamster.
Do not bathe a hamster in water. Hamsters chill badly, and wet fur disrupts the skin barrier. Sand baths are the correct method.
Do not treat a skin problem with an over-the-counter mite product before it has been diagnosed.
Do not use tea tree oil, essential oils or vinegar solutions on the skin. Essential oils are toxic to small rodents.
Do not assume a diagnosis of mites is the whole answer in an older hamster.
Do not introduce a new hamster without quarantine, even one from a reputable source.
Do not handle a hamster with suspected tapeworm or ringworm without gloves and thorough handwashing, and keep children away until a vet has advised.
Do not medicate by estimating a dose from a larger animal. Weight-based dosing at this size requires accuracy.

When to get help
Book within days for hair loss, scaly or crusty skin, persistent scratching, visible movement in the coat, rice-grain segments near the tail, soft stools that persist, or weight loss.
Go the same day for tremors, twitching, wobbling or collapse after any topical product has been applied, and take the packaging with you.
Book promptly if anyone in the household develops itchy bites or a rash that coincides with owning the hamster, and mention it to your own doctor as well.

A dense even coat, clear skin, a steady weight and normal droppings are what the weekly check is protecting.
Bring the weight record, dated photographs of the skin, a sealed sample of the bedding, the hamster's age, the enclosure setup and whether it lives alone or in a group, the diet, whether any new animal has arrived recently, and whether anyone in the house is itching. Expect the vet to want a deep skin scrape, possibly a fungal test, and a faecal examination, and in an older hamster to want to investigate why the skin has become vulnerable in the first place.
