Where to Put a Hamster Cage: Sun, Heat, Draughts and Cold Torpor
Balconies, windowsills and conservatories swing between extremes faster than a small animal in a sealed enclosure can cope with. This guide explains the greenhouse effect in a tank, how hamsters actually shed heat, how to cool one safely, and how to recognise the cold torpor that convinces owners their hamster has died.

Quick answer
A hamster enclosure belongs indoors, on an interior wall, out of direct sun at every hour of the day. Balconies, windowsills, conservatories and porches all fail for the same reason: they swing between extremes far faster than a small animal in a sealed box can cope with.
The two outcomes to prevent are opposite and equally serious. Heat builds inside a glass or plastic enclosure in a sunbeam with nowhere for the hamster to escape it. Cold pushes a hamster into a hibernation-like torpor in which it looks convincingly dead, and every year owners bury animals that were still alive.
A stable indoor position, out of the sun and away from radiators and draughts, does more for a hamster's health than almost anything you can put inside the enclosure.
- Sunlight moves. A spot in shade at breakfast can be in full sun by mid afternoon.
- A closed tank or bin cage in the sun behaves like a greenhouse, and a hamster cannot leave it.
- A cold, stiff, unresponsive hamster may be in torpor, not dead. Check for breathing over several minutes before you conclude anything.
- Deep bedding is the best insulation a hamster has, in both directions.
- Use a thermometer that records minimum and maximum, placed at the height of the enclosure, not on the far wall.

When the room becomes too cold, hamsters, particularly Syrians, enter a torpor that looks like death. The body is cold, the limbs are rigid, the eyes may be part open, and breaths can be minutes apart and almost invisible. Before you assume the worst, hold the hamster somewhere warm, watch the chest and the whiskers closely for several minutes, and look for the faintest twitch. Warm the animal gradually with body heat and a warm room rather than a hot pad or a radiator, and get veterinary advice, because a hamster coming out of torpor is dehydrated and low on blood sugar and needs support.

Why a sunny window is worse than it looks
Three things happen at once when sunlight falls on an enclosure.
The first is direct radiant heating. Sunlight through glass warms every surface it touches, including plastic, bedding and the hamster itself. A hamster in a burrow avoids this; a hamster in a box cannot.
The second is the greenhouse effect. Glass and clear plastic let short-wave sunlight in and trap the longer-wave heat that surfaces re-radiate. A tank or bin cage with a partial lid becomes considerably warmer inside than the room around it, and the enclosed design that makes it good at holding bedding also makes it bad at losing heat.
The third is the absence of anywhere to go. In the wild a hamster escapes surface heat by going down a burrow into stable, cooler soil. In an enclosure, the only refuge is the bedding, and if the whole enclosure is warm the bedding is warm too.
Sun also moves. This is the detail that catches out careful owners. A position checked in the morning may be shaded then and in full sun three hours later, and seasonal changes in the sun's angle mean a spot that was safe in winter is not safe in June.
Windows work against you at night as well. Glass loses heat rapidly after dark, so a windowsill is often the hottest place in the room by day and the coldest by night. That daily swing is its own stress even when neither extreme is reached.
Balconies, and why there is no safe version
Owners ask about balconies because the idea of fresh air seems kind. Every element of it works against a hamster.
There is no reliable shade for a whole day. Sun angles change hourly and seasonally, and a parasol does not track them.
Temperature swings outdoors are much larger than indoors, in both directions, and they happen fast.
Predators find small caged animals reliably. Cats, corvids, gulls, foxes and rats all investigate, and a predator does not need to get in to kill a hamster. The stress of a face at the mesh is enough to cause a fatal shock reaction in a prey animal this small.
Rain, wind and humidity spoil bedding and make an enclosure damp, which then becomes cold.
Escape and falls are catastrophic rather than inconvenient. A hamster loose on a balcony has a route to the outside world and a drop.
Hamsters are also nocturnal, so the hours of the day when a balcony is pleasant are the hours the hamster is asleep. There is no benefit to weigh against any of this.
The same reasoning rules out conservatories, porches, unheated spare rooms, garages and sheds. All of them have wider temperature swings than a lived-in room, and garages add exhaust fumes and chemicals.

Multiple hides at different points in the enclosure let a hamster choose its own microclimate, which is the closest indoor equivalent to a burrow.
Heat: recognising it and cooling correctly
Hamsters have almost no active cooling. They cannot sweat meaningfully and panting is not an efficient option for them. They shed heat passively through the thin skin of the ears, and behaviourally by lying stretched out on the coolest surface they can find and by burrowing down.
Early signs.
Lying flat and stretched out rather than curled, staying out of the nest, moving to the coolest corner, drinking more, reduced activity, and sleeping in the open.
Established heat stress.
Rapid shallow breathing, wobbliness, dampness around the mouth, weakness, and a hamster that does not respond normally to your presence.
Emergency.
Unresponsive, limp, or convulsing. This is life threatening and needs veterinary help immediately.
Cooling safely.
Move the hamster to a cool room, not a cold one. Sudden extreme cooling causes its own problems in an animal this small. Dampen the ears and the feet with cool, not iced, water. Offer water. Do not immerse the hamster, do not put it in a fridge or freezer, and do not use ice packs against the body.
Then get veterinary advice, because a hamster that has overheated may look recovered while its organs are not.
Preventing it.
Close blinds and curtains on sunny sides during the day. Identify the coolest interior room in the house before summer, not during it. Put a ceramic or stone tile in the enclosure for the hamster to lie on. Freeze a bottle of water and place it outside the enclosure against one wall, so the hamster can choose to be near it or not, rather than putting anything cold and wet inside where it will soak the bedding. Provide a sand bath in a shaded part of the enclosure. Increase bedding depth so the hamster can burrow deeper.
Never leave a fan blowing directly into an enclosure. Air movement across bedding dries it out and chills a small animal unevenly, and a hamster cannot move out of a draught it did not choose.
Cold and torpor
As a room cools, a hamster first responds by nesting more, eating more, and being less active. If it continues to cool, it enters a torpid state in which the body temperature falls, the heart rate and breathing slow dramatically, and the animal becomes unresponsive.
This is not a healthy hibernation. Wild hamsters that hibernate do so having prepared, in an insulated burrow, with a food store, and they wake periodically. A pet hamster in a cold room enters the state unprepared, dehydrated and without reserves, and the risk of not coming out of it is real.
Recognising it.
The hamster is cold to the touch, limp or stiff, unresponsive, and may have partly open eyes. Breathing is extremely slow and shallow, sometimes with long gaps, and it is easy to miss entirely.
What to do.
Warm gradually. Hold the hamster against your body, wrapped in a towel, in a warm room. Do not put it on a radiator, in front of a heater, or on a hot pad. Rewarming too fast is dangerous.
Watch for the first signs of life: a whisker twitch, an ear flick, a change in breathing. Recovery is usually gradual over a period of some time rather than immediate.
Once the hamster responds, offer water and easily eaten food, keep it warm, and contact a vet. Dehydration and low blood sugar both need addressing, and the underlying cold exposure may have caused other damage.
Preventing it.
Keep the enclosure in a room that is heated consistently, not one that is warm when someone is in it and cold overnight. Give a generous bedding depth so the hamster can insulate itself. Keep the enclosure off the floor and away from external doors, single-glazed windows and unheated walls. Have a plan for a power cut or a boiler failure, which usually means moving the enclosure to the most thermally stable interior room and adding bedding.
The rest of the position checklist
Away from the kitchen.
Fumes from overheated non-stick cookware are rapidly fatal to birds and dangerous to small mammals, and aerosol cleaners, air fresheners and scented candles all concentrate in a small enclosure. A hamster's respiratory system is small and unforgiving.
Above floor level, away from draughts.
Floors are colder and draughtier, and floor level is also within reach of dogs, cats and small children.
Away from constant noise and vibration.
Televisions, speakers, washing machines and computer equipment produce vibration and high-frequency sound. Hamsters hear well above the human range, so a device that seems silent to you may be a continuous noise source to them. A hamster that never settles in the day is often responding to something you cannot hear.
Thinking about the light cycle.
Hamsters are active in the dark. A cage under a lamp that is on until midnight, or beside a window facing a streetlight, has its rhythm disrupted. Equally, a bedroom is often a poor choice for the human, because the hamster is loudest at the times you are trying to sleep, and moving a settled enclosure repeatedly is itself stressful.
Somewhere you will actually look at it.
An enclosure in a spare room is checked less often, and small changes in a hamster are caught by frequent, casual observation.

A minimum and maximum thermometer at enclosure height records the overnight low and the afternoon peak, which is what actually matters and what a spot check always misses.
What varies by species
Syrian hamsters are the species most associated with cold torpor, and they are also the largest, which makes them somewhat more heat tolerant than the dwarfs but no less vulnerable in a sealed sunny enclosure.
Roborovski hamsters are tiny, with a large surface area relative to their body, so they lose heat quickly and dehydrate quickly. Extremes reach them faster.
Winter white dwarf hamsters respond to day length, and in genuinely short winter days some individuals lighten in coat colour. This is normal and is a reminder that these species read the light cycle closely.
Chinese hamsters are often kept in slightly cooler conditions in the pet trade, but the same principles apply.
Across all of them, the answer is the same: a stable interior position, a deep bed to burrow into, and a thermometer that tells you what actually happened overnight.
What never to do
Do not keep a hamster on a balcony, in a conservatory, a porch, a shed or a garage.
Do not place an enclosure on a windowsill, however shaded it looks when you check.
Do not put ice, frozen packs or wet items inside the enclosure. Wet bedding chills a hamster and encourages skin and respiratory problems.
Do not aim a fan at the enclosure.
Do not use a heat mat under a plastic base without a thermostat, and never under the whole footprint, since the hamster must be able to move away from it.
Do not assume a cold, stiff hamster is dead. Check properly, over minutes.
Do not warm a torpid hamster rapidly on a radiator or with a hairdryer.
Do not move a settled enclosure repeatedly. Choose the right position once and leave it.

When to get help
Contact a vet immediately for a hamster that is unresponsive, limp, convulsing, breathing rapidly and shallowly in a hot room, or cold and stiff after exposure to cold.
Contact a vet promptly for a hamster that has recovered from either extreme, because both heat stress and torpor cause damage that is not visible from outside.

A hamster in the right position sleeps deeply in its burrow by day and comes out on its own schedule at dusk, without hiding from heat or from cold.
Bring the recorded minimum and maximum temperatures, where the enclosure is and what is around it, the enclosure type and bedding depth, how long the exposure lasted, what you did in response, and the species and age of the hamster.
