Hamster enclosure size and how to build a safe bin cage
Most cages sold for hamsters are too small, and floor space is what a hamster values most. A large clear storage bin is the cheapest way to give it. Why floor space beats everything
A hamster in the wild ranges over a large area every night, foraging and patrolling at ground level. That drive to move does not shrink to fit a small cage.
Confined to too little space, a hamster redirects the urge into repetitive behaviours: monotonous chewing at the bars, pacing the same short line, or climbing the cage roof and flipping backwards off it. These are signs of a hamster with nowhere to go, and the most reliable fix is simply a bigger floor.
The key measure is continuous floor space, one large uninterrupted area the hamster can cross and dig in. Tall multi-level cages that add up their tubes and platforms to sound spacious do not give the same benefit, because a hamster cannot run across a stack of shelves the way it can across an open floor.
A widely used minimum among hamster keepers is around 100 by 50 cm of unbroken floor, and more is better. Many popular pet-store cages fall well short of this, which is why an upgrade makes such a visible difference to behaviour.
Why a bin cage works so well
A large clear plastic storage box, the kind sold for under-bed storage, solves the space problem cheaply.
It gives a big continuous floor, it has solid high sides that hold in a deep layer of bedding without it spilling, and clear plastic lets you watch your hamster without opening anything. It is light, washable and easy to replace.

The trade-off is that a sealed plastic box needs proper ventilation added, and the lid needs to be made escape-proof. Both are simple, and the next section covers them.
Building a safe bin cage
Turning a storage bin into a good enclosure is mostly about airflow, security and the right internal setup.
Ventilation.
Cut one or two large windows in the sides or lid and cover each opening with metal mesh, fixed firmly from the inside so there are no sharp edges. Do not use plastic mesh: a hamster will chew straight through it and escape. Good cross-flow keeps humidity and ammonia from building up.
A secure lid.
The lid must clip, latch or be weighted so a hamster cannot lift or nose it open. Check the whole rim for gaps. A hamster only needs one small opening.
Height for bedding and a wheel.
Choose a bin deep enough to hold a generous layer of bedding for burrowing and still leave room for a full-sized wheel to turn without hitting the roof. Deep bedding is one of the most important things you can provide, and it is covered in detail in its own guide.
A solid floor.
The base of a bin cage is solid plastic, which is exactly right. Never house a hamster on a wire or mesh floor of any kind.

Keep the enclosure out of direct sun and check ventilation, so the inside stays dry and fresh.
What goes inside
Once the box itself is safe, fill it with the things a hamster actually uses.
A deep layer of safe bedding for burrowing, a large solid-surface wheel, one or more hides, safe wood to gnaw, plain paper to shred for nesting, and a small dish of unscented sand all belong in there. Scatter the food through the bedding rather than using a bowl, so the whole floor becomes a foraging ground.

With room to run, deep bedding to dig and a proper wheel, a hamster behaves like a hamster.
Keep the enclosure out of direct sun and away from radiators and draughts, so the inside stays at a comfortable, stable room temperature.
What never to do
Do not keep a hamster in a small pet-store cage and assume it is enough because it was sold for hamsters. Many are far below what a hamster needs.
Do not cover ventilation holes with plastic mesh. It will be chewed through.
Do not rely on a loose lid or one held only by its own weight if a hamster can climb to it. Latch it.
Do not use a wire or mesh floor, or leave any wire rungs a foot can slip through.
Do not stack levels and tubes to claim floor space. A hamster needs one big floor it can actually run across.

When to get help
Housing is mostly a setup question rather than a medical one, but see a vet if your hamster has red, sore or swollen feet, which can come from a wire floor or damp, dirty bedding, or if repetitive bar-biting or pacing continues even after you have given it a much larger floor and deeper bedding.
If your hamster escapes, secure the room, close doors, and search low and in warm hidden spots first, then set humane traps baited with food overnight.
Getting the enclosure right from the start prevents most of these problems, so if you are setting up for a new hamster, build the large, secure, solid-floored home before you bring it home rather than upgrading later.
